Job’s Life Seems Futile

[a]Is a person not (A)forced to labor on earth,
And are his days not like the days of (B)a hired worker?
As a slave pants for the shade,
And as a hired worker who eagerly waits for his wages,
So I am allotted worthless months,
And (C)nights of trouble are apportioned to me.
When I (D)lie down, I say,
‘When shall I arise?’
But the night continues,
And I am continually tossing until dawn.
My (E)flesh is clothed with maggots and a crust of dirt,
My skin hardens and [b]oozes.
My days are (F)swifter than a weaver’s shuttle,
And they come to an end (G)without hope.

“Remember that my life (H)is a mere breath;
My eye will (I)not see goodness again.
The (J)eye of him who sees me will no longer look at me;
Your eyes will be on me, but (K)I will not exist.
When a (L)cloud vanishes, it is gone;
In the same way (M)one who goes down to [c](N)Sheol does not come up.
10 He will not return to his house again,
Nor will (O)his place know about him anymore.

11 “Therefore (P)I will not restrain my mouth;
I will speak in the anguish of my spirit,
I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
12 Am I the sea, or (Q)the sea monster,
That You set a guard over me?
13 If I say, ‘(R)My couch will comfort me,
My bed will [d]ease my complaint,’
14 Then You frighten me with dreams,
And terrify me by visions,
15 So that my soul would choose suffocation,
Death rather than my [e]pains.
16 I [f](S)waste away; I will not live forever.
Leave me alone, (T)for my days are only a breath.
17 (U)What is man that You exalt him,
And that You [g]are concerned about him,
18 That (V)You examine him every morning
And put him to the test every moment?
19 [h](W)Will You never turn Your gaze away from me,
Nor leave me alone until I swallow my spittle?
20 (X)Have I sinned? What have I done to You,
(Y)Watcher of mankind?
Why have You made me Your target,
So that I am a burden to myself?
21 Why then (Z)do You not forgive my wrongdoing
And take away my [i]guilt?
For now I will (AA)lie down in the dust;
And You will search for me, (AB)but I will no longer exist.”

Bildad Says God Rewards the Good

Then Bildad the Shuhite responded,

“How long will you say these things,
And the (AC)words of your mouth be a mighty wind?
Does (AD)God pervert justice?
Or does [j]the Almighty pervert what is right?
(AE)If your sons sinned against Him,
Then He turned them over to the [k]power of their wrongdoing.
If you will (AF)search for God
And implore the compassion of [l]the Almighty,
If you are pure and upright,
Surely now (AG)He will stir Himself for you
And restore your righteous [m](AH)estate.
Though your beginning was insignificant,
Yet your (AI)end will increase greatly.

“Please (AJ)inquire of past generations,
And consider the things searched out by their fathers.
For we are only of yesterday and know nothing,
Because (AK)our days on earth are as a shadow.
10 Will they not teach you and tell you,
And bring forth words from their minds?

11 “Can papyrus grow tall without a marsh?
Can the rushes grow without water?
12 While it is still green and not cut down,
Yet it withers before any other [n]plant.
13 So are the paths of (AL)all who forget God;
And the (AM)hope of the godless will perish,
14 His confidence is fragile,
And his trust is a (AN)spider’s [o]web.
15 He depends on his (AO)house, but it does not stand;
He holds on to it, but it does not endure.
16 He (AP)flourishes before the sun,
And his (AQ)shoots spread out over his garden.
17 His roots wrap around a rock pile,
He [p]grasps a house of stones.
18 If he is [q]removed from (AR)his place,
Then it will deny him, saying, ‘(AS)I never saw you.’
19 Behold, (AT)this is the joy of His way;
And out of the dust others will spring.
20 Behold, (AU)God will not reject a person of integrity,
Nor (AV)will He [r]help evildoers.
21 He will yet fill (AW)your mouth with laughter,
And your lips with joyful shouting.
22 Those who hate you will be (AX)clothed with shame,
And the (AY)tent of the wicked will no longer exist.”

Job Says There Is No Arbitrator between God and Mankind

Then Job responded,

“In truth I know that this is so;
But how can a (AZ)person be in the right with God?
If one wished to (BA)dispute with Him,
He could not answer Him once in a thousand times.
(BB)Wise in heart and (BC)mighty in strength,
Who has [s](BD)defied Him [t]without harm?
(BE)It is God who removes the mountains, and they do not know how,
When He overturns them in His anger.
It is He who (BF)shakes the earth from its place,
And its (BG)pillars tremble;
Who commands the (BH)sun [u]not to shine,
And puts a seal on the stars;
Who alone (BI)stretches out the heavens,
And [v](BJ)tramples down the waves of the sea;
Who makes the (BK)Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades,
And the [w](BL)constellations of the south.
10 It is He who (BM)does great things, [x]the unfathomable,
And wondrous works without number.
11 If He were to pass by me, (BN)I would not see Him;
Were He to move past me, I would not perceive Him.
12 If He were to snatch away, who could (BO)restrain Him?
Who could say to Him, ‘(BP)What are You doing?’

