The Sun Stands Still
10 Now it came to pass when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem (A)heard how Joshua had taken (B)Ai and had utterly destroyed it—(C)as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he had done to (D)Ai and its king—and (E)how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them, 2 that they (F)feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty. 3 Therefore Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon, saying, 4 “Come up to me and help me, that we may attack Gibeon, for (G)it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.” 5 Therefore the five kings of the (H)Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, (I)gathered together and went up, they and all their armies, and camped before Gibeon and made war against it.
6 And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp (J)at Gilgal, saying, “Do not forsake your servants; come up to us quickly, save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the mountains have gathered together against us.”
7 So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he and (K)all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor. 8 And the Lord said to Joshua, (L)“Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your hand; (M)not a man of them shall (N)stand before you.” 9 Joshua therefore came upon them suddenly, having marched all night from Gilgal. 10 So the Lord (O)routed them before Israel, killed them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, chased them along the road that goes (P)to Beth Horon, and struck them down as far as (Q)Azekah and Makkedah. 11 And it happened, as they fled before Israel and were on the descent of Beth Horon, (R)that the Lord cast down large hailstones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died from the hailstones than the children of Israel killed with the sword.
12 Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel:
(S)“Sun, stand still over Gibeon;
And Moon, in the Valley of (T)Aijalon.”
13 So the sun stood still,
And the moon stopped,
Till the people had revenge
Upon their enemies.
(U)Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. 14 And there has been (V)no day like that, before it or after it, that the Lord heeded the voice of a man; for (W)the Lord fought for Israel.
15 (X)Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
The Amorite Kings Executed
16 But these five kings had fled and hidden themselves in a cave at Makkedah. 17 And it was told Joshua, saying, “The five kings have been found hidden in the cave at Makkedah.”
18 So Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to guard them. 19 And do not stay there yourselves, but pursue your enemies, and attack their rear guard. Do not allow them to enter their cities, for the Lord your God has delivered them into your hand.” 20 Then it happened, while Joshua and the children of Israel made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they had finished, that those who escaped entered fortified cities. 21 And all the people returned to the camp, to Joshua at Makkedah, in peace.
(Y)No one [a]moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
22 Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings to me from the cave.” 23 And they did so, and brought out those five kings to him from the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
24 So it was, when they brought out those kings to Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said to the captains of the men of war who went with him, “Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings.” And they drew near and (Z)put their feet on their necks. 25 Then Joshua said to [b]them, (AA)“Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed; be strong and of good courage, for (AB)thus the Lord will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.” 26 And afterward Joshua struck [c]them and killed them, and hanged them on five trees; and they (AC)were hanging on the trees until evening. 27 So it was at the time of the going down of the sun that Joshua commanded, and they (AD)took them down from the trees, cast them into the cave where they had been hidden, and laid large stones against the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.
Conquest of the Southland
28 On that day Joshua took Makkedah, and struck it and its king with the edge of the sword. He utterly (AE)destroyed [d]them—all the people who were in it. He let none remain. He also did to the king of Makkedah (AF)as he had done to the king of Jericho.
29 Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to (AG)Libnah; and they fought against Libnah. 30 And the Lord also delivered it and its king into the hand of Israel; he struck it and all the people who were in it with the edge of the sword. He let none remain in it, but did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Then Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish; and they encamped against it and fought against it. 32 And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, who took it on the second day, and struck it and all the people who were in it with the edge of the sword, according to all that he had done to Libnah. 33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua struck him and his people, until he left him none remaining.
34 From Lachish Joshua passed to Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it and fought against it. 35 They took it on that day and struck it with the edge of the sword; all the people who were in it he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.
36 So Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, to (AH)Hebron; and they fought against it. 37 And they took it and struck it with the edge of the sword—its king, all its cities, and all the people who were in it; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon, but utterly destroyed it and all the people who were in it.
38 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to (AI)Debir; and they fought against it. 39 And he took it and its king and all its cities; they struck them with the edge of the sword and utterly destroyed all the people who were in it. He left none remaining; as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and its king, as he had done also to Libnah and its king.
40 So Joshua conquered all the land: the (AJ)mountain country and the [e]South and the lowland and the wilderness slopes, and (AK)all their kings; he left none remaining, but (AL)utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded. 41 And Joshua conquered them from (AM)Kadesh Barnea as far as (AN)Gaza, (AO)and all the country of Goshen, even as far as Gibeon. 42 All these kings and their land Joshua took at one time, (AP)because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. 43 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
The Northern Conquest
11 And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor heard these things, that he (AQ)sent to Jobab king of Madon, to the king (AR)of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph, 2 and to the kings who were from the north, in the mountains, in the plain south of (AS)Chinneroth, in the lowland, and in the heights (AT)of Dor on the west, 3 to the Canaanites in the east and in the west, the (AU)Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite in the mountains, (AV)and the Hivite below (AW)Hermon (AX)in the land of Mizpah. 4 So they went out, they and all their armies with them, as many people (AY)as the sand that is on the seashore in multitude, with very many horses and chariots. 5 And when all these kings had [f]met together, they came and camped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.
6 But the Lord said to Joshua, (AZ)“Do not be afraid because of them, for tomorrow about this time I will deliver all of them slain before Israel. You shall (BA)hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.” 7 So Joshua and all the people of war with him came against them suddenly by the waters of Merom, and they attacked them. 8 And the Lord delivered them into the hand of Israel, who defeated them and chased them to [g]Greater (BB)Sidon, to the [h]Brook (BC)Misrephoth, and to the Valley of Mizpah eastward; they attacked them until they left none of them remaining. 9 So Joshua did to them as the Lord had told him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.
10 Joshua turned back at that time and took Hazor, and struck its king with the sword; for Hazor was formerly the head of all those kingdoms. 11 And they struck all the people who were in it with the edge of the sword, (BD)utterly destroying them. There was none left (BE)breathing. Then he burned Hazor with fire.
12 So all the cities of those kings, and all their kings, Joshua took and struck with the edge of the sword. He utterly destroyed them, (BF)as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded. 13 But as for the cities that stood on their [i]mounds, Israel burned none of them, except Hazor only, which Joshua burned. 14 And all the (BG)spoil of these cities and the livestock, the children of Israel took as booty for themselves; but they struck every man with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them, and they left none breathing. 15 (BH)As the Lord had commanded Moses His servant, so (BI)Moses commanded Joshua, and (BJ)so Joshua did. [j]He left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.
Summary of Joshua’s Conquests
16 Thus Joshua took all this land: (BK)the mountain country, all the South, (BL)all the land of Goshen, the lowland, and the Jordan [k]plain—the mountains of Israel and its lowlands, 17 (BM)from [l]Mount Halak and the ascent to Seir, even as far as Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. He captured (BN)all their kings, and struck them down and killed them. 18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings. 19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, except (BO)the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. All the others they took in battle. 20 For (BP)it was of the Lord [m]to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that He might utterly destroy them, and that they might receive no mercy, but that He might destroy them, (BQ)as the Lord had commanded Moses.
21 And at that time Joshua came and cut off (BR)the Anakim from the mountains: from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel; Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities. 22 None of the Anakim were left in the land of the children of Israel; they remained only (BS)in Gaza, in Gath, (BT)and in Ashdod.
23 So Joshua took the whole land, (BU)according to all that the Lord had said to Moses; and Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel (BV)according to their divisions by their tribes. Then the land (BW)rested from war.
