Leviticus 24-27

24 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Command the children of Israel, that they bring unto thee pure olive oil beaten for the light, [a]to cause a lamp to burn continually. 3 Without the veil of the testimony, in the tent of meeting, shall Aaron keep it in order from evening to morning before Jehovah continually: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations. 4 He shall keep in order the lamps upon the pure candlestick before Jehovah continually.

5 And thou shalt take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof: two tenth parts of an ephah shall be in one cake. 6 And thou shalt set them in [b]two rows, six on a row, upon the pure table before Jehovah. 7 And thou shalt put pure frankincense upon each [c]row, that it may be to the bread for a memorial, even an offering made by fire unto Jehovah. 8 Every sabbath day he shall set it in order before Jehovah continually; it is [d]on the behalf of the children of Israel, an everlasting covenant. 9 And it shall be for Aaron and his sons; and they shall eat it in a holy place: for it is most holy unto him of the offerings of Jehovah made by fire by a perpetual statute.

10 And the son of an Israelitish woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the children of Israel; and the son of the Israelitish woman and a man of Israel strove together in the camp: 11 and the son of the Israelitish woman blasphemed the Name, and cursed; and they brought him unto Moses. And his mother’s name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan. 12 And they put him in ward, that it might be declared unto them at the mouth of Jehovah.

13 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, 14 Bring forth him that hath cursed without the camp; and let all that heard him lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him. 15 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Whosoever curseth his God shall bear his sin. 16 And he that blasphemeth the name of Jehovah, he shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the sojourner, as the home-born, when he blasphemeth the name of Jehovah, shall be put to death. 17 And he that smiteth any man mortally shall surely be put to death. 18 And he that smiteth a beast mortally shall make it good, life for life. 19 And if a man cause a blemish in his neighbor; as he hath done, so shall it be done to him: 20 breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be rendered unto him. 21 And he that killeth a beast shall make it good: and he that killeth a man shall be put to death. 22 Ye shall have one manner of law, as well for the sojourner, as for the home-born: for I am Jehovah your God. 23 And Moses spake to the children of Israel; and they brought forth him that had cursed out of the camp, and stoned him with stones. And the children of Israel did as Jehovah commanded Moses.

25 And Jehovah spake unto Moses in mount Sinai, saying, 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto Jehovah. 3 Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruits thereof; 4 but in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a sabbath unto Jehovah: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard. 5 That which groweth of itself of thy harvest thou shalt not reap, and the grapes of thy undressed vine thou shalt not gather: it shall be a year of solemn rest for the land. 6 And the sabbath of the land shall be for food for you; for thee, and for thy servant and for thy maid, and for thy hired servant and for thy stranger, who sojourn with thee. 7 And for thy cattle, and for the beasts that are in thy land, shall all the increase thereof be for food.

8 And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and there shall be unto thee the days of seven sabbaths of years, even forty and nine years. 9 Then shalt thou send abroad the loud trumpet on the tenth day of the seventh month; in the day of atonement shall ye send abroad the trumpet throughout all your land. 10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubilee unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family. 11 A jubilee shall that fiftieth year be unto you: ye shall not sow, neither reap that which groweth of itself in it, nor gather the grapes in it of the undressed vines. 12 For it is a jubilee; it shall be holy unto you: ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field.

13 In this year of jubilee ye shall return every man unto his possession. 14 And if thou sell aught unto thy neighbor, or buy of thy neighbor’s hand, ye shall not wrong one another. 15 According to the number of years after the jubilee thou shalt buy of thy neighbor, and according unto the number of years of the crops he shall sell unto thee. 16 According to the multitude of the years thou shalt increase the price thereof, and according to the fewness of the years thou shalt diminish the price of it; for the number of the crops doth he sell unto thee. 17 And ye shall not wrong one another; but thou shalt fear thy God: for I am Jehovah your God.

18 Wherefore ye shall do my statutes, and keep mine ordinances and do them; and ye shall dwell in the land in safety. 19 And the land shall yield its fruit, and ye shall eat your fill, and dwell therein in safety. 20 And if ye shall say, What shall we eat the seventh year? behold, we shall not sow, nor gather in our increase; 21 then I will command my blessing upon you in the sixth year, and it shall bring forth fruit for the three years. 22 And ye shall sow the eighth year, and eat of the fruits, the old store; until the ninth year, until its fruits come in, ye shall eat the old store.

