God Is Like a Father

You are struggling against sin, but you have not had to give up your life for the cause. You are children of God, and he speaks words of comfort to you. You have forgotten these words:

“My child, don’t think the Lord’s discipline is worth nothing,
    and don’t stop trying when he corrects you.
The Lord disciplines everyone he loves;
    he punishes everyone he accepts as a child.” (A)

God Disciplines His Children

In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.(A) And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
    and do not lose heart(B) when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,(C)
    and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[a](D)