The Kings Conquered by Moses(BX)
12 These are the kings of the land whom the children of Israel defeated, and whose land they possessed on the other side of the Jordan toward the rising of the sun, (BY)from the River Arnon (BZ)to Mount Hermon, and all the eastern Jordan plain: 2 One king was (CA)Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon and ruled half of Gilead, from Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, from the middle of that river, even as far as the River Jabbok, which is the border of the Ammonites, 3 and (CB)the eastern Jordan plain from the [n]Sea of Chinneroth as far as the [o]Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea), (CC)the road to Beth Jeshimoth, and [p]southward below (CD)the[q] slopes of Pisgah. 4 The other king was (CE)Og king of Bashan and his territory, who was of (CF)the remnant of the giants, (CG)who dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei, 5 and reigned over (CH)Mount Hermon, (CI)over Salcah, over all Bashan, (CJ)as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and over half of Gilead to the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.
6 (CK)These Moses the servant of the Lord and the children of Israel had conquered; and (CL)Moses the servant of the Lord had given it as a possession to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh.
The Kings Conquered by Joshua
7 And these are the kings of the country (CM)which Joshua and the children of Israel conquered on this side of the Jordan, on the west, from Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon as far as [r]Mount Halak and the ascent to (CN)Seir, which Joshua (CO)gave to the tribes of Israel as a possession according to their divisions, 8 (CP)in the mountain country, in the lowlands, in the Jordan plain, in the slopes, in the wilderness, and in the South—(CQ)the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: 9 (CR)the king of Jericho, one; (CS)the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one; 10 (CT)the king of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one; 11 the king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one; 12 the king of Eglon, one; (CU)the king of Gezer, one; 13 (CV)the king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one; 14 the king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one; 15 (CW)the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one; 16 (CX)the king of Makkedah, one; (CY)the king of Bethel, one; 17 the king of Tappuah, one; (CZ)the king of Hepher, one; 18 the king of Aphek, one; the king of [s]Lasharon, one; 19 the king of Madon, one; (DA)the king of Hazor, one; 20 the king of (DB)Shimron Meron, one; the king of Achshaph, one; 21 the king of Taanach, one; the king of Megiddo, one; 22 (DC)the king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam in Carmel, one; 23 the king of Dor in the (DD)heights of Dor, one; the king of (DE)the people of Gilgal, one; 24 the king of Tirzah, one—(DF)all the kings, thirty-one.
Remaining Land to Be Conquered
13 Now Joshua (DG)was old, advanced in years. And the Lord said to him: “You are old, advanced in years, and there remains very much land yet to be possessed. 2 (DH)This is the land that yet remains: (DI)all the territory of the Philistines and all (DJ)that of the Geshurites, 3 (DK)from Sihor, which is east of Egypt, as far as the border of Ekron northward (which is counted as Canaanite); the (DL)five lords of the Philistines—the Gazites, the Ashdodites, the Ashkelonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also (DM)the Avites; 4 from the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians (DN)as far as Aphek, to the border of (DO)the Amorites; 5 the land of (DP)the [t]Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, (DQ)from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon as far as the entrance to Hamath; 6 all the inhabitants of the mountains from Lebanon as far as (DR)the [u]Brook Misrephoth, and all the Sidonians—them (DS)I will drive out from before the children of Israel; only (DT)divide[v] it by lot to Israel as an inheritance, as I have commanded you. 7 Now therefore, divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”
The Land Divided East of the Jordan
8 With the other half-tribe the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, (DU)which Moses had given them, (DV)beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord had given them: 9 from Aroer which is on the bank of the River Arnon, and the town that is in the midst of the ravine, (DW)and all the plain of Medeba as far as Dibon; 10 (DX)all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the border of the children of Ammon; 11 (DY)Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites, all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salcah; 12 all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei, who remained of (DZ)the remnant of the giants; (EA)for Moses had [w]defeated and [x]cast out these.
13 Nevertheless the children of Israel (EB)did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maachathites, but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.
14 (EC)Only to the tribe of Levi he had given [y]no inheritance; the sacrifices of the Lord God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, (ED)as He said to them.
The Land of Reuben
15 (EE)And Moses had given to the tribe of the children of Reuben an inheritance according to their families. 16 Their territory was (EF)from Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, (EG)and the city that is in the midst of the ravine, (EH)and all the plain by Medeba; 17 (EI)Heshbon and all its cities that are in the plain: Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, 18 (EJ)Jahaza, Kedemoth, Mephaath, 19 (EK)Kirjathaim, (EL)Sibmah, Zereth Shahar on the mountain of the valley, 20 Beth Peor, (EM)the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth— 21 (EN)all the cities of the plain and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, (EO)whom Moses had struck (EP)with the princes of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, who were princes of Sihon dwelling in the country. 22 The children of Israel also killed with the sword (EQ)Balaam the son of Beor, the [z]soothsayer, among those who were killed by them. 23 And the border of the children of Reuben was the bank of the Jordan. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben according to their families, the cities and their villages.
The Land of Gad
24 (ER)Moses also had given an inheritance to the tribe of Gad, to the children of Gad according to their families. 25 (ES)Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, (ET)and half the land of the Ammonites as far as Aroer, which is before (EU)Rabbah, 26 and from Heshbon to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir, 27 and in the valley (EV)Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, (EW)Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, with the Jordan as its border, as far as the edge (EX)of the [aa]Sea of Chinnereth, on the other side of the Jordan eastward. 28 This is the inheritance of the children of Gad according to their families, the cities and their villages.
Half the Tribe of Manasseh (East)
29 (EY)Moses also had given an inheritance to half the tribe of Manasseh; it was for half the tribe of the children of Manasseh according to their families: 30 Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and (EZ)all the towns of Jair which are in Bashan, sixty cities; 31 half of Gilead, and (FA)Ashtaroth and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the (FB)children of Machir the son of Manasseh, for half of the children of Machir according to their families.
32 These are the areas which Moses had [ab]distributed as an inheritance in the plains of Moab on the other side of the Jordan, by Jericho eastward. 33 (FC)But to the tribe of Levi Moses had given no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel was their inheritance, (FD)as He had said to them.
The Land Divided West of the Jordan
14 These are the areas which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, (FE)which Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel distributed as an inheritance to them. 2 Their inheritance was (FF)by lot, as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes and the half-tribe. 3 (FG)For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe on the other side of the Jordan; but to the Levites he had given no inheritance among them. 4 For (FH)the children of Joseph were two tribes: Manasseh and Ephraim. And they gave no part to the Levites in the land, except (FI)cities to dwell in, with their common-lands for their livestock and their property. 5 (FJ)As the Lord had commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did; and they divided the land.
Caleb Inherits Hebron
6 Then the children of Judah came to Joshua in Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the (FK)Kenizzite said to him: “You know (FL)the word which the Lord said to Moses the man of God concerning (FM)you and me in Kadesh Barnea. 7 I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord (FN)sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land, and I brought back word to him as it was in my heart. 8 Nevertheless (FO)my brethren who went up with me made the [ac]heart of the people melt, but I wholly (FP)followed the Lord my God. 9 So Moses swore on that day, saying, (FQ)‘Surely the land (FR)where your foot has trodden shall be your inheritance and your children’s forever, because you have wholly followed the Lord my God.’ 10 And now, behold, the Lord has kept me (FS)alive, (FT)as He said, these forty-five years, ever since the Lord spoke this word to Moses while Israel [ad]wandered in the wilderness; and now, here I am this day, eighty-five years old. 11 (FU)As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both (FV)for going out and for coming in. 12 Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how (FW)the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. (FX)It may be that the Lord will be with me, and (FY)I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said.”
13 And Joshua (FZ)blessed him, (GA)and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as an inheritance. 14 (GB)Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he (GC)wholly followed the Lord God of Israel. 15 And (GD)the name of Hebron formerly was Kirjath Arba (Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim).
(GE)Then the land had rest from war.
The Land of Judah
15 So this was the [ae]lot of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families:
(GF)The border of Edom at the (GG)Wilderness of Zin southward was the extreme southern boundary. 2 And their (GH)southern border began at the shore of the Salt Sea, from the bay that faces southward. 3 Then it went out to the southern side of (GI)the Ascent of Akrabbim, passed along to Zin, ascended on the south side of Kadesh Barnea, passed along to Hezron, went up to Adar, and went around to Karkaa. 4 From there it passed (GJ)toward Azmon and went out to the Brook of Egypt; and the border ended at the sea. This shall be your southern border.
