22 1,2 The faith of Abraham is proved in offering his son Isaac. 3 Isaac is a figure of Christ. 20 The generations of Nahor Abraham’s brother of whom cometh Rebekah.

¹ And after these things God did ^(A)prove Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham. Who answered, ^[a]Here am I.

² And he said, Take now thine only son Isaac whom thou lovest, and get thee unto the land of ^[b]Moriah, and ^[c]offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains, which I will show thee.

³ Then Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his servants with him, and Isaac his son, and clove wood for the burnt offering, and rose up and went to the place, which God had told him.

⁴ ¶ Then the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off,

⁵ And said unto his servants, Abide you here with the ass: for I and the child will go yonder and worship, and ^[d]come again unto you.

⁶ Then Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son, and he took the fire in his hand, and the knife: and they went both together.

⁷ Then spake Isaac unto Abraham his father, and said, My father. And he answered, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?

⁸ Then Abraham answered, My son, God will ^[e]provide him a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both together.

⁹ And when they came to the place which God had showed him, Abraham built an altar there, and couched the wood, and ^[f]bound Isaac his son, ^(B)and laid him on the altar upon the wood.

¹⁰ And Abraham stretching forth his hand, took the knife to kill his son.

¹¹ But the Angel of the Lord called unto him from heaven, saying, Abraham, Abraham. And he answered, Here am I.

¹² Then he said, Lay not thine hand upon the child, neither do anything unto him: for now I ^[g]know that thou fearest God, seeing for my sake ^[h]thou hast not spared thine ^[i]only son.

¹³ And Abraham lifting up his eyes, looked and behold, there was a ram behind him caught by the horns in a bush: then Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

¹⁴ And Abraham called the name of that place ^[j]Jehovah Jireh: as it is said this day, In the mount will the Lord ^[k]be seen.

¹⁵ ¶ And the Angel of the Lord cried unto Abraham from heaven the second time,

¹⁶ And said, ^(C)By ^[l]myself have I sworn (saith the Lord) because thou hast done this thing, and hast not spared thine only son,

¹⁷ Therefore will I surely bless thee, and will greatly multiply thy seed, as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore, and thy seed shall possess the ^[m]gate of his enemies.

^18 (D)And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because thou hast obeyed my voice.

¹⁹ Then turned Abraham again unto his servants, and they rose up, and went together to Beersheba: and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.

²⁰ ¶ And after these things one told Abraham, saying, Behold Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor:

²¹ To wit, Huz his eldest son, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of ^[n]Aram,

²² And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.

²³ And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight did Milcah bear to Nahor, Abraham’s brother.

²⁴ And his ^[o]concubine called Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash and Maachah.

23 2 Abraham laments the death of Sarah. 4 He buyeth a field to bury her, of the Hittites. 13 The equity of Abraham. 19 Sarah is buried in Machpelah.

¹ When Sarah was an hundred twenty and seven years old (^[a]so long lived she.)

² Then Sarah died in Kirjath Arba: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. And Abraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.

³ ¶ Then Abraham ^[b]rose up from the sight of his corpse, and talked with the ^[c]Hittites, saying,

⁴ I am a stranger, and a foreigner among you: give me a possession of burial with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.

⁵ Then the Hittites answered Abraham, saying unto him,

⁶ Hear us, my lord: thou art a prince ^[d]of God among us: in the chiefest of our sepulchers bury the dead: none of us shall forbid thee his sepulcher, but thou mayest bury thy dead therein.

⁷ Then Abraham stood up, and bowed himself before the people of the land of the Hittites.

⁸ And he communed with them, saying, If it be ^[e]your mind, that I shall bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and entreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar,

⁹ That he would give me the cave of ^[f]Machpelah, which he hath in the end of his field: that he would give it me for as much ^[g]money as it is worth, for a possession to bury in among you.

¹⁰ (For Ephron dwelt among the Hittites) Then Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience of all the Hittites that ^[h]went in at the gates of his city, saying,

¹¹ No, my Lord, hear me: the field give I thee and the cave that therein is, I give it thee: even in the presence of the sons of my people give I it thee to bury thy dead.