23 And the land shall not be sold in perpetuity; for the land is mine: for ye are strangers and sojourners with me. 24 And in all the land of your possession ye shall grant a redemption for the land. 25 If thy brother be waxed poor, and sell some of his possession, then shall his kinsman that is next unto him come, and shall redeem that which his brother hath sold. 26 And if a man have no one to redeem it, and he be waxed rich and find sufficient to redeem it; 27 then let him reckon the years of the sale thereof, and restore the overplus unto the man to whom he sold it; and he shall return unto his possession. 28 But if he be not able to get it back for himself, then that which he hath sold shall remain in the hand of him that hath bought it until the year of jubilee: and in the jubilee it shall go out, and he shall return unto his possession.

29 And if a man sell a dwelling-house in a walled city, then he may redeem it within a whole year after it is sold; for a full year shall he have the right of redemption. 30 And if it be not redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house that is in the walled city shall be made sure in perpetuity to him that bought it, throughout his generations: it shall not go out in the jubilee. 31 But the houses of the villages which have no wall round about them shall be reckoned with the fields of the country: they may be redeemed, and they shall go out in the jubilee. 32 Nevertheless the cities of the Levites, the houses of the cities of their possession, may the Levites redeem at any time. 33 And [e]if one of the Levites redeem, then the house that was sold, and the city of his possession, shall go out in the jubilee; for the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Israel. 34 But the field of the [f]suburbs of their cities may not be sold; for it is their perpetual possession.

35 And if thy brother be waxed poor, and his hand fail with thee; then thou shalt [g]uphold him: as a stranger and a sojourner shall he live with thee. 36 Take thou no interest of him or increase, but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee. 37 Thou shalt not give him thy money upon interest, nor give him thy victuals for increase. 38 I am Jehovah your God, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God.

39 And if thy brother be waxed poor with thee, and sell himself unto thee; thou shalt not make him to serve as a bondservant. 40 As a hired servant, and as a sojourner, he shall be with thee; he shall serve with thee unto the year of jubilee: 41 then shall he go out from thee, he and his children with him, and shall return unto his own family, and unto the possession of his fathers shall he return. 42 For they are my servants, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as bondmen. 43 Thou shalt not rule over him with rigor, but shalt fear thy God. 44 And as for thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, whom thou shalt have; of the nations that are round about you, of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids. 45 Moreover of the children of the strangers that sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they have begotten in your land: and they shall be your possession. 46 And ye shall make them an inheritance for your children after you, to hold for a possession; of them shall ye take your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel ye shall not rule, one over another, with rigor.

47 And if a stranger or sojourner with thee be waxed rich, and thy brother be waxed poor beside him, and sell himself unto the stranger or sojourner with thee, or to the stock of the stranger’s family; 48 after that he is sold he may be redeemed: one of his brethren may redeem him; 49 or his uncle, or his uncle’s son, may redeem him, or any that is nigh of kin unto him of his family may redeem him; or if he be waxed rich, he may redeem himself. 50 And he shall reckon with him that bought him from the year that he sold himself to him unto the year of jubilee: and the price of his sale shall be according unto the number of years; according to the time of a hired servant shall he be with him. 51 If there be yet many years, according unto them he shall give back the price of his redemption out of the money that he was bought for. 52 And if there remain but few years unto the year of jubilee, then he shall reckon with him; according unto his years shall he give back the price of his redemption. 53 As a servant hired year by year shall he be with him: he shall not rule with rigor over him in thy sight. 54 And if he be not redeemed [h]by these means, then he shall go out in the year of jubilee, he, and his children with him. 55 For unto me the children of Israel are servants; they are my servants whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: I am Jehovah your God.

26 Ye shall make you no idols, neither shall ye rear you up a graven image, or [i]a pillar, neither shall ye place any figured stone in your land, to bow down [j]unto it: for I am Jehovah your God. 2 Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am Jehovah.