5 The east border was the Salt Sea as far as the mouth of the Jordan.
And the (GK)border on the northern quarter began at the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan. 6 The border went up to (GL)Beth Hoglah and passed north of Beth Arabah; and the border went up (GM)to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben. 7 Then the border went up toward (GN)Debir from (GO)the Valley of Achor, and it turned northward toward Gilgal, which is before the Ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the valley. The border continued toward the waters of En Shemesh and ended at (GP)En Rogel. 8 And the border went up (GQ)by the Valley of the Son of Hinnom to the southern slope of the (GR)Jebusite city (which is Jerusalem). The border went up to the top of the mountain that lies before the Valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the Valley (GS)of [af]Rephaim northward. 9 Then the border went around from the top of the hill to (GT)the fountain of the water of Nephtoah, and extended to the cities of Mount Ephron. And the border went around (GU)to Baalah (which is (GV)Kirjath Jearim). 10 Then the border [ag]turned westward from Baalah to Mount Seir, passed along to the side of Mount Jearim on the north (which is Chesalon), went down to Beth Shemesh, and passed on to (GW)Timnah. 11 And the border went out to the side of (GX)Ekron northward. Then the border went around to Shicron, passed along to Mount Baalah, and extended to Jabneel; and the border ended at the sea.
12 The west border was (GY)the coastline of the Great Sea. This is the boundary of the children of Judah all around according to their families.
Caleb Occupies Hebron and Debir(GZ)
13 (HA)Now to Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a share among the children of (HB)Judah, according to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, namely, (HC)Kirjath Arba, which is Hebron (Arba was the father of Anak). 14 Caleb drove out (HD)the three sons of Anak from there: (HE)Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak. 15 Then (HF)he went up from there to the inhabitants of Debir (formerly the name of Debir was Kirjath Sepher).
16 (HG)And Caleb said, “He who [ah]attacks Kirjath Sepher and takes it, to him I will give Achsah my daughter as wife.” 17 So (HH)Othniel the (HI)son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it; and he gave him (HJ)Achsah his daughter as wife. 18 (HK)Now it was so, when she came to him, that she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. So (HL)she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you wish?” 19 She answered, “Give me a (HM)blessing; since you have given me land in the South, give me also springs of water.” So he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
The Cities of Judah
20 This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families:
21 The cities at the limits of the tribe of the children of Judah, toward the border of Edom in the South, were Kabzeel, (HN)Eder, Jagur, 22 Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah, 23 Kedesh, Hazor, Ithnan, 24 (HO)Ziph, Telem, Bealoth, 25 Hazor, Hadattah, Kerioth, Hezron (which is Hazor), 26 Amam, Shema, Moladah, 27 Hazar Gaddah, Heshmon, Beth Pelet, 28 Hazar Shual, (HP)Beersheba, Bizjothjah, 29 Baalah, Ijim, Ezem, 30 Eltolad, Chesil, (HQ)Hormah, 31 (HR)Ziklag, Madmannah, Sansannah, 32 Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain, and (HS)Rimmon: all the cities are twenty-nine, with their villages.
33 In the lowland: (HT)Eshtaol, Zorah, Ashnah, 34 Zanoah, En Gannim, Tappuah, Enam, 35 Jarmuth, (HU)Adullam, Socoh, Azekah, 36 Sharaim, Adithaim, Gederah, and Gederothaim: fourteen cities with their villages; 37 Zenan, Hadashah, Migdal Gad, 38 Dilean, Mizpah, (HV)Joktheel, 39 (HW)Lachish, Bozkath, (HX)Eglon, 40 Cabbon, [ai]Lahmas, Kithlish, 41 Gederoth, Beth Dagon, Naamah, and Makkedah: sixteen cities with their villages; 42 (HY)Libnah, Ether, Ashan, 43 Jiphtah, Ashnah, Nezib, 44 Keilah, Achzib, and Mareshah: nine cities with their villages; 45 Ekron, with its towns and villages; 46 from Ekron to the sea, all that lay near (HZ)Ashdod, with their villages; 47 Ashdod with its towns and villages, Gaza with its towns and villages—as far as (IA)the Brook of Egypt and (IB)the Great Sea with its coastline.
48 And in the mountain country: Shamir, Jattir, Sochoh, 49 Dannah, Kirjath Sannah (which is Debir), 50 Anab, Eshtemoh, Anim, 51 (IC)Goshen, Holon, and Giloh: eleven cities with their villages; 52 Arab, Dumah, Eshean, 53 Janum, Beth Tappuah, Aphekah, 54 Humtah, (ID)Kirjath Arba (which is Hebron), and Zior: nine cities with their villages; 55 (IE)Maon, Carmel, Ziph, Juttah, 56 Jezreel, Jokdeam, Zanoah, 57 Kain, Gibeah, and Timnah: ten cities with their villages; 58 Halhul, Beth Zur, Gedor, 59 Maarath, Beth Anoth, and Eltekon: six cities with their villages; 60 (IF)Kirjath Baal (which is Kirjath Jearim) and Rabbah: two cities with their villages.
61 In the wilderness: Beth Arabah, Middin, Secacah, 62 Nibshan, the City of Salt, and (IG)En Gedi: six cities with their villages.
63 As for the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, (IH)the children of Judah could not drive them out; (II)but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem to this day.
Ephraim and West Manasseh
16 The lot [aj]fell to the children of Joseph from the Jordan, by Jericho, to the waters of Jericho on the east, to the (IJ)wilderness that goes up from Jericho through the mountains to [ak]Bethel, 2 then went out [al]from (IK)Bethel to Luz, passed along to the border of the Archites at Ataroth, 3 and went down westward to the boundary of the Japhletites, (IL)as far as the boundary of Lower Beth Horon to (IM)Gezer; and [am]it ended at the sea.
4 (IN)So the children of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, took their [an]inheritance.
The Land of Ephraim
5 (IO)The border of the children of Ephraim, according to their families, was thus: The border of their inheritance on the east side was (IP)Ataroth Addar (IQ)as far as Upper Beth Horon.
6 And the border went out toward the sea on the north side of (IR)Michmethath; then the border went around eastward to Taanath Shiloh, and passed by it on the east of Janohah. 7 Then it went down from Janohah to Ataroth and [ao]Naarah, reached to Jericho, and came out at the Jordan.
8 The border went out from (IS)Tappuah westward to the (IT)Brook Kanah, and [ap]it ended at the sea. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Ephraim according to their families. 9 (IU)The separate cities for the children of Ephraim were among the inheritance of the children of Manasseh, all the cities with their villages.
10 (IV)And they did not drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites to this day and have become forced laborers.
The Other Half-Tribe of Manasseh (West)
17 There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the (IW)firstborn of Joseph: namely for (IX)Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war; therefore he was given (IY)Gilead and Bashan. 2 And there was a lot for (IZ)the rest of the children of Manasseh according to their families: (JA)for the children of [aq]Abiezer, the children of Helek, (JB)the children of Asriel, the children of Shechem, (JC)the children of Hepher, and the children of Shemida; these were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph according to their families.
3 But (JD)Zelophehad the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but only daughters. And these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 4 And they came near before (JE)Eleazar the priest, before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the rulers, saying, (JF)“The Lord commanded Moses to give us an [ar]inheritance among our brothers.” Therefore, according to the commandment of the Lord, he gave them an inheritance among their father’s brothers. 5 Ten shares fell to (JG)Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were on the other side of the Jordan, 6 because the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance among his sons; and the rest of Manasseh’s sons had the land of Gilead.