13 “God will not turn back His anger;
Beneath Him the helpers of [y](BQ)Rahab cower.
14 How then can (BR)I [z]answer Him,
And choose my words [aa]before Him?
15 For (BS)though I were right, I could not [ab]answer;
I would have to (BT)implore the mercy of my Judge.
16 If I called and He answered me,
I could not believe that He was listening to my voice.
17 For He (BU)bruises me with a storm
And multiplies my wounds without cause.
18 He will (BV)not allow me to get my breath,
But He saturates me with (BW)bitterness.
19 If it is a matter of power, (BX)behold, He is the strong one!
And if it is a matter of justice, who can summon [ac]Him?
20 (BY)Though I am righteous, my mouth will (BZ)condemn me;
Though I am guiltless, He will declare me guilty.
21 I am (CA)guiltless;
I do not take notice of myself;
I (CB)reject my life.
22 It is all one; therefore I say,
‘He (CC)destroys the guiltless and the wicked.’
23 If the whip kills suddenly,
He (CD)mocks the despair of the innocent.
24 The earth (CE)is handed over to the wicked;
He (CF)covers the faces of its judges.
If it is not He, then who is it?

25 “Now (CG)my days are swifter than a runner;
They flee away, (CH)they see no good.
26 They slip by like (CI)reed boats,
Like an (CJ)eagle that swoops on [ad]its prey.
27 Though I say, ‘I will forget (CK)my complaint,
I will [ae]put my face in order and be cheerful,’
28 I am (CL)afraid of all my pains,
I know that (CM)You will not acquit me.
29 I am (CN)guilty,
Why then should I struggle in vain?
30 If I (CO)washed myself with snow,
And cleansed (CP)my hands with lye,
31 Then You would plunge me into the pit,
And my own clothes would loathe me.
32 For (CQ)He is not a man, as I am, that (CR)I may answer Him—
That we may go to [af]court together!
33 There is no (CS)arbitrator between us,
Who can place his hand upon us both.
34 Let Him (CT)remove His rod from me,
And let not the dread of Him terrify me.
35 Then I (CU)would speak and not fear Him;
But I am not like that in myself.

Job Despairs of God’s Dealings

10 [ag](CV)I am disgusted with my own life;
I will express (CW)my complaint freely;
I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.
I will say to God, ‘(CX)Do not condemn me;
Let me know why You contend with me.
Is it [ah]right for You indeed to (CY)oppress,
To reject (CZ)the work of Your hands,
And [ai]to look favorably on (DA)the plan of the wicked?
Do You have eyes of flesh?
Or do You (DB)see as mankind sees?
Are Your days like the days of a mortal,
Or (DC)Your years like a man’s year,
That (DD)You should search for my guilt
And carefully seek my sin?
According to Your knowledge (DE)I am indeed not guilty,
Yet there is (DF)no one to save me from Your hand.

(DG)Your hands fashioned and made me [aj]altogether,
(DH)Yet would You destroy me?
Remember that You have made me as (DI)clay;
Yet would You (DJ)turn me into dust again?
10 Did You not pour me out like milk,
And curdle me like cheese,
11 Clothe me with skin and flesh,
And intertwine me with bones and tendons?
12 You have (DK)granted me life and [ak]goodness;
And Your care has guarded my spirit.
13 Yet You have concealed (DL)these things in Your heart;
I know that this is within You:
14 If I have sinned, You will (DM)take note of me,
And (DN)will not acquit me of my guilt.
15 If (DO)I am wicked, woe to me!
But if (DP)I am righteous, I dare not lift up my head.
I am full of shame, and [al]conscious of my misery.
16 And should my head be high, (DQ)You would hunt me like a lion;
And You would show Your (DR)power against me again.
17 You renew (DS)Your witnesses against me
And increase Your anger toward me;
[am](DT)Hardship after hardship is with me.

18 (DU)Why then did You bring me out of the womb?
If only I had died and no eye had seen me!
19 I should have been as though I had not been,
Brought from womb to tomb.’
20 Would He not leave (DV)my few days alone?
[an](DW)Withdraw from me so that I may have a little cheerfulness
21 Before I go—(DX)and I shall not return—
(DY)To the land of darkness and (DZ)deep shadow,
22 The land of utter gloom like darkness itself,
Of deep shadow without order,
And it shines like darkness.”

Zophar Rebukes Job

11 Then Zophar the Naamathite responded,

“Shall a multitude of words go unanswered,
And a (EA)talkative man be acquitted?
Shall your boasts silence people?
And will you (EB)scoff, and no one rebuke?
For (EC)you have said, ‘My teaching is pure,
And (ED)I am innocent in your eyes.’
But if only God would speak,
And open His lips against you,
And show you the secrets of wisdom!
For sound wisdom [ao](EE)has two sides.
Know then that God [ap]forgets part of (EF)your guilt.

(EG)Can you discover the depths of God?
Can you discover the limits of the Almighty?
They are as (EH)high as [aq]the heavens; what can you do?
Deeper than [ar](EI)Sheol; what can you know?
Its measurement is longer than the earth
And broader than the sea.
10 If He passes by or apprehends people,
Or calls an assembly, (EJ)who can restrain Him?
11 For (EK)He knows false people,
And He (EL)sees injustice [as]without investigating.
12 [at](EM)An idiot will become intelligent
When a (EN)wild donkey is born a human.

13 (EO)If you would (EP)direct your heart rightly
And (EQ)spread out your hands to Him,
14 If wrongdoing is in your hand, (ER)put it far away,
And do not let malice dwell in your tents;
15 Then, indeed, you could (ES)lift up your face without moral blemish,
And you would be firmly established and (ET)not fear.
16 For you would (EU)forget your trouble;
Like (EV)waters that have passed by, you would remember it.
17 Your [au]life would [av]be (EW)brighter than noonday;
Darkness would be like the morning.
18 Then you would trust, because there is hope;
And you would look around and rest securely.
19 You would (EX)lie down and none would disturb you,
And many would [aw](EY)flatter you.
20 But the (EZ)eyes of the wicked will fail,
And [ax]there will (FA)be no escape for them;
And their (FB)hope is [ay](FC)to breathe their last.”

