The Vanity of Life

The words of the Preacher, the son of David, (A)king in Jerusalem.

“Vanity(B)[a] of vanities,” says the Preacher;
“Vanity of vanities, (C)all is vanity.”

(D)What profit has a man from all his labor
In which he [b]toils under the sun?
One generation passes away, and another generation comes;
(E)But the earth abides forever.
(F)The sun also rises, and the sun goes down,
And [c]hastens to the place where it arose.
(G)The wind goes toward the south,
And turns around to the north;
The wind whirls about continually,
And comes again on its circuit.
(H)All the rivers run into the sea,
Yet the sea is not full;
To the place from which the rivers come,
There they return again.
All things are [d]full of labor;
Man cannot express it.
(I)The eye is not satisfied with seeing,
Nor the ear filled with hearing.

(J)That which has been is what will be,
That which is done is what will be done,
And there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Is there anything of which it may be said,
“See, this is new”?
It has already been in ancient times before us.
11 There is (K)no remembrance of former things,
Nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come
By those who will come after.

The Grief of Wisdom

12 I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 And I set my heart to seek and (L)search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven; (M)this burdensome task God has given to the sons of man, by which they may be [e]exercised. 14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

15 (N)What is crooked cannot be made straight,
And what is lacking cannot be numbered.

16 I communed with my heart, saying, “Look, I have attained greatness, and have gained (O)more wisdom than all who were before me in Jerusalem. My heart has [f]understood great wisdom and knowledge.” 17 (P)And I set my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is grasping for the wind.

18 For (Q)in much wisdom is much grief,
And he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.

The Vanity of Pleasure(R)

I said (S)in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with (T)mirth; [g]therefore enjoy pleasure”; but surely, (U)this also was vanity. I said of laughter—“Madness!”; and of mirth, “What does it accomplish?” (V)I searched in my heart how [h]to gratify my flesh with wine, while guiding my heart with wisdom, and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was (W)good for the sons of men to do under heaven all the days of their lives.

I made my works great, I built myself (X)houses, and planted myself vineyards. I made myself gardens and orchards, and I planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. I made myself water pools from which to [i]water the growing trees of the grove. I acquired male and female servants, and had [j]servants born in my house. Yes, I had greater possessions of herds and flocks than all who were in Jerusalem before me. (Y)I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the special treasures of kings and of the provinces. I acquired male and female singers, the delights of the sons of men, and [k]musical instruments of all kinds.

(Z)So I became great and [l]excelled (AA)more than all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me.

10 Whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them.
I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure,
For my heart rejoiced in all my labor;
And (AB)this was my [m]reward from all my labor.
11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done
And on the labor in which I had toiled;
And indeed all was (AC)vanity and grasping for the wind.
There was no profit under the sun.

The End of the Wise and the Fool

12 Then I turned myself to consider wisdom (AD)and madness and folly;
For what can the man do who succeeds the king?—
Only what he has already (AE)done.
13 Then I saw that wisdom (AF)excels folly
As light excels darkness.
14 (AG)The wise man’s eyes are in his head,
But the fool walks in darkness.
Yet I myself perceived
That (AH)the same event happens to them all.

15 So I said in my heart,
“As it happens to the fool,
It also happens to me,
And why was I then more wise?”
Then I said in my heart,
“This also is vanity.”
16 For there is (AI)no more remembrance of the wise than of the fool forever,
Since all that now is will be forgotten in the days to come.
And how does a wise man die?
As the fool!

17 Therefore I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

18 Then I hated all my labor in which I had toiled under the sun, because (AJ)I must leave it to the man who will come after me. 19 And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will rule over all my labor in which I toiled and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity. 20 Therefore I turned my heart and despaired of all the labor in which I had toiled under the sun. 21 For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, knowledge, and skill; yet he must leave his [n]heritage to a man who has not labored for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. 22 (AK)For what has man for all his labor, and for the striving of his heart with which he has toiled under the sun? 23 For all his days are (AL)sorrowful, and his work burdensome; even in the night his heart takes no rest. This also is vanity.

24 (AM)Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God. 25 For who can eat, or who can have enjoyment, [o]more than I? 26 For God gives (AN)wisdom and knowledge and joy to a man who is good in His sight; but to the sinner He gives the work of gathering and collecting, that (AO)he may give to him who is good before God. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

Everything Has Its Time

To everything there is a season,
A (AP)time for every purpose under heaven:

A time [p]to be born,
And (AQ)a time to die;
A time to plant,
And a time to pluck what is planted;
A time to kill,
And a time to heal;
A time to break down,
And a time to build up;
A time to (AR)weep,
And a time to laugh;
A time to mourn,
And a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones,
And a time to gather stones;
(AS)A time to embrace,
And a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to gain,
And a time to lose;
A time to keep,
And a time to throw away;
A time to tear,
And a time to sew;
(AT)A time to keep silence,
And a time to (AU)speak;
A time to love,
And a time to (AV)hate;
A time of war,
And a time of peace.

The God-Given Task

(AW)What profit has the worker from that in which he labors? 10 (AX)I have seen the God-given task with which the sons of men are to be occupied. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that (AY)no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.

12 I know that nothing is (AZ)better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives, 13 and also that (BA)every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor—it is the gift of God.

14 I know that whatever God does,
It shall be forever.
(BB)Nothing can be added to it,
And nothing taken from it.
God does it, that men should fear before Him.
15 (BC)That which is has already been,
And what is to be has already been;
And God [q]requires an account of [r]what is past.