7 And the territory of Manasseh was from Asher to (JH)Michmethath, that lies east of Shechem; and the border went along south to the inhabitants of En Tappuah. 8 Manasseh had the land of Tappuah, but (JI)Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim. 9 And the [as]border descended to the [at]Brook Kanah, southward to the brook. (JJ)These cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh. The border of Manasseh was on the north side of the brook; and it ended at the sea.
10 Southward it was Ephraim’s, northward it was Manasseh’s, and the sea was its border. Manasseh’s territory was adjoining Asher on the north and Issachar on the east. 11 And in Issachar and in Asher, (JK)Manasseh had (JL)Beth Shean and its towns, Ibleam and its towns, the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, the inhabitants of En Dor and its towns, the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns—three hilly regions. 12 Yet (JM)the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities, but the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land. 13 And it happened, when the children of Israel grew strong, that they put the Canaanites to (JN)forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.
More Land for Ephraim and Manasseh
14 (JO)Then the children of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, “Why have you given us only (JP)one [au]lot and one share to inherit, since we are (JQ)a great people, inasmuch as the Lord has blessed us until now?”
15 So Joshua answered them, “If you are a great people, then go up to the forest country and clear a place for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and the giants, since the mountains of Ephraim are too confined for you.”
16 But the children of Joseph said, “The mountain country is not enough for us; and all the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley have (JR)chariots of iron, both those who are of Beth Shean and its towns and those who are (JS)of the Valley of Jezreel.”
17 And Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph—to Ephraim and Manasseh—saying, “You are a great people and have great power; you shall not have only one [av]lot, 18 but the mountain country shall be yours. Although it is wooded, you shall cut it down, and its [aw]farthest extent shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Canaanites, (JT)though they have iron chariots and are strong.”
The Remainder of the Land Divided
18 Now the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together (JU)at Shiloh, and (JV)set up the tabernacle of meeting there. And the land was subdued before them. 2 But there remained among the children of Israel seven tribes which had not yet received their inheritance.
3 Then Joshua said to the children of Israel: (JW)“How long will you neglect to go and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers has given you? 4 Pick out from among you three men for each tribe, and I will send them; they shall rise and go through the land, survey it according to their inheritance, and come back to me. 5 And they shall divide it into seven parts. (JX)Judah shall remain in their territory on the south, and the (JY)house of Joseph shall remain in their territory on the north. 6 You shall therefore [ax]survey the land in seven parts and bring the survey here to me, (JZ)that I may cast lots for you here before the Lord our God. 7 (KA)But the Levites have no part among you, for the priesthood of the Lord is their inheritance. (KB)And Gad, Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan on the east, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave them.”
8 Then the men arose to go away; and Joshua charged those who went to [ay]survey the land, saying, “Go, walk (KC)through the land, survey it, and come back to me, that I may cast lots for you here before the Lord in Shiloh.” 9 So the men went, passed through the land, and [az]wrote the survey in a book in seven parts by cities; and they came to Joshua at the camp in Shiloh. 10 Then Joshua cast (KD)lots for them in Shiloh before the Lord, and there (KE)Joshua divided the land to the children of Israel according to their [ba]divisions.
The Land of Benjamin
11 (KF)Now the lot of the tribe of the children of Benjamin came up according to their families, and the territory of their lot came out between the children of Judah and the children of Joseph. 12 (KG)Their border on the north side began at the Jordan, and the border went up to the side of Jericho on the north, and went up through the mountains westward; it ended at the Wilderness of Beth Aven. 13 The border went over from there toward Luz, to the side of Luz (KH)(which is Bethel) southward; and the border descended to Ataroth Addar, near the hill that lies on the south side (KI)of Lower Beth Horon.
14 Then the border extended around the west side to the south, from the hill that lies before Beth Horon southward; and [bb]it ended at (KJ)Kirjath Baal (which is Kirjath Jearim), a city of the children of Judah. This was the west side.
15 The south side began at the end of Kirjath Jearim, and the border extended on the west and went out to (KK)the spring of the waters of Nephtoah. 16 Then the border came down to the end of the mountain that lies before (KL)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, which is in the Valley of the [bc]Rephaim on the north, descended to the Valley of Hinnom, to the side of the Jebusite city on the south, and descended to (KM)En Rogel. 17 And it went around from the north, went out to En Shemesh, and extended toward Geliloth, which is before the Ascent of Adummim, and descended to (KN)the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben. 18 Then it passed along toward the north side of [bd]Arabah, and went down to Arabah. 19 And the border passed along to the north side of Beth Hoglah; then [be]the border ended at the north bay at the (KO)Salt Sea, at the south end of the Jordan. This was the southern boundary.
20 The Jordan was its border on the east side. This was the inheritance of the children of Benjamin, according to its boundaries all around, according to their families.
21 Now the cities of the tribe of the children of Benjamin, according to their families, were Jericho, Beth Hoglah, Emek Keziz, 22 Beth Arabah, Zemaraim, Bethel, 23 Avim, Parah, Ophrah, 24 Chephar Haammoni, Ophni, and Gaba: twelve cities with their villages; 25 (KP)Gibeon, (KQ)Ramah, Beeroth, 26 Mizpah, Chephirah, Mozah, 27 Rekem, Irpeel, Taralah, 28 Zelah, Eleph, (KR)Jebus (which is Jerusalem), Gibeath, and Kirjath: fourteen cities with their villages. This was the inheritance of the children of Benjamin according to their families.
Simeon’s Inheritance with Judah
19 The (KS)second lot came out for Simeon, for the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families. (KT)And their inheritance was within the inheritance of the children of Judah. 2 (KU)They had in their inheritance Beersheba (Sheba), Moladah, 3 Hazar Shual, Balah, Ezem, 4 Eltolad, Bethul, Hormah, 5 Ziklag, Beth Marcaboth, Hazar Susah, 6 Beth Lebaoth, and Sharuhen: thirteen cities and their villages; 7 Ain, Rimmon, Ether, and Ashan: four cities and their villages; 8 and all the villages that were all around these cities as far as Baalath Beer, (KV)Ramah of the South. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families.
9 The inheritance of the children of Simeon was included in the share of the children of Judah, for the share of the children of Judah was [bf]too much for them. (KW)Therefore the children of Simeon had their inheritance within the inheritance of [bg]that people.
The Land of Zebulun
10 The third lot came out for the children of Zebulun according to their families, and the border of their inheritance was as far as Sarid. 11 (KX)Their border went toward the west and to Maralah, went to Dabbasheth, and extended along the brook that is (KY)east of Jokneam. 12 Then from Sarid it went eastward toward the sunrise along the border of Chisloth Tabor, and went out toward (KZ)Daberath, bypassing Japhia. 13 And from there it passed along on the east of (LA)Gath Hepher, toward Eth Kazin, and extended to Rimmon, which borders on Neah. 14 Then the border went around it on the north side of Hannathon, and [bh]it ended in the Valley of Jiphthah El. 15 Included were Kattath, Nahallal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem: twelve cities with their villages. 16 This was the inheritance of the children of Zebulun according to their families, these cities with their villages.
The Land of Issachar
17 The fourth lot came out to Issachar, for the children of Issachar according to their families. 18 And their territory went to Jezreel, and included Chesulloth, Shunem, 19 Haphraim, Shion, Anaharath, 20 Rabbith, Kishion, Abez, 21 Remeth, En Gannim, En Haddah, and Beth Pazzez. 22 And the border reached to Tabor, Shahazimah, and (LB)Beth Shemesh; their border ended at the Jordan: sixteen cities with their villages. 23 This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families, the cities and their villages.
