The Prince and the Feasts

46 “Thus says the Lord God: (A)The gate of (B)the inner court that faces east shall be shut on the six working days, but on the Sabbath day it shall be opened, and (C)on the day of the new moon it shall be opened. (D)The prince shall enter by the vestibule of the gate from outside, and shall take his stand by (E)the post of the gate. (F)The priests shall offer his burnt offering and his peace offerings, and he shall worship at (G)the threshold of the gate. Then he shall go out, but the gate shall not be shut until evening. (H)The people of the land shall bow down at the entrance of that gate before the Lord on the Sabbaths and on the new moons. (I)The burnt offering that the prince offers to the Lord (J)on the Sabbath day shall be six lambs without blemish and a ram without blemish. And (K)the grain offering with the ram shall be an ephah,[a] and the grain offering with the lambs shall be (L)as much as he is able, together with a hin[b] of oil to each ephah. On the day of the new moon he shall offer a bull from the herd without blemish, and six lambs and a ram, which shall be without blemish. As a grain offering he shall provide an ephah with the bull and an ephah with the ram, and with the lambs (M)as much as he is able, together with a hin of oil to each ephah. (N)When the prince enters, he shall enter by the vestibule of the gate, and he shall go out by the same way.

(O)“When the people of the land (P)come before the Lord at the appointed feasts, he who enters by the north gate to worship shall go out by the south gate, and he who enters by the south gate shall go out by the north gate: no one shall return by way of the gate by which he entered, but each shall go out straight ahead. 10 When they enter, (Q)the prince shall enter with them, and when they go out, he shall go out.

11 “At the feasts and the appointed festivals, (R)the grain offering with a young bull shall be an ephah, and with a ram an ephah, and with the lambs (S)as much as one is able to give, together with a hin of oil to an ephah. 12 When the prince provides (T)a freewill offering, either a burnt offering or peace offerings as a freewill offering to the Lord, (U)the gate facing east shall be opened for him. And he shall offer his burnt offering or his peace offerings (V)as he does on the Sabbath day. Then he shall go out, and after he has gone out the gate shall be shut.

13 (W)“You shall provide a lamb a year old without blemish for a burnt offering to the Lord daily; morning by morning you shall provide it. 14 And (X)you shall provide a grain offering with it morning by morning, one sixth of an ephah, and one third of a hin of oil to moisten the flour, as a grain offering to the Lord. This is a perpetual statute. 15 Thus the lamb and the meal offering and the oil shall be provided, morning by morning, for (Y)a regular burnt offering.

16 “Thus says the Lord God: If the prince makes a gift to any of his sons as his inheritance, it shall belong to his sons. It is their property by inheritance. 17 But if he makes a gift (Z)out of his inheritance to one of his servants, it shall be his to (AA)the year of liberty. Then it shall revert to the prince; surely it is his inheritance—it shall belong to his sons. 18 (AB)The prince shall not take any of the inheritance of the people, (AC)thrusting them out of their property. He shall give his sons their inheritance out of his own property, so that none of my people shall be (AD)scattered from his property.”

Boiling Places for Offerings

19 Then he brought me through the entrance, which was (AE)at the side of the gate, to the north row of (AF)the holy chambers for the priests, and behold, a place was there at the extreme western end of them. 20 And he said to me, “This is the place where the priests (AG)shall boil the guilt offering and the sin offering, and where (AH)they shall bake the grain offering, in order not to bring them out into the outer court and so (AI)transmit holiness to the people.”

21 Then he brought me out to the outer court and led me around to the four corners of the court. And behold, in each corner of the court there was another court— 22 in the four corners of the court were small[c] courts, forty cubits[d] long and thirty broad; the four were of the same size. 23 On the inside, around each of the four courts was a row of masonry, with hearths made at the bottom of the rows all around. 24 Then he said to me, “These are the kitchens where those who (AJ)minister at the temple (AK)shall boil the sacrifices of the people.”

Water Flowing from the Temple

47 Then he brought me back to (AL)the door of the temple, and behold, (AM)water was issuing from below (AN)the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was flowing down from below the south end of the threshold of the temple, south of (AO)the altar. Then he brought me out by way of (AP)the north gate and led me around on the outside to (AQ)the outer gate that faces toward the east; and behold, the water was trickling out on the south side.