3 If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; 4 then I will give your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. 5 And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time; and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely. 6 And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will cause evil beasts to cease out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land. 7 And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. 8 And five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall chase ten thousand; and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. 9 And I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and will establish my covenant with you. 10 And ye shall eat old store long kept, and ye shall bring forth the old [k]because of the new. 11 And I will set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you. 12 And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people. 13 I am Jehovah your God, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bars of your yoke, and made you go upright.

14 But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments; 15 and if ye shall reject my statutes, and if your soul abhor mine ordinances, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but break my covenant; 16 I also will do this unto you: I will appoint terror over you, even consumption and fever, that shall consume the eyes, and make the soul to pine away; and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. 17 And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be smitten before your enemies: they that hate you shall rule over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you. 18 And if ye will not yet for these things hearken unto me, then I will chastise you seven times more for your sins. 19 And I will break the pride of your power: and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass; 20 and your strength shall be spent in vain; for your land shall not yield its increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruit.

21 And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me, I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins. 22 And I will send the beast of the field among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your ways shall become desolate.

23 And if by these things ye will not be reformed [l]unto me, but will walk contrary unto me; 24 then will I also walk contrary unto you; and I will smite you, even I, seven times for your sins. 25 And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall execute the vengeance of the covenant; and ye shall be gathered together within your cities: and I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. 26 When I break your staff of bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver your bread again by weight: and ye shall eat, and not be satisfied.

27 And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me; 28 then I will walk contrary unto you in wrath; and I also will chastise you seven times for your sins. 29 And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat. 30 And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your sun-images, and cast your dead bodies upon the bodies of your idols; and my soul shall abhor you. 31 And I will make your cities a waste, and will bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savor of your sweet odors. 32 And I will bring the land into desolation; and your enemies that dwell therein shall be astonished at it. 33 And you will I scatter among the nations, and I will draw out the sword after you: and your land shall be a desolation, and your cities shall be a waste.

34 Then shall the land enjoy its sabbaths, as long as it lieth desolate, and ye are in your enemies’ land; even then shall the land rest, and enjoy its sabbaths. 35 As long as it lieth desolate it shall have rest, even the rest which it had not in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it. 36 And as for them that are left of you, I will send a faintness into their heart in the lands of their enemies: and the sound of a driven leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as one fleeth from the sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth. 37 And they shall stumble one upon another, as it were before the sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies. 38 And ye shall perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up. 39 And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies’ lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them.

40 And they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, in their trespass which they trespassed against me, and also that, because they walked contrary unto me, 41 I also walked contrary unto them, and brought them into the land of their enemies: if then their uncircumcised heart be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity; 42 then will I remember my covenant with Jacob; and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land. 43 The land also shall be left by them, and shall enjoy its sabbaths, while it lieth desolate without them: and they shall accept of the punishment of their iniquity; because, even because they rejected mine ordinances, and their soul abhorred my statutes. 44 And yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my covenant with them; for I am Jehovah their God; 45 but I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God: I am Jehovah.

46 These are the statutes and ordinances and laws, which Jehovah made between him and the children of Israel in mount Sinai by Moses.

27 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When a man shall [m]accomplish a vow, [n]the persons shall be for Jehovah by thy estimation. 3 And thy estimation shall be of the male from twenty years old even unto sixty years old, even thy estimation shall be fifty shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary. 4 And if it be a female, then thy estimation shall be thirty shekels. 5 And if it be from five years old even unto twenty years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male twenty shekels, and for the female ten shekels. 6 And if it be from a month old even unto five years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male five shekels of silver, and for the female thy estimation shall be three shekels of silver. 7 And if it be from sixty years old and upward; if it be a male, then thy estimation shall be fifteen shekels, and for the female ten shekels. 8 But if he be poorer than thy estimation, then he shall be set before the priest, and the priest shall value him; according to the ability of him that vowed shall the priest value him.

9 And if it be a beast, whereof men offer an oblation unto Jehovah, all that any man giveth of such unto Jehovah shall be holy. 10 He shall not alter it, nor change it, a good for a bad, or a bad for a good: and if he shall at all change beast for beast, then both it and that for which it is changed shall be holy. 11 And if it be any unclean beast, of which they do not offer an oblation unto Jehovah, then he shall set the beast before the priest; 12 and the priest shall value it, whether it be good or bad: as thou the priest valuest it, so shall it be. 13 But if he will indeed redeem it, then he shall add the fifth part thereof unto thy estimation.