The Land of Asher
24 (LC)The fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families. 25 And their territory included Helkath, Hali, Beten, Achshaph, 26 Alammelech, Amad, and Mishal; it reached to (LD)Mount Carmel westward, along the Brook Shihor Libnath. 27 It turned toward the sunrise to Beth Dagon; and it reached to Zebulun and to the Valley of Jiphthah El, then northward beyond Beth Emek and Neiel, bypassing (LE)Cabul which was on the left, 28 including [bi]Ebron, Rehob, Hammon, and Kanah, (LF)as far as Greater Sidon. 29 And the border turned to Ramah and to the fortified city of Tyre; then the border turned to Hosah, and ended at the sea by the region of (LG)Achzib. 30 Also Ummah, Aphek, and Rehob were included: twenty-two cities with their villages. 31 This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families, these cities with their villages.
The Land of Naphtali
32 (LH)The sixth lot came out to the children of Naphtali, for the children of Naphtali according to their families. 33 And their border began at Heleph, enclosing the territory from the terebinth tree in Zaanannim, Adami Nekeb, and Jabneel, as far as Lakkum; [bj]it ended at the Jordan. 34 (LI)From Heleph the border extended westward to Aznoth Tabor, and went out from there toward Hukkok; it adjoined Zebulun on the south side and Asher on the west side, and ended at Judah by the Jordan toward the sunrise. 35 And the fortified cities are Ziddim, Zer, Hammath, Rakkath, Chinnereth, 36 Adamah, Ramah, Hazor, 37 (LJ)Kedesh, Edrei, En Hazor, 38 Iron, Migdal El, Horem, Beth Anath, and Beth Shemesh: nineteen cities with their villages. 39 This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to their families, the cities and their villages.
The Land of Dan
40 (LK)The seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families. 41 And the territory of their inheritance was Zorah, (LL)Eshtaol, Ir Shemesh, 42 (LM)Shaalabbin, (LN)Aijalon, Jethlah, 43 Elon, Timnah, (LO)Ekron, 44 Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Baalath, 45 Jehud, Bene Berak, Gath Rimmon, 46 Me Jarkon, and Rakkon, with the region [bk]near [bl]Joppa. 47 And the (LP)border of the children of Dan went beyond these, because the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem and took it; and they struck it with the edge of the sword, took possession of it, and dwelt in it. They called Leshem, (LQ)Dan, after the name of Dan their father. 48 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families, these cities with their villages.
Joshua’s Inheritance
49 When they had [bm]made an end of dividing the land as an inheritance according to their borders, the children of Israel gave an inheritance among them to Joshua the son of Nun. 50 According to the word of the Lord they gave him the city which he asked for, (LR)Timnath (LS)Serah in the mountains of Ephraim; and he built the city and dwelt in it.
51 (LT)These were the inheritances which Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel divided as an inheritance by lot (LU)in Shiloh before the Lord, at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. So they made an end of dividing the country.

The Sun Stands Still
10 Now Adoni-Zedek(A) king of Jerusalem(B) heard that Joshua had taken Ai(C) and totally destroyed[a](D) it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon(E) had made a treaty of peace(F) with Israel and had become their allies. 2 He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters. 3 So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem appealed to Hoham king of Hebron,(G) Piram king of Jarmuth,(H) Japhia king of Lachish(I) and Debir(J) king of Eglon.(K) 4 “Come up and help me attack Gibeon,” he said, “because it has made peace(L) with Joshua and the Israelites.”
5 Then the five kings(M) of the Amorites(N)—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon—joined forces. They moved up with all their troops and took up positions against Gibeon and attacked it.
6 The Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal:(O) “Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us.”
7 So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army,(P) including all the best fighting men. 8 The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid(Q) of them; I have given them into your hand.(R) Not one of them will be able to withstand you.”(S)
9 After an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise. 10 The Lord threw them into confusion(T) before Israel,(U) so Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely at Gibeon.(V) Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon(W) and cut them down all the way to Azekah(X) and Makkedah.(Y) 11 As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the Lord hurled large hailstones(Z) down on them,(AA) and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites.
12 On the day the Lord gave the Amorites(AB) over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:
“Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.(AC)”
13 So the sun stood still,(AD)
and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on[b] its enemies,
as it is written in the Book of Jashar.(AE)
The sun stopped(AF) in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. 14 There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting(AG) for Israel!
15 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.(AH)
Five Amorite Kings Killed
16 Now the five kings had fled(AI) and hidden in the cave at Makkedah. 17 When Joshua was told that the five kings had been found hiding in the cave at Makkedah, 18 he said, “Roll large rocks up to the mouth of the cave, and post some men there to guard it. 19 But don’t stop; pursue your enemies! Attack them from the rear and don’t let them reach their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.”
20 So Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely,(AJ) but a few survivors managed to reach their fortified cities.(AK) 21 The whole army then returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one uttered a word against the Israelites.
22 Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.” 23 So they brought the five kings out of the cave—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. 24 When they had brought these kings(AL) to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had come with him, “Come here and put your feet(AM) on the necks of these kings.” So they came forward and placed their feet(AN) on their necks.
25 Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous.(AO) This is what the Lord will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.” 26 Then Joshua put the kings to death and exposed their bodies on five poles, and they were left hanging on the poles until evening.
27 At sunset(AP) Joshua gave the order and they took them down from the poles and threw them into the cave where they had been hiding. At the mouth of the cave they placed large rocks, which are there to this day.(AQ)
Southern Cities Conquered
28 That day Joshua took Makkedah. He put the city and its king to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it. He left no survivors.(AR) And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.(AS)
29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah(AT) and attacked it. 30 The Lord also gave that city and its king into Israel’s hand. The city and everyone in it Joshua put to the sword. He left no survivors there. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish;(AU) he took up positions against it and attacked it. 32 The Lord gave Lachish into Israel’s hands, and Joshua took it on the second day. The city and everyone in it he put to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. 33 Meanwhile, Horam king of Gezer(AV) had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army—until no survivors were left.
34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Lachish to Eglon;(AW) they took up positions against it and attacked it. 35 They captured it that same day and put it to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it, just as they had done to Lachish.
36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron(AX) and attacked it. 37 They took the city and put it to the sword, together with its king, its villages and everyone(AY) in it. They left no survivors. Just as at Eglon, they totally destroyed it and everyone in it.
38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned around and attacked Debir.(AZ) 39 They took the city, its king and its villages, and put them to the sword. Everyone in it they totally destroyed. They left no survivors. They did to Debir and its king as they had done to Libnah and its king and to Hebron.(BA)
40 So Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev,(BB) the western foothills and the mountain slopes,(BC) together with all their kings.(BD) He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded.(BE) 41 Joshua subdued them from Kadesh Barnea(BF) to Gaza(BG) and from the whole region of Goshen(BH) to Gibeon. 42 All these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought(BI) for Israel.
43 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.(BJ)
Northern Kings Defeated
11 When Jabin(BK) king of Hazor(BL) heard of this, he sent word to Jobab king of Madon, to the kings of Shimron(BM) and Akshaph,(BN) 2 and to the northern kings who were in the mountains, in the Arabah(BO) south of Kinnereth,(BP) in the western foothills and in Naphoth Dor(BQ) on the west; 3 to the Canaanites in the east and west; to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites(BR) and Jebusites in the hill country;(BS) and to the Hivites(BT) below Hermon(BU) in the region of Mizpah.(BV) 4 They came out with all their troops and a large number of horses and chariots—a huge army, as numerous as the sand on the seashore.(BW) 5 All these kings joined forces(BX) and made camp together at the Waters of Merom(BY) to fight against Israel.
6 The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, because by this time tomorrow I will hand(BZ) all of them, slain, over to Israel. You are to hamstring(CA) their horses and burn their chariots.”(CB)
7 So Joshua and his whole army came against them suddenly at the Waters of Merom and attacked them, 8 and the Lord gave them into the hand of Israel. They defeated them and pursued them all the way to Greater Sidon,(CC) to Misrephoth Maim,(CD) and to the Valley of Mizpah on the east, until no survivors were left. 9 Joshua did to them as the Lord had directed: He hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.
