⁷ Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked^(A) and furious,^(B) because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in^[a] Israel^(C) by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done.^(D)

²⁴ About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant.”

Judah said, “Bring her out and have her burned to death!”^(A)

²⁹ “‘Do not degrade your daughter by making her a prostitute,^(A) or the land will turn to prostitution and be filled with wickedness.^(B)

¹⁷ No Israelite man^(A) or woman is to become a shrine prostitute.^{(B) 18} You must not bring the earnings of a female prostitute or of a male prostitute^[a] into the house of the Lord your God to pay any vow, because the Lord your God detests them both.^(C)

¹³ God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”^[a](A)