14 And when a man shall sanctify his house to be holy unto Jehovah, then the priest shall estimate it, whether it be good or bad: as the priest shall estimate it, so shall it stand. 15 And if he that sanctified it will redeem his house, then he shall add the fifth part of the money of thy estimation unto it, and it shall be his.

16 And if a man shall sanctify unto Jehovah part of the field of his possession, then thy estimation shall be according to the sowing thereof: the sowing of a homer of barley shall be valued at fifty shekels of silver. 17 If he sanctify his field from the year of jubilee, according to thy estimation it shall stand. 18 But if he sanctify his field after the jubilee, then the priest shall reckon unto him the money according to the years that remain unto the year of jubilee; and an abatement shall be made from thy estimation. 19 And if he that sanctified the field will indeed redeem it, then he shall add the fifth part of the money of thy estimation unto it, and it shall be assured to him. 20 And if he will not redeem the field, or if he have sold the field to another man, it shall not be redeemed any more: 21 but the field, when it goeth out in the jubilee, shall be holy unto Jehovah, as a field devoted; the possession thereof shall be the priest’s. 22 And if he sanctify unto Jehovah a field which he hath bought, which is not of the field of his possession; 23 then the priest shall reckon unto him the worth of thy estimation unto the year of jubilee: and he shall give thine estimation in that day, as a holy thing unto Jehovah. 24 In the year of jubilee the field shall return unto him of whom it was bought, even to him to whom the possession of the land belongeth. 25 And all thy estimations shall be according to the shekel of the sanctuary: twenty gerahs shall be the shekel.

26 Only the firstling among beasts, which is made a firstling to Jehovah, no man shall sanctify it; whether it be ox or sheep, it is Jehovah’s. 27 And if it be of an unclean beast, then he shall ransom it according to thine estimation, and shall add unto it the fifth part thereof: or if it be not redeemed, then it shall be sold according to thy estimation.

28 Notwithstanding, no devoted thing, that a man shall devote unto Jehovah of all that he hath, whether of man or beast, or of the field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed: every devoted thing is most holy unto Jehovah. 29 No one devoted, that shall be devoted from among men, shall be ransomed; he shall surely be put to death.

30 And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is Jehovah’s: it is holy unto Jehovah. 31 And if a man will redeem aught of his tithe, he shall add unto it the fifth part thereof. 32 And all the tithe of the herd or the flock, whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto Jehovah. 33 He shall not search whether it be good or bad, neither shall he change it: and if he change it at all, then both it and that for which it is changed shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed.

34 These are the commandments, which Jehovah commanded Moses for the children of Israel in mount Sinai.

Olive Oil and Bread Set Before the Lord(A)

24 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Command the Israelites to bring you clear oil of pressed olives for the light so that the lamps may be kept burning continually. 3 Outside the curtain that shields the ark of the covenant law in the tent of meeting, Aaron is to tend the lamps before the Lord from evening till morning, continually. This is to be a lasting ordinance(B) for the generations to come. 4 The lamps on the pure gold lampstand(C) before the Lord must be tended continually.

5 “Take the finest flour and bake twelve loaves of bread,(D) using two-tenths of an ephah[a](E) for each loaf. 6 Arrange them in two stacks, six in each stack, on the table of pure gold(F) before the Lord. 7 By each stack put some pure incense(G) as a memorial[b] portion(H) to represent the bread and to be a food offering presented to the Lord. 8 This bread is to be set out before the Lord regularly,(I) Sabbath after Sabbath,(J) on behalf of the Israelites, as a lasting covenant. 9 It belongs to Aaron and his sons,(K) who are to eat it in the sanctuary area,(L) because it is a most holy(M) part of their perpetual share of the food offerings presented to the Lord.”

