25 And Bildad the Shuhite answereth and saith: --

The rule and fear [are] with Him, Making peace in His high places.

Is their [any] number to His troops? And on whom ariseth not His light?

And what? is man righteous with God? And what? is he pure -- born of a woman?

Lo -- unto the moon, and it shineth not, And stars have not been pure in His eyes.

How much less man -- a grub, And the son of man -- a worm!

26 And Job answereth and saith: --

What -- thou hast helped the powerless, Saved an arm not strong!

What -- thou hast given counsel to the unwise, And wise plans in abundance made known.

With whom hast thou declared words? And whose breath came forth from thee?

The Rephaim are formed, Beneath the waters, also their inhabitants.

Naked [is] Sheol over-against Him, And there is no covering to destruction.

Stretching out the north over desolation, Hanging the earth upon nothing,

Binding up the waters in His thick clouds, And the cloud is not rent under them.

Taking hold of the face of the throne, Spreading over it His cloud.

10 A limit He hath placed on the waters, Unto the boundary of light with darkness.

11 Pillars of the heavens do tremble, And they wonder because of His rebuke.

12 By His power He hath quieted the sea, And by His understanding smitten the proud.

13 By His Spirit the heavens He beautified, Formed hath His hand the fleeing serpent.

14 Lo, these [are] the borders of His way, And how little a matter is heard of Him, And the thunder of His might Who doth understand?

27 And Job addeth to lift up his simile, and saith: --

God liveth! He turned aside my judgment, And the Mighty -- He made my soul bitter.

For all the while my breath [is] in me, And the spirit of God in my nostrils.

My lips do not speak perverseness, And my tongue doth not utter deceit.

Pollution to me -- if I justify you, Till I expire I turn not aside mine integrity from me.

On my righteousness I have laid hold, And I do not let it go, My heart doth not reproach me while I live.

As the wicked is my enemy, And my withstander as the perverse.

For what [is] the hope of the profane, When He doth cut off? When God doth cast off his soul?

His cry doth God hear, When distress cometh on him?

10 On the Mighty doth he delight himself? Call God at all times?

11 I shew you by the hand of God, That which [is] with the Mighty I hide not.

12 Lo, ye -- all of you -- have seen, And why [is] this -- ye are altogether vain?

13 This [is] the portion of wicked man with God, And the inheritance of terrible ones From the Mighty they receive.

14 If his sons multiply -- for them [is] a sword. And his offspring [are] not satisfied [with] bread.

15 His remnant in death are buried, And his widows do not weep.

16 If he heap up as dust silver, And as clay prepare clothing,

17 He prepareth -- and the righteous putteth [it] on, And the silver the innocent doth apportion.

18 He hath built as a moth his house, And as a booth a watchman hath made.

19 Rich he lieth down, and he is not gathered, His eyes he hath opened, and he is not.

20 Overtake him as waters do terrors, By night stolen him away hath a whirlwind.

21 Take him up doth an east wind, and he goeth, And it frighteneth him from his place,

22 And it casteth at him, and doth not spare, From its hand he diligently fleeth.

23 It clappeth at him its hands, And it hisseth at him from his place.

Bildad

25 Then Bildad the Shuhite(A) replied:

“Dominion and awe belong to God;(B)
    he establishes order in the heights of heaven.(C)
Can his forces be numbered?
    On whom does his light not rise?(D)
How then can a mortal be righteous before God?
    How can one born of woman be pure?(E)
If even the moon(F) is not bright
    and the stars are not pure in his eyes,(G)
how much less a mortal, who is but a maggot—
    a human being,(H) who is only a worm!”(I)

Job

26 Then Job replied:

“How you have helped the powerless!(J)
    How you have saved the arm that is feeble!(K)
What advice you have offered to one without wisdom!
    And what great insight(L) you have displayed!
Who has helped you utter these words?
    And whose spirit spoke from your mouth?(M)

“The dead are in deep anguish,(N)
    those beneath the waters and all that live in them.
The realm of the dead(O) is naked before God;
    Destruction[a](P) lies uncovered.(Q)
He spreads out the northern skies(R) over empty space;
    he suspends the earth over nothing.(S)
He wraps up the waters(T) in his clouds,(U)
    yet the clouds do not burst under their weight.
He covers the face of the full moon,
    spreading his clouds(V) over it.
10 He marks out the horizon on the face of the waters(W)
    for a boundary between light and darkness.(X)
11 The pillars of the heavens quake,(Y)
    aghast at his rebuke.
12 By his power he churned up the sea;(Z)
    by his wisdom(AA) he cut Rahab(AB) to pieces.
13 By his breath the skies(AC) became fair;
    his hand pierced the gliding serpent.(AD)
14 And these are but the outer fringe of his works;
    how faint the whisper(AE) we hear of him!(AF)
    Who then can understand the thunder of his power?”(AG)

Job’s Final Word to His Friends

27 And Job continued his discourse:(AH)

“As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice,(AI)
    the Almighty,(AJ) who has made my life bitter,(AK)
as long as I have life within me,
    the breath of God(AL) in my nostrils,
my lips will not say anything wicked,
    and my tongue will not utter lies.(AM)
I will never admit you are in the right;
    till I die, I will not deny my integrity.(AN)
I will maintain my innocence(AO) and never let go of it;
    my conscience(AP) will not reproach me as long as I live.(AQ)

“May my enemy be like the wicked,(AR)
    my adversary(AS) like the unjust!
For what hope have the godless(AT) when they are cut off,
    when God takes away their life?(AU)
Does God listen to their cry
    when distress comes upon them?(AV)
10 Will they find delight in the Almighty?(AW)
    Will they call on God at all times?

11 “I will teach you about the power of God;
    the ways(AX) of the Almighty I will not conceal.(AY)
12 You have all seen this yourselves.
    Why then this meaningless talk?

13 “Here is the fate God allots to the wicked,
    the heritage a ruthless man receives from the Almighty:(AZ)
14 However many his children,(BA) their fate is the sword;(BB)
    his offspring will never have enough to eat.(BC)
15 The plague will bury those who survive him,
    and their widows will not weep for them.(BD)
16 Though he heaps up silver like dust(BE)
    and clothes like piles of clay,(BF)
17 what he lays up(BG) the righteous will wear,(BH)
    and the innocent will divide his silver.(BI)
18 The house(BJ) he builds is like a moth’s cocoon,(BK)
    like a hut(BL) made by a watchman.
19 He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more;(BM)
    when he opens his eyes, all is gone.(BN)
20 Terrors(BO) overtake him like a flood;(BP)
    a tempest snatches him away in the night.(BQ)
21 The east wind(BR) carries him off, and he is gone;(BS)
    it sweeps him out of his place.(BT)
22 It hurls itself against him without mercy(BU)
    as he flees headlong(BV) from its power.(BW)
23 It claps its hands(BX) in derision
    and hisses him out of his place.”(BY)
