23 When they came to (A)Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah.[a] 24 And the people (B)grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” 25 And he (C)cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log,[b] and he (D)threw it into the water, and the water became sweet.

There the Lord[c] made for them a statute and a rule, and there he (E)tested them,

25 Then Moses cried out(D) to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw(E) it into the water, and the water became fit to drink.

There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test.(F)
