15 I have set the point of the sword against all their gates,
That the heart may melt and many may stumble.
Ah! (A)It is made bright;
It is grasped for slaughter:

16 “Swords(B)[a] at the ready!
Thrust right!
Set your blade!
Thrust left—
Wherever your [b]edge is ordered!

17 “I also will (C)beat My fists together,
And (D)I will cause My fury to rest;
I, the Lord, have spoken.”

18 The word of the Lord came to me again, saying: 19 “And son of man, appoint for yourself two ways for the sword of the king of Babylon to go; both of them shall go from the same land. Make a sign; put it at the head of the road to the city. 20 Appoint a road for the sword to go to (E)Rabbah of the Ammonites, and to Judah, into fortified Jerusalem. 21 For the king of Babylon stands at the parting of the road, at the fork of the two roads, to use divination: he shakes the arrows, he consults the [c]images, he looks at the liver. 22 In his right hand is the divination for Jerusalem: to set up battering rams, to call for a slaughter, to (F)lift the voice with shouting, (G)to set battering rams against the gates, to heap up a siege mound, and to build a wall. 23 And it will be to them like a false divination in the eyes of those who (H)have sworn oaths with them; but he will bring their iniquity to remembrance, that they may be taken.

15 So that hearts may melt with fear(A)
    and the fallen be many,
I have stationed the sword for slaughter[a]
    at all their gates.
Look! It is forged to strike like lightning,
    it is grasped for slaughter.(B)
16 Slash to the right, you sword,
    then to the left,
    wherever your blade is turned.
17 I too will strike my hands(C) together,
    and my wrath(D) will subside.
I the Lord have spoken.(E)

18 The word of the Lord came to me: 19 “Son of man, mark out two roads for the sword(F) of the king of Babylon to take, both starting from the same country. Make a signpost(G) where the road branches off to the city. 20 Mark out one road for the sword to come against Rabbah of the Ammonites(H) and another against Judah and fortified Jerusalem. 21 For the king of Babylon will stop at the fork in the road, at the junction of the two roads, to seek an omen: He will cast lots(I) with arrows, he will consult his idols,(J) he will examine the liver.(K) 22 Into his right hand will come the lot for Jerusalem, where he is to set up battering rams, to give the command to slaughter, to sound the battle cry,(L) to set battering rams against the gates, to build a ramp(M) and to erect siege works.(N) 23 It will seem like a false omen to those who have sworn allegiance to him, but he will remind(O) them of their guilt(P) and take them captive.
