From Paul.

God our Savior and Christ Jesus commanded me to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, who gives us hope.

(A) Timothy, because of our faith, you are like a son to me. I pray that God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ will be kind and merciful to you. May they bless you with peace!

Warning against False Teaching

When I was leaving for Macedonia, I asked you to stay on in Ephesus and warn certain people there to stop spreading their false teachings. You needed to warn them to stop wasting their time on senseless stories and endless lists of ancestors. Such things only cause arguments. They don't help anyone to do God's work that can only be done by faith.

You must teach people to have genuine love, as well as a good conscience and true faith. There are some who have given up these for nothing but empty talk. They want to be teachers of the Law of Moses. But they don't know what they are talking about, even though they think they do.

We know the Law is good, if it is used in the right way. We also understand it wasn't given to control people who please God, but to control lawbreakers, criminals, godless people, and sinners. It is for wicked and evil people, and for murderers, who would even kill their own parents. 10 The Law was written for people who are sexual perverts or who live as homosexuals or are kidnappers or liars or won't tell the truth in court. It is for anything else that opposes the correct teaching 11 of the good news the glorious and wonderful God has given me.

Being Thankful for God's Kindness

12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me the strength for my work because he knew he could trust me. 13 (B) I used to say terrible and insulting things about him, and I was cruel. But Christ had mercy on me because I didn't know what I was doing, and I had not yet put my faith in him. 14 Christ Jesus our Lord treated me with undeserved grace and has greatly blessed my life with faith and love just like his own.

15 “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” This saying is true, and it can be trusted. I was the worst sinner of all! 16 But since I was worse than anyone else, God had mercy on me and let me be an example of the endless patience of Christ Jesus. He did this so that others would put their faith in Christ and have eternal life. 17 I pray that honor and glory will always be given to the only God, who lives forever and is the invisible and eternal King! Amen.

18 Timothy, my son, the instructions I am giving you are based on what some prophets[a] once said about you. If you follow these instructions, you will fight like a good soldier. 19 You will be faithful and have a clear conscience. Some people have made a mess of their faith because they didn't listen to their consciences. 20 Two of them are Hymenaeus and Alexander. I have given these men over to the power of Satan, so they will learn not to oppose God.

How To Pray

First of all, I ask you to pray for everyone. Ask God to help and bless them all, and tell God how thankful you are for each of them. Pray for kings and others in power, so we may live quiet and peaceful lives as we worship and honor God. This kind of prayer is good, and it pleases God our Savior. God wants everyone to be saved and to know the whole truth, which is,

There is only one God,
and Christ Jesus
    is the only one
who can bring us
    to God.
Jesus was truly human,
and he gave himself
    to rescue all of us.
God showed us this
    at the right time.

(C) This is why God chose me to be a preacher and an apostle of the good news. I am telling the truth. I am not lying. God sent me to teach the Gentiles about faith and truth.

I want everyone everywhere to lift innocent hands toward heaven and pray, without being angry or arguing with each other.

(D) I would like for women to wear modest and sensible clothes. They should not have fancy hairdos, or wear expensive clothes, or put on jewelry made of gold or pearls. 10 Women who claim to love God should do helpful things for others, 11 and they should learn by being quiet and paying attention. 12 They should be silent and not be allowed to teach or to tell men what to do. 13 (E) After all, Adam was created before Eve, 14 (F) and the man Adam wasn't the one who was fooled. It was the woman Eve who was completely fooled and sinned. 15 But women will be saved by having children,[b] if they stay faithful, loving, holy, and modest.

Church Officials

It is true that[c] anyone who desires to be a church official[d] wants to be something worthwhile. (G) That's why officials must have a good reputation and be faithful in marriage.[e] They must be self-controlled, sensible, well-behaved, friendly to strangers, and able to teach. They must not be heavy drinkers or troublemakers. Instead, they must be kind and gentle and not love money.

Church officials must be in control of their own families, and they must see that their children are obedient and always respectful. If they don't know how to control their own families, how can they look after God's people?

