42 Therefore because of the Jewish day of (A)preparation, since the tomb was (B)nearby, they laid Jesus there.

The Empty Tomb

20 (C)Now on the first day of the week (D)Mary Magdalene *came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and *saw (E)the stone already removed from the tomb. So she *ran and *came to Simon Peter and to the other (F)disciple whom Jesus loved, and *said to them, “(G)They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we do not know where they have put Him.” (H)So Peter and the other disciple left, and they were going to the tomb. The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead, faster than Peter, and came to the tomb first; and he (I)stooped to look in, and *saw the (J)linen wrappings lying there; however he did not go in. So Simon Peter also *came, following him, and he entered the tomb; and he *looked at the linen wrappings lying there, and (K)the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the (L)linen wrappings but folded up in a place by itself. So the other disciple who (M)had first come to the tomb also entered then, and he saw and believed. For (N)they did not yet understand the Scripture, (O)that He must rise from the dead. 10 So the disciples went away again (P)to their own homes.

11 (Q)But Mary was standing outside the tomb, weeping; so as she wept, she (R)stooped to look into the tomb; 12 and she *saw (S)two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. 13 And they *said to her, “(T)Woman, why are you weeping?” She *said to them, “Because (U)they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they put Him.” 14 When she had said this, she turned around and *(V)saw Jesus standing there, and yet she (W)did not know that it was Jesus.

42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation(A) and since the tomb was nearby,(B) they laid Jesus there.

The Empty Tomb(C)

20 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene(D) went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.(E) So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved,(F) and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”(G)

So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.(H) Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in(I) at the strips of linen(J) lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head.(K) The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first,(L) also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture(M) that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)(N) 10 Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb(O) 12 and saw two angels in white,(P) seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”(Q)

“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”(R) 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,(S) but she did not realize that it was Jesus.(T)

42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

20 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.

Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.

So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.

And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.

Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,

And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.

Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.

For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.

10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.

11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,

12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.

14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