Job Chides His Accusers

12 Then Job responded,

“Truly then (FD)you are the people,
And with you wisdom will die!
But (FE)I have intelligence as well as you;
I am not inferior to you.
And [az]who does not know such things as these?
I am a (FF)joke to [ba]my friends,
The one who called on God and He answered him;
The just and (FG)blameless man is a joke.
[bb]He who is at ease holds disaster in contempt,
As prepared for those whose feet slip.
The (FH)tents of the destroyers prosper,
And those who provoke God (FI)are secure,
[bc]Whom God brings (FJ)into their power.

“But just ask the animals, and have them teach you;
And the birds of the sky, and have them tell you.
Or speak to the earth, and have it teach you;
And have the fish of the sea tell you.
Who among all these does not know
That (FK)the hand of the Lord has done this,
10 (FL)In whose hand is the life of every living thing,
And (FM)the breath of all mankind?
11 Does (FN)the ear not put words to the test,
As the palate [bd]tastes its food?
12 Wisdom is with the (FO)aged,
And with [be]long life comes understanding.

Job Speaks of the Power of God

13 (FP)Wisdom and (FQ)might are with Him;
Advice and (FR)understanding belong to Him.
14 Behold, He (FS)tears down, and it cannot be rebuilt;
He [bf](FT)imprisons a person, and [bg]there is no release.
15 Behold, He (FU)restrains the waters, and they dry up;
And He (FV)sends them out, and they [bh]inundate the earth.
16 Strength and sound wisdom are with Him.
One who (FW)goes astray and one who leads astray belong to Him.
17 He makes (FX)advisers walk [bi]barefoot
And makes fools of (FY)judges.
18 He (FZ)undoes the binding of kings,
And ties a loincloth around their waist.
19 He makes priests walk [bj]barefoot,
And overthrows (GA)the secure ones.
20 He deprives the trusted ones of speech,
And (GB)takes away the discernment of the elders.
21 He (GC)pours contempt on nobles,
And (GD)loosens the belt of the strong.
22 He (GE)reveals mysteries from the darkness,
And brings the deep darkness into light.
23 He (GF)makes the nations great, then destroys them;
He [bk]enlarges the nations, then leads them away.
24 He (GG)deprives the leaders of the earth’s people of [bl]intelligence
And makes them wander in a pathless wasteland.
25 They (GH)grope in darkness with no light,
And He makes them (GI)stagger like a drunken person.

Job Says His Friends’ Proverbs Are Ashes

13 (GJ)Behold, my eye has seen all this,
My ear has heard and understood it.
(GK)What you know I also know;
I am not inferior to you.

“But (GL)I would speak to [bm]the Almighty,
And I desire to (GM)argue with God.
But you (GN)smear me with lies;
You are all (GO)worthless physicians.
Oh that you would (GP)be completely silent,
And that it would become your wisdom!
Please hear my argument,
And give your attention to the contentions of my lips.
Will you (GQ)speak what is unjust for God,
And speak what is deceitful for Him?
Will you (GR)show partiality for Him?
Will you contend for God?
Will it go well when He examines you?
Or (GS)will you deceive Him as one deceives a man?
10 He will certainly punish you
If you secretly (GT)show partiality.
11 Will (GU)His [bn]majesty not terrify you,
And the dread of Him fall upon you?
12 Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes,
Your defenses are defenses of clay.

Job Is Sure He Will Be Vindicated

13 (GV)Be silent before me so that I may speak;
Then let come upon me what may.
14 Why should I take my flesh in my teeth,
And (GW)put my life in my [bo]hands?
15 (GX)Though He slay me,
I will [bp]hope in Him.
Nevertheless I (GY)will argue my ways [bq]before Him.
16 This also will be my (GZ)salvation,
For (HA)a godless person cannot come before His presence.
17 Listen carefully to my speech,
And let my declaration fill your ears.
18 Behold now, I have (HB)prepared my case;
I know that (HC)I will be vindicated.
19 (HD)Who could contend with me?
For then I would be silent and (HE)die.

20 “Only two things I ask that You do not do to me,
Then I will not hide from Your face:
21 (HF)Remove Your [br]hand from me,
And may the dread of You not terrify me.
22 Then call and (HG)I will answer;
Or let me speak, then reply to me.
23 (HH)How many are my guilty deeds and sins?
Make known to me my wrongdoing and my sin.
24 Why do You (HI)hide Your face
And consider me (HJ)Your enemy?
25 Will You scare away a (HK)scattered leaf?
Or will You pursue the dry (HL)chaff?
26 For You write (HM)bitter things against me
And (HN)make me inherit the guilty deeds of my youth.
27 You (HO)put my feet in the stocks
And watch all my paths;
You [bs]set a limit for the soles of my feet,
28 While [bt]I am decaying like a (HP)rotten thing,
Like a garment that is moth-eaten.

Job Speaks of the Finality of Death

14 (HQ)Man, who is born of woman,
Is [bu]short-lived and (HR)full of turmoil.
(HS)Like a flower he comes out and withers.
He also flees like (HT)a shadow and does not remain.
You also (HU)open Your eyes on him
And (HV)bring [bv]him into judgment with Yourself.
(HW)Who can make the clean out of the unclean?
No one!
Since his days are determined,
The (HX)number of his months is with You;
And You have [bw]set his limits so that he cannot pass.
(HY)Look away from him so that he may [bx]rest,
Until he [by]fulfills his day like a hired worker.