Going on eastward with a measuring line in his hand, (AR)the man measured a thousand cubits,[e] and then led me through the water, and it was ankle-deep. Again he measured a thousand, and led me through the water, and it was knee-deep. Again he measured a thousand, and led me through the water, and it was waist-deep. Again he measured a thousand, and it was a river that I could not pass through, for the water had risen. It was deep enough to swim in, a river that could not be passed through. And he said to me, (AS)“Son of man, (AT)have you seen this?”

Then he led me back to the bank of the river. As I went back, I saw on the bank of the river (AU)very many trees on the one side and on the other. And he said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into (AV)the Arabah, and enters the sea;[f] when the water flows into (AW)the sea, the water will become fresh.[g] And wherever the river goes,[h] every living creature that swarms will live, and there will be very many fish. For this water goes there, that the waters of the sea[i] may become fresh; so everything will live where the river goes. 10 Fishermen will stand beside the sea. From (AX)Engedi to (AY)Eneglaim it will be a place for the spreading of nets. Its fish will be of very many kinds, like the fish of (AZ)the Great Sea.[j] 11 But its swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they are to be left for salt. 12 And on the banks, (BA)on both sides of the river, there will grow (BB)all kinds of trees for food. (BC)Their leaves will not wither, nor their fruit fail, (BD)but they will bear fresh fruit every month, because the water for them flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and (BE)their leaves for healing.”

Division of the Land

13 Thus says the Lord God: “This is the boundary[k] by which (BF)you shall divide the land for inheritance among the twelve tribes of Israel. (BG)Joseph shall have two portions. 14 And you shall divide equally what (BH)I swore (BI)to give to your fathers. (BJ)This land shall fall to you as your inheritance.

15 “This shall be the boundary of the land: On the north side, from (BK)the Great Sea (BL)by way of Hethlon to Lebo-hamath, and on to (BM)Zedad,[l] 16 (BN)Berothah, Sibraim (which lies on the border between (BO)Damascus and (BP)Hamath), as far as Hazer-hatticon, which is on the border of Hauran. 17 So the boundary shall run from the sea to (BQ)Hazar-enan, which is on the northern border of Damascus, with the border of Hamath to the north.[m] This shall be the north side.[n]

18 “On the east side, the boundary shall run between Hauran and Damascus; along the Jordan between (BR)Gilead and the land of Israel; to (BS)the eastern sea and as far as Tamar.[o] This shall be the east side.

19 “On the south side, it shall run from (BT)Tamar as far as (BU)the waters of Meribah-kadesh, from there along (BV)the Brook of Egypt[p] to (BW)the Great Sea. This shall be the south side.

20 “On the west side, the Great Sea shall be the boundary to a point (BX)opposite Lebo-hamath. This shall be the west side.

21 (BY)“So you shall divide this land among you according to the tribes of Israel. 22 (BZ)You shall allot it as an inheritance for yourselves and (CA)for the sojourners who reside among you and have had children among you. (CB)They shall be to you as native-born children of Israel. With you they shall be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel. 23 In whatever tribe the sojourner resides, there you shall assign him his inheritance, declares the Lord God.

48 “These are the names of the tribes: Beginning at the northern extreme, beside (CC)the way of Hethlon (CD)to Lebo-hamath, as far as (CE)Hazar-enan (which is on the northern border of (CF)Damascus over against Hamath), and extending[q] from the east side to the west,[r] (CG)Dan, one portion. Adjoining the territory of Dan, from the east side to the west, (CH)Asher, one portion. Adjoining the territory of Asher, from the east side to the west, (CI)Naphtali, one portion. Adjoining the territory of Naphtali, from the east side to the west, Manasseh, one portion. Adjoining the territory of Manasseh, from the east side to the west, Ephraim, one portion. Adjoining the territory of Ephraim, from the east side to the west, Reuben, one portion. Adjoining the territory of Reuben, from the east side to the west, Judah, one portion.

“Adjoining the territory of Judah, from the east side to the west, shall be (CJ)the portion which you shall set apart, 25,000 cubits[s] in breadth, and in length equal to one of the tribal portions, from the east side to the west, with (CK)the sanctuary in the midst of it. The portion that you shall set apart for the Lord shall be 25,000 cubits in length, and 20,000[t] in breadth. 10 (CL)These shall be the allotments of the holy portion: the priests shall have an allotment measuring 25,000 cubits on the northern side, 10,000 cubits in breadth on the western side, 10,000 in breadth on the eastern side, and 25,000 in length on the southern side, with the sanctuary of the Lord in the midst of it. 11 This shall be for (CM)the consecrated priests, (CN)the sons of Zadok, who kept my charge, who did not go astray when the people of Israel went astray, (CO)as the Levites did. 12 And it shall belong to them as a special portion from the holy portion of the land, a most holy place, adjoining the territory of the Levites. 13 (CP)And alongside the territory of the priests, the Levites shall have an allotment 25,000 cubits in length and 10,000 in breadth. The whole length shall be 25,000 cubits and the breadth 20,000.[u] 14 They (CQ)shall not sell or exchange any of it. They shall not alienate (CR)this choice portion of the land, for it is holy to the Lord.