A Blasphemer Put to Death

10 Now the son of an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father went out among the Israelites, and a fight broke out in the camp between him and an Israelite. 11 The son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the Name(N) with a curse;(O) so they brought him to Moses.(P) (His mother’s name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri the Danite.)(Q) 12 They put him in custody until the will of the Lord should be made clear to them.(R)

13 Then the Lord said to Moses: 14 “Take the blasphemer outside the camp. All those who heard him are to lay their hands on his head, and the entire assembly is to stone him.(S) 15 Say to the Israelites: ‘Anyone who curses their God(T) will be held responsible;(U) 16 anyone who blasphemes(V) the name of the Lord is to be put to death.(W) The entire assembly must stone them. Whether foreigner or native-born, when they blaspheme the Name they are to be put to death.

17 “‘Anyone who takes the life of a human being is to be put to death.(X) 18 Anyone who takes the life of someone’s animal must make restitution(Y)—life for life. 19 Anyone who injures their neighbor is to be injured in the same manner: 20 fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth.(Z) The one who has inflicted the injury must suffer the same injury. 21 Whoever kills an animal must make restitution,(AA) but whoever kills a human being is to be put to death.(AB) 22 You are to have the same law for the foreigner(AC) and the native-born.(AD) I am the Lord your God.’”

23 Then Moses spoke to the Israelites, and they took the blasphemer outside the camp and stoned him.(AE) The Israelites did as the Lord commanded Moses.

The Sabbath Year

25 The Lord said to Moses at Mount Sinai,(AF) 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a sabbath to the Lord. 3 For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops.(AG) 4 But in the seventh year the land is to have a year of sabbath rest,(AH) a sabbath to the Lord. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards.(AI) 5 Do not reap what grows of itself(AJ) or harvest the grapes(AK) of your untended vines.(AL) The land is to have a year of rest. 6 Whatever the land yields during the sabbath year(AM) will be food for you—for yourself, your male and female servants, and the hired worker and temporary resident who live among you, 7 as well as for your livestock and the wild animals(AN) in your land. Whatever the land produces may be eaten.

The Year of Jubilee(AO)(AP)

8 “‘Count off seven sabbath years—seven times seven years—so that the seven sabbath years amount to a period of forty-nine years. 9 Then have the trumpet(AQ) sounded everywhere on the tenth day of the seventh month;(AR) on the Day of Atonement(AS) sound the trumpet throughout your land. 10 Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty(AT) throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee(AU) for you; each of you is to return to your family property(AV) and to your own clan. 11 The fiftieth year shall be a jubilee(AW) for you; do not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the untended vines.(AX) 12 For it is a jubilee and is to be holy for you; eat only what is taken directly from the fields.

13 “‘In this Year of Jubilee(AY) everyone is to return to their own property.

14 “‘If you sell land to any of your own people or buy land from them, do not take advantage of each other.(AZ) 15 You are to buy from your own people on the basis of the number of years(BA) since the Jubilee. And they are to sell to you on the basis of the number of years left for harvesting crops. 16 When the years are many, you are to increase the price, and when the years are few, you are to decrease the price,(BB) because what is really being sold to you is the number of crops. 17 Do not take advantage of each other,(BC) but fear your God.(BD) I am the Lord your God.(BE)

18 “‘Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws,(BF) and you will live safely in the land.(BG) 19 Then the land will yield its fruit,(BH) and you will eat your fill and live there in safety.(BI) 20 You may ask, “What will we eat in the seventh year(BJ) if we do not plant or harvest our crops?” 21 I will send you such a blessing(BK) in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years.(BL) 22 While you plant during the eighth year, you will eat from the old crop and will continue to eat from it until the harvest of the ninth year comes in.(BM)

23 “‘The land(BN) must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine(BO) and you reside in my land as foreigners(BP) and strangers. 24 Throughout the land that you hold as a possession, you must provide for the redemption(BQ) of the land.

