¹⁶ As he was talking with him, ^[a]the king said to him, “Have we appointed you to be a royal counselor? Stop! Why should ^[b]you be put to death?” Then the prophet stopped and said, “I know that God has planned to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.”

⁵ Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the ^(A)Lord be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act in accordance with the whole ^[a]message with which the Lord your God will send you to us. ⁶ Whether it is ^[b]pleasant or ^[c]unpleasant, we will ^(B)listen to the voice of the Lord our God to whom we are sending you, so that it may go ^(C)well for us when we listen to the voice of the Lord our God.”

⁵ But ^(A)they did not listen or incline their ears to turn from their wickedness, so as not to burn ^[a]sacrifices to other gods.
