Exodus 33:14-34:10
New International Version
14 The Lord replied, “My Presence(A) will go with you, and I will give you rest.”(B)
15 Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence(C) does not go with us, do not send us up from here. 16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us?(D) What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?”(E)
17 And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked,(F) because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.”(G)
18 Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.”(H)
19 And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass(I) in front of you, and I will proclaim my name,(J) the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.(K) 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see(L) me and live.”
21 Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock(M) and cover you with my hand(N) until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”
The New Stone Tablets
34 The Lord said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones,(O) and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets,(P) which you broke.(Q) 2 Be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai.(R) Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. 3 No one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain;(S) not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain.”
4 So Moses chiseled(T) out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the Lord had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands.(U) 5 Then the Lord came down in the cloud(V) and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord.(W) 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate(X) and gracious God, slow to anger,(Y) abounding in love(Z) and faithfulness,(AA) 7 maintaining love to thousands,(AB) and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.(AC) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished;(AD) he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”(AE)
8 Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. 9 “Lord,” he said, “if I have found favor(AF) in your eyes, then let the Lord go with us.(AG) Although this is a stiff-necked(AH) people, forgive our wickedness and our sin,(AI) and take us as your inheritance.”(AJ)
10 Then the Lord said: “I am making a covenant(AK) with you. Before all your people I will do wonders(AL) never before done in any nation in all the world.(AM) The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the Lord, will do for you.