10 At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor and put its king to the sword.(CE) (Hazor had been the head of all these kingdoms.) 11 Everyone in it they put to the sword. They totally destroyed[c] them,(CF) not sparing anyone that breathed,(CG) and he burned(CH) Hazor itself.
12 Joshua took all these royal cities and their kings and put them to the sword. He totally destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded.(CI) 13 Yet Israel did not burn any of the cities built on their mounds—except Hazor, which Joshua burned. 14 The Israelites carried off for themselves all the plunder and livestock of these cities, but all the people they put to the sword until they completely destroyed them, not sparing anyone that breathed.(CJ) 15 As the Lord commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua did it; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses.(CK)
16 So Joshua took this entire land: the hill country,(CL) all the Negev,(CM) the whole region of Goshen, the western foothills,(CN) the Arabah and the mountains of Israel with their foothills, 17 from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir,(CO) to Baal Gad(CP) in the Valley of Lebanon(CQ) below Mount Hermon.(CR) He captured all their kings and put them to death.(CS) 18 Joshua waged war against all these kings for a long time. 19 Except for the Hivites(CT) living in Gibeon,(CU) not one city made a treaty of peace(CV) with the Israelites, who took them all in battle. 20 For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts(CW) to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.(CX)
21 At that time Joshua went and destroyed the Anakites(CY) from the hill country: from Hebron, Debir(CZ) and Anab,(DA) from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua totally destroyed them and their towns. 22 No Anakites were left in Israelite territory; only in Gaza,(DB) Gath(DC) and Ashdod(DD) did any survive.
23 So Joshua took the entire land,(DE) just as the Lord had directed Moses, and he gave it as an inheritance(DF) to Israel according to their tribal divisions.(DG) Then the land had rest(DH) from war.(DI)
List of Defeated Kings
12 These are the kings of the land whom the Israelites had defeated and whose territory they took(DJ) over east of the Jordan,(DK) from the Arnon(DL) Gorge to Mount Hermon,(DM) including all the eastern side of the Arabah:(DN)
2 Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon.(DO)
He ruled from Aroer(DP) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge—from the middle of the gorge—to the Jabbok River,(DQ) which is the border of the Ammonites.(DR) This included half of Gilead.(DS) 3 He also ruled over the eastern Arabah from the Sea of Galilee[d](DT) to the Sea of the Arabah (that is, the Dead Sea(DU)), to Beth Jeshimoth,(DV) and then southward below the slopes of Pisgah.(DW)
4 And the territory of Og king of Bashan,(DX) one of the last of the Rephaites,(DY) who reigned in Ashtaroth(DZ) and Edrei.
5 He ruled over Mount Hermon, Salekah,(EA) all of Bashan(EB) to the border of the people of Geshur(EC) and Maakah,(ED) and half of Gilead(EE) to the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.
6 Moses, the servant of the Lord, and the Israelites conquered them.(EF) And Moses the servant of the Lord gave their land to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh to be their possession.(EG)
7 Here is a list of the kings of the land that Joshua and the Israelites conquered on the west side of the Jordan, from Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon(EH) to Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir. Joshua gave their lands as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel according to their tribal divisions. 8 The lands included the hill country, the western foothills, the Arabah, the mountain slopes, the wilderness and the Negev.(EI) These were the lands of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. Land Still to Be Taken
13 When Joshua had grown old,(FL) the Lord said to him, “You are now very old, and there are still very large areas of land to be taken over.
2 “This is the land that remains: all the regions of the Philistines(FM) and Geshurites,(FN) 3 from the Shihor River(FO) on the east of Egypt to the territory of Ekron(FP) on the north, all of it counted as Canaanite though held by the five Philistine rulers(FQ) in Gaza, Ashdod,(FR) Ashkelon,(FS) Gath and Ekron; the territory of the Avvites(FT) 4 on the south; all the land of the Canaanites, from Arah of the Sidonians as far as Aphek(FU) and the border of the Amorites;(FV) 5 the area of Byblos;(FW) and all Lebanon(FX) to the east, from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon(FY) to Lebo Hamath.(FZ)
6 “As for all the inhabitants of the mountain regions from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim,(GA) that is, all the Sidonians, I myself will drive them out(GB) before the Israelites. Be sure to allocate this land to Israel for an inheritance, as I have instructed you,(GC) 7 and divide it as an inheritance(GD) among the nine tribes and half of the tribe of Manasseh.”
Division of the Land East of the Jordan
8 The other half of Manasseh,[e] the Reubenites and the Gadites had received the inheritance that Moses had given them east of the Jordan, as he, the servant of the Lord, had assigned(GE) it to them.(GF)
9 It extended from Aroer(GG) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and included the whole plateau(GH) of Medeba as far as Dibon,(GI) 10 and all the towns of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon,(GJ) out to the border of the Ammonites.(GK) 11 It also included Gilead,(GL) the territory of the people of Geshur and Maakah, all of Mount Hermon and all Bashan as far as Salekah(GM)— 12 that is, the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan,(GN) who had reigned in Ashtaroth(GO) and Edrei.(GP) (He was the last of the Rephaites.(GQ)) Moses had defeated them and taken over their land.(GR) 13 But the Israelites did not drive out the people of Geshur(GS) and Maakah,(GT) so they continue to live among the Israelites to this day.(GU)
14 But to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance, since the food offerings presented to the Lord, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, as he promised them.(GV)
15 This is what Moses had given to the tribe of Reuben, according to its clans:
16 The territory from Aroer(GW) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and the whole plateau past Medeba(GX) 17 to Heshbon and all its towns on the plateau,(GY) including Dibon,(GZ) Bamoth Baal,(HA) Beth Baal Meon,(HB) 18 Jahaz,(HC) Kedemoth,(HD) Mephaath,(HE) 19 Kiriathaim,(HF) Sibmah,(HG) Zereth Shahar on the hill in the valley, 20 Beth Peor,(HH) the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth— 21 all the towns on the plateau(HI) and the entire realm of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled at Heshbon. Moses had defeated him and the Midianite chiefs,(HJ) Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba(HK)—princes allied with Sihon—who lived in that country. 22 In addition to those slain in battle, the Israelites had put to the sword Balaam son of Beor,(HL) who practiced divination.(HM) 23 The boundary of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the Reubenites, according to their clans.(HN)
24 This is what Moses had given to the tribe of Gad, according to its clans:
25 The territory of Jazer,(HO) all the towns of Gilead(HP) and half the Ammonite country as far as Aroer, near Rabbah;(HQ) 26 and from Heshbon(HR) to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim(HS) to the territory of Debir;(HT) 27 and in the valley, Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah,(HU) Sukkoth(HV) and Zaphon(HW) with the rest of the realm of Sihon king of Heshbon (the east side of the Jordan, the territory up to the end of the Sea of Galilee[f](HX)). 28 These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the Gadites,(HY) according to their clans.