“For there is hope for a tree,
When it is cut down, that it will sprout again,
And its shoots will not [bz]fail.
Though its roots grow old in the ground,
And its stump dies in the dry soil,
At the scent of water it will flourish
And produce sprigs like a plant.
10 But (HZ)a man dies and lies prostrate.
A person (IA)passes away, and where is he?
11 As (IB)water [ca]evaporates from the sea,
And a river becomes parched and dried up,
12 So (IC)a man lies down and does not rise.
Until the heavens no longer exist,
[cb]He will not awake nor be woken from [cc]his sleep.

13 “Oh that You would hide me in [cd]Sheol,
That You would conceal me (ID)until Your wrath returns to You,
That You would set a limit for me and remember me!
14 If a man dies, will he live again?
All the days of my struggle I will wait
Until my relief comes.
15 You will call, and I will answer You;
You will long for (IE)the work of Your hands.
16 For now You (IF)number my steps,
You do not (IG)observe my sin.
17 My wrongdoing is (IH)sealed up in a bag,
And You cover over my [ce]guilt.

18 “But the falling mountain [cf]crumbles away,
And the rock moves from its place;
19 Water wears away stones,
Its torrents wash away the dust of the earth;
So You (II)destroy a man’s hope.
20 You forever overpower him and he (IJ)departs;
You change his appearance and send him away.
21 His sons achieve honor, but (IK)he does not know it;
Or they become insignificant, and he does not perceive it.
22 However, his [cg]body pains him,
And his soul mourns for himself.”

Eliphaz Says Job Presumes Much

15 Then Eliphaz the Temanite responded,

“Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge,
(IL)And fill [ch]himself with the east wind?
Should he argue with useless talk,
Or with words which do not benefit?
Indeed, you do away with [ci]reverence,
And hinder meditation before God.
For (IM)your wrongdoing teaches your mouth,
And you choose the language of (IN)the cunning.
Your (IO)own mouth condemns you, and not I;
And your own lips testify against you.

“Were you the first person to be born,
Or (IP)were you brought forth before the hills?
Do you hear the (IQ)secret discussion of God,
And limit wisdom to yourself?
(IR)What do you know that we do not know?
What do you understand that [cj]we do not?
10 Both the (IS)gray-haired and the aged are among us,
Older than your father.
11 Are (IT)the consolations of God too little for you,
Or the (IU)word spoken gently to you?
12 Why does your (IV)heart take you away?
And why do your eyes wink,
13 That you can turn your spirit against God
And produce such words from your mouth?
14 What is man, that (IW)he would be pure,
Or (IX)he who is born of a woman, that he would be righteous?
15 Behold, He has no trust in His (IY)holy ones,
And the (IZ)heavens are not pure in His sight;
16 How much less one who is (JA)detestable and corrupt:
A person who (JB)drinks [ck]malice like water!

What Eliphaz Has Seen of Life

17 “I will tell you, listen to me;
And what I have seen I will also declare;
18 What wise people have told,
And have not concealed from (JC)their fathers,
19 To whom alone the land was given,
And no stranger passed among them.
20 The wicked person writhes (JD)in pain all his days,
And the [cl]years (JE)reserved for the ruthless are numbered.
21 [cm]Sounds of (JF)terror are in his ears;
(JG)While he is at peace the destroyer comes upon him.
22 He does not believe that he will (JH)return from darkness,
And he is destined for (JI)the sword.
23 He wanders about for food, saying, ‘Where is it?’
He knows that a day of (JJ)darkness is [cn]at hand.
24 Distress and anguish terrify him,
They overpower him like a king ready for the attack,
25 Because he has reached out with his hand against God,
And is (JK)arrogant toward [co]the Almighty.
26 He rushes [cp]headlong at Him
With his [cq]massive shield.
27 For he has (JL)covered his face with his fat,
And [cr]put fat on his waist.
28 He has (JM)lived in desolate cities,
In houses no one would inhabit,
Which are destined to become [cs]ruins.
29 He (JN)will not become rich, nor will his wealth endure;
And his property will not stretch out on the earth.
30 He will (JO)not [ct]escape from darkness;
The (JP)flame will dry up his shoot,
And he will go away by (JQ)the breath of His mouth.
31 Let him not (JR)trust in emptiness, deceiving himself;
For his [cu]reward will be emptiness.
32 It will be accomplished (JS)before his time,
And his palm (JT)branch will not be green.
33 He will drop off his unripe grape like the vine,
And will (JU)cast off his flower like the olive tree.
34 For the company of (JV)the godless is barren,
And fire consumes (JW)the tents of [cv]the corrupt.
35 They (JX)conceive [cw]harm and give birth to wrongdoing,
And their [cx]mind prepares deception.”

Job Says Friends Are Miserable Comforters

16 Then Job responded,

“I have heard many things like these;
[cy](JY)Miserable comforters are you all!
Is there no end to (JZ)windy words?
Or what provokes you that you answer?
I too could speak like you,
If only [cz]I were in your place.
I could compose words against you
And (KA)shake my head at you.
Or I could strengthen you with my mouth,
And the condolence of my lips could lessen your pain.

Job Says God Shattered Him

“If I speak, (KB)my pain is not lessened,
And if I refrain, what pain leaves me?
But now He has (KC)exhausted me;
You have laid (KD)waste all my group of loved ones.
And you have shriveled me up,
[da](KE)It has become a witness;
And my (KF)infirmity rises up against me,
It testifies to my face.
His anger has (KG)torn me and [db]hunted me down,
He has (KH)gnashed at me with His teeth;
My (KI)enemy [dc]glares at me.
10 They have (KJ)gaped at me with their mouths,
They have [dd](KK)slapped me on the cheek with contempt;
They have (KL)massed themselves against me.
11 God hands me over to criminals,
And tosses me into the hands of the wicked.
12 I was at ease, but (KM)He shattered me,
And He has grasped me by my neck and shaken me to pieces;
He has also set me up as His (KN)target.
13 His (KO)arrows surround me.
He splits my kidneys open without mercy;
He pours out (KP)my bile on the ground.
14 He (KQ)breaks through me with breach after breach;
He (KR)runs at me like a warrior.
15 I have sewed (KS)sackcloth over my skin,
And (KT)thrust my horn in the dust.
16 My face is flushed from (KU)weeping,
(KV)And deep darkness is on my eyelids,
17 Although there is no (KW)violence in my hands,
And (KX)my prayer is pure.

