10 And I, Paul, myself, do call upon you -- through the meekness and gentleness of the Christ -- who in presence, indeed [am] humble among you, and being absent, have courage toward you,

and I beseech [you], that, being present, I may not have courage, with the confidence with which I reckon to be bold against certain reckoning us as walking according to the flesh;

for walking in the flesh, not according to the flesh do we war,

for the weapons of our warfare [are] not fleshly, but powerful to God for bringing down of strongholds,

reasonings bringing down, and every high thing lifted up against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of the Christ,

and being in readiness to avenge every disobedience, whenever your obedience may be fulfilled.

The things in presence do ye see? if any one hath trusted in himself to be Christ's, this let him reckon again from himself, that according as he is Christ's, so also we [are] Christ's;

for even if also anything more abundantly I shall boast concerning our authority, that the Lord gave us for building up, and not for casting you down, I shall not be ashamed;

that I may not seem as if I would terrify you through the letters,

10 `because the letters indeed -- saith one -- [are] weighty and strong, and the bodily presence weak, and the speech despicable.'

11 This one -- let him reckon thus: that such as we are in word, through letters, being absent, such also, being present, [we are] in deed.

12 For we do not make bold to rank or to compare ourselves with certain of those commending themselves, but they, among themselves measuring themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are not wise,

13 and we in regard to the unmeasured things will not boast ourselves, but after the measure of the line that the God of measure did appoint to us -- to reach even unto you;

14 for not as not reaching to you do we stretch ourselves overmuch, for even unto you did we come in the good news of the Christ,

15 not boasting of the things not measured, in other men's labours, and having hope -- your faith increasing -- in you to be enlarged, according to our line -- into abundance,

16 in the [places] beyond you to proclaim good news, not in another's line in regard to the things made ready, to boast;

17 and he who is boasting -- in the Lord let him boast;

18 for not he who is commending himself is approved, but he whom the Lord doth commend.

11 O that ye were bearing with me a little of the folly, but ye also do bear with me:

for I am zealous for you with zeal of God, for I did betroth you to one husband, a pure virgin, to present to Christ,

and I fear, lest, as the serpent did beguile Eve in his subtilty, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that [is] in the Christ;

for if, indeed, he who is coming doth preach another Jesus whom we did not preach, or another Spirit ye receive which ye did not receive, or other good news which ye did not accept -- well were ye bearing [it],

for I reckon that I have been nothing behind the very chiefest apostles,

and even if unlearned in word -- yet not in knowledge, but in every thing we were made manifest in all things to you.

The sin did I do -- myself humbling that ye might be exalted, because freely the good news of God I did proclaim to you?

other assemblies I did rob, having taken wages, for your ministration;

and being present with you, and having been in want, I was chargeable to no one, for my lack did the brethren supply -- having come from Macedonia -- and in everything burdenless to you I did keep myself, and will keep.

10 The truth of Christ is in me, because this boasting shall not be stopped in regard to me in the regions of Achaia;

11 wherefore? because I do not love you? God hath known!

12 and what I do, I also will do, that I may cut off the occasion of those wishing an occasion, that in that which they boast they may be found according as we also;

13 for those such [are] false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ,

14 and no wonder -- for even the Adversary doth transform himself into a messenger of light;

15 no great thing, then, if also his ministrants do transform themselves as ministrants of righteousness -- whose end shall be according to their works.

16 Again I say, may no one think me to be a fool; and if otherwise, even as a fool receive me, that I also a little may boast.

17 That which I speak, I speak not according to the Lord, but as in foolishness, in this the confidence of boasting;

18 since many boast according to the flesh, I also will boast:

19 for gladly do ye bear with the fools -- being wise,

20 for ye bear, if any one is bringing you under bondage, if any one doth devour, if any one doth take away, if any one doth exalt himself, if any one on the face doth smite you;

21 in reference to dishonour I speak, how that we were weak, and in whatever any one is bold -- in foolishness I say [it] -- I also am bold.

