Luke 7:24-30

²⁴^(A)When the messengers of John had departed, He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? ²⁵But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. ²⁶But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. ²⁷This is he of whom it is written:

^(B)‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’

²⁸For I say to you, among those born of women there is ^[a]not a ^(C)greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

²⁹And when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors ^[b]justified God, ^(D)having been baptized with the baptism of John. ³⁰But the Pharisees and ^[c]lawyers rejected ^(E)the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.

²⁴After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? ²⁵If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. ²⁶But what did you go out to see? A prophet?^(A) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. ²⁷This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’^[a]^(B)

²⁸I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God^(C) is greater than he.”

²⁹(All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.^(D) ³⁰But the Pharisees and the experts in the law^(E) rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)