18 “Earth, do not cover my blood,
And may there be no resting place for my cry.
19 Even now, behold, (KY)my witness is in heaven,
And my [de]advocate is (KZ)on high.
20 My friends are my scoffers;
(LA)My eye weeps to God,
21 That one might plead for a man with God
As a son of man with his neighbor!
22 For when a few years are past,
I shall go the way (LB)of no return.

Job Says He Has Become a Proverb

17 “My spirit is broken, my days are extinguished,
The [df](LC)grave is ready for me.
(LD)Mockers are certainly with me,
And my eye [dg]gazes on their provocation.

“Make a pledge (LE)for me with Yourself;
Who is there that will [dh]be my guarantor?
For You have [di](LF)kept their hearts away from understanding;
Therefore You will not exalt them.
He who (LG)informs against friends for a share of the spoils,
The (LH)eyes of his children also will perish.

“But He has made me a (LI)proverb among the people,
And I am [dj]one at whom people (LJ)spit.
My eye has also become (LK)inexpressive because of grief,
And all my (LL)body parts are like a shadow.
The upright will be appalled at this,
And the (LM)innocent will stir himself up against the godless.
Nevertheless (LN)the righteous will hold to his way,
And (LO)the one who has clean hands will grow stronger and stronger.
10 But come again all of [dk]you now,
For I (LP)do not find a wise man among you.
11 My (LQ)days are past, my plans are torn apart,
The wishes of my heart.
12 They make night into day, saying,
‘The light is near,’ in the presence of darkness.
13 If I hope for [dl](LR)Sheol as my home,
I [dm]make my bed in the darkness;
14 If I call to the (LS)grave, ‘You are my father’;
To the (LT)maggot, ‘my mother and my sister’;
15 Where then is (LU)my hope?
And who looks at my hope?
16 [dn]Will it go down with me to Sheol?
Shall we together (LV)go down into the dust?”

Bildad Speaks of the Wicked

18 Then Bildad the Shuhite responded,

“How long will you hunt for words?
Show understanding, and then we can talk.
Why are we (LW)regarded as animals,
As stupid in your eyes?
[do]You who tear yourself in your anger—
Should the earth be abandoned for your sake,
Or the rock moved from its place?

“Indeed, the (LX)light of the wicked goes out,
And the spark from his fire does not shine.
The light in his tent is (LY)darkened,
And his lamp goes out above him.
His [dp]vigorous stride is shortened,
And his (LZ)own plan brings him down.
For he is (MA)thrown into the net by his own feet,
And he steps on the webbing.
A snare seizes him by the heel,
And a trap snaps shut on him.
10 A noose for him is hidden in the ground,
And a trap for him on the pathway.
11 All around (MB)sudden terrors frighten him,
And (MC)harass him at every step.
12 His strength is (MD)famished,
And disaster is ready at his side.
13 [dq]It devours parts of his skin,
The firstborn of death (ME)devours his [dr]limbs.
14 He is (MF)torn from [ds]the security of his tent,
And [dt]they march him before the king of (MG)terrors.
15 [du]Nothing of his dwells in his tent;
(MH)Brimstone is scattered on his home.
16 His (MI)roots are dried below,
And his (MJ)branch withers above.
17 (MK)The memory of him perishes from the earth,
And he has no name abroad.
18 [dv]He is driven from light (ML)into darkness,
And (MM)chased from the inhabited world.
19 He has no (MN)offspring or descendants among his people,
Nor any survivor where he resided.
20 Those in the west are appalled at (MO)his [dw]fate,
And those in the east are seized with horror.
21 Certainly these are the (MP)dwellings of the wicked,
And this is the place of him who does not know God.”

Like a slave longing for the evening shadows,(D)
    or a hired laborer waiting to be paid,(E)
so I have been allotted months of futility,
    and nights of misery have been assigned to me.(F)
When I lie down I think, ‘How long before I get up?’(G)
    The night drags on, and I toss and turn until dawn.(H)
My body is clothed with worms(I) and scabs,
    my skin is broken and festering.(J)

“My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle,(K)
    and they come to an end without hope.(L)
Remember, O God, that my life is but a breath;(M)
    my eyes will never see happiness again.(N)
The eye that now sees me will see me no longer;
    you will look for me, but I will be no more.(O)
As a cloud vanishes(P) and is gone,
    so one who goes down to the grave(Q) does not return.(R)
10 He will never come to his house again;

Bildad

Then Bildad the Shuhite(AW) replied:

“How long will you say such things?(AX)
    Your words are a blustering wind.(AY)
Does God pervert justice?(AZ)
    Does the Almighty pervert what is right?(BA)
When your children sinned against him,
    he gave them over to the penalty of their sin.(BB)

if you are pure and upright,

Your beginnings will seem humble,

Job

Then Job replied:

