The Suffering Servant

53 (A)Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For He grew up before Him like a (B)tender [a]shoot,
And like a root out of dry ground;
He has (C)no stately form or majesty
That we would look at Him,
Nor an appearance that we would take pleasure in Him.
He was (D)despised and abandoned by men,
A man of [b]great pain and (E)familiar with sickness;
And like one from whom people hide their faces,
He was (F)despised, and we had no (G)regard for Him.

However, it was our sicknesses that He Himself (H)bore,
And our pains that He carried;
Yet we ourselves assumed that He had been afflicted,
Struck down by (I)God, and humiliated.
But He was [c]pierced for (J)our offenses,
He was crushed for (K)our wrongdoings;
The (L)punishment for our [d]well-being was laid upon Him,
And by (M)His wounds we are healed.
All of us, like sheep, have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the Lord has caused the wrongdoing of us all
To [e]fall on Him.

He was oppressed and afflicted,
Yet He did not (N)open His mouth;
(O)Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.
By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
And as for His generation, who considered
That He was cut off from the land of the [f]living
(P)For the wrongdoing of my people, to whom the blow was due?
And His grave was assigned with wicked men,
Yet He was with a (Q)rich man in His death,
(R)Because He had (S)done no violence,
Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.

10 But the Lord desired
To (T)crush Him, [g](U)causing Him grief;
If He renders [h]Himself as a guilt (V)offering,
He will see (W)His [i]offspring,
He will prolong His days,
And the [j]good (X)pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.
11 As a result of the [k]anguish of His soul,
He will [l](Y)see it and be satisfied;
By His (Z)knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will justify the many,
For He will (AA)bear their wrongdoings.
12 Therefore, I will allot Him a (AB)portion with the great,
And He will divide the plunder with the strong,
Because He poured out His [m](AC)life unto death,
And was (AD)counted with wrongdoers;
Yet He Himself (AE)bore the sin of many,
And interceded for the wrongdoers.

The Fertility of Zion

54 (AF)Shout for joy, infertile one, you who have not given birth to any child;
Break forth into joyful shouting and cry aloud, you who have not been in labor;
For the sons of the (AG)desolate one will be (AH)more numerous
Than the sons of the married woman,” says the Lord.
(AI)Enlarge the place of your tent;
[n]Stretch out the curtains of your dwellings, do not spare them;
Lengthen your (AJ)ropes
And strengthen your (AK)pegs.
For you will (AL)spread out to the right and to the left.
And your [o]descendants will (AM)possess nations
And will (AN)resettle the desolate cities.

“Fear not, for you will (AO)not be put to shame;
And do not feel humiliated, for you will not be disgraced;
But you will forget the (AP)shame of your youth,
And no longer remember the (AQ)disgrace of your widowhood.
For your (AR)husband is your Maker,
Whose name is the Lord of armies;
And your (AS)Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel,
Who is called the (AT)God of all the earth.
For the Lord has called you,
Like a wife (AU)forsaken and grieved in spirit,
Even like a wife of one’s youth when she is rejected,”
Says your God.
[p]For a (AV)brief moment I abandoned you,
But with great compassion I will (AW)gather you.
In an [q](AX)outburst of anger
I hid My face from you for a moment,
But with everlasting (AY)favor I will (AZ)have compassion on you,”
Says the Lord your (BA)Redeemer.

“For [r]this is like the days of Noah to Me,
When I swore that the waters of Noah
Would (BB)not [s]flood the earth again;
So I have sworn that I will (BC)not be angry with you
Nor rebuke you.
10 For the (BD)mountains may be removed and the hills may shake,
But My [t]favor will not be removed from you,
Nor will My (BE)covenant of peace be shaken,”
Says (BF)the Lord who has compassion on you.

11 (BG)Afflicted one, storm-tossed, and (BH)not comforted,
Behold, I will set your stones in antimony,
And I will (BI)lay your foundations with [u](BJ)sapphires.
12 Moreover, I will make your battlements of [v]rubies,
And your gates of [w]crystal,
And your entire [x]wall of precious stones.
13 (BK)All your sons will be [y]taught by the Lord;
And the well-being of your sons will be (BL)great.
14 In (BM)righteousness you will be established;
You will be far from (BN)oppression, for you will (BO)not fear;
And from (BP)terror, for it will not come near you.
15 If anyone fiercely attacks you, it will not be from Me.
(BQ)Whoever attacks you will fall because of you.
16 Behold, I Myself have created the smith who blows on the fire of coals
And produces a weapon for its work;
And I have created the destroyer to inflict ruin.
17 (BR)No weapon that is formed against you will succeed;
And you will condemn (BS)every tongue that [z]accuses you in judgment.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,
And their (BT)vindication is from Me,” declares the Lord.

The Free Offer of Mercy

55 [aa]You there! Everyone who (BU)thirsts, come to the waters;
And you who have (BV)no [ab]money come, buy and eat.
Come, buy (BW)wine and milk
(BX)Without money and without cost.
Why do you [ac]spend money for what is (BY)not bread,
And your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and (BZ)eat what is good,
And (CA)delight yourself in abundance.
(CB)Incline your ear and come to Me.
Listen, that [ad]you may (CC)live;
And I will make (CD)an everlasting covenant with you,
According to the (CE)faithful mercies [ae]shown to David.
Behold, I have made (CF)him a witness to the peoples,
A (CG)leader and commander for the peoples.
Behold, you will call a (CH)nation you do not know,
And a nation which does not know you will (CI)run to you,
Because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel;
For He has (CJ)glorified you.”

(CK)Seek the Lord while He may be found;
(CL)Call upon Him while He is near.
(CM)Let the wicked abandon his way,
And the unrighteous person his (CN)thoughts;
And let him (CO)return to the Lord,
And He will have (CP)compassion on him,
And to our God,
For He will (CQ)abundantly pardon.
“For My thoughts are not (CR)your thoughts,
Nor are (CS)your ways My ways,” declares the Lord.
“For (CT)as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways
And My thoughts than your thoughts.
10 For as the (CU)rain and the snow come down from heaven,
And do not return there without watering the earth
And making it produce and sprout,
And providing (CV)seed to the sower and bread to the eater;
11 So will My (CW)word be which goes out of My mouth;
It will (CX)not return to Me empty,
Without (CY)accomplishing what I desire,
And without succeeding in the purpose for which I sent it.
12 For you will go out with (CZ)joy
And be led in (DA)peace;
The (DB)mountains and the hills will break into shouts of joy before you,
And all the (DC)trees of the field will clap their hands.
13 Instead of the (DD)thorn bush, the (DE)juniper will come up,
And instead of the (DF)stinging nettle, the myrtle will come up;
And [af]it will be a [ag](DG)memorial to the Lord,
An everlasting (DH)sign which (DI)will not be eliminated.”

Rewards for Obedience to God

56 This is what the Lord says:
(DJ)Guard justice and do righteousness,
For My (DK)salvation is about to come
And My righteousness to be revealed.
(DL)Blessed is a man who does this,
And a son of man who (DM)takes hold of it;
Who (DN)keeps from profaning the Sabbath,
And keeps his hand from doing any evil.”
Let not the (DO)foreigner who has joined himself to the Lord say,
“The Lord will certainly separate me from His people.”
Nor let the (DP)eunuch say, “Behold, I am a dry tree.”
For this is what the Lord says:
“To the eunuchs who (DQ)keep My Sabbaths,
And choose what pleases Me,
And (DR)hold firmly to My covenant,
To them I will give in My (DS)house and within My (DT)walls a memorial,
And a name better than that of sons and daughters;
I will give [ah]them an everlasting (DU)name which (DV)will not be eliminated.

“Also the (DW)foreigners who join themselves to the Lord,
To attend to His service and to love the name of the Lord,
To be His servants, every one who (DX)keeps the Sabbath so as not to profane it,
And holds firmly to My covenant;
Even (DY)those I will bring to My (DZ)holy mountain,
And (EA)make them joyful in My house of prayer.
Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be acceptable on (EB)My altar;
For (EC)My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples.”
The Lord [ai]God, who (ED)gathers the dispersed of Israel, declares,
“I will yet gather (EE)others to [aj]them, to those already gathered.”

All you [ak](EF)wild animals,
All you animals in the forest,
Come to eat.
10 His (EG)watchmen are (EH)blind,
All of them know nothing.
All of them are mute dogs unable to bark,
Dreamers lying down, who love to slumber;
11 And the dogs are [al](EI)greedy, they [am]are never satisfied.
And they are shepherds who have (EJ)no understanding;
They have all (EK)turned to their own way,
Each one to his unjust gain, [an]without exception.
12 “Come,” they say, “[ao]let’s get (EL)wine, and let’s drink heavily of intoxicating drink;
And (EM)tomorrow will be like today, only more so.”

Evil Leaders Rebuked

57 The righteous person perishes, and no one (EN)takes it to heart;
And devout people are taken away, while no one understands.
For the righteous person is taken away from (EO)evil,
He enters into peace;
They rest in their [ap]beds,
Each one who (EP)walked in his upright way.
“But come here, you sons of a (EQ)sorceress,
(ER)Offspring of an adulterer and [aq]a (ES)prostitute!
Of whom do you make fun?
Against whom do you open wide your mouth
And stick out your tongue?
Are you not children of (ET)rebellion,
Offspring of deceit,
Who inflame yourselves among the (EU)oaks,
(EV)Under every luxuriant tree,
Who (EW)slaughter the children in the [ar]ravines,
Under the clefts of the rocks?
Among the [as](EX)smooth stones of the [at]ravine
Is your portion, [au]they are your lot;
Even to them you have (EY)poured out a drink offering,
You have made a grain offering.
Should I [av](EZ)relent of these things?
On a (FA)high and lofty mountain
You have (FB)made your bed.
You also went up there to offer sacrifice.
Behind the door and the doorpost
You have set up your sign;
Indeed, far removed from Me, you have (FC)uncovered yourself,
And have gone up and made your bed wide.
And you have made an agreement for yourself with them,
You have loved their bed,
You have looked at their [aw]manhood.
You have journeyed to the king with oil
And increased your perfumes;
You have (FD)sent your messengers a great distance
And made them go down to [ax]Sheol.
10 You were tired out by the length of your road,
Yet you did not say, ‘(FE)It is hopeless!’
You found [ay]renewed strength,
Therefore you did not [az]faint.