¹² Then Abraham ^[i]bowed himself before the people of the land,

¹³ And spake unto Ephron in the audience of the people of the country, saying, Seeing thou wilt give it, I pray thee, hear me, I will give the price of the field: receive it of me, and I will bury my dead there.

¹⁴ Ephron then answered Abraham, saying unto him,

¹⁵ My lord, hearken unto me: the land is worth four hundred ^[j]shekels of silver: what is that between me and thee? bury therefore thy dead.

¹⁶ So Abraham hearkened unto Ephron, and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named, in the audience of the Hittites, even four hundred silver shekels of current money among merchants.

¹⁷ ¶ So the field of Ephron which was in Machpelah, and over against Mamre, even the field and the cave that was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, which were in all the borders round about, was made sure

¹⁸ Unto Abraham for a possession, in the sight of the Hittites, even of all that ^[k]went in at the gates of his city.

¹⁹ And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah over against Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan.

²⁰ Thus the field, and the cave that is therein, was made sure unto Abraham for a possession of burial ^[l]by the Hittites.

¹ And ^[a]it came to pass that when Jesus had made an end of ^[b]commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in ^[c]their cities.

² ¶ ^(A)And when John heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, and said unto him,

³ Art thou he that should come, or shall we look for another?

⁴ And Jesus answering, said unto them, Go, and show John, what things ye hear and see.

⁵ The blind receive sight, and the halt do walk: the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, ^(B)and the poor receive the Gospel.

⁶ And blessed is he that shall not be offended in me.

^7 [d]And as they departed, Jesus began to speak unto the multitude of John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? a reed shaken with the wind?

⁸ But what went ye out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold they that wear soft clothing, are in kings’ houses.

⁹ But what went ye out to see? A Prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and more than a Prophet.

¹⁰ For this is he of whom it is written, ^(C)Behold, I send my messenger before thy face which shall prepare thy way before thee.

¹¹ Verily I say unto you, Among them which are begotten of women, arose there not a greater than John Baptist, notwithstanding, he that is the least in the ^[e]kingdom of heaven, is greater than he.

¹² And from ^(D)the time of John Baptist hitherto, the kingdom of God suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

¹³ For all the Prophets and the Law ^[f]prophesied unto John.

¹⁴ And if ye will receive it, this is ^(E)that Elijah, which was to come.

¹⁵ ¶ He that hath ears to hear let him hear.

^16 (F)[g]But whereunto shall I liken this generation? ^[h]It is like unto little children which sit in the markets, and call unto their fellows,

¹⁷ And say, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced, we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.

¹⁸ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.

¹⁹ The Son of men came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a glutton and a drinker of wine, a friend unto Publicans and sinners: ^[i]but ^[j]wisdom is justified of her children.

²⁰ ¶ ^(G)[k]Then began he to upbraid the cities, wherein most of his great works were done, because they repented not.

²¹ Woe be to thee Chorazin: Woe be to thee Bethsaida: for if the great works which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they had repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

²² But I say to you, It shall be easier for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.

²³ And thou Capernaum, which art lifted up unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the great works, which have been done in thee, had been done among them of Sodom, they had remained to this day.

²⁴ But I say unto you, that it shall be easier for them of the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

^25 (H)At that time Jesus answered and said, I give thee thanks, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise, and men of understanding, and hast ^[l]opened them unto babes.

²⁶ It is ^[m]so, O Father, because thy ^[n]good pleasure was such.

^27 (I)[o]All things are given unto me of my Father: and ^(J)no man knoweth the Son, but the Father: neither knoweth any man the Father, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.

²⁸ Come unto me, all ye that are weary and laden, and I will ease you.

²⁹ Take my yoke on you, and learn of me that I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find ^(K)rest unto your souls.

^30 (L)For my yoke is ^[p]easy, and my burden light.