“Indeed, I know that this is true.
    But how can mere mortals prove their innocence before God?(CJ)
Though they wished to dispute with him,(CK)
    they could not answer him one time out of a thousand.(CL)
His wisdom(CM) is profound, his power is vast.(CN)
    Who has resisted(CO) him and come out unscathed?(CP)
He moves mountains(CQ) without their knowing it
    and overturns them in his anger.(CR)
He shakes the earth(CS) from its place
    and makes its pillars tremble.(CT)
He speaks to the sun and it does not shine;(CU)
    he seals off the light of the stars.(CV)
He alone stretches out the heavens(CW)
    and treads on the waves of the sea.(CX)
He is the Maker(CY) of the Bear[d] and Orion,
    the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.(CZ)
10 He performs wonders(DA) that cannot be fathomed,
    miracles that cannot be counted.(DB)
11 When he passes me, I cannot see him;
    when he goes by, I cannot perceive him.(DC)
12 If he snatches away, who can stop him?(DD)
    Who can say to him, ‘What are you doing?’(DE)
13 God does not restrain his anger;(DF)
    even the cohorts of Rahab(DG) cowered at his feet.

14 “How then can I dispute with him?
    How can I find words to argue with him?(DH)
15 Though I were innocent, I could not answer him;(DI)
    I could only plead(DJ) with my Judge(DK) for mercy.(DL)
16 Even if I summoned him and he responded,
    I do not believe he would give me a hearing.(DM)
17 He would crush me(DN) with a storm(DO)

18 He would not let me catch my breath

19 If it is a matter of strength, he is mighty!(DS)
    And if it is a matter of justice, who can challenge him[e]?(DT)
20 Even if I were innocent, my mouth would condemn me;
    if I were blameless, it would pronounce me guilty.(DU)

21 “Although I am blameless,(DV)
    I have no concern for myself;(DW)
    I despise my own life.(DX)
22 It is all the same; that is why I say,
    ‘He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’(DY)
23 When a scourge(DZ) brings sudden death,
    he mocks the despair of the innocent.(EA)
24 When a land falls into the hands of the wicked,(EB)
    he blindfolds its judges.(EC)
    If it is not he, then who is it?(ED)

25 “My days are swifter than a runner;(EE)
    they fly away without a glimpse of joy.(EF)
26 They skim past(EG) like boats of papyrus,(EH)
    like eagles swooping down on their prey.(EI)
27 If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint,(EJ)
    I will change my expression, and smile,’
28 I still dread(EK) all my sufferings,
    for I know you will not hold me innocent.(EL)
29 Since I am already found guilty,
    why should I struggle in vain?(EM)
30 Even if I washed myself with soap(EN)
    and my hands(EO) with cleansing powder,(EP)
31 you would plunge me into a slime pit(EQ)
    so that even my clothes would detest me.(ER)

32 “He is not a mere mortal(ES) like me that I might answer him,(ET)
    that we might confront each other in court.(EU)
33 If only there were someone to mediate between us,(EV)
    someone to bring us together,(EW)
34 someone to remove God’s rod from me,(EX)
    so that his terror would frighten me no more.(EY)
35 Then I would speak up without fear of him,(EZ)
    but as it now stands with me, I cannot.(FA)

10 “I loathe my very life;(FB)
    therefore I will give free rein to my complaint
    and speak out in the bitterness of my soul.(FC)
I say to God:(FD) Do not declare me guilty,
    but tell me what charges(FE) you have against me.(FF)
Does it please you to oppress me,(FG)
    to spurn the work of your hands,(FH)
    while you smile on the plans of the wicked?(FI)
Do you have eyes of flesh?
    Do you see as a mortal sees?(FJ)
Are your days like those of a mortal
    or your years like those of a strong man,(FK)
that you must search out my faults
    and probe after my sin(FL)
though you know that I am not guilty(FM)
    and that no one can rescue me from your hand?(FN)

“Your hands shaped(FO) me and made me.
    Will you now turn and destroy me?(FP)
Remember that you molded me like clay.(FQ)
    Will you now turn me to dust again?(FR)
10 Did you not pour me out like milk
    and curdle me like cheese,
11 clothe me with skin and flesh
    and knit me together(FS) with bones and sinews?
12 You gave me life(FT) and showed me kindness,(FU)
    and in your providence(FV) watched over(FW) my spirit.

13 “But this is what you concealed in your heart,
    and I know that this was in your mind:(FX)
14 If I sinned, you would be watching me(FY)
    and would not let my offense go unpunished.(FZ)
15 If I am guilty(GA)—woe to me!(GB)
    Even if I am innocent, I cannot lift my head,(GC)
for I am full of shame
    and drowned in[f] my affliction.(GD)
16 If I hold my head high, you stalk me like a lion(GE)
    and again display your awesome power against me.(GF)
17 You bring new witnesses against me(GG)
    and increase your anger toward me;(GH)
    your forces come against me wave upon wave.(GI)

18 “Why then did you bring me out of the womb?(GJ)
    I wish I had died before any eye saw me.(GK)
19 If only I had never come into being,
    or had been carried straight from the womb to the grave!(GL)
20 Are not my few days(GM) almost over?(GN)
    Turn away from me(GO) so I can have a moment’s joy(GP)
21 before I go to the place of no return,(GQ)
    to the land of gloom and utter darkness,(GR)
22 to the land of deepest night,
    of utter darkness(GS) and disorder,
    where even the light is like darkness.”(GT)

Zophar

11 Then Zophar the Naamathite(GU) replied:

“Are all these words to go unanswered?(GV)
    Is this talker to be vindicated?(GW)
Will your idle talk(GX) reduce others to silence?
    Will no one rebuke you when you mock?(GY)
You say to God, ‘My beliefs are flawless(GZ)
    and I am pure(HA) in your sight.’
Oh, how I wish that God would speak,(HB)
    that he would open his lips against you
and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom,(HC)
    for true wisdom has two sides.
    Know this: God has even forgotten some of your sin.(HD)