11 “Of (FF)whom were you worried and fearful
When you lied, and did (FG)not remember Me
[ba]Nor (FH)give Me a thought?
Was I not silent, even for a long time,
So you do not fear Me?
12 I will (FI)declare your righteousness and your (FJ)deeds,
And they will not benefit you.
13 When you cry out, (FK)let your collection of idols save you.
But the wind will carry them all up,
And a breath will take them away.
But the one who (FL)takes refuge in Me will (FM)inherit the land
And (FN)possess My holy mountain.”

14 And it will be said,
(FO)Build up, build up, prepare the way,
Remove every obstacle from the way of My people.”
15 For this is what the (FP)high and exalted One
Who [bb](FQ)lives forever, whose name is Holy, says:
“I (FR)dwell in a high and holy place,
And also with the (FS)contrite and lowly of spirit
In order to (FT)revive the spirit of the lowly
And to revive the heart of the contrite.
16 For I will (FU)not contend forever,
(FV)Nor will I always be angry;
For the spirit would grow faint before Me,
And the (FW)breath of those whom I have made.
17 Because of the wrongful act of his (FX)unjust gain I was angry and struck him;
I hid My face and was angry,
And he went on (FY)turning away, in the way of his heart.
18 I have seen his ways, but I will (FZ)heal him;
I will (GA)lead him and (GB)restore comfort to him and to his mourners,
19 Creating the [bc](GC)praise of the lips.
(GD)Peace, peace to him who is (GE)far away and to him who is near,”
Says the Lord, “and I will heal him.”
20 But the (GF)wicked are like the tossing sea,
For it cannot be quiet,
And its waters toss up refuse and mud.
21 (GG)There is no peace,” says (GH)my God, “for the wicked.”

Observances of Fasts

58 (GI)Cry loudly, do not hold back;
Raise your voice like a trumpet,
And declare to My people their (GJ)wrongdoing,
And to the house of Jacob their sins.
Yet they (GK)seek Me day by day and delight to know My ways,
As a nation that has done (GL)righteousness
And (GM)has not forsaken the ordinance of their God.
They ask Me for just decisions,
They delight (GN)in the nearness of God.
‘Why have we (GO)fasted and You do not see?
Why have we humbled ourselves and You do not [bd]notice?’
Behold, on the (GP)day of your fast you find your desire,
And oppress all your workers.
Behold, you fast for contention and (GQ)strife, and to strike with a wicked fist.
You do not fast like you have done today to (GR)make your voice heard on high!
Is it a fast like this that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself?
Is it for bowing [be]one’s head like a reed
And for spreading out (GS)sackcloth and ashes as a bed?
Will you call this a fast, even an (GT)acceptable day to the Lord?
Is this not the fast that I choose:
To (GU)release the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the ropes of the yoke,
And to (GV)let the oppressed go free,
And (GW)break every yoke?
Is it not to (GX)break your bread [bf]with the hungry
And (GY)bring the homeless poor into the house;
When you see the (GZ)naked, to cover him;
And not to (HA)hide yourself from your own flesh?
Then your (HB)light will break out like the dawn,
And your (HC)recovery will spring up quickly;
And your (HD)righteousness will go before you;
The glory of the (HE)Lord will be your rear guard.
Then you will (HF)call, and the Lord will answer;
You will cry for help, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you (HG)remove the yoke from your midst,
The [bg](HH)pointing of the finger and (HI)speaking wickedness,
10 And if you (HJ)offer yourself to the hungry
And satisfy the [bh]need of the afflicted,
Then your (HK)light will rise in darkness,
And your gloom will become like midday.
11 And the (HL)Lord will continually guide you,
And (HM)satisfy your [bi]desire in scorched places,
And (HN)give strength to your bones;
And you will be like a (HO)watered garden,
And like a (HP)spring of water whose waters do not [bj]fail.
12 Those from among you will (HQ)rebuild the ancient ruins;
You will (HR)raise up the age-old foundations;
And you will be called the repairer of the (HS)breach,
The restorer of the [bk]streets in which to dwell.

Keeping the Sabbath

13 “If, because of the Sabbath, you (HT)restrain your foot
From doing as you wish on My holy day,
And call the Sabbath a (HU)pleasure, and the holy day of the Lord honorable,
And honor it, desisting from your (HV)own ways,
From seeking your own pleasure
And (HW)speaking your own word,
14 Then you will take (HX)delight in the Lord,
And I will make you ride (HY)on the heights of the earth;
And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
For the (HZ)mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Separation from God

59 Behold, (IA)the Lords hand is not so short
That it cannot save;
(IB)Nor is His ear so dull
That it cannot hear.
But your (IC)wrongdoings have caused a separation between you and your God,
And your sins have hidden His [bl]face from you so that He does (ID)not hear.
For your (IE)hands are defiled with blood,
And your fingers with wrongdoing;
Your lips have spoken (IF)deceit,
Your tongue mutters wickedness.
(IG)No one sues righteously and (IH)no one pleads [bm]honestly.
They (II)trust in confusion and speak lies;
They (IJ)conceive trouble and give birth to disaster.
They hatch vipers’ eggs and (IK)weave the spider’s web;
The one who eats of their eggs dies,
And from what is crushed, a snake breaks out.
Their webs will not become clothing,
Nor will they (IL)cover themselves with their works;
Their (IM)works are works of wrongdoing,
And an (IN)act of violence is in their [bn]hands.
(IO)Their feet run to evil,
And they hurry to shed innocent blood;
(IP)Their thoughts are thoughts of wrongdoing,
Devastation and destruction are in their paths.
They do not know the (IQ)way of peace,
And there is (IR)no justice in their tracks;
They have made their paths crooked,
(IS)Whoever walks on [bo]them does not know peace.

A Confession of Wickedness

Therefore (IT)justice is far from us,
And righteousness does not reach us;
We (IU)hope for light, but there is darkness,
For brightness, but we walk in gloom.
10 We (IV)grope for the wall like people who are blind,
We grope like those who have no eyes.
We (IW)stumble at midday as in the twilight;
Among those who are healthy we are (IX)like the dead.
11 All of us growl like bears,
And (IY)moan sadly like doves;
We hope for (IZ)justice, but there is none;
For salvation, but it is far from us.
12 For our (JA)wrongful acts have multiplied before You,
And our (JB)sins have testified against us;
For our wrongful acts are with us,
And [bp]we know our wrongdoings:
13 [bq]Offending and (JC)denying the Lord,
And turning away from our God,
Speaking (JD)oppression and revolt,
Conceiving and (JE)uttering lying words from the heart.
14 (JF)Justice is turned back,
And (JG)righteousness stands far away;
For truth has stumbled in the street,
And uprightness cannot enter.
15 Truth is lacking,
And one who turns aside from evil (JH)makes himself a prey.
Now the Lord saw,
And it was [br]displeasing in His sight (JI)that there was no justice.
16 And He saw that there was (JJ)no one,
And was amazed that there was not one to intercede;
Then His (JK)own arm brought salvation to Him,
And His righteousness upheld Him.
17 He put on (JL)righteousness like a breastplate,
And a (JM)helmet of salvation on His head;
And He put on (JN)garments of vengeance for clothing
And wrapped Himself with (JO)zeal as a cloak.
18 (JP)According to their deeds, [bs]so will He repay:
Wrath to His adversaries, [bt]retribution to His enemies;
To the coastlands He will [bu]deal [bv]retribution.
19 So they will fear the name of the Lord from the (JQ)west
And His glory from the (JR)rising of the sun,
For He will (JS)come like a [bw]rushing stream
Which the wind of the Lord drives.
20 “A (JT)Redeemer will come to Zion,
And to those in Jacob who (JU)turn from wrongdoing,” declares the Lord.

21 “As for Me, this is My (JV)covenant with them,” says the Lord: “My (JW)Spirit who is upon you, and My (JX)words which I have put in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your [bx]offspring, nor from the mouth of your [by]offspring’s offspring,” says the Lord, “from now and forever.”

A Glorified Zion

60 (JY)Arise, shine; for your (JZ)light has come,
And the (KA)glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
For behold, (KB)darkness will cover the earth
And deep darkness the peoples;
But the Lord will rise upon you
And His (KC)glory will appear upon you.
(KD)Nations will come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.

(KE)Raise your eyes all around and see;
They all gather together, they (KF)come to you.
Your sons will come from afar,
And your (KG)daughters will be [bz]carried on the hip.
Then you will see and be (KH)radiant,
And your heart will [ca]thrill and rejoice;
Because the [cb](KI)abundance of the sea will be turned to you,
The (KJ)wealth of the nations will come to you.
A multitude of camels will cover you,
The young camels of Midian and (KK)Ephah;
All those from (KL)Sheba will come;
They will bring (KM)gold and frankincense,
And (KN)proclaim good news of the praises of the Lord.
All the flocks of (KO)Kedar will be gathered to you,
The rams of Nebaioth will serve you;
They will go up on My (KP)altar with acceptance,
And I will (KQ)glorify My glorious house.
(KR)Who are these who fly like a cloud
And like the doves to their windows?
Certainly the (KS)coastlands will wait for Me;
And the (KT)ships of Tarshish will come first,
To (KU)bring your sons from afar,
Their silver and their gold with them,
For the name of the Lord your God,
And for the Holy One of Israel because He has (KV)glorified you.

