I, Paul, am writing this letter. I am an apostle of Christ Jesus just as God planned. He sent me to tell about the promise of life found in Christ Jesus.

Timothy, I am sending you this letter. You are my dear son.

May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy and peace.

Paul Gives Thanks

I thank God, whom I serve as did our people of long ago. I serve God, knowing that what I have done is right. Night and day I thank God for you. Night and day I always remember you in my prayers. I remember your tears. I long to see you so that I can be filled with joy. I remember your honest and true faith. It was alive first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice. And I am certain that it is now alive in you also.

Paul Encourages Timothy to Be Faithful

This is why I remind you to help God’s gift grow, just as a small spark grows into a fire. God put his gift in you when I placed my hands on you. God gave us his Spirit. And the Spirit doesn’t make us weak and fearful. Instead, the Spirit gives us power and love. He helps us control ourselves. So don’t be ashamed of the message about our Lord. And don’t be ashamed of me, his prisoner. Instead, join with me as I suffer for the good news. God’s power will help us do that. God has saved us. He has chosen us to live a holy life. It wasn’t because of anything we have done. It was because of his own purpose and grace. Through Christ Jesus, God gave us this grace even before time began. 10 It has now been made known through the coming of our Savior, Christ Jesus. He has broken the power of death. Because of the good news, he has brought life out into the light. That life never dies. 11 I was appointed to announce the good news. I was appointed to be an apostle and a teacher. 12 That’s why I’m suffering the way I am. But this gives me no reason to be ashamed. That’s because I know who I have believed in. I am sure he is able to take care of what I have given him. I can trust him with it until the day he returns as judge.

13 Follow what you heard from me as the pattern of true teaching. Follow it with faith and love because you belong to Christ Jesus. 14 Guard the truth of the good news that you were trusted with. Guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

Examples of Faithful and Unfaithful People

15 You know that all the believers in Asia Minor have deserted me. They include Phygelus and Hermogenes.

16 May the Lord show mercy to all who live in the house of Onesiphorus. He often encouraged me. He was not ashamed that I was being held by chains. 17 In fact, it was just the opposite. When he was in Rome, he looked everywhere for me. At last he found me. 18 May Onesiphorus find mercy from the Lord on the day Jesus returns as judge! You know very well how many ways Onesiphorus helped me in Ephesus.

Paul Again Encourages Timothy to Be Faithful

My son, be strong in the grace that is yours in Christ Jesus. You have heard me teach in front of many witnesses. Pass on to people you can trust the things you’ve heard me say. Then they will be able to teach others also. Like a good soldier of Christ Jesus, join with me in suffering. A soldier does not take part in things that don’t have anything to do with the army. Instead, he tries to please his commanding officer. It is the same for anyone who takes part in a sport. They don’t receive the winner’s crown unless they play by the rules. The farmer who works hard should be the first to receive a share of the crops. Think about what I’m saying. The Lord will help you understand what all of it means.

Remember Jesus Christ. He came from David’s family line. He was raised from the dead. That is my good news. I am suffering for it. I have even been put in chains like someone who has committed a crime. But God’s word is not held back by chains. 10 So I put up with everything for the good of God’s chosen people. Then they also can be saved. Christ Jesus saves them. He gives them glory that will last forever.

11 Here is a saying you can trust.

If we died with him,
we will also live with him.
12 If we don’t give up,
we will also rule with him.
If we say we don’t know him,
he will also say he doesn’t know us.
13 Even if we are not faithful,
    he remains faithful.
He must be true to himself.

What to Do About False Teachers

14 Keep reminding God’s people of these things. While God is watching, warn them not to argue about words. That doesn’t have any value. It only destroys those who listen. 15 Do your best to please God. Be a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed. Teach the message of truth correctly. 16 Stay away from godless chatter. Those who take part in it will become more and more ungodly. 17 Their teaching will spread like a deadly sickness. Hymenaeus and Philetus are two of those teachers. 18 They have turned away from the truth. They say that the time when people will rise from the dead has already come. They destroy the faith of some people. 19 But God’s solid foundation stands firm. Here is the message written on it. “The Lord knows who his own people are.” (Numbers 16:5) Also, “All who say they believe in the Lord must turn away from evil.”

20 In a large house there are things made out of gold and silver. But there are also things made out of wood and clay. Some have special purposes. Others have common purposes. 21 Suppose someone stays away from what is common. Then the Master will be able to use them for special purposes. They will be made holy. They will be ready to do any good work.

22 Run away from the evil things that young people long for. Try hard to do what is right. Have faith, love and peace. Do these things together with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. 23 Don’t have anything to do with arguing. It is dumb and foolish. You know it only leads to fights. 24 Anyone who serves the Lord must not be hard to get along with. Instead, they must be kind to everyone. They must be able to teach. The one who serves must not hold anything against anyone. 25 They must gently teach those who are against them. Maybe God will give a change of heart to those who are against you. That will lead them to know the truth. 26 Maybe they will come to their senses. Maybe they will escape the devil’s trap. He has taken them as prisoners to do what he wanted.