25 “‘If one of your fellow Israelites becomes poor and sells some of their property, their nearest relative(BR) is to come and redeem(BS) what they have sold. 26 If, however, there is no one to redeem it for them but later on they prosper(BT) and acquire sufficient means to redeem it themselves, 27 they are to determine the value for the years(BU) since they sold it and refund the balance to the one to whom they sold it; they can then go back to their own property.(BV) 28 But if they do not acquire the means to repay, what was sold will remain in the possession of the buyer until the Year of Jubilee. It will be returned(BW) in the Jubilee, and they can then go back to their property.(BX)

29 “‘Anyone who sells a house in a walled city retains the right of redemption a full year after its sale. During that time the seller may redeem it. 30 If it is not redeemed before a full year has passed, the house in the walled city shall belong permanently to the buyer and the buyer’s descendants. It is not to be returned in the Jubilee. 31 But houses in villages without walls around them are to be considered as belonging to the open country. They can be redeemed, and they are to be returned in the Jubilee.

32 “‘The Levites always have the right to redeem their houses in the Levitical towns,(BY) which they possess. 33 So the property of the Levites is redeemable—that is, a house sold in any town they hold—and is to be returned in the Jubilee, because the houses in the towns of the Levites are their property among the Israelites. 34 But the pastureland belonging to their towns must not be sold; it is their permanent possession.(BZ)

35 “‘If any of your fellow Israelites become poor(CA) and are unable to support themselves among you, help them(CB) as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you. 36 Do not take interest(CC) or any profit from them, but fear your God,(CD) so that they may continue to live among you. 37 You must not lend them money at interest(CE) or sell them food at a profit. 38 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan(CF) and to be your God.(CG)

39 “‘If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to you, do not make them work as slaves.(CH) 40 They are to be treated as hired workers(CI) or temporary residents among you; they are to work for you until the Year of Jubilee. 41 Then they and their children are to be released, and they will go back to their own clans and to the property(CJ) of their ancestors.(CK) 42 Because the Israelites are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt,(CL) they must not be sold as slaves. 43 Do not rule over them ruthlessly,(CM) but fear your God.(CN)

44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

47 “‘If a foreigner residing among you becomes rich and any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves(CO) to the foreigner or to a member of the foreigner’s clan, 48 they retain the right of redemption(CP) after they have sold themselves. One of their relatives(CQ) may redeem them: 49 An uncle or a cousin or any blood relative in their clan may redeem them. Or if they prosper,(CR) they may redeem themselves. 50 They and their buyer are to count the time from the year they sold themselves up to the Year of Jubilee.(CS) The price for their release is to be based on the rate paid to a hired worker(CT) for that number of years. 51 If many years remain, they must pay for their redemption a larger share of the price paid for them. 52 If only a few years remain until the Year of Jubilee, they are to compute that and pay for their redemption accordingly.(CU) 53 They are to be treated as workers hired from year to year; you must see to it that those to whom they owe service do not rule over them ruthlessly.(CV)

54 “‘Even if someone is not redeemed in any of these ways, they and their children are to be released in the Year of Jubilee, 55 for the Israelites belong to me as servants. They are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt.(CW) I am the Lord your God.(CX)

Reward for Obedience

26 “‘Do not make idols(CY) or set up an image(CZ) or a sacred stone(DA) for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone(DB) in your land to bow down before it. I am the Lord your God.

2 “‘Observe my Sabbaths(DC) and have reverence for my sanctuary.(DD) I am the Lord.

3 “‘If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey(DE) my commands, 4 I will send you rain(DF) in its season,(DG) and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit.(DH) 5 Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want(DI) and live in safety in your land.(DJ)

6 “‘I will grant peace in the land,(DK) and you will lie down(DL) and no one will make you afraid.(DM) I will remove wild beasts(DN) from the land, and the sword will not pass through your country. 7 You will pursue your enemies,(DO) and they will fall by the sword before you. 8 Five(DP) of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you.(DQ)

9 “‘I will look on you with favor and make you fruitful and increase your numbers,(DR) and I will keep my covenant(DS) with you. 10 You will still be eating last year’s harvest when you will have to move it out to make room for the new.(DT) 11 I will put my dwelling place[c](DU) among you, and I will not abhor you.(DV) 12 I will walk(DW) among you and be your God,(DX) and you will be my people.(DY) 13 I am the Lord your God,(DZ) who brought you out of Egypt(EA) so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians; I broke the bars of your yoke(EB) and enabled you to walk with heads held high.