Injustice Seems to Prevail

16 Moreover (BD)I saw under the sun:

In the place of [s]judgment,
Wickedness was there;
And in the place of righteousness,
[t]Iniquity was there.

17 I said in my heart,

(BE)“God shall judge the righteous and the wicked,
For there is a time there for every [u]purpose and for every work.”

18 I said in my heart, “Concerning the condition of the sons of men, God tests them, that they may see that they themselves are like animals.” 19 (BF)For what happens to the sons of men also happens to animals; one thing befalls them: as one dies, so dies the other. Surely, they all have one breath; man has no advantage over animals, for all is vanity. 20 All go to one place: (BG)all are from the dust, and all return to dust. 21 (BH)Who[v] knows the spirit of the sons of men, which goes upward, and the spirit of the animal, which goes down to the earth? 22 (BI)So I perceived that nothing is better than that a man should rejoice in his own works, for (BJ)that is his [w]heritage. (BK)For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?

The Uselessness of Selfish Toil

Then I returned and considered all the (BL)oppression that is done under the sun:

And look! The tears of the oppressed,
But they have no comforter—
[x]On the side of their oppressors there is power,
But they have no comforter.
(BM)Therefore I praised the dead who were already dead,
More than the living who are still alive.
(BN)Yet, better than both is he who has never existed,
Who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

The Vanity of Selfish Toil

Again, I saw that for all toil and every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

(BO)The fool folds his hands
And consumes his own flesh.
(BP)Better a handful with quietness
Than both hands full, together with toil and grasping for the wind.

Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun:

There is one alone, without [y]companion:
He has neither son nor brother.
Yet there is no end to all his labors,
Nor is his (BQ)eye satisfied with riches.
But (BR)he never asks,
“For whom do I toil and deprive myself of (BS)good?”
This also is vanity and a [z]grave misfortune.

The Value of a Friend

Two are better than one,
Because they have a good reward for their labor.
10 For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.
But woe to him who is alone when he falls,
For he has no one to help him up.
11 Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm;
But how can one be warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.
And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Popularity Passes Away

13 Better a poor and wise youth
Than an old and foolish king who will be admonished no more.
14 For he comes out of prison to be king,
Although [aa]he was born poor in his kingdom.
15 I saw all the living who walk under the sun;
They were with the second youth who stands in his place.
16 There was no end of all the people [ab]over whom he was made king;
Yet those who come afterward will not rejoice in him.
Surely this also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

Fear God, Keep Your Vows

Walk (BT)prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather (BU)than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil.

Do not be (BV)rash with your mouth,
And let not your heart utter anything hastily before God.
For God is in heaven, and you on earth;
Therefore let your words (BW)be few.
For a dream comes through much activity,
And (BX)a fool’s voice is known by his many words.

(BY)When you make a vow to God, do not delay to (BZ)pay it;
For He has no pleasure in fools.
Pay what you have vowed—
(CA)Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.

Do not let your (CB)mouth cause your flesh to sin, (CC)nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your [ac]excuse and destroy the work of your hands? For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity. But (CD)fear God.

The Vanity of Gain and Honor

If you (CE)see the oppression of the poor, and the violent [ad]perversion of justice and righteousness in a province, do not marvel at the matter; for (CF)high official watches over high official, and higher officials are over them.

Moreover the profit of the land is for all; even the king is served from the field.

10 He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver;
Nor he who loves abundance, with increase.
This also is vanity.

11 When goods increase,
They increase who eat them;
So what profit have the owners
Except to see them with their eyes?

12 The sleep of a laboring man is sweet,
Whether he eats little or much;
But the abundance of the rich will not permit him to sleep.

13 (CG)There is a severe evil which I have seen under the sun:
Riches kept for their owner to his hurt.
14 But those riches perish through [ae]misfortune;
When he begets a son, there is nothing in his hand.
15 (CH)As he came from his mother’s womb, naked shall he return,
To go as he came;
And he shall take nothing from his labor
Which he may carry away in his hand.

16 And this also is a severe evil—
Just exactly as he came, so shall he go.
And (CI)what profit has he (CJ)who has labored for the wind?
17 All his days (CK)he also eats in darkness,
And he has much sorrow and sickness and anger.

18 Here is what I have seen: (CL)It is good and fitting for one to eat and drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labor in which he toils under the sun all the days of his life which God gives him; (CM)for it is his [af]heritage. 19 As for (CN)every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given him power to eat of it, to receive his [ag]heritage and rejoice in his labor—this is the (CO)gift of God. 20 For he will not dwell unduly on the days of his life, because God keeps him busy with the joy of his heart.

Wealth Is Not the Goal of Life

There(CP) is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men: A man to whom God has given riches and wealth and honor, (CQ)so that he lacks nothing for himself of all he desires; (CR)yet God does not give him power to eat of it, but a foreigner consumes it. This is vanity, and it is an evil [ah]affliction.

If a man begets a hundred children and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul is not satisfied with goodness, or (CS)indeed he has no burial, I say that (CT)a [ai]stillborn child is better than he— for it comes in vanity and departs in darkness, and its name is covered with darkness. Though it has not seen the sun or known anything, this has more rest than that man, even if he lives a thousand years twice—but has not seen goodness. Do not all go to one (CU)place?