“Can you fathom(HE) the mysteries of God?
    Can you probe the limits of the Almighty?
They are higher(HF) than the heavens(HG) above—what can you do?
    They are deeper than the depths below(HH)—what can you know?(HI)
Their measure(HJ) is longer than the earth
    and wider than the sea.(HK)

10 “If he comes along and confines you in prison
    and convenes a court, who can oppose him?(HL)
11 Surely he recognizes deceivers;
    and when he sees evil, does he not take note?(HM)
12 But the witless can no more become wise
    than a wild donkey’s colt(HN) can be born human.[g](HO)

13 “Yet if you devote your heart(HP) to him
    and stretch out your hands(HQ) to him,(HR)
14 if you put away(HS) the sin that is in your hand

15 then, free of fault, you will lift up your face;(HV)
    you will stand firm(HW) and without fear.(HX)
16 You will surely forget your trouble,(HY)
    recalling it only as waters gone by.(HZ)
17 Life will be brighter than noonday,(IA)

18 You will be secure, because there is hope;
    you will look about you and take your rest(IC) in safety.(ID)
19 You will lie down, with no one to make you afraid,(IE)

20 But the eyes of the wicked will fail,(IG)
    and escape will elude them;(IH)
    their hope will become a dying gasp.”(II)

Job

12 Then Job replied:

“Doubtless you are the only people who matter,
    and wisdom will die with you!(IJ)
But I have a mind as well as you;
    I am not inferior to you.
    Who does not know all these things?(IK)

“I have become a laughingstock(IL) to my friends,(IM)

21 He pours contempt on nobles(JV)

22 He reveals the deep things of darkness(JX)

23 He makes nations great, and destroys them;(KA)

    Could you deceive him as you might deceive a mortal?(KU)
10 He would surely call you to account
    if you secretly showed partiality.(KV)
11 Would not his splendor(KW) terrify you?
    Would not the dread of him fall on you?(KX)
12 Your maxims are proverbs of ashes;
    your defenses are defenses of clay.(KY)

13 “Keep silent(KZ) and let me speak;(LA)
    then let come to me what may.(LB)
14 Why do I put myself in jeopardy
    and take my life in my hands?(LC)
15 Though he slay me, yet will I hope(LD) in him;(LE)
    I will surely[j] defend my ways to his face.(LF)
16 Indeed, this will turn out for my deliverance,(LG)
    for no godless(LH) person would dare come before him!(LI)
17 Listen carefully to what I say;(LJ)
    let my words ring in your ears.
18 Now that I have prepared my case,(LK)
    I know I will be vindicated.(LL)
19 Can anyone bring charges against me?(LM)
    If so, I will be silent(LN) and die.(LO)

20 “Only grant me these two things, God,
    and then I will not hide from you:
21 Withdraw your hand(LP) far from me,
    and stop frightening me with your terrors.(LQ)
22 Then summon me and I will answer,(LR)
    or let me speak, and you reply to me.(LS)
23 How many wrongs and sins have I committed?(LT)
    Show me my offense and my sin.(LU)
24 Why do you hide your face(LV)
    and consider me your enemy?(LW)
25 Will you torment(LX) a windblown leaf?(LY)
    Will you chase(LZ) after dry chaff?(MA)
26 For you write down bitter things against me
    and make me reap the sins of my youth.(MB)
27 You fasten my feet in shackles;(MC)
    you keep close watch on all my paths(MD)
    by putting marks on the soles of my feet.

28 “So man wastes away like something rotten,
    like a garment(ME) eaten by moths.(MF)

14 “Mortals, born of woman,(MG)
    are of few days(MH) and full of trouble.(MI)
They spring up like flowers(MJ) and wither away;(MK)
    like fleeting shadows,(ML) they do not endure.(MM)
Do you fix your eye on them?(MN)
    Will you bring them[k] before you for judgment?(MO)
Who can bring what is pure(MP) from the impure?(MQ)
    No one!(MR)
A person’s days are determined;(MS)
    you have decreed the number of his months(MT)
    and have set limits he cannot exceed.(MU)
So look away from him and let him alone,(MV)
    till he has put in his time like a hired laborer.(MW)

“At least there is hope for a tree:(MX)
    If it is cut down, it will sprout again,
    and its new shoots(MY) will not fail.(MZ)
Its roots may grow old in the ground
    and its stump(NA) die in the soil,
yet at the scent of water(NB) it will bud
    and put forth shoots like a plant.(NC)
10 But a man dies and is laid low;(ND)
    he breathes his last and is no more.(NE)
11 As the water of a lake dries up
    or a riverbed becomes parched and dry,(NF)
12 so he lies down and does not rise;(NG)
    till the heavens are no more,(NH) people will not awake
    or be roused from their sleep.(NI)

13 “If only you would hide me in the grave(NJ)
    and conceal me till your anger has passed!(NK)
If only you would set me a time
    and then remember(NL) me!(NM)
14 If someone dies, will they live again?
    All the days of my hard service(NN)
    I will wait for my renewal[l](NO) to come.
15 You will call and I will answer you;(NP)
    you will long for the creature your hands have made.(NQ)
16 Surely then you will count my steps(NR)
    but not keep track of my sin.(NS)
17 My offenses will be sealed(NT) up in a bag;(NU)
    you will cover over my sin.(NV)