22 Hebrews are they? I also! Israelites are they? I also! seed of Abraham are they? I also!

23 ministrants of Christ are they? -- as beside myself I speak -- I more; in labours more abundantly, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths many times;

24 from Jews five times forty [stripes] save one I did receive;

25 thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice was I shipwrecked, a night and a day in the deep I have passed;

26 journeyings many times, perils of rivers, perils of robbers, perils from kindred, perils from nations, perils in city, perils in wilderness, perils in sea, perils among false brethren;

27 in laboriousness and painfulness, in watchings many times, in hunger and thirst, in fastings many times, in cold and nakedness;

28 apart from the things without -- the crowding upon me that is daily -- the care of all the assemblies.

29 Who is infirm, and I am not infirm? who is stumbled, and I am not fired;

30 if to boast it behoveth [me], of the things of my infirmity I will boast;

31 the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ -- who is blessed to the ages -- hath known that I do not lie! --

32 In Damascus the ethnarch of Aretas the king was watching the city of the Damascenes, wishing to seize me,

33 and through a window in a rope basket I was let down, through the wall, and fled out of his hands.

12 To boast, really, is not profitable for me, for I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.

I have known a man in Christ, fourteen years ago -- whether in the body I have not known, whether out of the body I have not known, God hath known -- such an one being caught away unto the third heaven;

and I have known such a man -- whether in the body, whether out of the body, I have not known, God hath known, --

that he was caught away to the paradise, and heard unutterable sayings, that it is not possible for man to speak.

Of such an one I will boast, and of myself I will not boast, except in my infirmities,

for if I may wish to boast, I shall not be a fool, for truth I will say; but I forebear, lest any one in regard to me may think anything above what he doth see me, or doth hear anything of me;

and that by the exceeding greatness of the revelations I might not be exalted overmuch, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of the Adversary, that he might buffet me, that I might not be exalted overmuch.

Concerning this thing thrice the Lord did I call upon, that it might depart from me,

and He said to me, `Sufficient for thee is My grace, for My power in infirmity is perfected;' most gladly, therefore, will I rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of the Christ may rest on me:

10 wherefore I am well pleased in infirmities, in damages, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses -- for Christ; for whenever I am infirm, then I am powerful;

11 I have become a fool -- boasting; ye -- ye did compel me; for I ought by you to have been commended, for in nothing was I behind the very chiefest apostles -- even if I am nothing.

12 The signs, indeed, of the apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds,

13 for what is there in which ye were inferior to the rest of the assemblies, except that I myself was not a burden to you? forgive me this injustice!

14 Lo, a third time I am ready to come unto you, and I will not be a burden to you, for I seek not yours, but you, for the children ought not for the parents to lay up, but the parents for the children,

15 and I most gladly will spend and be entirely spent for your souls, even if, more abundantly loving you, less I am loved.

16 And be it [so], I -- I did not burden you, but being crafty, with guile I did take you;

17 any one of those whom I have sent unto you -- by him did I take advantage of you?

18 I entreated Titus, and did send with [him] the brother; did Titus take advantage of you? in the same spirit did we not walk? -- did we not in the same steps?

19 Again, think ye that to you we are making defence? before God in Christ do we speak; and the all things, beloved, [are] for your up-building,

20 for I fear lest, having come, not such as I wish I may find you, and I -- I may be found by you such as ye do not wish, lest there be strifes, envyings, wraths, revelries, evil-speakings, whisperings, puffings up, insurrections,

21 lest again having come, my God may humble me in regard to you, and I may bewail many of those having sinned before, and not having reformed concerning the uncleanness, and whoredom, and lasciviousness, that they did practise.

13 This third time do I come unto you; on the mouth of two witnesses or three shall every saying be established;

I have said before, and I say [it] before, as being present, the second time, and being absent, now, do I write to those having sinned before, and to all the rest, that if I come again, I will not spare,

since a proof ye seek of the Christ speaking in me, who to you is not infirm, but is powerful in you,

for even if he was crucified from infirmity, yet he doth live from the power of God; for we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him from the power of God toward you.

