37 And again another Scripture says, “(A)They will look at Him whom they pierced.”

38 Now (B)after these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a (C)secret one for (D)fear of the [a]Jews, requested of Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. 39 (E)Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, (F)bringing a [b]mixture of (G)myrrh and aloes, about a [c](H)hundred litras weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and (I)bound it in (J)linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden was a (K)new tomb (L)in which no one had yet been laid. 42 Therefore because of the Jewish day of (M)preparation, since the tomb was (N)nearby, they laid Jesus there.

The Empty Tomb

20 (O)Now on the first day of the week (P)Mary Magdalene *came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and *saw (Q)the stone already removed from the tomb. So she *ran and *came to Simon Peter and to the other (R)disciple whom Jesus loved, and *said to them, “(S)They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we do not know where they have put Him.”

The Burial of Jesus(B)

38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders.(C) With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus,(D) the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.[b] 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.(E) This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.(F) 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation(G) and since the tomb was nearby,(H) they laid Jesus there.

The Empty Tomb(I)

20 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene(J) went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.(K) So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved,(L) and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”(M)