Here is what I want you to know. There will be terrible times in the last days. People will love themselves. They will love money. They will brag and be proud. They will tear others down. They will not obey their parents. They won’t be thankful or holy. They won’t love others. They won’t forgive others. They will tell lies about people. They will be out of control. They will be wild. They will hate what is good. They will turn against their friends. They will act without thinking. They will think they are better than others. They will love what pleases them instead of loving God. They will act as if they were serving God. But what they do will show that they have turned their backs on God’s power. Have nothing to do with these people.

They are the kind who trick their way into the homes of some women. These women are ready to believe anything. And they take control over these women. These women are loaded down with sins. They give in to all kinds of evil desires. They are always learning. But they are never able to come to know the truth. Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses. In the same way, the teachers I’m talking about oppose the truth. Their minds are twisted. As far as the faith is concerned, God doesn’t accept them. They won’t get very far. Just like Jannes and Jambres, their foolish ways will be clear to everyone.

Paul Gives a Final Command to Timothy

10 But you know all about my teaching. You know how I live and what I live for. You know about my faith and love. You know how patient I am. You know I haven’t given up. 11 You know that I was treated badly. You know that I suffered greatly. You know what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra. You know how badly I have been treated. But the Lord saved me from all my troubles. 12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be treated badly. 13 Evil people and pretenders will go from bad to worse. They will fool others, and others will fool them. 14 But I want you to continue to follow what you have learned and are sure about. You know the people you learned it from. 15 You have known the Holy Scriptures ever since you were a little child. They are able to teach you how to be saved by believing in Christ Jesus. 16 God has breathed life into all Scripture. It is useful for teaching us what is true. It is useful for correcting our mistakes. It is useful for making our lives whole again. It is useful for training us to do what is right. 17 By using Scripture, the servant of God can be completely prepared to do every good thing.

I give you a command in the sight of God and Christ Jesus. Christ will judge the living and the dead. Because he and his kingdom are coming, here is the command I give you. Preach the word. Be ready to serve God in good times and bad. Correct people’s mistakes. Warn them. Encourage them with words of hope. Be very patient as you do these things. Teach them carefully. The time will come when people won’t put up with true teaching. Instead, they will try to satisfy their own desires. They will gather a large number of teachers around them. The teachers will say what the people want to hear. The people will turn their ears away from the truth. They will turn to stories that aren’t true. But I want you to keep your head no matter what happens. Don’t give up when times are hard. Work to spread the good news. Do everything God has given you to do.

I am already being poured out like a drink offering. The time when I will leave is near. I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. Now there is a crown waiting for me. It is given to those who are right with God. The Lord, who judges fairly, will give it to me on the day he returns. He will not give it only to me. He will also give it to all those who are longing for him to return.

Personal Words

Do your best to come to me quickly. 10 Demas has deserted me. He has gone to Thessalonica. He left me because he loved this world. Crescens has gone to Galatia. Titus has gone to Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you. He helps me in my work for the Lord. 12 I sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 13 When you come, bring my coat. I left it with Carpus at Troas. Also bring my books. Most of all, bring the ones made out of animal skins.

14 Remember Alexander, the one who works with metal. He did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will pay him back for what he has done. 15 You too should watch out for him. He strongly opposed our message.

16 The first time I was put on trial, no one came to help me. Everyone deserted me. I hope they will be forgiven for it. 17 The Lord stood at my side. He gave me the strength to preach the whole message. Then all the Gentiles heard it. I was saved from the lion’s mouth. 18 The Lord will save me from every evil attack. He will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. Give him glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Final Greetings

19 Greet Priscilla and Aquila. Greet those who live in the house of Onesiphorus.

20 Erastus stayed in Corinth. I left Trophimus sick in Miletus. 21 Do your best to get here before winter.

Eubulus greets you. So do Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brothers and sisters.

22 May the Lord be with your spirit. May God’s grace be with you all.

Paul, an apostle(A) of Christ Jesus by the will of God,(B) in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,(C)

To Timothy,(D) my dear son:(E)

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.(F)

Thanksgiving

I thank God,(G) whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience,(H) as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.(I) Recalling your tears,(J) I long to see you,(K) so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith,(L) which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice(M) and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

Appeal for Loyalty to Paul and the Gospel

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.(N) For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid,(O) but gives us power,(P) love and self-discipline. So do not be ashamed(Q) of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner.(R) Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel,(S) by the power of God. He has saved(T) us and called(U) us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done(V) but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed(W) through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus,(X) who has destroyed death(Y) and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11 And of this gospel(Z) I was appointed(AA) a herald and an apostle and a teacher.(AB) 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame,(AC) because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard(AD) what I have entrusted to him until that day.(AE)

13 What you heard from me,(AF) keep(AG) as the pattern(AH) of sound teaching,(AI) with faith and love in Christ Jesus.(AJ) 14 Guard(AK) the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.(AL)

Examples of Disloyalty and Loyalty

15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia(AM) has deserted me,(AN) including Phygelus and Hermogenes.

