When Jacob learned that Dinah, his daughter, had been defiled, his sons were in the countryside with the animals. So he remained silent until they returned.

Hamor, the father of Shechem, came to Jacob to speak to him. When the sons of Jacob returned from the countryside, they heard what had happened. They were furious and very indignant because he had done this outrage in Israel, sleeping with a daughter of Jacob. One did not do these things!

When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled,(A) his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home.

Then Shechem’s father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.(B) Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked(C) and furious,(D) because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in[a] Israel(E) by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done.(F)