10 (KW)Foreigners will build up your walls,
And their (KX)kings will serve you;
For in My (KY)wrath I struck you,
And in My favor I have had compassion on you.
11 Your (KZ)gates will be open continually;
They will not be closed day or night,
So that people may (LA)bring you the wealth of the nations,
With (LB)their kings led in procession.
12 For the (LC)nation and the kingdom which will not serve you will perish,
And the nations will be utterly ruined.
13 The (LD)glory of Lebanon will come to you,
The (LE)juniper, the elm tree and the [cc]cedar together,
To beautify the place of My sanctuary;
And I will make the (LF)place of My feet glorious.
14 The (LG)sons of those who afflicted you will come bowing to you,
And all those who despised you will bow down at the soles of your feet;
And they will call you the (LH)city of the Lord,
The (LI)Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

15 “Whereas you have been (LJ)forsaken and (LK)hated
With no one passing through,
I will make you an (LL)object of pride forever,
A joy from generation to generation.
16 You will also (LM)suck the milk of nations,
And suck the breast of kings;
Then you will know that I, the Lord, am your (LN)Savior
And your (LO)Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
17 Instead of bronze I will bring gold,
And instead of iron I will bring silver,
And instead of wood, bronze,
And instead of stones, iron.
And I will make peace your administrators,
And righteousness your overseers.
18 (LP)Violence will not be heard again in your land,
Nor (LQ)devastation or destruction within your borders;
But you will call your (LR)walls salvation, and your (LS)gates praise.
19 No longer will you have the (LT)sun for light by day,
Nor will the moon give you light for brightness;
But you will have the (LU)Lord as an everlasting light,
And your (LV)God as your [cd]glory.
20 Your (LW)sun will no longer set,
Nor will your moon wane;
For you will have the Lord as an everlasting light,
And the days of your (LX)mourning will be over.
21 Then all your (LY)people will be righteous;
They will (LZ)possess the land forever,
The branch of [ce]My planting,
The (MA)work of My hands,
That I may be (MB)glorified.
22 The (MC)smallest one will become a thousand,
And the least one a mighty nation.
I, the Lord, will bring it about quickly in its time.”

Exaltation of the Afflicted

61 The (MD)Spirit of the Lord [cf]God is upon me,
Because the Lord anointed me
To (ME)bring good news to the (MF)humble;
He has sent me to (MG)bind up the brokenhearted,
To (MH)proclaim [cg]release to captives
And [ch]freedom to prisoners;
To (MI)proclaim the favorable year of the Lord
And the (MJ)day of vengeance of our God;
To (MK)comfort all who mourn,
To (ML)grant those who mourn in Zion,
Giving them a garland instead of ashes,
The (MM)oil of gladness instead of mourning,
The cloak of praise instead of a disheartened spirit.
So they will be called [ci](MN)oaks of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.

Then they will (MO)rebuild the ancient ruins,
They will raise up the former devastations;
And they will repair the ruined cities,
The desolations of many generations.
(MP)Strangers will stand and pasture your flocks,
And [cj]foreigners will be your farmers and your vinedressers.
But you will be called the (MQ)priests of the Lord;
You will be spoken of as (MR)ministers of our God.
You will eat the (MS)wealth of nations,
And you will boast in their [ck]riches.
Instead of your (MT)shame you will have a (MU)double portion,
And instead of humiliation they will shout for joy over their portion.
Therefore they will possess a double portion in their land,
(MV)Everlasting joy will be theirs.
For I, the Lord, (MW)love justice,
I hate robbery [cl]in the burnt offering;
And I will faithfully give them their reward,
And make an (MX)everlasting covenant with them.
Then their offspring will be known among the nations,
And their descendants in the midst of the peoples.
All who see them will recognize them
Because they are the (MY)offspring whom the Lord has blessed.

10 I will (MZ)rejoice greatly in the Lord,
My soul will be joyful in (NA)my God;
For He has (NB)clothed me with garments of salvation,
He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness,
As a groom puts on a turban,
And (NC)as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the (ND)earth produces its sprouts,
And as a garden causes the things sown in it to spring up,
So the Lord [cm]God will (NE)cause (NF)righteousness and praise
To spring up before all the nations.

Zion’s Glory and New Name

62 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,
And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep quiet,
Until her (NG)righteousness goes forth like brightness,
And her (NH)salvation like a torch that is burning.
The (NI)nations will see your righteousness,
And all kings your glory;
And you will be called by a new (NJ)name
Which the mouth of the Lord will designate.
You will also be a (NK)crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
And a royal headband in the hand of your God.
It will no longer be said to you, “[cn](NL)Forsaken,”
Nor to your land will it any longer be said, “[co]Desolate”;
But you will be called, “[cp]My delight is in her,”
And your land, “[cq](NM)Married”;
For the (NN)Lord delights in you,
And to Him your land will be married.
For as a young man marries a virgin,
So your sons will marry you;
And as the [cr]groom rejoices over the bride,
So your (NO)God will rejoice over you.

On your walls, Jerusalem, I have appointed (NP)watchmen;
All day and all night they will never keep silent.
You who (NQ)profess the Lord, take no rest for yourselves;
And (NR)give Him no rest until He establishes
And makes (NS)Jerusalem an object of praise on the earth.
(NT)The Lord has sworn by His right hand and by His mighty arm:
“I will (NU)never again give your grain as food for your enemies,
Nor will [cs]foreigners drink your new wine for which you have labored.”
But those who (NV)harvest it will eat it and praise the Lord;
And those who gather it will drink it in the courtyards of My sanctuary.

10 Go through, (NW)go through the gates,
Clear a way [ct]for the people!
(NX)Build up, build up the (NY)highway,
Remove the stones, lift up a (NZ)flag over the peoples.
11 Behold, the Lord has proclaimed to the (OA)end of the earth:
(OB)Say to the daughter of Zion, “Behold, your (OC)salvation is coming;
(OD)Behold His reward is with Him, and His compensation before Him.”
12 And they will call them, “(OE)The holy people,
The (OF)redeemed of the Lord”;
And you will be called, “Sought Out, A City (OG)Not Abandoned.”

God’s Vengeance on the Nations

63 Who is this who comes from (OH)Edom,
With (OI)garments of [cu]glowing colors from (OJ)Bozrah,
This One who is majestic in His apparel,
[cv]Marching in the greatness of His strength?
“It is I, the One who speaks in righteousness, (OK)mighty to save.”
Why is Your apparel red,
And Your garments like one who (OL)treads in the wine press?
(OM)I have trodden the wine trough alone,
And from the peoples there was no one with Me.
I also (ON)trod them in My anger
And (OO)trampled them in My wrath;
And (OP)their [cw]lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments,
And I [cx]stained all My clothes.
For the (OQ)day of vengeance was in My heart,
And My year of redemption has come.
I looked, but there was (OR)no one to help,
And I was astonished and there was no one to uphold;
So My (OS)own arm brought salvation to Me,
And My wrath upheld Me.
I (OT)trampled down the peoples in My anger
And made them (OU)drunk with My wrath,
And I [cy]poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

God’s Ancient Mercies Recalled

I will make mention of the (OV)mercies of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord,
According to all that the Lord has granted us,
And the great (OW)goodness toward the house of Israel,
Which He has granted them according to His (OX)compassion
And according to the abundance of His mercies.
For He said, “Certainly they are (OY)My people,
Sons who will not deal falsely.”
So He became their (OZ)Savior.
In all their distress [cz](PA)He was distressed,
And the (PB)angel of His presence saved them;
In His (PC)love and in His mercy He (PD)redeemed them,
And He (PE)lifted them and carried them all the days of old.
10 But they (PF)rebelled
And grieved His (PG)Holy Spirit;
Therefore He turned Himself to become their enemy,
He fought against them.
11 Then (PH)His people remembered the days of old, of Moses.
Where is (PI)He who brought them up out of the sea with the [da]shepherds of His flock?
Where is He who (PJ)put His Holy Spirit in the midst of [db]them,
12 Who caused His (PK)glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses,
Who (PL)divided the waters before them to make for Himself an everlasting name,
13 Who led them through the depths?
Like the horse in the wilderness, they did not (PM)stumble;
14 Like the cattle which go down into the valley,
The Spirit of the (PN)Lord gave [dc]them rest.
So You (PO)led Your people,
To make for Yourself a glorious name.

You Are Our Father

15 (PP)Look down from heaven and see from Your holy and glorious (PQ)lofty habitation;
Where are Your (PR)zeal and Your mighty deeds?
The (PS)stirrings of Your heart and Your compassion are restrained toward me.
16 For You are our (PT)Father, though (PU)Abraham does not know us
And Israel does not recognize us.
You, Lord, are our Father,
Our (PV)Redeemer from ancient times is Your name.
17 Why, Lord, do You (PW)cause us to stray from Your ways
And (PX)harden our heart from fearing You?
(PY)Return for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your heritage.
18 Your holy people possessed Your sanctuary for a little while,
Our adversaries have (PZ)trampled it down.
19 We have become like those over whom You have never ruled,
Like those who were not called by Your name.

Prayer for Mercy and Help

64 [dd]Oh, that You would tear open the heavens and (QA)come down,
That the mountains would (QB)quake at Your presence—
[de]As fire kindles brushwood, as fire causes water to boil—
To make Your name known to Your adversaries,
That the (QC)nations may tremble at Your presence!
When You did (QD)awesome things which we did not expect,
You came down, the mountains quaked at Your presence.
For from days of old (QE)they have not heard or perceived by ear,
Nor has the eye seen a God besides You,
Who acts in behalf of one who (QF)waits for Him.
You (QG)meet him who rejoices in (QH)doing righteousness,
Who (QI)remembers You in Your ways.
Behold, (QJ)You were angry, for we sinned,
We continued in [df]our sins for a long time;
Yet shall we be saved?
For all of us have become like one who is (QK)unclean,
And all our (QL)righteous deeds are like a filthy garment;
And all of us (QM)wither like a leaf,
And our (QN)wrongdoings, like the wind, take us away.
There is (QO)no one who calls on Your name,
Who stirs himself to take hold of You;
For You have (QP)hidden Your face from us
And have [dg]surrendered us to the power of our wrongdoings.

