32 And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of (A)Gideon and (B)Barak and (C)Samson and (D)Jephthah, also of (E)David and (F)Samuel and the prophets: 33 who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, (G)stopped the mouths of lions, 34 (H)quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. 35 (I)Women received their dead raised to life again.

Others were (J)tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. 36 Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and (K)of chains and imprisonment. 37 (L)They were stoned, they were sawn in two, [a]were tempted, were slain with the sword. (M)They wandered about (N)in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented— 38 of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, (O)in dens and caves of the earth.

39 And all these, (P)having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, 40 God having provided something better for us, that they should not be (Q)made perfect apart from us.

The Race of Faith

12 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, (R)let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and (S)let us run (T)with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the [b]author and [c]finisher of our faith, (U)who for the joy that was set before Him (V)endured the cross, despising the shame, and (W)has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The Discipline of God(X)

(Y)For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, (Z)lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. (AA)You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons:

(AB)“My son, do not despise the [d]chastening of the Lord,
Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
For (AC)whom the Lord loves He chastens,
And scourges every son whom He receives.”

(AD)If[e] you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what (AE)son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, (AF)of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to (AG)the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, (AH)that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no [f]chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields (AI)the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Renew Your Spiritual Vitality(AJ)

12 Therefore (AK)strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.

32 And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon,(A) Barak,(B) Samson(C) and Jephthah,(D) about David(E) and Samuel(F) and the prophets, 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms,(G) administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions,(H) 34 quenched the fury of the flames,(I) and escaped the edge of the sword;(J) whose weakness was turned to strength;(K) and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.(L) 35 Women received back their dead, raised to life again.(M) There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection. 36 Some faced jeers and flogging,(N) and even chains and imprisonment.(O) 37 They were put to death by stoning;[a](P) they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword.(Q) They went about in sheepskins and goatskins,(R) destitute, persecuted and mistreated— 38 the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves(S) and in holes in the ground.

39 These were all commended(T) for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised,(U) 40 since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us(V) would they be made perfect.(W)

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run(X) with perseverance(Y) the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus,(Z) the pioneer(AA) and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross,(AB) scorning its shame,(AC) and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.(AD) Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary(AE) and lose heart.

God Disciplines His Children

In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.(AF) And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart(AG) when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,(AH)
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[b](AI)

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.(AJ) For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline(AK)—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits(AL) and live!(AM) 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.(AN) 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace(AO) for those who have been trained by it.

12 Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.(AP) 13 “Make level paths for your feet,”[c](AQ) so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.(AR)