15 (CS)“The remainder, 5,000 cubits in breadth and 25,000 in length, shall be (CT)for common use for the city, for dwellings and for (CU)open country. In the midst of it shall be the city, 16 and these shall be its measurements: (CV)the north side 4,500 cubits, the south side 4,500, the east side 4,500, and the west side 4,500. 17 And the city shall have open land: on the north 250 cubits, on the south 250, on the east 250, and on the west 250. 18 The remainder of the length alongside the holy portion shall be 10,000 cubits to the east, and 10,000 to the west, and it shall be alongside the holy portion. (CW)Its produce shall be food for the workers of the city. 19 And the workers of the city, from all the tribes of Israel, shall till it. 20 The whole portion that (CX)you shall set apart shall be 25,000 cubits square, that is, the holy portion together with the property of the city.

21 (CY)“What remains on both sides of the holy portion and of the property of the city shall belong to the prince. Extending from the 25,000 cubits of the holy portion to the east border, and westward from the 25,000 cubits to the west border, parallel to the tribal portions, it shall belong to the prince. (CZ)The holy portion with the sanctuary of the temple shall be in its midst. 22 It shall be separate from the property of the Levites and the property of the city, which are in the midst of that which belongs to the prince. The portion of the prince shall lie between the territory of Judah and the territory of Benjamin.

23 “As for the rest of the tribes: from the east side to the west, Benjamin, one portion. 24 Adjoining the territory of Benjamin, from the east side to the west, Simeon, one portion. 25 Adjoining the territory of Simeon, from the east side to the west, Issachar, one portion. 26 Adjoining the territory of Issachar, from the east side to the west, Zebulun, one portion. 27 Adjoining the territory of Zebulun, from the east side to the west, Gad, one portion. 28 And adjoining the territory of Gad to the south, the boundary shall run (DA)from Tamar to the waters of (DB)Meribah-kadesh, from there along the Brook of Egypt[v] to (DC)the Great Sea.[w] 29 This is the land that (DD)you shall allot as an inheritance among the tribes of Israel, and these are their portions, declares the Lord God.

The Gates of the City

30 “These shall be (DE)the exits of the city: On the north side, which is to be (DF)4,500 cubits by measure, 31 (DG)three gates, the gate of (DH)Reuben, the gate of (DI)Judah, and the gate of (DJ)Levi, the gates of the city being named after the tribes of Israel. 32 On the east side, which is to be 4,500 cubits, three gates, the gate of Joseph, the gate of Benjamin, and the gate of Dan. 33 On the south side, which is to be 4,500 cubits by measure, three gates, the gate of Simeon, the gate of Issachar, and the gate of Zebulun. 34 On the west side, which is to be 4,500 cubits, three gates,[x] the gate of Gad, the gate of Asher, and the gate of Naphtali. 35 The circumference of the city shall be 18,000 cubits. And (DK)the name of the city from that time on shall be, (DL)The Lord Is There.”

46 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: The gate of the inner court(A) facing east(B) is to be shut on the six working days, but on the Sabbath day and on the day of the New Moon(C) it is to be opened. The prince is to enter from the outside through the portico(D) of the gateway and stand by the gatepost. The priests are to sacrifice his burnt offering(E) and his fellowship offerings. He is to bow down in worship at the threshold of the gateway and then go out, but the gate will not be shut until evening.(F) On the Sabbaths(G) and New Moons the people of the land are to worship in the presence of the Lord at the entrance of that gateway.(H) The burnt offering the prince brings to the Lord on the Sabbath day is to be six male lambs and a ram, all without defect. The grain offering given with the ram is to be an ephah,[a] and the grain offering with the lambs is to be as much as he pleases, along with a hin[b] of olive oil for each ephah.(I) On the day of the New Moon(J) he is to offer a young bull, six lambs and a ram, all without defect.(K) He is to provide as a grain offering one ephah with the bull, one ephah with the ram, and with the lambs as much as he wants to give, along with a hin of oil for each ephah.(L) When the prince enters, he is to go in through the portico(M) of the gateway, and he is to come out the same way.(N)