But now, Lord, (QQ)You are our Father;
We are the (QR)clay, and You our potter,
And all of us are the (QS)work of Your hand.
Do not be (QT)angry beyond measure, Lord,
(QU)Nor remember wrongdoing forever.
Behold, please look, all of us are (QV)Your people.
10 Your (QW)holy cities have become a (QX)wilderness,
Zion has become a wilderness,
Jerusalem a desolation.
11 Our holy and beautiful (QY)house,
Where our fathers praised You,
Has been burned by fire;
And (QZ)all our precious things have become a ruin.
12 Will You (RA)restrain Yourself at these things, Lord?
Will You keep silent and afflict us beyond measure?

A Rebellious People

65 “I permitted Myself to be sought by (RB)those who did not ask for Me;
I permitted Myself to be found by those who did not seek Me.
I said, ‘Here am I, here am I,’
To a nation which (RC)did not call on My name.
(RD)I have spread out My hands all day long to a (RE)rebellious people,
Who walk in the way which is not good, [dh]following their own (RF)thoughts,
A people who continually (RG)provoke Me to My face,
Offering sacrifices in (RH)gardens and (RI)burning incense on bricks;
Who sit among graves and spend the night in secret places;
Who (RJ)eat pig’s flesh,
And the broth of unclean meat is in their pots.
Who say, ‘(RK)Keep to yourself, do not come near me,
For I am holier than you!’
These are smoke in My [di]nostrils,
A fire that burns all the day.
Behold, it is written before Me:
I will (RL)not keep silent, but (RM)I will repay;
I will even repay [dj]into their laps,
Both your own (RN)wrongdoings and the wrongdoings of your fathers together,” says the Lord.
“Because they have (RO)burned incense on the mountains
And (RP)scorned Me on the hills,
Therefore I will (RQ)measure their former work [dk]into their laps.”

This is what the Lord says:

“Just as the new wine is found in the cluster,
And one says, ‘Do not destroy it, for there is [dl]benefit in it,’
So I will act in behalf of My servants
In order (RR)not to destroy [dm]all of them.
I will bring forth [dn](RS)offspring from Jacob,
And an (RT)heir of My mountains from Judah;
(RU)My chosen ones shall inherit it,
And (RV)My servants will live there.
10 (RW)Sharon will be a pasture land for flocks,
And the (RX)Valley of Achor a resting place for herds,
For My people who (RY)seek Me.
11 But as for you who (RZ)abandon the Lord,
Who forget My (SA)holy mountain,
Who set a table for [do]Fortune,
And fill a jug of mixed wine for [dp]Destiny,
12 I will destine you for the (SB)sword,
And all of you will bow down to the (SC)slaughter.
Because I called, but you (SD)did not answer;
I spoke, but you did not listen.
Instead, you did evil in My sight
And chose that in which I did not delight.”

13 Therefore, this is what the Lord [dq]God says:
“Behold, My servants will (SE)eat, but you will be (SF)hungry.
Behold, My servants will (SG)drink, but you will be (SH)thirsty.
Behold, My servants will (SI)rejoice, but you will be (SJ)put to shame.
14 Behold, My servants will (SK)shout joyfully with a glad heart,
But you will (SL)cry out from a painful heart,
And you will wail from a broken spirit.
15 You will leave your name as a (SM)curse to My chosen ones,
And the Lord [dr]God will put you to death.
But [ds]My servants will be called by (SN)another name.
16 Because the one who [dt]is blessed on the earth
Will [du]be blessed by the (SO)God of truth;
And the one who swears an oath on the earth
Will (SP)swear by the God of truth;
Because the former troubles are forgotten,
And because they are hidden from My sight!

New Heavens and a New Earth

17 “For behold, I create (SQ)new heavens and a new earth;
And the (SR)former things will not be remembered or come to [dv]mind.
18 But be (SS)glad and rejoice forever in what I create;
For behold, I create Jerusalem for rejoicing
And her people for gladness.
19 I will also (ST)rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in My people;
And there will no longer be heard in her
The voice of (SU)weeping and the sound of crying.
20 No longer will there be [dw]in it an infant who lives only a few days,
Or an old person who does (SV)not [dx]live out his days;
For the youth will die at the age of a hundred,
And the [dy](SW)one who does not reach the age of a hundred
Will be thought accursed.
21 They will (SX)build houses and inhabit them;
They will also (SY)plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
22 They will not build and (SZ)another inhabit,
They will not plant and another eat;
For (TA)as the [dz]lifetime of a tree, so will be the days of My people,
And My chosen ones will (TB)fully enjoy the work of their hands.
23 They will (TC)not labor in vain,
Or give birth to children for disaster;
For they are the [ea](TD)descendants of those blessed by the Lord,
And their descendants with them.

24 It will also come to pass that before they call, I will (TE)answer; while they are still speaking, I will listen. 25 The (TF)wolf and the lamb will graze together, and the (TG)lion will eat straw like the ox; and (TH)dust will be the serpent’s food. They will (TI)do no evil or harm on all My (TJ)holy mountain,” says the Lord.

Heaven Is God’s Throne

66 This is what the Lord says:

(TK)Heaven is My throne and the earth is the footstool for My feet.
Where then is a (TL)house you could build for Me?
And where is a place that [eb]I may rest?
For (TM)My hand made all these things,
So all these things came into being,” declares the Lord.
“But I will look to this one,
At one who is humble and (TN)contrite in spirit, and who (TO)trembles at My word.

Hypocrisy Rebuked

But the one who slaughters an ox is like one who kills a person;
The one who sacrifices a lamb is like one who breaks a dog’s neck;
One who offers a grain offering is like one who offers (TP)pig’s blood;
One who [ec](TQ)burns incense is like one who blesses an idol.
As they have chosen their (TR)own ways,
And their souls delight in their (TS)abominations,
So I will (TT)choose their [ed]punishments
And (TU)bring on them what they dread.
Because I called, but (TV)no one answered;
I spoke, but they did not listen.
Instead, they did (TW)evil in My sight
And chose that in which I did not delight.”
Hear the word of the Lord, you who (TX)tremble at His word:
“Your brothers who (TY)hate you, who (TZ)exclude you on account of My name,
Have said, ‘Let the Lord be glorified, so that we may see your joy.’
But (UA)they will be put to shame.
A sound of uproar from the city, a voice from the temple,
The voice of the Lord who is (UB)dealing retribution to His enemies.

“Before she was in labor, (UC)she delivered;
Before her pain came, (UD)she gave birth to a boy.
(UE)Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things?
Can a land be [ee]born in one day?
Can a nation be given birth all at once?
As soon as Zion was in labor, she also delivered her sons.
Shall I bring to the point of birth but (UF)not give delivery?” says the Lord.
“Or shall I who gives delivery shut the womb?” says your God.

Joy in Jerusalem’s Future

10 “Be (UG)joyful with Jerusalem and rejoice for her, all you who (UH)love her;
Be exceedingly (UI)glad with her, all you who mourn over her,
11 So that you may nurse and (UJ)be satisfied with her comforting breasts,
So that you may drink fully and be delighted with her (UK)bountiful breasts.”
12 For this is what the Lord says: “Behold, I extend (UL)peace to her like a river,
And the (UM)glory of the nations like an overflowing stream;
And you will [ef]be nursed, you will be (UN)carried on the [eg]hip and rocked back and forth on the knees.
13 As one whom his mother comforts, so I will (UO)comfort you;
And you will be comforted in Jerusalem.”
14 Then you will (UP)see this, and your (UQ)heart will be glad,
And your (UR)bones will flourish like the new grass;
And the (US)hand of the Lord will be made known to His servants,
But He will be (UT)indignant toward His enemies.
15 For behold, the Lord will come in (UU)fire,
And His (UV)chariots like the whirlwind,
To render His anger with fury,
And His rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For the Lord will execute judgment by (UW)fire
And by His (UX)sword on [eh]humanity,
And those put to death by the Lord will be many.
17 “Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go to the (UY)gardens,
[ei]Following one in the center,
Who eat (UZ)pig’s flesh, detestable things, and mice,
Will (VA)come to an end altogether,” declares the Lord.

18 “For I [ej]know their works and their (VB)thoughts; [ek]the time is coming to (VC)gather all the nations and tongues. And they shall come and see My glory. 19 And I will put a (VD)sign among them and send survivors from them to the nations: (VE)Tarshish, [el]Put, (VF)Lud, [em]Meshech, (VG)Tubal, and [en]Javan, to the distant (VH)coastlands that have neither heard of My fame nor seen My glory. And they will (VI)declare My glory among the nations. 20 Then they shall (VJ)bring all your countrymen from all the nations as a grain offering to the Lord, on horses, in chariots, in litters, on mules, and on camels, to My (VK)holy mountain Jerusalem,” says the Lord, “just as the sons of Israel bring their grain offering in a (VL)clean vessel to the house of the Lord. 21 I will also take some of them as (VM)priests and Levites,” says the Lord.

22 “For just as the (VN)new heavens and the new earth,
Which I make, will endure before Me,” declares the Lord,
“So will your (VO)descendants and your (VP)name endure.
23 And it shall be from (VQ)new moon to new moon
And from Sabbath to Sabbath,
All [eo]mankind will come to (VR)bow down before Me,” says the Lord.
24 “Then they will go out and look
At the (VS)corpses of the people
Who have (VT)rebelled against Me.
For their (VU)worm will not die
(VV)And their fire will not be extinguished;
And they will be an (VW)abhorrence to all [ep]mankind.”