(CV)All the labor of man is for his mouth,
And yet the soul is not satisfied.
For what more has the wise man than the fool?
What does the poor man have,
Who knows how to walk before the living?
Better is [aj]the (CW)sight of the eyes than the wandering of [ak]desire.
This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

10 Whatever one is, he has been named (CX)already,
For it is known that he is man;
(CY)And he cannot contend with Him who is mightier than he.
11 Since there are many things that increase vanity,
How is man the better?

12 For who knows what is good for man in life, [al]all the days of his [am]vain life which he passes like (CZ)a shadow? (DA)Who can tell a man what will happen after him under the sun?

The Value of Practical Wisdom

A (DB)good name is better than precious ointment,
And the day of death than the day of one’s (DC)birth;
Better to go to the house of mourning
Than to go to the house of feasting,
For that is the end of all men;
And the living will take it to (DD)heart.
[an]Sorrow is better than laughter,
(DE)For by a sad countenance the heart is made [ao]better.
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,
But the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

(DF)It is better to [ap]hear the rebuke of the wise
Than for a man to hear the song of fools.
(DG)For like the [aq]crackling of thorns under a pot,
So is the laughter of the fool.
This also is vanity.
Surely oppression destroys a wise man’s reason,
(DH)And a bribe [ar]debases the heart.

The end of a thing is better than its beginning;
(DI)The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
(DJ)Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry,
For anger rests in the bosom of fools.
10 Do not say,
“Why were the former days better than these?”
For you do not inquire wisely concerning this.

11 Wisdom is good with an inheritance,
And profitable (DK)to those who see the sun.
12 For wisdom is [as]a (DL)defense as money is a defense,
But the [at]excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives (DM)life to those who have it.

13 Consider the work of God;
For (DN)who can make straight what He has made crooked?
14 (DO)In the day of prosperity be joyful,
But in the day of adversity consider:
Surely God has appointed the one [au]as well as the other,
So that man can find out nothing that will come after him.

15 I have seen everything in my days of vanity:

(DP)There is a just man who perishes in his righteousness,
And there is a wicked man who prolongs life in his wickedness.

16 (DQ)Do not be overly righteous,
(DR)Nor be overly wise:
Why should you destroy yourself?
17 Do not be overly wicked,
Nor be foolish:
(DS)Why should you die before your time?
18 It is good that you grasp this,
And also not remove your hand from the other;
For he who (DT)fears God will [av]escape them all.

19 (DU)Wisdom strengthens the wise
More than ten rulers of the city.

20 (DV)For there is not a just man on earth who does good
And does not sin.

21 Also do not take to heart everything people say,
Lest you hear your servant cursing you.
22 For many times, also, your own heart has known
That even you have cursed others.

23 All this I have [aw]proved by wisdom.
(DW)I said, “I will be wise”;
But it was far from me.
24 (DX)As for that which is far off and (DY)exceedingly deep,
Who can find it out?
25 (DZ)I applied my heart to know,
To search and seek out wisdom and the reason of things,
To know the wickedness of folly,
Even of foolishness and madness.
26 (EA)And I find more bitter than death
The woman whose heart is snares and nets,
Whose hands are fetters.
[ax]He who pleases God shall escape from her,
But the sinner shall be trapped by her.

27 “Here is what I have found,” says (EB)the Preacher,
Adding one thing to the other to find out the reason,
28 Which my soul still seeks but I cannot find:
(EC)One man among a thousand I have found,
But a woman among all these I have not found.
29 Truly, this only I have found:
(ED)That God made man upright,
But (EE)they have sought out many schemes.”

Obey Authorities for God’s Sake

Who is like a wise man?
And who knows the interpretation of a thing?
(EF)A man’s wisdom makes his face shine,
And (EG)the [ay]sternness of his face is changed.

Obey Authorities for God’s Sake

I say, “Keep the king’s commandment (EH)for the sake of your oath to God. (EI)Do not be hasty to go from his presence. Do not take your stand for an evil thing, for he does whatever pleases him.”

Where the word of a king is, there is power;
And (EJ)who may say to him, “What are you doing?”
He who keeps his command will experience nothing harmful;
And a wise man’s heart [az]discerns both time and judgment,
Because (EK)for every matter there is a time and judgment,
Though the misery of man [ba]increases greatly.
(EL)For he does not know what will happen;
So who can tell him when it will occur?
(EM)No one has power over the spirit to retain the spirit,
And no one has power in the day of death.
There is (EN)no release from that war,
And wickedness will not deliver those who are given to it.

All this I have seen, and applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun: There is a time in which one man rules over another to his own hurt.

Death Comes to All

10 Then I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of holiness, and they were (EO)forgotten[bb] in the city where they had so done. This also is vanity. 11 (EP)Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. 12 (EQ)Though a sinner does evil a hundred times, and his days are prolonged, yet I surely know that (ER)it will be well with those who fear God, who fear before Him. 13 But it will not be well with the wicked; nor will he prolong his days, which are as a shadow, because he does not fear before God.

14 There is a vanity which occurs on earth, that there are just men to whom it (ES)happens according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the (ET)righteous. I said that this also is vanity.

15 (EU)So I commended enjoyment, because a man has nothing better under the sun than to eat, drink, and be merry; for this will remain with him in his labor all the days of his life which God gives him under the sun.

16 When I applied my heart to know wisdom and to see the business that is done on earth, even though one sees no sleep day or night, 17 then I saw all the work of God, that (EV)a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. For though a man labors to discover it, yet he will not find it; moreover, though a wise man attempts to know it, he will not be able to find it.

