³⁰ He must become greater; I must become less.”^[a]

³¹ The one who comes from above^(A) is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth.^(B) The one who comes from heaven is above all. ³² He testifies to what he has seen and heard,^(C) but no one accepts his testimony.^{(D) 33} Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. ³⁴ For the one whom God has sent^(E) speaks the words of God, for God^[b] gives the Spirit^(F) without limit. ³⁵ The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.^{(G) 36} Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life,^(H) but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.

³⁷ On the last and greatest day of the festival,^(A) Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.^{(B) 38} Whoever believes^(C) in me, as Scripture has said,^(D) rivers of living water^(E) will flow from within them.”^{[a](F) 39} By this he meant the Spirit,^(G) whom those who believed in him were later to receive.^(H) Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.^(I)