53 Who has believed our message(A)
    and to whom has the arm(B) of the Lord been revealed?(C)
He grew up before him like a tender shoot,(D)
    and like a root(E) out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
    nothing in his appearance(F) that we should desire him.
He was despised and rejected by mankind,
    a man of suffering,(G) and familiar with pain.(H)
Like one from whom people hide(I) their faces
    he was despised,(J) and we held him in low esteem.

Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,(K)
yet we considered him punished by God,(L)
    stricken by him, and afflicted.(M)
But he was pierced(N) for our transgressions,(O)
    he was crushed(P) for our iniquities;
the punishment(Q) that brought us peace(R) was on him,
    and by his wounds(S) we are healed.(T)
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,(U)
    each of us has turned to our own way;(V)
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity(W) of us all.

He was oppressed(X) and afflicted,
    yet he did not open his mouth;(Y)
he was led like a lamb(Z) to the slaughter,(AA)
    and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
    so he did not open his mouth.
By oppression[a] and judgment(AB) he was taken away.
    Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;(AC)
    for the transgression(AD) of my people he was punished.[b]
He was assigned a grave with the wicked,(AE)
    and with the rich(AF) in his death,
though he had done no violence,(AG)
    nor was any deceit in his mouth.(AH)

10 Yet it was the Lord’s will(AI) to crush(AJ) him and cause him to suffer,(AK)
    and though the Lord makes[c] his life an offering for sin,(AL)
he will see his offspring(AM) and prolong his days,
    and the will of the Lord will prosper(AN) in his hand.
11 After he has suffered,(AO)
    he will see the light(AP) of life[d] and be satisfied[e];
by his knowledge[f] my righteous servant(AQ) will justify(AR) many,
    and he will bear their iniquities.(AS)
12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,[g](AT)
    and he will divide the spoils(AU) with the strong,[h]
because he poured out his life unto death,(AV)
    and was numbered with the transgressors.(AW)
For he bore(AX) the sin of many,(AY)
    and made intercession(AZ) for the transgressors.

The Future Glory of Zion

54 “Sing, barren woman,(BA)
    you who never bore a child;
burst into song, shout for joy,(BB)
    you who were never in labor;(BC)
because more are the children(BD) of the desolate(BE) woman
    than of her who has a husband,(BF)
says the Lord.
“Enlarge the place of your tent,(BG)
    stretch your tent curtains wide,
    do not hold back;
lengthen your cords,
    strengthen your stakes.(BH)
For you will spread out to the right and to the left;
    your descendants(BI) will dispossess nations(BJ)
    and settle in their desolate(BK) cities.

“Do not be afraid;(BL) you will not be put to shame.(BM)
    Do not fear disgrace;(BN) you will not be humiliated.
You will forget the shame of your youth(BO)
    and remember no more the reproach(BP) of your widowhood.(BQ)
For your Maker(BR) is your husband(BS)
    the Lord Almighty is his name—
the Holy One(BT) of Israel is your Redeemer;(BU)
    he is called the God of all the earth.(BV)
The Lord will call you back(BW)
    as if you were a wife deserted(BX) and distressed in spirit—
a wife who married young,(BY)
    only to be rejected,” says your God.
“For a brief moment(BZ) I abandoned(CA) you,
    but with deep compassion(CB) I will bring you back.(CC)
In a surge of anger(CD)
    I hid(CE) my face from you for a moment,
but with everlasting kindness(CF)
    I will have compassion(CG) on you,”
    says the Lord your Redeemer.(CH)

“To me this is like the days of Noah,
    when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth.(CI)
So now I have sworn(CJ) not to be angry(CK) with you,
    never to rebuke(CL) you again.
10 Though the mountains be shaken(CM)
    and the hills be removed,
yet my unfailing love(CN) for you will not be shaken(CO)
    nor my covenant(CP) of peace(CQ) be removed,”
    says the Lord, who has compassion(CR) on you.

11 “Afflicted(CS) city, lashed by storms(CT) and not comforted,(CU)
    I will rebuild you with stones of turquoise,[i](CV)
    your foundations(CW) with lapis lazuli.(CX)
12 I will make your battlements of rubies,
    your gates(CY) of sparkling jewels,
    and all your walls of precious stones.
13 All your children will be taught by the Lord,(CZ)
    and great will be their peace.(DA)
14 In righteousness(DB) you will be established:(DC)
Tyranny(DD) will be far from you;
    you will have nothing to fear.(DE)
Terror(DF) will be far removed;
    it will not come near you.
15 If anyone does attack you, it will not be my doing;
    whoever attacks you will surrender(DG) to you.

16 “See, it is I who created the blacksmith(DH)
    who fans the coals into flame
    and forges a weapon(DI) fit for its work.
And it is I who have created the destroyer(DJ) to wreak havoc;
17     no weapon forged against you will prevail,(DK)
    and you will refute(DL) every tongue that accuses you.
This is the heritage of the servants(DM) of the Lord,
    and this is their vindication(DN) from me,”
declares the Lord.

Invitation to the Thirsty

55 “Come, all you who are thirsty,(DO)
    come to the waters;(DP)
and you who have no money,
    come, buy(DQ) and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk(DR)
    without money and without cost.(DS)
Why spend money on what is not bread,
    and your labor on what does not satisfy?(DT)
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,(DU)
    and you will delight in the richest(DV) of fare.
Give ear and come to me;
    listen,(DW) that you may live.(DX)
I will make an everlasting covenant(DY) with you,
    my faithful love(DZ) promised to David.(EA)
See, I have made him a witness(EB) to the peoples,
    a ruler and commander(EC) of the peoples.
Surely you will summon nations(ED) you know not,
    and nations you do not know will come running to you,(EE)
because of the Lord your God,
    the Holy One(EF) of Israel,
    for he has endowed you with splendor.”(EG)

Seek(EH) the Lord while he may be found;(EI)
    call(EJ) on him while he is near.
Let the wicked forsake(EK) their ways
    and the unrighteous their thoughts.(EL)
Let them turn(EM) to the Lord, and he will have mercy(EN) on them,
    and to our God, for he will freely pardon.(EO)

“For my thoughts(EP) are not your thoughts,
    neither are your ways my ways,”(EQ)
declares the Lord.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth,(ER)
    so are my ways higher than your ways
    and my thoughts than your thoughts.(ES)
10 As the rain(ET) and the snow
    come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
    without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,(EU)
    so that it yields seed(EV) for the sower and bread for the eater,(EW)
11 so is my word(EX) that goes out from my mouth:
    It will not return to me empty,(EY)
but will accomplish what I desire
    and achieve the purpose(EZ) for which I sent it.
12 You will go out in joy(FA)
    and be led forth in peace;(FB)
the mountains and hills
    will burst into song(FC) before you,
and all the trees(FD) of the field
    will clap their hands.(FE)
13 Instead of the thornbush will grow the juniper,
    and instead of briers(FF) the myrtle(FG) will grow.
This will be for the Lord’s renown,(FH)
    for an everlasting sign,
    that will endure forever.”

Salvation for Others

56 This is what the Lord says:

“Maintain justice(FI)
    and do what is right,(FJ)
for my salvation(FK) is close at hand
    and my righteousness(FL) will soon be revealed.
Blessed(FM) is the one who does this—
    the person who holds it fast,
who keeps the Sabbath(FN) without desecrating it,
    and keeps their hands from doing any evil.”

Let no foreigner(FO) who is bound to the Lord say,
    “The Lord will surely exclude me from his people.”(FP)
And let no eunuch(FQ) complain,
    “I am only a dry tree.”

For this is what the Lord says:

“To the eunuchs(FR) who keep my Sabbaths,
    who choose what pleases me
    and hold fast to my covenant(FS)
to them I will give within my temple and its walls(FT)
    a memorial(FU) and a name
    better than sons and daughters;
I will give them an everlasting name(FV)
    that will endure forever.(FW)
And foreigners(FX) who bind themselves to the Lord
    to minister(FY) to him,
to love the name(FZ) of the Lord,
    and to be his servants,
all who keep the Sabbath(GA) without desecrating it
    and who hold fast to my covenant—
these I will bring to my holy mountain(GB)
    and give them joy in my house of prayer.
Their burnt offerings and sacrifices(GC)
    will be accepted on my altar;
for my house will be called
    a house of prayer for all nations.(GD)(GE)
The Sovereign Lord declares—
    he who gathers the exiles of Israel:
“I will gather(GF) still others to them
    besides those already gathered.”

God’s Accusation Against the Wicked

Come, all you beasts of the field,(GG)
    come and devour, all you beasts of the forest!
10 Israel’s watchmen(GH) are blind,
    they all lack knowledge;(GI)
they are all mute dogs,
    they cannot bark;
they lie around and dream,
    they love to sleep.(GJ)
11 They are dogs with mighty appetites;
    they never have enough.
They are shepherds(GK) who lack understanding;(GL)
    they all turn to their own way,(GM)
    they seek their own gain.(GN)
12 “Come,” each one cries, “let me get wine!(GO)
    Let us drink our fill of beer!
And tomorrow will be like today,
    or even far better.”(GP)

57 The righteous perish,(GQ)
    and no one takes it to heart;(GR)
the devout are taken away,
    and no one understands
that the righteous are taken away
    to be spared from evil.(GS)
Those who walk uprightly(GT)
    enter into peace;
    they find rest(GU) as they lie in death.