29 This is what Moses had given to the half-tribe of Manasseh, that is, to half the family of the descendants of Manasseh, according to its clans:
30 The territory extending from Mahanaim(HZ) and including all of Bashan,(IA) the entire realm of Og king of Bashan(IB)—all the settlements of Jair(IC) in Bashan, sixty towns, 31 half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth and Edrei (the royal cities of Og in Bashan).(ID) This was for the descendants of Makir(IE) son of Manasseh—for half of the sons of Makir, according to their clans.(IF)
32 This is the inheritance Moses had given when he was in the plains of Moab(IG) across the Jordan east of Jericho.(IH) 33 But to the tribe of Levi, Moses had given no inheritance;(II) the Lord, the God of Israel, is their inheritance,(IJ) as he promised them.(IK)
Division of the Land West of the Jordan
14 Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance(IL) in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar(IM) the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel(IN) allotted(IO) to them.(IP) 2 Their inheritances were assigned by lot(IQ) to the nine and a half tribes,(IR) as the Lord had commanded through Moses. 3 Moses had granted the two and a half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan(IS) but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest,(IT) 4 for Joseph’s descendants had become two tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim.(IU) The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.(IV) 5 So the Israelites divided the land, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.(IW)
Allotment for Caleb
6 Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal,(IX) and Caleb son of Jephunneh(IY) the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God(IZ) at Kadesh Barnea(JA) about you and me.(JB) 7 I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea(JC) to explore the land.(JD) And I brought him back a report according to my convictions,(JE) 8 but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear.(JF) I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.(JG) 9 So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance(JH) and that of your children(JI) forever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.’[g]
10 “Now then, just as the Lord promised,(JJ) he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved(JK) about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old!(JL) 11 I am still as strong(JM) today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous(JN) to go out to battle now as I was then. 12 Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day.(JO) You yourself heard then that the Anakites(JP) were there and their cities were large and fortified,(JQ) but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”
13 Then Joshua blessed(JR) Caleb son of Jephunneh(JS) and gave him Hebron(JT) as his inheritance.(JU) 14 So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the Lord, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly.(JV) 15 (Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba(JW) after Arba,(JX) who was the greatest man among the Anakites.)
Then the land had rest(JY) from war.
Allotment for Judah(JZ)
15 The allotment for the tribe of Judah, according to its clans, extended down to the territory of Edom,(KA) to the Desert of Zin(KB) in the extreme south.(KC)
2 Their southern boundary started from the bay at the southern end of the Dead Sea,(KD) 3 crossed south of Scorpion Pass,(KE) continued on to Zin and went over to the south of Kadesh Barnea.(KF) Then it ran past Hezron up to Addar and curved around to Karka. 4 It then passed along to Azmon(KG) and joined the Wadi of Egypt,(KH) ending at the Mediterranean Sea. This is their[h] southern boundary.
5 The eastern boundary(KI) is the Dead Sea(KJ) as far as the mouth of the Jordan.
The northern boundary(KK) started from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan, 6 went up to Beth Hoglah(KL) and continued north of Beth Arabah(KM) to the Stone of Bohan(KN) son of Reuben. 7 The boundary then went up to Debir(KO) from the Valley of Achor(KP) and turned north to Gilgal,(KQ) which faces the Pass of Adummim south of the gorge. It continued along to the waters of En Shemesh(KR) and came out at En Rogel.(KS) 8 Then it ran up the Valley of Ben Hinnom(KT) along the southern slope of the Jebusite(KU) city (that is, Jerusalem(KV)). From there it climbed to the top of the hill west of the Hinnom Valley(KW) at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim.(KX) 9 From the hilltop the boundary headed toward the spring of the waters of Nephtoah,(KY) came out at the towns of Mount Ephron and went down toward Baalah(KZ) (that is, Kiriath Jearim).(LA) 10 Then it curved westward from Baalah(LB) to Mount Seir,(LC) ran along the northern slope of Mount Jearim (that is, Kesalon), continued down to Beth Shemesh(LD) and crossed to Timnah.(LE) 11 It went to the northern slope of Ekron,(LF) turned toward Shikkeron, passed along to Mount Baalah(LG) and reached Jabneel.(LH) The boundary ended at the sea.
12 The western boundary is the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea.(LI)
These are the boundaries around the people of Judah by their clans.
13 In accordance with the Lord’s command to him, Joshua gave to Caleb(LJ) son of Jephunneh a portion in Judah—Kiriath Arba(LK), that is, Hebron.(LL) (Arba was the forefather of Anak.)(LM) 14 From Hebron Caleb drove out the three Anakites(LN)—Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai,(LO) the sons of Anak.(LP) 15 From there he marched against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher). 16 And Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Aksah(LQ) in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.” 17 Othniel(LR) son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage.
18 One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him[i] to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What can I do for you?”
19 She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev,(LS) give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.(LT)
20 This is the inheritance of the tribe of Judah, according to its clans:
21 The southernmost towns of the tribe of Judah in the Negev(LU) toward the boundary of Edom were:
Kabzeel,(LV) Eder,(LW) Jagur, 22 Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah, 23 Kedesh,(LX) Hazor,(LY) Ithnan, 24 Ziph,(LZ) Telem, Bealoth, 25 Hazor Hadattah, Kerioth Hezron (that is, Hazor),(MA) 26 Amam, Shema, Moladah,(MB) 27 Hazar Gaddah, Heshmon, Beth Pelet, 28 Hazar Shual,(MC) Beersheba,(MD) Biziothiah, 29 Baalah,(ME) Iyim, Ezem,(MF) 30 Eltolad,(MG) Kesil, Hormah,(MH) 31 Ziklag,(MI) Madmannah,(MJ) Sansannah, 32 Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain(MK) and Rimmon(ML)—a total of twenty-nine towns and their villages.
33 In the western foothills:
Eshtaol,(MM) Zorah,(MN) Ashnah,(MO) 34 Zanoah,(MP) En Gannim,(MQ) Tappuah,(MR) Enam, 35 Jarmuth,(MS) Adullam,(MT) Sokoh,(MU) Azekah,(MV) 36 Shaaraim,(MW) Adithaim and Gederah(MX) (or Gederothaim)[j]—fourteen towns and their villages.
37 Zenan, Hadashah, Migdal Gad, 38 Dilean, Mizpah,(MY) Joktheel,(MZ) 39 Lachish,(NA) Bozkath,(NB) Eglon,(NC) 40 Kabbon, Lahmas, Kitlish, 41 Gederoth,(ND) Beth Dagon,(NE) Naamah and Makkedah(NF)—sixteen towns and their villages.
42 Libnah,(NG) Ether, Ashan,(NH) 43 Iphtah, Ashnah,(NI) Nezib, 44 Keilah,(NJ) Akzib(NK) and Mareshah(NL)—nine towns and their villages.
45 Ekron,(NM) with its surrounding settlements and villages; 46 west of Ekron, all that were in the vicinity of Ashdod,(NN) together with their villages; 47 Ashdod,(NO) its surrounding settlements and villages; and Gaza, its settlements and villages, as far as the Wadi of Egypt(NP) and the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea.(NQ)
48 In the hill country:
Shamir,(NR) Jattir,(NS) Sokoh,(NT) 49 Dannah, Kiriath Sannah (that is, Debir(NU)), 50 Anab,(NV) Eshtemoh,(NW) Anim, 51 Goshen,(NX) Holon(NY) and Giloh(NZ)—eleven towns and their villages.
52 Arab, Dumah,(OA) Eshan, 53 Janim, Beth Tappuah, Aphekah, 54 Humtah, Kiriath Arba(OB) (that is, Hebron) and Zior—nine towns and their villages.
55 Maon,(OC) Carmel,(OD) Ziph,(OE) Juttah,(OF) 56 Jezreel,(OG) Jokdeam, Zanoah,(OH) 57 Kain, Gibeah(OI) and Timnah(OJ)—ten towns and their villages.
58 Halhul, Beth Zur,(OK) Gedor,(OL) 59 Maarath, Beth Anoth and Eltekon—six towns and their villages.[k]
60 Kiriath Baal(OM) (that is, Kiriath Jearim(ON)) and Rabbah(OO)—two towns and their villages.

Beth Arabah,(OQ) Middin, Sekakah, 62 Nibshan, the City of Salt and En Gedi(OR)—six towns and their villages.