Death Comes to All

For I [bc]considered all this in my heart, so that I could declare it all: (EW)that the righteous and the wise and their works are in the hand of God. People know neither love nor hatred by anything they see before them. (EX)All things come alike to all:

One event happens to the righteous and the wicked;
To the [bd]good, the clean, and the unclean;
To him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice.
As is the good, so is the sinner;
He who takes an oath as he who fears an oath.

This is an evil in all that is done under the sun: that one thing happens to all. Truly the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead. But for him who is joined to all the living there is hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

For the living know that they will die;
But (EY)the dead know nothing,
And they have no more reward,
For (EZ)the memory of them is forgotten.
Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished;
Nevermore will they have a share
In anything done under the sun.

Go, (FA)eat your bread with joy,
And drink your wine with a merry heart;
For God has already accepted your works.
Let your garments always be white,
And let your head lack no oil.

[be]Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your vain life which He has given you under the sun, all your days of vanity; (FB)for that is your portion in life, and in the labor which you perform under the sun.

10 (FC)Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your (FD)might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.

11 I returned (FE)and saw under the sun that—

The race is not to the swift,
Nor the battle to the strong,
Nor bread to the wise,
Nor riches to men of understanding,
Nor favor to men of skill;
But time and (FF)chance happen to them all.
12 For (FG)man also does not know his time:
Like fish taken in a cruel net,
Like birds caught in a snare,
So the sons of men are (FH)snared in an evil time,
When it falls suddenly upon them.

Wisdom Superior to Folly

13 This wisdom I have also seen under the sun, and it seemed great to me: 14 (FI)There was a little city with few men in it; and a great king came against it, besieged it, and built great [bf]snares around it. 15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city. Yet no one remembered that same poor man.

16 Then I said:

“Wisdom is better than (FJ)strength.
Nevertheless (FK)the poor man’s wisdom is despised,
And his words are not heard.
17 Words of the wise, spoken quietly, should be heard
Rather than the shout of a ruler of fools.
18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war;
But (FL)one sinner destroys much good.”

Wisdom and Folly

10 Dead[bg] flies [bh]putrefy the perfumer’s ointment,
And cause it to give off a foul odor;
So does a little folly to one respected for wisdom and honor.
A wise man’s heart is at his right hand,
But a fool’s heart at his left.
Even when a fool walks along the way,
He lacks wisdom,
(FM)And he shows everyone that he is a fool.
If the spirit of the ruler rises against you,
(FN)Do not leave your post;
For (FO)conciliation[bi] pacifies great offenses.

There is an evil I have seen under the sun,
As an error proceeding from the ruler:
(FP)Folly is set in [bj]great dignity,
While the rich sit in a lowly place.
I have seen servants (FQ)on horses,
While princes walk on the ground like servants.

(FR)He who digs a pit will fall into it,
And whoever breaks through a wall will be bitten by a serpent.
He who quarries stones may be hurt by them,
And he who splits wood may be endangered by it.
10 If the ax is dull,
And one does not sharpen the edge,
Then he must use more strength;
But wisdom [bk]brings success.

11 A serpent may bite (FS)when it is not charmed;
The [bl]babbler is no different.
12 (FT)The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious,
But (FU)the lips of a fool shall swallow him up;
13 The words of his mouth begin with foolishness,
And the end of his talk is raving madness.
14 (FV)A fool also multiplies words.
No man knows what is to be;
Who can tell him (FW)what will be after him?
15 The labor of fools wearies them,
For they do not even know how to go to the city!

16 (FX)Woe to you, O land, when your king is a child,
And your princes feast in the morning!
17 Blessed are you, O land, when your king is the son of nobles,
And your (FY)princes feast at the proper time—
For strength and not for drunkenness!
18 Because of laziness the [bm]building decays,
And (FZ)through idleness of hands the house leaks.
19 A feast is made for laughter,
And (GA)wine makes merry;
But money answers everything.

20 (GB)Do not curse the king, even in your thought;
Do not curse the rich, even in your bedroom;
For a bird of the air may carry your voice,
And a bird in flight may tell the matter.

The Value of Diligence

11 Cast your bread (GC)upon the waters,
(GD)For you will find it after many days.
(GE)Give a serving (GF)to seven, and also to eight,
(GG)For you do not know what evil will be on the earth.

If the clouds are full of rain,
They empty themselves upon the earth;
And if a tree falls to the south or the north,
In the place where the tree falls, there it shall lie.
He who observes the wind will not sow,
And he who regards the clouds will not reap.

As (GH)you do not know what is the way of the [bn]wind,
(GI)Or how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child,
So you do not know the works of God who makes everything.
In the morning sow your seed,
And in the evening do not withhold your hand;
For you do not know which will prosper,
Either this or that,
Or whether both alike will be good.

Truly the light is sweet,
And it is pleasant for the eyes (GJ)to behold the sun;
But if a man lives many years
And (GK)rejoices in them all,
Yet let him (GL)remember the days of darkness,
For they will be many.
All that is coming is vanity.

Seek God in Early Life

Rejoice, O young man, in your youth,
And let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth;
(GM)Walk in the [bo]ways of your heart,
And [bp]in the sight of your eyes;
But know that for all these
(GN)God will bring you into judgment.
10 Therefore remove [bq]sorrow from your heart,
And (GO)put away evil from your flesh,
(GP)For childhood and [br]youth are vanity.

