John 9:28-10:6

New International Version

²⁸ Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!^{(A) 29} We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”^(B)

³⁰ The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. ³¹ We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.^{(C) 32} Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. ³³ If this man were not from God,^(D) he could do nothing.”

³⁴ To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth;^(E) how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.^(F)

Spiritual Blindness

³⁵ Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe^(G) in the Son of Man?”^(H)

³⁶ “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”^(I)

³⁷ Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”^(J)

³⁸ Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.^(K)

³⁹ Jesus said,^[a] “For judgment^(L) I have come into this world,^(M) so that the blind will see^(N) and those who see will become blind.”^(O)

⁴⁰ Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”^(P)

⁴¹ Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.^(Q)

The Good Shepherd and His Sheep

10 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.^{(R) 2} The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.^{(S) 3} The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice.^(T) He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.^{(U) 4} When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.^{(V) 5} But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” ⁶ Jesus used this figure of speech,^(W) but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.^(X)