“‘When the people of the land come before the Lord at the appointed festivals,(O) whoever enters by the north gate to worship is to go out the south gate; and whoever enters by the south gate is to go out the north gate. No one is to return through the gate by which they entered, but each is to go out the opposite gate. 10 The prince is to be among them, going in when they go in and going out when they go out.(P) 11 At the feasts and the appointed festivals, the grain offering is to be an ephah with a bull, an ephah with a ram, and with the lambs as much as he pleases, along with a hin of oil for each ephah.(Q)

12 “‘When the prince provides(R) a freewill offering(S) to the Lord—whether a burnt offering or fellowship offerings—the gate facing east is to be opened for him. He shall offer his burnt offering or his fellowship offerings as he does on the Sabbath day. Then he shall go out, and after he has gone out, the gate will be shut.(T)

13 “‘Every day you are to provide a year-old lamb without defect for a burnt offering to the Lord; morning by morning(U) you shall provide it.(V) 14 You are also to provide with it morning by morning a grain offering, consisting of a sixth of an ephah[c] with a third of a hin[d] of oil(W) to moisten the flour. The presenting of this grain offering to the Lord is a lasting ordinance.(X) 15 So the lamb and the grain offering and the oil shall be provided morning by morning for a regular(Y) burnt offering.(Z)

16 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: If the prince makes a gift from his inheritance to one of his sons, it will also belong to his descendants; it is to be their property by inheritance.(AA) 17 If, however, he makes a gift from his inheritance to one of his servants, the servant may keep it until the year of freedom;(AB) then it will revert to the prince. His inheritance belongs to his sons only; it is theirs. 18 The prince must not take(AC) any of the inheritance(AD) of the people, driving them off their property. He is to give his sons their inheritance out of his own property, so that not one of my people will be separated from their property.’”

19 Then the man brought me through the entrance(AE) at the side of the gate to the sacred rooms facing north,(AF) which belonged to the priests, and showed me a place at the western end. 20 He said to me, “This is the place where the priests are to cook the guilt offering and the sin offering[e] and bake the grain offering, to avoid bringing them into the outer court and consecrating(AG) the people.”(AH)

21 He then brought me to the outer court and led me around to its four corners, and I saw in each corner another court. 22 In the four corners of the outer court were enclosed[f] courts, forty cubits long and thirty cubits wide;[g] each of the courts in the four corners was the same size. 23 Around the inside of each of the four courts was a ledge of stone, with places for fire built all around under the ledge. 24 He said to me, “These are the kitchens where those who minister at the temple are to cook the sacrifices of the people.”

The River From the Temple

47 The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water(AI) coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar.(AJ) He then brought me out through the north gate(AK) and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side.

As the man went eastward with a measuring line(AL) in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits[h] and then led me through water that was ankle-deep. He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist. He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river(AM) that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in—a river that no one could cross.(AN) He asked me, “Son of man, do you see this?”

Then he led me back to the bank of the river. When I arrived there, I saw a great number of trees on each side of the river.(AO) He said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah,[i](AP) where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh.(AQ) Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live.(AR) 10 Fishermen(AS) will stand along the shore; from En Gedi(AT) to En Eglaim there will be places for spreading nets.(AU) The fish will be of many kinds(AV)—like the fish of the Mediterranean Sea.(AW) 11 But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt.(AX) 12 Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river.(AY) Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit(AZ) fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary(BA) flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.(BB)

The Boundaries of the Land

13 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “These are the boundaries(BC) of the land that you will divide among the twelve tribes of Israel as their inheritance, with two portions for Joseph.(BD) 14 You are to divide it equally among them. Because I swore with uplifted hand to give it to your ancestors, this land will become your inheritance.(BE)

15 “This is to be the boundary of the land:(BF)

“On the north side it will run from the Mediterranean Sea(BG) by the Hethlon road(BH) past Lebo Hamath to Zedad, 16 Berothah[j](BI) and Sibraim (which lies on the border between Damascus and Hamath),(BJ) as far as Hazer Hattikon, which is on the border of Hauran. 17 The boundary will extend from the sea to Hazar Enan,[k] along the northern border of Damascus, with the border of Hamath to the north. This will be the northern boundary.(BK)

18 “On the east side the boundary will run between Hauran and Damascus, along the Jordan between Gilead and the land of Israel, to the Dead Sea and as far as Tamar.[l] This will be the eastern boundary.(BL)

19 “On the south side it will run from Tamar as far as the waters of Meribah Kadesh,(BM) then along the Wadi of Egypt(BN) to the Mediterranean Sea.(BO) This will be the southern boundary.