18 “But as a mountain erodes and crumbles(NW)
    and as a rock is moved from its place,(NX)
19 as water wears away stones
    and torrents(NY) wash away the soil,(NZ)
    so you destroy a person’s hope.(OA)
20 You overpower them once for all, and they are gone;(OB)
    you change their countenance and send them away.(OC)
21 If their children are honored, they do not know it;
    if their offspring are brought low, they do not see it.(OD)
22 They feel but the pain of their own bodies(OE)
    and mourn only for themselves.(OF)

Eliphaz

15 Then Eliphaz the Temanite(OG) replied:

“Would a wise person answer with empty notions
    or fill their belly with the hot east wind?(OH)
Would they argue with useless words,
    with speeches that have no value?(OI)
But you even undermine piety
    and hinder devotion to God.(OJ)
Your sin(OK) prompts your mouth;(OL)
    you adopt the tongue of the crafty.(OM)
Your own mouth condemns you, not mine;
    your own lips testify against you.(ON)

“Are you the first man ever born?(OO)
    Were you brought forth before the hills?(OP)
Do you listen in on God’s council?(OQ)
    Do you have a monopoly on wisdom?(OR)
What do you know that we do not know?
    What insights do you have that we do not have?(OS)
10 The gray-haired and the aged(OT) are on our side,
    men even older than your father.(OU)
11 Are God’s consolations(OV) not enough for you,
    words(OW) spoken gently to you?(OX)
12 Why has your heart(OY) carried you away,
    and why do your eyes flash,
13 so that you vent your rage(OZ) against God
    and pour out such words(PA) from your mouth?(PB)

14 “What are mortals, that they could be pure,
    or those born of woman,(PC) that they could be righteous?(PD)
15 If God places no trust in his holy ones,(PE)
    if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes,(PF)
16 how much less mortals, who are vile and corrupt,(PG)
    who drink up evil(PH) like water!(PI)

17 “Listen to me and I will explain to you;
    let me tell you what I have seen,(PJ)
18 what the wise have declared,
    hiding nothing received from their ancestors(PK)
19 (to whom alone the land(PL) was given
    when no foreigners moved among them):
20 All his days the wicked man suffers torment,(PM)
    the ruthless man through all the years stored up for him.(PN)
21 Terrifying sounds fill his ears;(PO)
    when all seems well, marauders attack him.(PP)
22 He despairs of escaping the realm of darkness;(PQ)
    he is marked for the sword.(PR)
23 He wanders about(PS) for food like a vulture;(PT)
    he knows the day of darkness(PU) is at hand.(PV)
24 Distress and anguish(PW) fill him with terror;(PX)
    troubles overwhelm him, like a king(PY) poised to attack,
25 because he shakes his fist(PZ) at God
    and vaunts himself against the Almighty,(QA)
26 defiantly charging against him
    with a thick, strong shield.(QB)

27 “Though his face is covered with fat
    and his waist bulges with flesh,(QC)
28 he will inhabit ruined towns
    and houses where no one lives,(QD)
    houses crumbling to rubble.(QE)
29 He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure,(QF)
    nor will his possessions spread over the land.(QG)
30 He will not escape the darkness;(QH)
    a flame(QI) will wither his shoots,(QJ)
    and the breath of God’s mouth(QK) will carry him away.(QL)
31 Let him not deceive(QM) himself by trusting what is worthless,(QN)
    for he will get nothing in return.(QO)
32 Before his time(QP) he will wither,(QQ)
    and his branches will not flourish.(QR)
33 He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes,(QS)
    like an olive tree shedding its blossoms.(QT)
34 For the company of the godless(QU) will be barren,
    and fire will consume(QV) the tents of those who love bribes.(QW)
35 They conceive trouble(QX) and give birth to evil;(QY)
    their womb fashions deceit.”

Job

16 Then Job replied:

“I have heard many things like these;
    you are miserable comforters,(QZ) all of you!(RA)
Will your long-winded speeches never end?(RB)
    What ails you that you keep on arguing?(RC)
I also could speak like you,
    if you were in my place;
I could make fine speeches against you
    and shake my head(RD) at you.
But my mouth would encourage you;
    comfort(RE) from my lips would bring you relief.(RF)

“Yet if I speak, my pain is not relieved;
    and if I refrain, it does not go away.(RG)
Surely, God, you have worn me out;(RH)
    you have devastated my entire household.(RI)
You have shriveled me up—and it has become a witness;
    my gauntness(RJ) rises up and testifies against me.(RK)
God assails me and tears(RL) me in his anger(RM)
    and gnashes his teeth at me;(RN)
    my opponent fastens on me his piercing eyes.(RO)
10 People open their mouths(RP) to jeer at me;(RQ)
    they strike my cheek(RR) in scorn
    and unite together against me.(RS)
11 God has turned me over to the ungodly
    and thrown me into the clutches of the wicked.(RT)
12 All was well with me, but he shattered me;
    he seized me by the neck and crushed me.(RU)
He has made me his target;(RV)
13     his archers surround me.(RW)
Without pity, he pierces(RX) my kidneys
    and spills my gall on the ground.
14 Again and again(RY) he bursts upon me;
    he rushes at me like a warrior.(RZ)

15 “I have sewed sackcloth(SA) over my skin
    and buried my brow in the dust.(SB)
16 My face is red with weeping,(SC)
    dark shadows ring my eyes;(SD)
17 yet my hands have been free of violence(SE)
    and my prayer is pure.(SF)

18 “Earth, do not cover my blood;(SG)
    may my cry(SH) never be laid to rest!(SI)
19 Even now my witness(SJ) is in heaven;(SK)
    my advocate is on high.(SL)
20 My intercessor(SM) is my friend[m](SN)
    as my eyes pour out(SO) tears(SP) to God;