Punishment for Disobedience

14 “‘But if you will not listen to me and carry out all these commands,(EC) 15 and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws(ED) and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant,(EE) 16 then I will do this to you: I will bring on you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever(EF) that will destroy your sight and sap your strength.(EG) You will plant seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it.(EH) 17 I will set my face(EI) against you so that you will be defeated(EJ) by your enemies;(EK) those who hate you will rule over you,(EL) and you will flee even when no one is pursuing you.(EM)

18 “‘If after all this you will not listen to me,(EN) I will punish(EO) you for your sins seven times over.(EP) 19 I will break down your stubborn pride(EQ) and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze.(ER) 20 Your strength will be spent in vain,(ES) because your soil will not yield its crops, nor will the trees of your land yield their fruit.(ET)

21 “‘If you remain hostile(EU) toward me and refuse to listen to me, I will multiply your afflictions seven times over,(EV) as your sins deserve. 22 I will send wild animals(EW) against you, and they will rob you of your children, destroy your cattle and make you so few(EX) in number that your roads will be deserted.(EY)

23 “‘If in spite of these things you do not accept my correction(EZ) but continue to be hostile toward me, 24 I myself will be hostile(FA) toward you and will afflict you for your sins seven times over. 25 And I will bring the sword(FB) on you to avenge(FC) the breaking of the covenant. When you withdraw into your cities, I will send a plague(FD) among you, and you will be given into enemy hands. 26 When I cut off your supply of bread,(FE) ten women will be able to bake your bread in one oven, and they will dole out the bread by weight. You will eat, but you will not be satisfied.

27 “‘If in spite of this you still do not listen to me(FF) but continue to be hostile toward me, 28 then in my anger(FG) I will be hostile(FH) toward you, and I myself will punish you for your sins seven times over.(FI) 29 You will eat(FJ) the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters.(FK) 30 I will destroy your high places,(FL) cut down your incense altars(FM) and pile your dead bodies[d] on the lifeless forms of your idols,(FN) and I will abhor(FO) you. 31 I will turn your cities into ruins(FP) and lay waste(FQ) your sanctuaries,(FR) and I will take no delight in the pleasing aroma of your offerings.(FS) 32 I myself will lay waste the land,(FT) so that your enemies who live there will be appalled.(FU) 33 I will scatter(FV) you among the nations(FW) and will draw out my sword(FX) and pursue you. Your land will be laid waste,(FY) and your cities will lie in ruins.(FZ) 34 Then the land will enjoy its sabbath years all the time that it lies desolate(GA) and you are in the country of your enemies;(GB) then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths. 35 All the time that it lies desolate, the land will have the rest(GC) it did not have during the sabbaths you lived in it.

36 “‘As for those of you who are left, I will make their hearts so fearful in the lands of their enemies that the sound of a windblown leaf(GD) will put them to flight.(GE) They will run as though fleeing from the sword, and they will fall, even though no one is pursuing them.(GF) 37 They will stumble over one another(GG) as though fleeing from the sword, even though no one is pursuing them. So you will not be able to stand before your enemies.(GH) 38 You will perish(GI) among the nations; the land of your enemies will devour you.(GJ) 39 Those of you who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their sins; also because of their ancestors’(GK) sins they will waste away.(GL)

40 “‘But if they will confess(GM) their sins(GN) and the sins of their ancestors(GO)—their unfaithfulness and their hostility toward me, 41 which made me hostile(GP) toward them so that I sent them into the land of their enemies—then when their uncircumcised hearts(GQ) are humbled(GR) and they pay(GS) for their sin, 42 I will remember my covenant with Jacob(GT) and my covenant with Isaac(GU) and my covenant with Abraham,(GV) and I will remember the land. 43 For the land will be deserted(GW) by them and will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them. They will pay for their sins because they rejected(GX) my laws and abhorred my decrees.(GY) 44 Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies,(GZ) I will not reject them or abhor(HA) them so as to destroy them completely,(HB) breaking my covenant(HC) with them. I am the Lord their God. 45 But for their sake I will remember(HD) the covenant with their ancestors whom I brought out of Egypt(HE) in the sight of the nations to be their God. I am the Lord.’”