16 May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus,(AO) because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed(AP) of my chains.(AQ) 17 On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. 18 May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day!(AR) You know very well in how many ways he helped me(AS) in Ephesus.(AT)

The Appeal Renewed

You then, my son,(AU) be strong(AV) in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say(AW) in the presence of many witnesses(AX) entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. Join with me in suffering,(AY) like a good soldier(AZ) of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown(BA) except by competing according to the rules. The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops.(BB) Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.

Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead,(BC) descended from David.(BD) This is my gospel,(BE) for which I am suffering(BF) even to the point of being chained(BG) like a criminal. But God’s word(BH) is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything(BI) for the sake of the elect,(BJ) that they too may obtain the salvation(BK) that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.(BL)

11 Here is a trustworthy saying:(BM)

If we died with him,
we will also live with him;(BN)
12 if we endure,
we will also reign with him.(BO)
If we disown him,
    he will also disown us;(BP)
13 if we are faithless,
    he remains faithful,(BQ)
    for he cannot disown himself.

Dealing With False Teachers

14 Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words;(BR) it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.(BS) 16 Avoid godless chatter,(BT) because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. 17 Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus(BU) and Philetus, 18 who have departed from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place,(BV) and they destroy the faith of some.(BW) 19 Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm,(BX) sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,”(BY) and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord(BZ) must turn away from wickedness.”

20 In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use.(CA) 21 Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.(CB)

22 Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love(CC) and peace, along with those who call on the Lord(CD) out of a pure heart.(CE) 23 Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.(CF) 24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.(CG) 25 Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth,(CH) 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil,(CI) who has taken them captive to do his will.

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.(CJ) People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money,(CK) boastful, proud,(CL) abusive,(CM) disobedient to their parents,(CN) ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous,(CO) rash, conceited,(CP) lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness(CQ) but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.(CR)

They are the kind who worm their way(CS) into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.(CT) Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses,(CU) so also these teachers oppose(CV) the truth. They are men of depraved minds,(CW) who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men,(CX) their folly will be clear to everyone.

A Final Charge to Timothy

10 You, however, know all about my teaching,(CY) my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, 11 persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch,(CZ) Iconium(DA) and Lystra,(DB) the persecutions I endured.(DC) Yet the Lord rescued(DD) me from all of them.(DE) 12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,(DF) 13 while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse,(DG) deceiving and being deceived.(DH) 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,(DI) 15 and how from infancy(DJ) you have known the Holy Scriptures,(DK) which are able to make you wise(DL) for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed(DM) and is useful for teaching,(DN) rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,(DO) 17 so that the servant of God[a](DP) may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.(DQ)

In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead,(DR) and in view of his appearing(DS) and his kingdom, I give you this charge:(DT) Preach(DU) the word;(DV) be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke(DW) and encourage(DX)—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine.(DY) Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.(DZ) They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.(EA) But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship,(EB) do the work of an evangelist,(EC) discharge all the duties of your ministry.

For I am already being poured out like a drink offering,(ED) and the time for my departure is near.(EE) I have fought the good fight,(EF) I have finished the race,(EG) I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me(EH) the crown of righteousness,(EI) which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day(EJ)—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.(EK)

Personal Remarks

Do your best to come to me quickly,(EL) 10 for Demas,(EM) because he loved this world,(EN) has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica.(EO) Crescens has gone to Galatia,(EP) and Titus(EQ) to Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke(ER) is with me.(ES) Get Mark(ET) and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry. 12 I sent Tychicus(EU) to Ephesus.(EV) 13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas,(EW) and my scrolls, especially the parchments.

14 Alexander(EX) the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he has done.(EY) 15 You too should be on your guard against him, because he strongly opposed our message.

16 At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.(EZ) 17 But the Lord stood at my side(FA) and gave me strength,(FB) so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it.(FC) And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth.(FD) 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack(FE) and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom.(FF) To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.(FG)

Final Greetings

19 Greet Priscilla[b] and Aquila(FH) and the household of Onesiphorus.(FI) 20 Erastus(FJ) stayed in Corinth, and I left Trophimus(FK) sick in Miletus.(FL) 21 Do your best to get here before winter.(FM) Eubulus greets you, and so do Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brothers and sisters.[c]

22 The Lord be with your spirit.(FN) Grace be with you all.(FO)