63 Judah could not(OS) dislodge the Jebusites(OT), who were living in Jerusalem;(OU) to this day the Jebusites live there with the people of Judah.(OV)
Allotment for Ephraim and Manasseh
16 The allotment for Joseph began at the Jordan, east of the springs of Jericho, and went up from there through the desert(OW) into the hill country of Bethel.(OX) 2 It went on from Bethel (that is, Luz(OY)),[l] crossed over to the territory of the Arkites(OZ) in Ataroth,(PA) 3 descended westward to the territory of the Japhletites as far as the region of Lower Beth Horon(PB) and on to Gezer,(PC) ending at the Mediterranean Sea.
4 So Manasseh and Ephraim, the descendants of Joseph, received their inheritance.(PD)
5 This was the territory of Ephraim, according to its clans:
The boundary of their inheritance went from Ataroth Addar(PE) in the east to Upper Beth Horon(PF) 6 and continued to the Mediterranean Sea. From Mikmethath(PG) on the north it curved eastward to Taanath Shiloh, passing by it to Janoah(PH) on the east. 7 Then it went down from Janoah(PI) to Ataroth(PJ) and Naarah, touched Jericho and came out at the Jordan. 8 From Tappuah(PK) the border went west to the Kanah Ravine(PL) and ended at the Mediterranean Sea. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the Ephraimites, according to its clans. 9 It also included all the towns and their villages that were set aside for the Ephraimites within the inheritance of the Manassites.(PM)
10 They did not dislodge the Canaanites living in Gezer; to this day the Canaanites live among the people of Ephraim but are required to do forced labor.(PN)
17 This was the allotment for the tribe of Manasseh(PO) as Joseph’s firstborn,(PP) that is, for Makir,(PQ) Manasseh’s firstborn. Makir was the ancestor of the Gileadites, who had received Gilead(PR) and Bashan(PS) because the Makirites were great soldiers. 2 So this allotment was for the rest of the people of Manasseh(PT)—the clans of Abiezer,(PU) Helek, Asriel,(PV) Shechem, Hepher(PW) and Shemida.(PX) These are the other male descendants of Manasseh son of Joseph by their clans.
3 Now Zelophehad son of Hepher,(PY) the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons but only daughters,(PZ) whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. 4 They went to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders and said, “The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our relatives.” So Joshua gave them an inheritance along with the brothers of their father, according to the Lord’s command.(QA) 5 Manasseh’s share consisted of ten tracts of land besides Gilead and Bashan east of the Jordan,(QB) 6 because the daughters of the tribe of Manasseh received an inheritance among the sons. The land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the descendants of Manasseh.
7 The territory of Manasseh extended from Asher(QC) to Mikmethath(QD) east of Shechem.(QE) The boundary ran southward from there to include the people living at En Tappuah. 8 (Manasseh had the land of Tappuah, but Tappuah(QF) itself, on the boundary of Manasseh, belonged to the Ephraimites.) 9 Then the boundary continued south to the Kanah Ravine.(QG) There were towns belonging to Ephraim lying among the towns of Manasseh, but the boundary of Manasseh was the northern side of the ravine and ended at the Mediterranean Sea. 10 On the south the land belonged to Ephraim, on the north to Manasseh. The territory of Manasseh reached the Mediterranean Sea and bordered Asher(QH) on the north and Issachar(QI) on the east.(QJ)
11 Within Issachar(QK) and Asher, Manasseh also had Beth Shan,(QL) Ibleam(QM) and the people of Dor,(QN) Endor,(QO) Taanach(QP) and Megiddo,(QQ) together with their surrounding settlements (the third in the list is Naphoth[m]).(QR)
12 Yet the Manassites were not able(QS) to occupy these towns, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that region. 13 However, when the Israelites grew stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labor but did not drive them out completely.(QT)
14 The people of Joseph said to Joshua, “Why have you given us only one allotment and one portion for an inheritance? We are a numerous people, and the Lord has blessed us abundantly.”(QU)
15 “If you are so numerous,” Joshua answered, “and if the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you, go up into the forest(QV) and clear land for yourselves there in the land of the Perizzites(QW) and Rephaites.(QX)”
16 The people of Joseph replied, “The hill country is not enough for us, and all the Canaanites who live in the plain have chariots fitted with iron,(QY) both those in Beth Shan(QZ) and its settlements and those in the Valley of Jezreel.”(RA)
17 But Joshua said to the tribes of Joseph—to Ephraim and Manasseh—“You are numerous and very powerful. You will have not only one allotment(RB) 18 but the forested hill country(RC) as well. Clear it, and its farthest limits will be yours; though the Canaanites have chariots fitted with iron(RD) and though they are strong, you can drive them out.”
Division of the Rest of the Land
18 The whole assembly of the Israelites gathered at Shiloh(RE) and set up the tent of meeting(RF) there. The country was brought under their control, 2 but there were still seven Israelite tribes who had not yet received their inheritance.
3 So Joshua said to the Israelites: “How long will you wait before you begin to take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has given you? 4 Appoint three men from each tribe. I will send them out to make a survey of the land and to write a description of it,(RG) according to the inheritance of each.(RH) Then they will return to me. 5 You are to divide the land into seven parts. Judah is to remain in its territory on the south(RI) and the tribes of Joseph in their territory on the north.(RJ) 6 After you have written descriptions of the seven parts of the land, bring them here to me and I will cast lots(RK) for you in the presence of the Lord our God. 7 The Levites, however, do not get a portion among you, because the priestly service of the Lord is their inheritance.(RL) And Gad, Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh have already received their inheritance on the east side of the Jordan. Moses the servant of the Lord gave it to them.(RM)”
8 As the men started on their way to map out the land, Joshua instructed them, “Go and make a survey of the land and write a description of it.(RN) Then return to me, and I will cast lots for you here at Shiloh(RO) in the presence of the Lord.” 9 So the men left and went through the land. They wrote its description on a scroll, town by town, in seven parts, and returned to Joshua in the camp at Shiloh. 10 Joshua then cast lots(RP) for them in Shiloh in the presence(RQ) of the Lord, and there he distributed the land to the Israelites according to their tribal divisions.(RR)
Allotment for Benjamin
11 The first lot came up for the tribe of Benjamin according to its clans. Their allotted territory lay between the tribes of Judah and Joseph:
12 On the north side their boundary began at the Jordan, passed the northern slope of Jericho and headed west into the hill country, coming out at the wilderness(RS) of Beth Aven.(RT) 13 From there it crossed to the south slope of Luz(RU) (that is, Bethel(RV)) and went down to Ataroth Addar(RW) on the hill south of Lower Beth Horon.
14 From the hill facing Beth Horon(RX) on the south the boundary turned south along the western side and came out at Kiriath Baal (that is, Kiriath Jearim),(RY) a town of the people of Judah. This was the western side.
15 The southern side began at the outskirts of Kiriath Jearim on the west, and the boundary came out at the spring of the waters of Nephtoah.(RZ) 16 The boundary went down to the foot of the hill facing the Valley of Ben Hinnom, north of the Valley of Rephaim.(SA) It continued down the Hinnom Valley(SB) along the southern slope of the Jebusite city and so to En Rogel.(SC) 17 It then curved north, went to En Shemesh, continued to Geliloth,(SD) which faces the Pass of Adummim,(SE) and ran down to the Stone of Bohan(SF) son of Reuben. 18 It continued to the northern slope of Beth Arabah[n](SG) and on down into the Arabah.(SH) 19 It then went to the northern slope of Beth Hoglah(SI) and came out at the northern bay of the Dead Sea,(SJ) at the mouth of the Jordan in the south. This was the southern boundary.
20 The Jordan formed the boundary on the eastern side.
These were the boundaries that marked out the inheritance of the clans of Benjamin on all sides.(SK)
21 The tribe of Benjamin, according to its clans, had the following towns:
Jericho, Beth Hoglah,(SL) Emek Keziz,