Your ownselves try ye, if ye are in the faith; your ownselves prove ye; do ye not know your ownselves, that Jesus Christ is in you, if ye be not in some respect disapproved of?

and I hope that ye shall know that we -- we are not disapproved of;

and I pray before God that ye do no evil, not that we may appear approved, but that ye may do that which is right, and we may be as disapproved;

for we are not able to do anything against the truth, but for the truth;

for we rejoice when we may be infirm, and ye may be powerful; and this also we pray for -- your perfection!

10 because of this, these things -- being absent -- I write, that being present, I may not treat [any] sharply, according to the authority that the Lord did give me for building up, and not for casting down.

11 Henceforth, brethren, rejoice; be made perfect, be comforted, be of the same mind, be at peace, and the God of the love and peace shall be with you;

12 salute one another in an holy kiss;

13 salute you do all the saints;

14 the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, [is] with you all! Amen.

Paul’s Defense of His Ministry

10 By the humility and gentleness(A) of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul,(B) who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” toward you when away! I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold(C) as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world.(D) For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.(E) The weapons we fight with(F) are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power(G) to demolish strongholds.(H) We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God,(I) and we take captive every thought to make it obedient(J) to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.(K)

You are judging by appearances.[a](L) If anyone is confident that they belong to Christ,(M) they should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as they do.(N) So even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us(O) for building you up rather than tearing you down,(P) I will not be ashamed of it. I do not want to seem to be trying to frighten you with my letters. 10 For some say, “His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive(Q) and his speaking amounts to nothing.”(R) 11 Such people should realize that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present.

12 We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves.(S) When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. 13 We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us,(T) a sphere that also includes you. 14 We are not going too far in our boasting, as would be the case if we had not come to you, for we did get as far as you(U) with the gospel of Christ.(V) 15 Neither do we go beyond our limits(W) by boasting of work done by others.(X) Our hope is that, as your faith continues to grow,(Y) our sphere of activity among you will greatly expand, 16 so that we can preach the gospel(Z) in the regions beyond you.(AA) For we do not want to boast about work already done in someone else’s territory. 17 But, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[b](AB) 18 For it is not the one who commends himself(AC) who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.(AD)

Paul and the False Apostles

11 I hope you will put up with(AE) me in a little foolishness.(AF) Yes, please put up with me! I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband,(AG) to Christ, so that I might present you(AH) as a pure virgin to him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning,(AI) your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached,(AJ) or if you receive a different spirit(AK) from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel(AL) from the one you accepted, you put up with it(AM) easily enough.

I do not think I am in the least inferior to those “super-apostles.”[c](AN) I may indeed be untrained as a speaker,(AO) but I do have knowledge.(AP) We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way. Was it a sin(AQ) for me to lower myself in order to elevate you by preaching the gospel of God(AR) to you free of charge?(AS) I robbed other churches by receiving support from them(AT) so as to serve you. And when I was with you and needed something, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied what I needed.(AU) I have kept myself from being a burden to you(AV) in any way, and will continue to do so. 10 As surely as the truth of Christ is in me,(AW) nobody in the regions of Achaia(AX) will stop this boasting(AY) of mine. 11 Why? Because I do not love you? God knows(AZ) I do!(BA)

12 And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. 13 For such people are false apostles,(BB) deceitful(BC) workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ.(BD) 14 And no wonder, for Satan(BE) himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.(BF)

Paul Boasts About His Sufferings

16 I repeat: Let no one take me for a fool.(BG) But if you do, then tolerate me just as you would a fool, so that I may do a little boasting. 17 In this self-confident boasting I am not talking as the Lord would,(BH) but as a fool.(BI) 18 Since many are boasting in the way the world does,(BJ) I too will boast.(BK) 19 You gladly put up with(BL) fools since you are so wise!(BM) 20 In fact, you even put up with(BN) anyone who enslaves you(BO) or exploits you or takes advantage of you or puts on airs or slaps you in the face. 21 To my shame I admit that we were too weak(BP) for that!