“But you—come here, you children of a sorceress,(GV)
    you offspring of adulterers(GW) and prostitutes!(GX)
Who are you mocking?
    At whom do you sneer
    and stick out your tongue?
Are you not a brood of rebels,(GY)
    the offspring of liars?
You burn with lust among the oaks(GZ)
    and under every spreading tree;(HA)
you sacrifice your children(HB) in the ravines
    and under the overhanging crags.
The idols(HC) among the smooth stones of the ravines are your portion;
    indeed, they are your lot.
Yes, to them you have poured out drink offerings(HD)
    and offered grain offerings.
    In view of all this, should I relent?(HE)
You have made your bed on a high and lofty hill;(HF)
    there you went up to offer your sacrifices.(HG)
Behind your doors and your doorposts
    you have put your pagan symbols.
Forsaking me, you uncovered your bed,
    you climbed into it and opened it wide;
you made a pact with those whose beds you love,(HH)
    and you looked with lust on their naked bodies.(HI)
You went to Molek[j](HJ) with olive oil
    and increased your perfumes.(HK)
You sent your ambassadors[k](HL) far away;
    you descended to the very realm of the dead!(HM)
10 You wearied(HN) yourself by such going about,
    but you would not say, ‘It is hopeless.’(HO)
You found renewal of your strength,(HP)
    and so you did not faint.

11 “Whom have you so dreaded and feared(HQ)
    that you have not been true to me,
and have neither remembered(HR) me
    nor taken this to heart?(HS)
Is it not because I have long been silent(HT)
    that you do not fear me?
12 I will expose your righteousness and your works,(HU)
    and they will not benefit you.
13 When you cry out(HV) for help,
    let your collection of idols save(HW) you!
The wind will carry all of them off,
    a mere breath will blow(HX) them away.
But whoever takes refuge(HY) in me
    will inherit the land(HZ)
    and possess my holy mountain.”(IA)

Comfort for the Contrite

14 And it will be said:

“Build up, build up, prepare the road!(IB)
    Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people.”(IC)
15 For this is what the high and exalted(ID) One says—
    he who lives forever,(IE) whose name is holy:
“I live in a high(IF) and holy place,
    but also with the one who is contrite(IG) and lowly in spirit,(IH)
to revive the spirit of the lowly
    and to revive the heart of the contrite.(II)
16 I will not accuse(IJ) them forever,
    nor will I always be angry,(IK)
for then they would faint away because of me—
    the very people(IL) I have created.
17 I was enraged by their sinful greed;(IM)
    I punished them, and hid(IN) my face in anger,
    yet they kept on in their willful ways.(IO)
18 I have seen their ways, but I will heal(IP) them;
    I will guide(IQ) them and restore comfort(IR) to Israel’s mourners,
19     creating praise on their lips.(IS)
Peace, peace,(IT) to those far and near,”(IU)
    says the Lord. “And I will heal them.”
20 But the wicked(IV) are like the tossing sea,(IW)
    which cannot rest,
    whose waves cast up mire(IX) and mud.
21 “There is no peace,”(IY) says my God, “for the wicked.”(IZ)

True Fasting

58 “Shout it aloud,(JA) do not hold back.
    Raise your voice like a trumpet.(JB)
Declare to my people their rebellion(JC)
    and to the descendants of Jacob their sins.(JD)
For day after day they seek(JE) me out;
    they seem eager to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that does what is right
    and has not forsaken(JF) the commands of its God.
They ask me for just decisions
    and seem eager for God to come near(JG) them.
‘Why have we fasted,’(JH) they say,
    ‘and you have not seen it?
Why have we humbled(JI) ourselves,
    and you have not noticed?’(JJ)

“Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please(JK)
    and exploit all your workers.
Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife,(JL)
    and in striking each other with wicked fists.
You cannot fast as you do today
    and expect your voice to be heard(JM) on high.
Is this the kind of fast(JN) I have chosen,
    only a day for people to humble(JO) themselves?
Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed(JP)
    and for lying in sackcloth and ashes?(JQ)
Is that what you call a fast,
    a day acceptable to the Lord?

“Is not this the kind of fasting(JR) I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice(JS)
    and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed(JT) free
    and break every yoke?(JU)
Is it not to share your food with the hungry(JV)
    and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter(JW)
when you see the naked, to clothe(JX) them,
    and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?(JY)
Then your light will break forth like the dawn,(JZ)
    and your healing(KA) will quickly appear;
then your righteousness[l](KB) will go before you,
    and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.(KC)
Then you will call,(KD) and the Lord will answer;(KE)
    you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

“If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
    with the pointing finger(KF) and malicious talk,(KG)
10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
    and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,(KH)
then your light(KI) will rise in the darkness,
    and your night will become like the noonday.(KJ)
11 The Lord will guide(KK) you always;
    he will satisfy your needs(KL) in a sun-scorched land(KM)
    and will strengthen(KN) your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,(KO)
    like a spring(KP) whose waters never fail.
12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins(KQ)
    and will raise up the age-old foundations;(KR)
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,(KS)
    Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.

13 “If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath(KT)
    and from doing as you please on my holy day,
if you call the Sabbath a delight(KU)
    and the Lord’s holy day honorable,
and if you honor it by not going your own way
    and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,(KV)
14 then you will find your joy(KW) in the Lord,
    and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights(KX) of the land
    and to feast on the inheritance(KY) of your father Jacob.”
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.(KZ)

Sin, Confession and Redemption

59 Surely the arm(LA) of the Lord is not too short(LB) to save,
    nor his ear too dull to hear.(LC)
But your iniquities have separated(LD)
    you from your God;
your sins have hidden his face from you,
    so that he will not hear.(LE)
For your hands are stained with blood,(LF)
    your fingers with guilt.(LG)
Your lips have spoken falsely,(LH)
    and your tongue mutters wicked things.
No one calls for justice;(LI)
    no one pleads a case with integrity.
They rely(LJ) on empty arguments, they utter lies;(LK)
    they conceive trouble and give birth to evil.(LL)
They hatch the eggs of vipers(LM)
    and spin a spider’s web.(LN)
Whoever eats their eggs will die,
    and when one is broken, an adder is hatched.
Their cobwebs are useless for clothing;
    they cannot cover themselves with what they make.(LO)
Their deeds are evil deeds,
    and acts of violence(LP) are in their hands.
Their feet rush into sin;
    they are swift to shed innocent blood.(LQ)
They pursue evil schemes;(LR)
    acts of violence mark their ways.(LS)
The way of peace they do not know;(LT)
    there is no justice in their paths.
They have turned them into crooked roads;(LU)
    no one who walks along them will know peace.(LV)

So justice is far from us,
    and righteousness does not reach us.
We look for light, but all is darkness;(LW)
    for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows.
10 Like the blind(LX) we grope along the wall,
    feeling our way like people without eyes.
At midday we stumble(LY) as if it were twilight;
    among the strong, we are like the dead.(LZ)
11 We all growl like bears;
    we moan mournfully like doves.(MA)
We look for justice, but find none;
    for deliverance, but it is far away.

12 For our offenses(MB) are many in your sight,
    and our sins testify(MC) against us.
Our offenses are ever with us,
    and we acknowledge our iniquities:(MD)
13 rebellion(ME) and treachery against the Lord,
    turning our backs(MF) on our God,
inciting revolt and oppression,(MG)
    uttering lies(MH) our hearts have conceived.
14 So justice(MI) is driven back,
    and righteousness(MJ) stands at a distance;
truth(MK) has stumbled in the streets,
    honesty cannot enter.
15 Truth(ML) is nowhere to be found,
    and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey.

The Lord looked and was displeased
    that there was no justice.(MM)
16 He saw that there was no one,(MN)
    he was appalled that there was no one to intervene;(MO)
so his own arm achieved salvation(MP) for him,
    and his own righteousness(MQ) sustained him.
17 He put on righteousness as his breastplate,(MR)
    and the helmet(MS) of salvation on his head;
he put on the garments(MT) of vengeance(MU)
    and wrapped himself in zeal(MV) as in a cloak.
18 According to what they have done,
    so will he repay(MW)
wrath to his enemies
    and retribution to his foes;
    he will repay the islands(MX) their due.
19 From the west,(MY) people will fear the name of the Lord,
    and from the rising of the sun,(MZ) they will revere his glory.(NA)
For he will come like a pent-up flood
    that the breath(NB) of the Lord drives along.[m]

20 “The Redeemer(NC) will come to Zion,(ND)
    to those in Jacob who repent of their sins,”(NE)
declares the Lord.

21 “As for me, this is my covenant(NF) with them,” says the Lord. “My Spirit,(NG) who is on you, will not depart from you,(NH) and my words that I have put in your mouth(NI) will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants—from this time on and forever,” says the Lord.

The Glory of Zion

60 “Arise,(NJ) shine, for your light(NK) has come,
    and the glory(NL) of the Lord rises upon you.
See, darkness(NM) covers the earth
    and thick darkness(NN) is over the peoples,
but the Lord rises upon you
    and his glory appears over you.
Nations(NO) will come to your light,(NP)
    and kings(NQ) to the brightness of your dawn.

“Lift up your eyes and look about you:
    All assemble(NR) and come to you;
your sons come from afar,(NS)
    and your daughters(NT) are carried on the hip.(NU)
Then you will look and be radiant,(NV)
    your heart will throb and swell with joy;(NW)
the wealth(NX) on the seas will be brought to you,
    to you the riches of the nations will come.
Herds of camels(NY) will cover your land,
    young camels of Midian(NZ) and Ephah.(OA)
And all from Sheba(OB) will come,
    bearing gold and incense(OC)
    and proclaiming the praise(OD) of the Lord.
All Kedar’s(OE) flocks will be gathered to you,
    the rams of Nebaioth will serve you;
they will be accepted as offerings(OF) on my altar,(OG)
    and I will adorn my glorious temple.(OH)

“Who are these(OI) that fly along like clouds,(OJ)
    like doves to their nests?
Surely the islands(OK) look to me;
    in the lead are the ships of Tarshish,[n](OL)
bringing(OM) your children from afar,
    with their silver and gold,(ON)
to the honor(OO) of the Lord your God,
    the Holy One(OP) of Israel,
    for he has endowed you with splendor.(OQ)

10 “Foreigners(OR) will rebuild your walls,
    and their kings(OS) will serve you.
Though in anger I struck you,
    in favor(OT) I will show you compassion.(OU)
11 Your gates(OV) will always stand open,
    they will never be shut, day or night,
so that people may bring you the wealth of the nations(OW)
    their kings(OX) led in triumphal procession.
12 For the nation or kingdom that will not serve(OY) you will perish;
    it will be utterly ruined.(OZ)

13 “The glory of Lebanon(PA) will come to you,
    the juniper, the fir and the cypress together,(PB)
to adorn my sanctuary;(PC)
    and I will glorify the place for my feet.(PD)
14 The children of your oppressors(PE) will come bowing before you;
    all who despise you will bow down(PF) at your feet
and will call you the City(PG) of the Lord,
    Zion(PH) of the Holy One(PI) of Israel.

