16 “So as soon as all the men of war had perished and were dead from among the people, 17 the Lord said to me, 18 ‘Today you are to cross the border of Moab at Ar. 19 And when you approach the territory of the people of Ammon, (A)do not harass them or contend with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the people of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to (B)the sons of Lot for a possession.’ 20 (It is also counted as a land of (C)Rephaim. Rephaim formerly lived there—but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim— 21 (D)a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim; but the Lord destroyed them before the Ammonites,[a] and they dispossessed them and settled in their place, 22 as he did for the people of Esau, who live in Seir, when he destroyed (E)the Horites before them and they dispossessed them and settled in their place even to this day. 23 As for (F)the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as (G)Gaza, (H)the Caphtorim, who came from Caphtor, destroyed them and settled in their place.) 24 ‘Rise up, set out on your journey and (I)go over the Valley of the Arnon. Behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of (J)Heshbon, and his land. Begin to take possession, and (K)contend with him in battle. 25 This day I will begin to put (L)the dread and fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of you and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.’

The Defeat of King Sihon

26 “So I sent messengers from the wilderness of (M)Kedemoth to Sihon the king of (N)Heshbon, (O)with words of peace, saying, 27 (P)‘Let me pass through your land. I will go only by the road; I will turn aside neither to the right nor to the left. 28 (Q)You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat, and give me water for money, that I may drink. Only let me pass through on foot, 29 (R)as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I go over the Jordan into the land that the Lord our God is giving to us.’ 30 But (S)Sihon the king of (T)Heshbon would not let us pass by him, for the Lord your God (U)hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might give him into your hand, as he is this day. 31 And the Lord said to me, ‘Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to take possession, that you may occupy his land.’ 32 Then (V)Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz. 33 And (W)the Lord our God gave him over to us, and (X)we defeated him and his sons and all his people. 34 And we captured all his cities at that time and devoted to destruction[b] every (Y)city, men, women, and children. We left no survivors. 35 Only the livestock we took as spoil for ourselves, with the plunder of the cities that we captured. 36 (Z)From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and from (AA)the city that is in the valley, as far as Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. (AB)The Lord our God gave all into our hands. 37 Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near, that is, to all the banks of the river (AC)Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, whatever the Lord our God had forbidden us.

16 Now when the last of these fighting men among the people had died, 17 the Lord said to me, 18 “Today you are to pass by the region of Moab at Ar.(A) 19 When you come to the Ammonites,(B) do not harass them or provoke them to war,(C) for I will not give you possession of any land belonging to the Ammonites. I have given it as a possession to the descendants of Lot.(D)

20 (That too was considered a land of the Rephaites,(E) who used to live there; but the Ammonites called them Zamzummites. 21 They were a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites.(F) The Lord destroyed them from before the Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place. 22 The Lord had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who lived in Seir,(G) when he destroyed the Horites from before them. They drove them out and have lived in their place to this day. 23 And as for the Avvites(H) who lived in villages as far as Gaza,(I) the Caphtorites(J) coming out from Caphtor[a](K) destroyed them and settled in their place.)

Defeat of Sihon King of Heshbon

24 “Set out now and cross the Arnon Gorge.(L) See, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite,(M) king of Heshbon, and his country. Begin to take possession of it and engage(N) him in battle. 25 This very day I will begin to put the terror(O) and fear(P) of you on all the nations under heaven. They will hear reports of you and will tremble(Q) and be in anguish because of you.”

26 From the Desert of Kedemoth(R) I sent messengers to Sihon(S) king of Heshbon offering peace(T) and saying, 27 “Let us pass through your country. We will stay on the main road; we will not turn aside to the right or to the left.(U) 28 Sell us food to eat(V) and water to drink for their price in silver. Only let us pass through on foot(W) 29 as the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, did for us—until we cross the Jordan into the land the Lord our God is giving us.” 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon refused to let us pass through. For the Lord(X) your God had made his spirit stubborn(Y) and his heart obstinate(Z) in order to give him into your hands,(AA) as he has now done.

31 The Lord said to me, “See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his country over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land.”(AB)

32 When Sihon and all his army came out to meet us in battle(AC) at Jahaz, 33 the Lord our God delivered(AD) him over to us and we struck him down,(AE) together with his sons and his whole army. 34 At that time we took all his towns and completely destroyed[b](AF) them—men, women and children. We left no survivors. 35 But the livestock(AG) and the plunder(AH) from the towns we had captured we carried off for ourselves. 36 From Aroer(AI) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the gorge, even as far as Gilead,(AJ) not one town was too strong for us. The Lord our God gave(AK) us all of them. 37 But in accordance with the command of the Lord our God,(AL) you did not encroach on any of the land of the Ammonites,(AM) neither the land along the course of the Jabbok(AN) nor that around the towns in the hills.

  2. Deuteronomy 2:34 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the Lord, often by totally destroying them.

16 So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,

17 That the Lord spake unto me, saying,

18 Thou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, this day:

19 And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.

20 (That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;

21 A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the Lord destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead:

22 As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day:

23 And the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)

24 Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.

25 This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.

26 And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,

27 Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.

28 Thou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet;

29 (As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the Lord our God giveth us.

30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the Lord thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.

31 And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.

32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.

33 And the Lord our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.

34 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:

35 Only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.

36 From Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the Lord our God delivered all unto us:

37 Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the Lord our God forbad us.
