31 When the Lord saw that Leah was (A)hated, (B)he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren. 32 And Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben,[a] for she said, “Because the Lord (C)has looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me.” 33 She conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Because the Lord has heard that I am hated, he has given me this son also.” And she called his name Simeon.[b] 34 Again she conceived and bore a son, and said, “Now this time my husband will be (D)attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore his name was called Levi.[c] 35 And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” Therefore she called his name (E)Judah.[d] Then she ceased bearing.

33 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Because the Lord heard that I am not loved,(F) he gave me this one too.” So she named him Simeon.[b](G)

34 Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me,(H) because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.[c](I)

35 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” So she named him Judah.[d](J) Then she stopped having children.(K)

And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son. When Leah saw that she had ceased bearing children, she took her servant Zilpah and (C)gave her to Jacob as a wife. 10 Then Leah's servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son. 11 And Leah said, (D)“Good fortune has come!” so she called his name (E)Gad.[d] 12 Leah's servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. 13 And Leah said, “Happy am I! For women (F)have called me happy.” So she called his name Asher.[e]

14 In the days of wheat harvest Reuben went and found (G)mandrakes in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son's mandrakes.” 15 But she said to her, “Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son's mandrakes also?” Rachel said, “Then he may lie with you tonight in exchange for your son's mandrakes.” 16 When Jacob came from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must come in to me, for I have hired you with my son's mandrakes.” So he lay with her that night. 17 And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 Leah said, “God has given me my wages because I gave my servant to my husband.” So she called his name Issachar.[f]

19 And Leah conceived again, and she bore Jacob a sixth son. 20 Then Leah said, “God has endowed me with a good endowment; now my husband will honor me, because I have borne him six sons.” So she called his name (H)Zebulun.[g] 21 Afterward she bore a daughter and called her name Dinah.

22 Then God (I)remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and (J)opened her womb. 23 She conceived and bore a son and said, “God has taken away (K)my reproach.” 24 And she called his name Joseph,[h] saying, (L)“May the Lord add to me another son!”

Rachel’s servant Bilhah(D) conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. Then Rachel said, “I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won.”(E) So she named him Naphtali.[b](F)

When Leah(G) saw that she had stopped having children,(H) she took her servant Zilpah(I) and gave her to Jacob as a wife.(J) 10 Leah’s servant Zilpah(K) bore Jacob a son. 11 Then Leah said, “What good fortune!”[c] So she named him Gad.[d](L)

12 Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. 13 Then Leah said, “How happy I am! The women will call me(M) happy.”(N) So she named him Asher.[e](O)

14 During wheat harvest,(P) Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants,(Q) which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”

15 But she said to her, “Wasn’t it enough(R) that you took away my husband? Will you take my son’s mandrakes too?”

“Very well,” Rachel said, “he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes.”(S)

16 So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him. “You must sleep with me,” she said. “I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.”(T) So he slept with her that night.

17 God listened to Leah,(U) and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband.”(V) So she named him Issachar.[f](W)

19 Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. 20 Then Leah said, “God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor,(X) because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.[g](Y)

21 Some time later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.(Z)

22 Then God remembered Rachel;(AA) he listened to her(AB) and enabled her to conceive.(AC) 23 She became pregnant and gave birth to a son(AD) and said, “God has taken away my disgrace.”(AE) 24 She named him Joseph,[h](AF) and said, “May the Lord add to me another son.”(AG)