15 “Although you have been forsaken(PJ) and hated,
    with no one traveling(PK) through,
I will make you the everlasting pride(PL)
    and the joy(PM) of all generations.
16 You will drink the milk of nations
    and be nursed(PN) at royal breasts.
Then you will know(PO) that I, the Lord, am your Savior,(PP)
    your Redeemer,(PQ) the Mighty One of Jacob.(PR)
17 Instead of bronze I will bring you gold,(PS)
    and silver in place of iron.
Instead of wood I will bring you bronze,
    and iron in place of stones.
I will make peace(PT) your governor
    and well-being your ruler.(PU)
18 No longer will violence(PV) be heard in your land,
    nor ruin or destruction(PW) within your borders,
but you will call your walls Salvation(PX)
    and your gates Praise.(PY)
19 The sun will no more be your light by day,
    nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you,
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,(PZ)
    and your God will be your glory.(QA)
20 Your sun(QB) will never set again,
    and your moon will wane no more;
the Lord will be your everlasting light,
    and your days of sorrow(QC) will end.
21 Then all your people will be righteous(QD)
    and they will possess(QE) the land forever.
They are the shoot I have planted,(QF)
    the work of my hands,(QG)
    for the display of my splendor.(QH)
22 The least of you will become a thousand,
    the smallest a mighty nation.(QI)
I am the Lord;
    in its time I will do this swiftly.”(QJ)

The Year of the Lord’s Favor

61 The Spirit(QK) of the Sovereign Lord(QL) is on me,
    because the Lord has anointed(QM) me
    to proclaim good news(QN) to the poor.(QO)
He has sent me to bind up(QP) the brokenhearted,
    to proclaim freedom(QQ) for the captives(QR)
    and release from darkness for the prisoners,[o]
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor(QS)
    and the day of vengeance(QT) of our God,
to comfort(QU) all who mourn,(QV)
    and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown(QW) of beauty
    instead of ashes,(QX)
the oil(QY) of joy
    instead of mourning,(QZ)
and a garment of praise
    instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
    a planting(RA) of the Lord
    for the display of his splendor.(RB)

They will rebuild the ancient ruins(RC)
    and restore the places long devastated;
they will renew the ruined cities
    that have been devastated for generations.
Strangers(RD) will shepherd your flocks;
    foreigners will work your fields and vineyards.
And you will be called priests(RE) of the Lord,
    you will be named ministers of our God.
You will feed on the wealth(RF) of nations,
    and in their riches you will boast.

Instead of your shame(RG)
    you will receive a double(RH) portion,
and instead of disgrace
    you will rejoice in your inheritance.
And so you will inherit(RI) a double portion in your land,
    and everlasting joy(RJ) will be yours.

“For I, the Lord, love justice;(RK)
    I hate robbery and wrongdoing.
In my faithfulness I will reward my people
    and make an everlasting covenant(RL) with them.
Their descendants(RM) will be known among the nations
    and their offspring among the peoples.
All who see them will acknowledge
    that they are a people the Lord has blessed.”(RN)

10 I delight greatly in the Lord;
    my soul rejoices(RO) in my God.
For he has clothed me with garments of salvation
    and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness,(RP)
as a bridegroom adorns his head(RQ) like a priest,
    and as a bride(RR) adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the soil makes the sprout come up
    and a garden(RS) causes seeds to grow,
so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness(RT)
    and praise spring up before all nations.

Zion’s New Name

62 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,(RU)
    for Jerusalem’s sake I will not remain quiet,
till her vindication(RV) shines out like the dawn,(RW)
    her salvation(RX) like a blazing torch.
The nations(RY) will see your vindication,
    and all kings your glory;
you will be called by a new name(RZ)
    that the mouth of the Lord will bestow.
You will be a crown(SA) of splendor in the Lord’s hand,
    a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
No longer will they call you Deserted,(SB)
    or name your land Desolate.(SC)
But you will be called Hephzibah,[p](SD)
    and your land Beulah[q];
for the Lord will take delight(SE) in you,
    and your land will be married.(SF)
As a young man marries a young woman,
    so will your Builder marry you;
as a bridegroom(SG) rejoices over his bride,
    so will your God rejoice(SH) over you.

I have posted watchmen(SI) on your walls, Jerusalem;
    they will never be silent day or night.
You who call on the Lord,
    give yourselves no rest,(SJ)
and give him no rest(SK) till he establishes Jerusalem
    and makes her the praise(SL) of the earth.

The Lord has sworn(SM) by his right hand
    and by his mighty arm:
“Never again will I give your grain(SN)
    as food for your enemies,
and never again will foreigners drink the new wine
    for which you have toiled;
but those who harvest it will eat(SO) it
    and praise the Lord,(SP)
and those who gather the grapes will drink it
    in the courts of my sanctuary.”(SQ)

10 Pass through, pass through the gates!(SR)
    Prepare the way for the people.
Build up, build up the highway!(SS)
    Remove the stones.
Raise a banner(ST) for the nations.

11 The Lord has made proclamation
    to the ends of the earth:(SU)
“Say to Daughter Zion,(SV)
    ‘See, your Savior comes!(SW)
See, his reward is with him,
    and his recompense accompanies him.’”(SX)
12 They will be called(SY) the Holy People,(SZ)
    the Redeemed(TA) of the Lord;
and you will be called Sought After,
    the City No Longer Deserted.(TB)

God’s Day of Vengeance and Redemption

63 Who is this coming from Edom,(TC)
    from Bozrah,(TD) with his garments stained crimson?(TE)
Who is this, robed in splendor,
    striding forward in the greatness of his strength?(TF)

“It is I, proclaiming victory,
    mighty to save.”(TG)

Why are your garments red,
    like those of one treading the winepress?(TH)

“I have trodden the winepress(TI) alone;
    from the nations no one was with me.
I trampled(TJ) them in my anger
    and trod them down in my wrath;(TK)
their blood spattered my garments,(TL)
    and I stained all my clothing.
It was for me the day of vengeance;(TM)
    the year for me to redeem had come.
I looked, but there was no one(TN) to help,
    I was appalled that no one gave support;
so my own arm(TO) achieved salvation for me,
    and my own wrath sustained me.(TP)
I trampled(TQ) the nations in my anger;
    in my wrath I made them drunk(TR)
    and poured their blood(TS) on the ground.”

Praise and Prayer

I will tell of the kindnesses(TT) of the Lord,
    the deeds for which he is to be praised,
    according to all the Lord has done for us—
yes, the many good things(TU)
    he has done for Israel,
    according to his compassion(TV) and many kindnesses.
He said, “Surely they are my people,(TW)
    children who will be true to me”;
    and so he became their Savior.(TX)
In all their distress he too was distressed,
    and the angel(TY) of his presence(TZ) saved them.[r]
In his love and mercy he redeemed(UA) them;
    he lifted them up and carried(UB) them
    all the days of old.(UC)
10 Yet they rebelled(UD)
    and grieved his Holy Spirit.(UE)
So he turned and became their enemy(UF)
    and he himself fought(UG) against them.

11 Then his people recalled[s] the days of old,
    the days of Moses and his people—
where is he who brought them through the sea,(UH)
    with the shepherd of his flock?(UI)
Where is he who set
    his Holy Spirit(UJ) among them,
12 who sent his glorious arm(UK) of power
    to be at Moses’ right hand,
who divided the waters(UL) before them,
    to gain for himself everlasting renown,(UM)
13 who led(UN) them through the depths?(UO)
Like a horse in open country,
    they did not stumble;(UP)
14 like cattle that go down to the plain,
    they were given rest(UQ) by the Spirit of the Lord.
This is how you guided your people
    to make for yourself a glorious name.

15 Look down from heaven(UR) and see,
    from your lofty throne,(US) holy and glorious.
Where are your zeal(UT) and your might?
    Your tenderness and compassion(UU) are withheld(UV) from us.
16 But you are our Father,(UW)
    though Abraham does not know us
    or Israel acknowledge(UX) us;
you, Lord, are our Father,
    our Redeemer(UY) from of old is your name.
17 Why, Lord, do you make us wander(UZ) from your ways
    and harden our hearts(VA) so we do not revere(VB) you?
Return(VC) for the sake of your servants,
    the tribes that are your inheritance.(VD)
18 For a little while(VE) your people possessed your holy place,
    but now our enemies have trampled(VF) down your sanctuary.(VG)
19 We are yours from of old;
    but you have not ruled over them,
    they have not been called[t] by your name.(VH)

64 [u]Oh, that you would rend the heavens(VI) and come down,(VJ)
    that the mountains(VK) would tremble before you!
As when fire sets twigs ablaze
    and causes water to boil,
come down to make your name(VL) known to your enemies
    and cause the nations to quake(VM) before you!
For when you did awesome(VN) things that we did not expect,
    you came down, and the mountains trembled(VO) before you.
Since ancient times no one has heard,
    no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,(VP)
    who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.(VQ)
You come to the help of those who gladly do right,(VR)
    who remember your ways.
But when we continued to sin against them,
    you were angry.(VS)
    How then can we be saved?
All of us have become like one who is unclean,(VT)
    and all our righteous(VU) acts are like filthy rags;
we all shrivel up like a leaf,(VV)
    and like the wind our sins sweep us away.(VW)
No one(VX) calls on your name(VY)
    or strives to lay hold of you;
for you have hidden(VZ) your face from us
    and have given us over(WA) to[v] our sins.