Seek God in Early Life

12 Remember(GQ) now your Creator in the days of your youth,
Before the [bs]difficult days come,
And the years draw near (GR)when you say,
“I have no pleasure in them”:
While the sun and the light,
The moon and the stars,
Are not darkened,
And the clouds do not return after the rain;
In the day when the keepers of the house tremble,
And the strong men bow down;
When the grinders cease because they are few,
And those that look through the windows grow dim;
When the doors are shut in the streets,
And the sound of grinding is low;
When one rises up at the sound of a bird,
And all (GS)the daughters of music are brought low.
Also they are afraid of height,
And of terrors in the way;
When the almond tree blossoms,
The grasshopper is a burden,
And desire fails.
For man goes to (GT)his eternal home,
And (GU)the mourners go about the streets.

Remember your Creator before the silver cord is [bt]loosed,
Or the golden bowl is broken,
Or the pitcher shattered at the fountain,
Or the wheel broken at the well.
(GV)Then the dust will return to the earth as it was,
(GW)And the spirit will return to God (GX)who gave it.

“Vanity(GY) of vanities,” says the Preacher,
“All is vanity.”

The Whole Duty of Man

And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yes, he pondered and sought out and (GZ)set[bu] in order many proverbs. 10 The Preacher sought to find [bv]acceptable words; and what was written was upright—words of truth. 11 The words of the wise are like goads, and the words of [bw]scholars are like well-driven nails, given by one Shepherd. 12 And further, my son, be admonished by these. Of making many books there is no end, and (HA)much study is wearisome to the flesh.

13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:

(HB)Fear God and keep His commandments,
For this is man’s all.
14 For (HC)God will bring every work into judgment,
Including every secret thing,
Whether good or evil.

Everything Is Meaningless

The words of the Teacher,[a](A) son of David, king in Jerusalem:(B)

“Meaningless! Meaningless!”
    says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
    Everything is meaningless.”(C)

What do people gain from all their labors
    at which they toil under the sun?(D)
Generations come and generations go,
    but the earth remains forever.(E)
The sun rises and the sun sets,
    and hurries back to where it rises.(F)
The wind blows to the south
    and turns to the north;
round and round it goes,
    ever returning on its course.
All streams flow into the sea,
    yet the sea is never full.
To the place the streams come from,
    there they return again.(G)
All things are wearisome,
    more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing,(H)
    nor the ear its fill of hearing.
What has been will be again,
    what has been done will be done again;(I)
    there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Is there anything of which one can say,
    “Look! This is something new”?
It was here already, long ago;
    it was here before our time.
11 No one remembers the former generations,(J)
    and even those yet to come
will not be remembered
    by those who follow them.(K)

Wisdom Is Meaningless

12 I, the Teacher,(L) was king over Israel in Jerusalem.(M) 13 I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens.(N) What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind!(O) 14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.(P)

15 What is crooked cannot be straightened;(Q)
    what is lacking cannot be counted.

16 I said to myself, “Look, I have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me;(R) I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge.” 17 Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom,(S) and also of madness and folly,(T) but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.

18 For with much wisdom comes much sorrow;(U)
    the more knowledge, the more grief.(V)

Pleasures Are Meaningless

I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure(W) to find out what is good.” But that also proved to be meaningless. “Laughter,”(X) I said, “is madness. And what does pleasure accomplish?” I tried cheering myself with wine,(Y) and embracing folly(Z)—my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives.

I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself(AA) and planted vineyards.(AB) I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees. I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves(AC) who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me. I amassed silver and gold(AD) for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces.(AE) I acquired male and female singers,(AF) and a harem[b] as well—the delights of a man’s heart. I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem(AG) before me.(AH) In all this my wisdom stayed with me.

10 I denied myself nothing my eyes desired;
    I refused my heart no pleasure.
My heart took delight in all my labor,
    and this was the reward for all my toil.
11 Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done
    and what I had toiled to achieve,
everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;(AI)
    nothing was gained under the sun.(AJ)

Wisdom and Folly Are Meaningless

12 Then I turned my thoughts to consider wisdom,
    and also madness and folly.(AK)
What more can the king’s successor do
    than what has already been done?(AL)
13 I saw that wisdom(AM) is better than folly,(AN)
    just as light is better than darkness.
14 The wise have eyes in their heads,
    while the fool walks in the darkness;
but I came to realize
    that the same fate overtakes them both.(AO)

15 Then I said to myself,

“The fate of the fool will overtake me also.
    What then do I gain by being wise?”(AP)
I said to myself,
    “This too is meaningless.”
16 For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered;(AQ)
    the days have already come when both have been forgotten.(AR)
Like the fool, the wise too must die!(AS)

Toil Is Meaningless

17 So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.(AT) 18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.(AU) 19 And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish?(AV) Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. 20 So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. 21 For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. 22 What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun?(AW) 23 All their days their work is grief and pain;(AX) even at night their minds do not rest.(AY) This too is meaningless.

24 A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink(AZ) and find satisfaction in their own toil.(BA) This too, I see, is from the hand of God,(BB) 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?(BC) 26 To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom,(BD) knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth(BE) to hand it over to the one who pleases God.(BF) This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

A Time for Everything

There is a time(BG) for everything,
    and a season for every activity under the heavens:

    a time to be born and a time to die,
    a time to plant and a time to uproot,(BH)
    a time to kill(BI) and a time to heal,
    a time to tear down and a time to build,
    a time to weep and a time to laugh,
    a time to mourn and a time to dance,
    a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
    a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
    a time to search and a time to give up,
    a time to keep and a time to throw away,
    a time to tear and a time to mend,
    a time to be silent(BJ) and a time to speak,
    a time to love and a time to hate,
    a time for war and a time for peace.