46 These are the decrees, the laws and the regulations that the Lord established at Mount Sinai(HF) between himself and the Israelites through Moses.(HG)

Redeeming What Is the Lord’s

27 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘If anyone makes a special vow(HH) to dedicate a person to the Lord by giving the equivalent value, 3 set the value of a male between the ages of twenty and sixty at fifty shekels[e] of silver, according to the sanctuary shekel[f];(HI) 4 for a female, set her value at thirty shekels[g]; 5 for a person between the ages of five and twenty, set the value of a male at twenty shekels[h](HJ) and of a female at ten shekels[i]; 6 for a person between one month and five years, set the value of a male at five shekels[j](HK) of silver and that of a female at three shekels[k] of silver; 7 for a person sixty years old or more, set the value of a male at fifteen shekels[l] and of a female at ten shekels. 8 If anyone making the vow is too poor to pay(HL) the specified amount, the person being dedicated is to be presented to the priest, who will set the value(HM) according to what the one making the vow can afford.

9 “‘If what they vowed is an animal that is acceptable as an offering to the Lord,(HN) such an animal given to the Lord becomes holy.(HO) 10 They must not exchange it or substitute a good one for a bad one, or a bad one for a good one;(HP) if they should substitute one animal for another, both it and the substitute become holy. 11 If what they vowed is a ceremonially unclean animal(HQ)—one that is not acceptable as an offering to the Lord—the animal must be presented to the priest, 12 who will judge its quality as good or bad. Whatever value the priest then sets, that is what it will be. 13 If the owner wishes to redeem(HR) the animal, a fifth must be added to its value.(HS)

14 “‘If anyone dedicates their house as something holy to the Lord, the priest will judge its quality as good or bad. Whatever value the priest then sets, so it will remain. 15 If the one who dedicates their house wishes to redeem it,(HT) they must add a fifth to its value, and the house will again become theirs.

16 “‘If anyone dedicates to the Lord part of their family land, its value is to be set according to the amount of seed required for it—fifty shekels of silver to a homer[m] of barley seed. 17 If they dedicate a field during the Year of Jubilee, the value that has been set remains. 18 But if they dedicate a field after the Jubilee,(HU) the priest will determine the value according to the number of years that remain(HV) until the next Year of Jubilee, and its set value will be reduced. 19 If the one who dedicates the field wishes to redeem it,(HW) they must add a fifth to its value, and the field will again become theirs. 20 If, however, they do not redeem the field, or if they have sold it to someone else, it can never be redeemed. 21 When the field is released in the Jubilee,(HX) it will become holy,(HY) like a field devoted to the Lord;(HZ) it will become priestly property.

22 “‘If anyone dedicates to the Lord a field they have bought, which is not part of their family land, 23 the priest will determine its value up to the Year of Jubilee,(IA) and the owner must pay its value on that day as something holy to the Lord. 24 In the Year of Jubilee the field will revert to the person from whom it was bought,(IB) the one whose land it was. 25 Every value is to be set according to the sanctuary shekel,(IC) twenty gerahs(ID) to the shekel.

26 “‘No one, however, may dedicate the firstborn of an animal, since the firstborn already belongs to the Lord;(IE) whether an ox[n] or a sheep, it is the Lord’s. 27 If it is one of the unclean animals,(IF) it may be bought back at its set value, adding a fifth of the value to it. If it is not redeemed, it is to be sold at its set value.

28 “‘But nothing that a person owns and devotes[o](IG) to the Lord—whether a human being or an animal or family land—may be sold or redeemed; everything so devoted is most holy(IH) to the Lord.

29 “‘No person devoted to destruction[p] may be ransomed; they are to be put to death.(II)

30 “‘A tithe(IJ) of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy(IK) to the Lord. 31 Whoever would redeem(IL) any of their tithe must add a fifth of the value(IM) to it. 32 Every tithe of the herd and flock—every tenth animal that passes under the shepherd’s rod(IN)—will be holy to the Lord. 33 No one may pick out the good from the bad or make any substitution.(IO) If anyone does make a substitution, both the animal and its substitute become holy and cannot be redeemed.(IP)’”

34 These are the commands the Lord gave Moses at Mount Sinai(IQ) for the Israelites.(IR)
