12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, (A)“I am the light of the world. He who (B)follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

35 Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer (A)the light is with you. (B)Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; (C)he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become (D)sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and (E)was hidden from them.

Who Has Believed Our Report?

37 But although He had done so many (F)signs before them, they did not believe in Him, 38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke:

(G)“Lord, who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

39 Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:

40 “He(H) has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts,
(I)Lest they should see with their eyes,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.”

41 (J)These things Isaiah said [a]when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.

Walk in the Light

42 Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but (K)because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; 43 (L)for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

44 Then Jesus cried out and said, (M)“He who believes in Me, (N)believes not in Me (O)but in Him who sent Me. 45 And (P)he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46 (Q)I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.

35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light(A) just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light,(B) before darkness overtakes you.(C) Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. 36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.”(D) When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.(E)

Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews

37 Even after Jesus had performed so many signs(F) in their presence, they still would not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:

“Lord, who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”[a](G)

39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:

40 “He has blinded their eyes
    and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
    nor understand with their hearts,
    nor turn—and I would heal them.”[b](H)

41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory(I) and spoke about him.(J)

42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.(K) But because of the Pharisees(L) they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;(M) 43 for they loved human praise(N) more than praise from God.(O)

44 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.(P) 45 The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.(Q) 46 I have come into the world as a light,(R) so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