What do workers gain from their toil?(BK) 10 I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race.(BL) 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time.(BM) He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet[c] no one can fathom(BN) what God has done from beginning to end.(BO) 12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. 13 That each of them may eat and drink,(BP) and find satisfaction(BQ) in all their toil—this is the gift of God.(BR) 14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him.(BS)

15 Whatever is has already been,(BT)
    and what will be has been before;(BU)
    and God will call the past to account.[d]

16 And I saw something else under the sun:

In the place of judgment—wickedness was there,
    in the place of justice—wickedness was there.

17 I said to myself,

“God will bring into judgment(BV)
    both the righteous and the wicked,
for there will be a time for every activity,
    a time to judge every deed.”(BW)

18 I also said to myself, “As for humans, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals.(BX) 19 Surely the fate of human beings(BY) is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath[e]; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless. 20 All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.(BZ) 21 Who knows if the human spirit rises upward(CA) and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?”

22 So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work,(CB) because that is their lot.(CC) For who can bring them to see what will happen after them?

Oppression, Toil, Friendlessness

Again I looked and saw all the oppression(CD) that was taking place under the sun:

I saw the tears of the oppressed—
    and they have no comforter;
power was on the side of their oppressors—
    and they have no comforter.(CE)
And I declared that the dead,(CF)
    who had already died,
are happier than the living,
    who are still alive.(CG)
But better than both
    is the one who has never been born,(CH)
who has not seen the evil
    that is done under the sun.(CI)

And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.(CJ)

Fools fold their hands(CK)
    and ruin themselves.
Better one handful with tranquillity
    than two handfuls with toil(CL)
    and chasing after the wind.

Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:

There was a man all alone;
    he had neither son nor brother.
There was no end to his toil,
    yet his eyes were not content(CM) with his wealth.
“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
    “and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”
This too is meaningless—
    a miserable business!

Two are better than one,
    because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,
    one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
    and has no one to help them up.
11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
    But how can one keep warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered,
    two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Advancement Is Meaningless

13 Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to heed a warning. 14 The youth may have come from prison to the kingship, or he may have been born in poverty within his kingdom. 15 I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed the youth, the king’s successor. 16 There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Fulfill Your Vow to God

[f]Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.

Do not be quick with your mouth,
    do not be hasty in your heart
    to utter anything before God.(CN)
God is in heaven
    and you are on earth,
    so let your words be few.(CO)
A dream(CP) comes when there are many cares,
    and many words mark the speech of a fool.(CQ)

When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it.(CR) He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow.(CS) It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.(CT) Do not let your mouth lead you into sin. And do not protest to the temple messenger, “My vow was a mistake.” Why should God be angry at what you say and destroy the work of your hands? Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore fear God.(CU)

Riches Are Meaningless

If you see the poor oppressed(CV) in a district, and justice and rights denied, do not be surprised at such things; for one official is eyed by a higher one, and over them both are others higher still. The increase from the land is taken by all; the king himself profits from the fields.

10 Whoever loves money never has enough;
    whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income.
    This too is meaningless.

11 As goods increase,
    so do those who consume them.
And what benefit are they to the owners
    except to feast their eyes on them?

12 The sleep of a laborer is sweet,
    whether they eat little or much,
but as for the rich, their abundance
    permits them no sleep.(CW)

13 I have seen a grievous evil under the sun:(CX)

wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners,
14     or wealth lost through some misfortune,
so that when they have children
    there is nothing left for them to inherit.
15 Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb,
    and as everyone comes, so they depart.(CY)
They take nothing from their toil(CZ)
    that they can carry in their hands.(DA)

16 This too is a grievous evil:

As everyone comes, so they depart,
    and what do they gain,
    since they toil for the wind?(DB)
17 All their days they eat in darkness,
    with great frustration, affliction and anger.

18 This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink(DC) and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor(DD) under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. 19 Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions,(DE) and the ability to enjoy them,(DF) to accept their lot(DG) and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God.(DH) 20 They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.(DI)

I have seen another evil under the sun, and it weighs heavily on mankind: God gives some people wealth, possessions and honor, so that they lack nothing their hearts desire, but God does not grant them the ability to enjoy them,(DJ) and strangers enjoy them instead. This is meaningless, a grievous evil.(DK)

A man may have a hundred children and live many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he cannot enjoy his prosperity and does not receive proper burial, I say that a stillborn(DL) child is better off than he.(DM) It comes without meaning, it departs in darkness, and in darkness its name is shrouded. Though it never saw the sun or knew anything, it has more rest than does that man— even if he lives a thousand years twice over but fails to enjoy his prosperity. Do not all go to the same place?(DN)

Everyone’s toil is for their mouth,
    yet their appetite is never satisfied.(DO)
What advantage have the wise over fools?(DP)
What do the poor gain
    by knowing how to conduct themselves before others?
Better what the eye sees
    than the roving of the appetite.
This too is meaningless,
    a chasing after the wind.(DQ)

10 Whatever exists has already been named,(DR)
    and what humanity is has been known;
no one can contend
    with someone who is stronger.
11 The more the words,
    the less the meaning,
    and how does that profit anyone?

12 For who knows what is good for a person in life, during the few and meaningless days(DS) they pass through like a shadow?(DT) Who can tell them what will happen under the sun after they are gone?

