And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.

And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:

10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:

11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me,(A) and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’[a](B)

The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[b](C)

12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[c](D)

13 When the devil had finished all this tempting,(E) he left him(F) until an opportune time.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

14 Jesus returned to Galilee(G) in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.(H) 15 He was teaching in their synagogues,(I) and everyone praised him.

16 He went to Nazareth,(J) where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,(K) as was his custom. He stood up to read,(L) 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