Yet you, Lord, are our Father.(WB)
    We are the clay, you are the potter;(WC)
    we are all the work of your hand.(WD)
Do not be angry(WE) beyond measure, Lord;
    do not remember our sins(WF) forever.
Oh, look on us, we pray,
    for we are all your people.(WG)
10 Your sacred cities(WH) have become a wasteland;
    even Zion is a wasteland, Jerusalem a desolation.(WI)
11 Our holy and glorious temple,(WJ) where our ancestors praised you,
    has been burned with fire,
    and all that we treasured(WK) lies in ruins.
12 After all this, Lord, will you hold yourself back?(WL)
    Will you keep silent(WM) and punish us beyond measure?

Judgment and Salvation

65 “I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me;
    I was found by those who did not seek me.(WN)
To a nation(WO) that did not call on my name,(WP)
    I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’
All day long I have held out my hands
    to an obstinate people,(WQ)
who walk in ways not good,
    pursuing their own imaginations(WR)
a people who continually provoke me
    to my very face,(WS)
offering sacrifices in gardens(WT)
    and burning incense(WU) on altars of brick;
who sit among the graves(WV)
    and spend their nights keeping secret vigil;
who eat the flesh of pigs,(WW)
    and whose pots hold broth of impure meat;
who say, ‘Keep away; don’t come near me,
    for I am too sacred(WX) for you!’
Such people are smoke(WY) in my nostrils,
    a fire that keeps burning all day.

“See, it stands written before me:
    I will not keep silent(WZ) but will pay back(XA) in full;
    I will pay it back into their laps(XB)
both your sins(XC) and the sins of your ancestors,”(XD)
    says the Lord.
“Because they burned sacrifices on the mountains
    and defied me on the hills,(XE)
I will measure into their laps
    the full payment(XF) for their former deeds.”

This is what the Lord says:

“As when juice is still found in a cluster of grapes(XG)
    and people say, ‘Don’t destroy it,
    there is still a blessing in it,’
so will I do in behalf of my servants;(XH)
    I will not destroy them all.
I will bring forth descendants(XI) from Jacob,
    and from Judah those who will possess(XJ) my mountains;
my chosen(XK) people will inherit them,
    and there will my servants live.(XL)
10 Sharon(XM) will become a pasture for flocks,(XN)
    and the Valley of Achor(XO) a resting place for herds,
    for my people who seek(XP) me.

11 “But as for you who forsake(XQ) the Lord
    and forget my holy mountain,(XR)
who spread a table for Fortune
    and fill bowls of mixed wine(XS) for Destiny,
12 I will destine you for the sword,(XT)
    and all of you will fall in the slaughter;(XU)
for I called but you did not answer,(XV)
    I spoke but you did not listen.(XW)
You did evil in my sight
    and chose what displeases me.”(XX)

13 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“My servants will eat,(XY)
    but you will go hungry;(XZ)
my servants will drink,(YA)
    but you will go thirsty;(YB)
my servants will rejoice,(YC)
    but you will be put to shame.(YD)
14 My servants will sing(YE)
    out of the joy of their hearts,
but you will cry out(YF)
    from anguish of heart
    and wail in brokenness of spirit.
15 You will leave your name
    for my chosen ones to use in their curses;(YG)
the Sovereign Lord will put you to death,
    but to his servants he will give another name.(YH)
16 Whoever invokes a blessing(YI) in the land
    will do so by the one true God;(YJ)
whoever takes an oath in the land
    will swear(YK) by the one true God.
For the past troubles(YL) will be forgotten
    and hidden from my eyes.

New Heavens and a New Earth

17 “See, I will create
    new heavens and a new earth.(YM)
The former things will not be remembered,(YN)
    nor will they come to mind.
18 But be glad and rejoice(YO) forever
    in what I will create,
for I will create Jerusalem(YP) to be a delight
    and its people a joy.
19 I will rejoice(YQ) over Jerusalem
    and take delight(YR) in my people;
the sound of weeping and of crying(YS)
    will be heard in it no more.

20 “Never again will there be in it
    an infant(YT) who lives but a few days,
    or an old man who does not live out his years;(YU)
the one who dies at a hundred
    will be thought a mere child;
the one who fails to reach[w] a hundred
    will be considered accursed.
21 They will build houses(YV) and dwell in them;
    they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.(YW)
22 No longer will they build houses and others live in them,(YX)
    or plant and others eat.
For as the days of a tree,(YY)
    so will be the days(YZ) of my people;
my chosen(ZA) ones will long enjoy
    the work of their hands.
23 They will not labor in vain,(ZB)
    nor will they bear children doomed to misfortune;(ZC)
for they will be a people blessed(ZD) by the Lord,
    they and their descendants(ZE) with them.
24 Before they call(ZF) I will answer;(ZG)
    while they are still speaking(ZH) I will hear.
25 The wolf and the lamb(ZI) will feed together,
    and the lion will eat straw like the ox,(ZJ)
    and dust will be the serpent’s(ZK) food.
They will neither harm nor destroy
    on all my holy mountain,”(ZL)
says the Lord.

Judgment and Hope

66 This is what the Lord says:

“Heaven is my throne,(ZM)
    and the earth is my footstool.(ZN)
Where is the house(ZO) you will build for me?
    Where will my resting place be?
Has not my hand made all these things,(ZP)
    and so they came into being?”
declares the Lord.

“These are the ones I look on with favor:
    those who are humble and contrite in spirit,(ZQ)
    and who tremble at my word.(ZR)
But whoever sacrifices a bull(ZS)
    is like one who kills a person,
and whoever offers a lamb
    is like one who breaks a dog’s neck;
whoever makes a grain offering
    is like one who presents pig’s(ZT) blood,
and whoever burns memorial incense(ZU)
    is like one who worships an idol.
They have chosen their own ways,(ZV)
    and they delight in their abominations;(ZW)
so I also will choose harsh treatment for them
    and will bring on them what they dread.(ZX)
For when I called, no one answered,(ZY)
    when I spoke, no one listened.
They did evil(ZZ) in my sight
    and chose what displeases me.”(AAA)

Hear the word of the Lord,
    you who tremble at his word:(AAB)
“Your own people who hate(AAC) you,
    and exclude you because of my name, have said,
‘Let the Lord be glorified,
    that we may see your joy!’
    Yet they will be put to shame.(AAD)
Hear that uproar from the city,
    hear that noise from the temple!
It is the sound(AAE) of the Lord
    repaying(AAF) his enemies all they deserve.

“Before she goes into labor,(AAG)
    she gives birth;
before the pains come upon her,
    she delivers a son.(AAH)
Who has ever heard of such things?
    Who has ever seen(AAI) things like this?
Can a country be born in a day(AAJ)
    or a nation be brought forth in a moment?
Yet no sooner is Zion in labor
    than she gives birth to her children.(AAK)
Do I bring to the moment of birth(AAL)
    and not give delivery?” says the Lord.
“Do I close up the womb
    when I bring to delivery?” says your God.
10 “Rejoice(AAM) with Jerusalem and be glad for her,
    all you who love(AAN) her;
rejoice greatly with her,
    all you who mourn(AAO) over her.
11 For you will nurse(AAP) and be satisfied
    at her comforting breasts;(AAQ)
you will drink deeply
    and delight in her overflowing abundance.”(AAR)

12 For this is what the Lord says:

“I will extend peace(AAS) to her like a river,(AAT)
    and the wealth(AAU) of nations like a flooding stream;
you will nurse and be carried(AAV) on her arm
    and dandled on her knees.
13 As a mother comforts her child,(AAW)
    so will I comfort(AAX) you;
    and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.”

14 When you see this, your heart will rejoice(AAY)
    and you will flourish(AAZ) like grass;
the hand(ABA) of the Lord will be made known to his servants,(ABB)
    but his fury(ABC) will be shown to his foes.
15 See, the Lord is coming with fire,(ABD)
    and his chariots(ABE) are like a whirlwind;(ABF)
he will bring down his anger with fury,
    and his rebuke(ABG) with flames of fire.
16 For with fire(ABH) and with his sword(ABI)
    the Lord will execute judgment(ABJ) on all people,
    and many will be those slain(ABK) by the Lord.

17 “Those who consecrate and purify themselves to go into the gardens,(ABL) following one who is among those who eat the flesh of pigs,(ABM) rats(ABN) and other unclean things—they will meet their end(ABO) together with the one they follow,” declares the Lord.

18 “And I, because of what they have planned and done,(ABP) am about to come[x] and gather the people of all nations(ABQ) and languages, and they will come and see my glory.(ABR)

19 “I will set a sign(ABS) among them, and I will send some of those who survive(ABT) to the nations—to Tarshish,(ABU) to the Libyans[y] and Lydians(ABV) (famous as archers), to Tubal(ABW) and Greece,(ABX) and to the distant islands(ABY) that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory.(ABZ) They will proclaim my glory among the nations. 20 And they will bring(ACA) all your people, from all the nations, to my holy mountain(ACB) in Jerusalem as an offering to the Lord—on horses, in chariots and wagons, and on mules and camels,”(ACC) says the Lord. “They will bring them, as the Israelites bring their grain offerings, to the temple of the Lord in ceremonially clean vessels.(ACD) 21 And I will select some of them also to be priests(ACE) and Levites,” says the Lord.

22 “As the new heavens and the new earth(ACF) that I make will endure before me,” declares the Lord, “so will your name and descendants endure.(ACG) 23 From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath(ACH) to another, all mankind will come and bow down(ACI) before me,” says the Lord. 24 “And they will go out and look on the dead bodies(ACJ) of those who rebelled(ACK) against me; the worms(ACL) that eat them will not die, the fire that burns them will not be quenched,(ACM) and they will be loathsome to all mankind.”