Wisdom

A good name is better than fine perfume,(DU)
    and the day of death better than the day of birth.(DV)
It is better to go to a house of mourning
    than to go to a house of feasting,
for death(DW) is the destiny(DX) of everyone;
    the living should take this to heart.
Frustration is better than laughter,(DY)
    because a sad face is good for the heart.
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,
    but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.(DZ)
It is better to heed the rebuke(EA) of a wise person
    than to listen to the song of fools.
Like the crackling of thorns(EB) under the pot,
    so is the laughter(EC) of fools.
    This too is meaningless.

Extortion turns a wise person into a fool,
    and a bribe(ED) corrupts the heart.

The end of a matter is better than its beginning,
    and patience(EE) is better than pride.
Do not be quickly provoked(EF) in your spirit,
    for anger resides in the lap of fools.(EG)

10 Do not say, “Why were the old days(EH) better than these?”
    For it is not wise to ask such questions.

11 Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing(EI)
    and benefits those who see the sun.(EJ)
12 Wisdom is a shelter
    as money is a shelter,
but the advantage of knowledge is this:
    Wisdom preserves those who have it.

13 Consider what God has done:(EK)

Who can straighten
    what he has made crooked?(EL)
14 When times are good, be happy;
    but when times are bad, consider this:
God has made the one
    as well as the other.(EM)
Therefore, no one can discover
    anything about their future.

15 In this meaningless life(EN) of mine I have seen both of these:

the righteous perishing in their righteousness,
    and the wicked living long in their wickedness.(EO)
16 Do not be overrighteous,
    neither be overwise—
    why destroy yourself?
17 Do not be overwicked,
    and do not be a fool—
    why die before your time?(EP)
18 It is good to grasp the one
    and not let go of the other.
    Whoever fears God(EQ) will avoid all extremes.[g]

19 Wisdom(ER) makes one wise person more powerful(ES)
    than ten rulers in a city.

20 Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous,(ET)
    no one who does what is right and never sins.(EU)

21 Do not pay attention to every word people say,
    or you(EV) may hear your servant cursing you—
22 for you know in your heart
    that many times you yourself have cursed others.

23 All this I tested by wisdom and I said,

“I am determined to be wise”(EW)
    but this was beyond me.
24 Whatever exists is far off and most profound—
    who can discover it?(EX)
25 So I turned my mind to understand,
    to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things(EY)
and to understand the stupidity of wickedness
    and the madness of folly.(EZ)

26 I find more bitter than death
    the woman who is a snare,(FA)
whose heart is a trap
    and whose hands are chains.
The man who pleases God will escape her,
    but the sinner she will ensnare.(FB)

27 “Look,” says the Teacher,[h](FC) “this is what I have discovered:

“Adding one thing to another to discover the scheme of things—
28     while I was still searching
    but not finding—
I found one upright man among a thousand,
    but not one upright woman(FD) among them all.
29 This only have I found:
    God created mankind upright,
    but they have gone in search of many schemes.”

Who is like the wise?
    Who knows the explanation of things?
A person’s wisdom brightens their face
    and changes its hard appearance.

Obey the King

Obey the king’s command, I say, because you took an oath before God. Do not be in a hurry to leave the king’s presence.(FE) Do not stand up for a bad cause, for he will do whatever he pleases. Since a king’s word is supreme, who can say to him, “What are you doing?(FF)

Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm,
    and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure.
For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter,(FG)
    though a person may be weighed down by misery.

Since no one knows the future,
    who can tell someone else what is to come?
As no one has power over the wind to contain it,
    so[i] no one has power over the time of their death.
As no one is discharged in time of war,
    so wickedness will not release those who practice it.

All this I saw, as I applied my mind to everything done under the sun. There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own[j] hurt. 10 Then too, I saw the wicked buried(FH)—those who used to come and go from the holy place and receive praise[k] in the city where they did this. This too is meaningless.

11 When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, people’s hearts are filled with schemes to do wrong. 12 Although a wicked person who commits a hundred crimes may live a long time, I know that it will go better(FI) with those who fear God,(FJ) who are reverent before him.(FK) 13 Yet because the wicked do not fear God,(FL) it will not go well with them, and their days(FM) will not lengthen like a shadow.

14 There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve.(FN) This too, I say, is meaningless.(FO) 15 So I commend the enjoyment of life(FP), because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink(FQ) and be glad.(FR) Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.

16 When I applied my mind to know wisdom(FS) and to observe the labor that is done on earth(FT)—people getting no sleep day or night— 17 then I saw all that God has done.(FU) No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it.(FV)

A Common Destiny for All

So I reflected on all this and concluded that the righteous and the wise and what they do are in God’s hands, but no one knows whether love or hate awaits them.(FW) All share a common destiny—the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad,[l] the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not.

As it is with the good,
    so with the sinful;
as it is with those who take oaths,
    so with those who are afraid to take them.(FX)

This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all.(FY) The hearts of people, moreover, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live,(FZ) and afterward they join the dead.(GA) Anyone who is among the living has hope[m]—even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!