20 “On the west side, the Mediterranean Sea will be the boundary to a point opposite Lebo Hamath.(BP) This will be the western boundary.(BQ)

21 “You are to distribute this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. 22 You are to allot it as an inheritance(BR) for yourselves and for the foreigners(BS) residing among you and who have children. You are to consider them as native-born Israelites; along with you they are to be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.(BT) 23 In whatever tribe a foreigner resides, there you are to give them their inheritance,” declares the Sovereign Lord.(BU)

The Division of the Land

48 “These are the tribes, listed by name: At the northern frontier, Dan(BV) will have one portion; it will follow the Hethlon road(BW) to Lebo Hamath;(BX) Hazar Enan and the northern border of Damascus next to Hamath will be part of its border from the east side to the west side.

“Asher(BY) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Dan from east to west.

“Naphtali(BZ) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Asher from east to west.

“Manasseh(CA) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Naphtali from east to west.

“Ephraim(CB) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Manasseh(CC) from east to west.(CD)

“Reuben(CE) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Ephraim from east to west.

“Judah(CF) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Reuben from east to west.

“Bordering the territory of Judah from east to west will be the portion you are to present as a special gift. It will be 25,000 cubits[m] wide, and its length from east to west will equal one of the tribal portions; the sanctuary will be in the center of it.(CG)

“The special portion you are to offer to the Lord will be 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits[n] wide.(CH) 10 This will be the sacred portion for the priests. It will be 25,000 cubits long on the north side, 10,000 cubits wide on the west side, 10,000 cubits wide on the east side and 25,000 cubits long on the south side. In the center of it will be the sanctuary of the Lord.(CI) 11 This will be for the consecrated priests, the Zadokites,(CJ) who were faithful in serving me(CK) and did not go astray as the Levites did when the Israelites went astray.(CL) 12 It will be a special gift to them from the sacred portion of the land, a most holy portion, bordering the territory of the Levites.

13 “Alongside the territory of the priests, the Levites will have an allotment 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide. Its total length will be 25,000 cubits and its width 10,000 cubits.(CM) 14 They must not sell or exchange any of it. This is the best of the land and must not pass into other hands, because it is holy to the Lord.(CN)

15 “The remaining area, 5,000 cubits[o] wide and 25,000 cubits long, will be for the common use of the city, for houses and for pastureland. The city will be in the center of it 16 and will have these measurements: the north side 4,500 cubits,[p] the south side 4,500 cubits, the east side 4,500 cubits, and the west side 4,500 cubits.(CO) 17 The pastureland for the city will be 250 cubits[q] on the north, 250 cubits on the south, 250 cubits on the east, and 250 cubits on the west. 18 What remains of the area, bordering on the sacred portion and running the length of it, will be 10,000 cubits on the east side and 10,000 cubits on the west side. Its produce will supply food for the workers of the city.(CP) 19 The workers from the city who farm it will come from all the tribes of Israel. 20 The entire portion will be a square, 25,000 cubits on each side. As a special gift you will set aside the sacred portion, along with the property of the city.

21 “What remains on both sides of the area formed by the sacred portion and the property of the city will belong to the prince. It will extend eastward from the 25,000 cubits of the sacred portion to the eastern border, and westward from the 25,000 cubits to the western border. Both these areas running the length of the tribal portions will belong to the prince, and the sacred portion with the temple sanctuary will be in the center of them.(CQ) 22 So the property of the Levites and the property of the city will lie in the center of the area that belongs to the prince. The area belonging to the prince will lie between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin.

23 “As for the rest of the tribes: Benjamin(CR) will have one portion; it will extend from the east side to the west side.

24 “Simeon(CS) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Benjamin from east to west.

25 “Issachar(CT) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Simeon from east to west.

26 “Zebulun(CU) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Issachar from east to west.

27 “Gad(CV) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Zebulun from east to west.

28 “The southern boundary of Gad will run south from Tamar(CW) to the waters of Meribah Kadesh, then along the Wadi of Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea.(CX)