Whatever anyone else dares to boast about—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast about.(BQ) 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I.(BR) Are they Israelites? So am I.(BS) Are they Abraham’s descendants? So am I.(BT) 23 Are they servants of Christ?(BU) (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder,(BV) been in prison more frequently,(BW) been flogged more severely,(BX) and been exposed to death again and again.(BY) 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes(BZ) minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods,(CA) once I was pelted with stones,(CB) three times I was shipwrecked,(CC) I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews,(CD) in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city,(CE) in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers.(CF) 27 I have labored and toiled(CG) and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food;(CH) I have been cold and naked. 28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.(CI) 29 Who is weak, and I do not feel weak?(CJ) Who is led into sin,(CK) and I do not inwardly burn?

30 If I must boast, I will boast(CL) of the things that show my weakness.(CM) 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be praised forever,(CN) knows(CO) that I am not lying. 32 In Damascus the governor under King Aretas had the city of the Damascenes guarded in order to arrest me.(CP) 33 But I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall and slipped through his hands.(CQ)

Paul’s Vision and His Thorn

12 I must go on boasting.(CR) Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations(CS) from the Lord. I know a man in Christ(CT) who fourteen years ago was caught up(CU) to the third heaven.(CV) Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows.(CW) And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows— was caught up(CX) to paradise(CY) and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell. I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses.(CZ) Even if I should choose to boast,(DA) I would not be a fool,(DB) because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say, or because of these surpassingly great revelations.(DC) Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh,(DD) a messenger of Satan,(DE) to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.(DF) But he said to me, “My grace(DG) is sufficient for you, for my power(DH) is made perfect in weakness.(DI)(DJ) Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight(DK) in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships,(DL) in persecutions,(DM) in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.(DN)

Paul’s Concern for the Corinthians

11 I have made a fool of myself,(DO) but you drove me to it. I ought to have been commended by you, for I am not in the least inferior to the “super-apostles,”[d](DP) even though I am nothing.(DQ) 12 I persevered in demonstrating among you the marks of a true apostle, including signs, wonders and miracles.(DR) 13 How were you inferior to the other churches, except that I was never a burden to you?(DS) Forgive me this wrong!(DT)

14 Now I am ready to visit you for the third time,(DU) and I will not be a burden to you, because what I want is not your possessions but you. After all, children should not have to save up for their parents,(DV) but parents for their children.(DW) 15 So I will very gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well.(DX) If I love you more,(DY) will you love me less? 16 Be that as it may, I have not been a burden to you.(DZ) Yet, crafty fellow that I am, I caught you by trickery! 17 Did I exploit you through any of the men I sent to you? 18 I urged(EA) Titus(EB) to go to you and I sent our brother(EC) with him. Titus did not exploit you, did he? Did we not walk in the same footsteps by the same Spirit?

19 Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? We have been speaking in the sight of God(ED) as those in Christ; and everything we do, dear friends,(EE) is for your strengthening.(EF) 20 For I am afraid that when I come(EG) I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be.(EH) I fear that there may be discord,(EI) jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition,(EJ) slander,(EK) gossip,(EL) arrogance(EM) and disorder.(EN) 21 I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved(EO) over many who have sinned earlier(EP) and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery(EQ) in which they have indulged.

Final Warnings

13 This will be my third visit to you.(ER) “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”[e](ES) I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent:(ET) On my return I will not spare(EU) those who sinned earlier(EV) or any of the others, since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me.(EW) He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you. For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness,(EX) yet he lives by God’s power.(EY) Likewise, we are weak(EZ) in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him(FA) in our dealing with you.

Examine yourselves(FB) to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.(FC) Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you(FD)—unless, of course, you fail the test? And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. We are glad whenever we are weak(FE) but you are strong;(FF) and our prayer is that you may be fully restored.(FG) 10 This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh(FH) in my use of authority—the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.(FI)

Final Greetings

11 Finally, brothers and sisters,(FJ) rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace.(FK) And the God of love(FL) and peace(FM) will be with you.

12 Greet one another with a holy kiss.(FN) 13 All God’s people here send their greetings.(FO)

14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,(FP) and the love of God,(FQ) and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit(FR) be with you all.