For the living know that they will die,
    but the dead know nothing;(GB)
they have no further reward,
    and even their name(GC) is forgotten.(GD)
Their love, their hate
    and their jealousy have long since vanished;
never again will they have a part
    in anything that happens under the sun.(GE)

Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine(GF) with a joyful heart,(GG) for God has already approved what you do. Always be clothed in white,(GH) and always anoint your head with oil. Enjoy life with your wife,(GI) whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot(GJ) in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. 10 Whatever(GK) your hand finds to do, do it with all your might,(GL) for in the realm of the dead,(GM) where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.(GN)

11 I have seen something else under the sun:

The race is not to the swift
    or the battle to the strong,(GO)
nor does food come to the wise(GP)
    or wealth to the brilliant
    or favor to the learned;
but time and chance(GQ) happen to them all.(GR)

12 Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come:

As fish are caught in a cruel net,
    or birds are taken in a snare,
so people are trapped by evil times(GS)
    that fall unexpectedly upon them.(GT)

Wisdom Better Than Folly

13 I also saw under the sun this example of wisdom(GU) that greatly impressed me: 14 There was once a small city with only a few people in it. And a powerful king came against it, surrounded it and built huge siege works against it. 15 Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man.(GV) 16 So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded.(GW)

17 The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded
    than the shouts of a ruler of fools.
18 Wisdom(GX) is better than weapons of war,
    but one sinner destroys much good.

10 As dead flies give perfume a bad smell,
    so a little folly(GY) outweighs wisdom and honor.
The heart of the wise inclines to the right,
    but the heart of the fool to the left.
Even as fools walk along the road,
    they lack sense
    and show everyone(GZ) how stupid they are.
If a ruler’s anger rises against you,
    do not leave your post;(HA)
    calmness can lay great offenses to rest.(HB)

There is an evil I have seen under the sun,
    the sort of error that arises from a ruler:
Fools are put in many high positions,(HC)
    while the rich occupy the low ones.
I have seen slaves on horseback,
    while princes go on foot like slaves.(HD)

Whoever digs a pit may fall into it;(HE)
    whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.(HF)
Whoever quarries stones may be injured by them;
    whoever splits logs may be endangered by them.(HG)

10 If the ax is dull
    and its edge unsharpened,
more strength is needed,
    but skill will bring success.

11 If a snake bites before it is charmed,
    the charmer receives no fee.(HH)

12 Words from the mouth of the wise are gracious,(HI)
    but fools are consumed by their own lips.(HJ)
13 At the beginning their words are folly;
    at the end they are wicked madness—
14     and fools multiply words.(HK)

No one knows what is coming—
    who can tell someone else what will happen after them?(HL)

15 The toil of fools wearies them;
    they do not know the way to town.

16 Woe to the land whose king was a servant[n](HM)
    and whose princes feast in the morning.
17 Blessed is the land whose king is of noble birth
    and whose princes eat at a proper time—
    for strength and not for drunkenness.(HN)

18 Through laziness, the rafters sag;
    because of idle hands, the house leaks.(HO)

19 A feast is made for laughter,
    wine(HP) makes life merry,
    and money is the answer for everything.

20 Do not revile the king(HQ) even in your thoughts,
    or curse the rich in your bedroom,
because a bird in the sky may carry your words,
    and a bird on the wing may report what you say.

Invest in Many Ventures

11 Ship(HR) your grain across the sea;
    after many days you may receive a return.(HS)
Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight;
    you do not know what disaster may come upon the land.

If clouds are full of water,
    they pour rain on the earth.
Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north,
    in the place where it falls, there it will lie.
Whoever watches the wind will not plant;
    whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.

As you do not know the path of the wind,(HT)
    or how the body is formed[o] in a mother’s womb,(HU)
so you cannot understand the work of God,
    the Maker of all things.

Sow your seed in the morning,
    and at evening let your hands not be idle,(HV)
for you do not know which will succeed,
    whether this or that,
    or whether both will do equally well.

Remember Your Creator While Young

Light is sweet,
    and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.(HW)
However many years anyone may live,
    let them enjoy them all.
But let them remember(HX) the days of darkness,
    for there will be many.
    Everything to come is meaningless.

You who are young, be happy while you are young,
    and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.
Follow the ways of your heart
    and whatever your eyes see,
but know that for all these things
    God will bring you into judgment.(HY)
10 So then, banish anxiety(HZ) from your heart
    and cast off the troubles of your body,
    for youth and vigor are meaningless.(IA)

12 Remember(IB) your Creator
    in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble(IC) come
    and the years approach when you will say,
    “I find no pleasure in them”—
before the sun and the light
    and the moon and the stars grow dark,
    and the clouds return after the rain;
when the keepers of the house tremble,
    and the strong men stoop,
when the grinders cease because they are few,
    and those looking through the windows grow dim;
when the doors to the street are closed
    and the sound of grinding fades;
when people rise up at the sound of birds,
    but all their songs grow faint;(ID)
when people are afraid of heights
    and of dangers in the streets;
when the almond tree blossoms
    and the grasshopper drags itself along
    and desire no longer is stirred.
Then people go to their eternal home(IE)
    and mourners(IF) go about the streets.

Remember him—before the silver cord is severed,
    and the golden bowl is broken;
before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,
    and the wheel broken at the well,
and the dust returns(IG) to the ground it came from,
    and the spirit returns to God(IH) who gave it.(II)

“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher.[p](IJ)
    “Everything is meaningless!(IK)

The Conclusion of the Matter

Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs.(IL) 10 The Teacher(IM) searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.(IN)

11 The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails(IO)—given by one shepherd.[q] 12 Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them.

Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.(IP)

13 Now all has been heard;
    here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God(IQ) and keep his commandments,(IR)
    for this is the duty of all mankind.(IS)
14 For God will bring every deed into judgment,(IT)
    including every hidden thing,(IU)
    whether it is good or evil.