They must not be new followers of the Lord. If they are, they might become proud and be doomed along with the devil. Finally, they must be well-respected by people who are not followers. Then they won't be trapped and disgraced by the devil.

Church Officers

Church officers[f] should be serious. They must not be liars, heavy drinkers, or greedy for money. And they must have a clear conscience and hold firmly to what God has shown us about our faith. 10 They must first prove themselves. Then if no one has anything against them, they can serve as officers.

11 Women[g] must also be serious. They must not gossip or be heavy drinkers, and they must be faithful in everything they do.

12 Church officers must be faithful in marriage.[h] They must be in full control of their children and everyone else in their home. 13 Those who serve well as officers will earn a good reputation and will be highly respected for their faith in Christ Jesus.

The Mystery of Our Religion

14 I hope to visit you soon. But I am writing these instructions, 15 so if I am delayed, you will know how everyone who belongs to God's family ought to behave. After all, the church of the living God is the strong foundation of truth.

16 Here is the great mystery of our religion:

Christ[i] came as a human.
The Spirit proved
    that he pleased God,
and he was seen by angels.

Christ was preached
    to the nations.
People in this world
    put their faith in him,
and he was taken up to glory.

Footnotes

  1. 1.18 prophets: Probably the Christian prophets referred to in 4.14.
  2. 2.15 saved by having children: Or “brought safely through childbirth” or “saved by the birth of a child” (that is, by the birth of Jesus) or “saved by being good mothers.”
  3. 3.1 It is true that: These words may be taken with 2.15. If so, that verse would be translated: “It is true that women will be saved … holy, and modest.” And 3.1 would be translated, “Anyone who desires … something worthwhile.”
  4. 3.1 church official: Or “bishop.”
  5. 3.2 be faithful in marriage: Or “be the husband of only one wife.”
  6. 3.8 Church officers: Or “Deacons.”
  7. 3.11 Women: Either church officers or the wives of church officers.
  8. 3.12 be faithful in marriage: See the note at 3.2.
  9. 3.16 Christ: The Greek text has “he,” probably meaning “Christ.” Some manuscripts have “God.”

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God(A) our Savior(B) and of Christ Jesus our hope,(C)

To Timothy(D) my true son(E) in the faith:

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.(F)

Timothy Charged to Oppose False Teachers

As I urged you when I went into Macedonia,(G) stay there in Ephesus(H) so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines(I) any longer or to devote themselves to myths(J) and endless genealogies.(K) Such things promote controversial speculations(L) rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart(M) and a good conscience(N) and a sincere faith.(O) Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers(P) of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.(Q)

We know that the law is good(R) if one uses it properly. We also know that the law is made not for the righteous(S) but for lawbreakers and rebels,(T) the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine(U) 11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.(V)

The Lord’s Grace to Paul

12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength,(W) that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service.(X) 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor(Y) and a violent man, I was shown mercy(Z) because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.(AA) 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly,(AB) along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.(AC)

15 Here is a trustworthy saying(AD) that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners(AE)—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy(AF) so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience(AG) as an example for those who would believe(AH) in him and receive eternal life.(AI) 17 Now to the King(AJ) eternal, immortal,(AK) invisible,(AL) the only God,(AM) be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.(AN)

The Charge to Timothy Renewed

18 Timothy, my son,(AO) I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you,(AP) so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well,(AQ) 19 holding on to faith and a good conscience,(AR) which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith.(AS) 20 Among them are Hymenaeus(AT) and Alexander,(AU) whom I have handed over to Satan(AV) to be taught not to blaspheme.

Instructions on Worship

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers,(AW) intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority,(AX) that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness(AY) and holiness. This is good, and pleases(AZ) God our Savior,(BA) who wants(BB) all people(BC) to be saved(BD) and to come to a knowledge of the truth.(BE) For there is one God(BF) and one mediator(BG) between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,(BH) who gave himself as a ransom(BI) for all people. This has now been witnessed to(BJ) at the proper time.(BK) And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying(BL)—and a true and faithful teacher(BM) of the Gentiles.(BN)

Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands(BO) without anger or disputing. I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,(BP) 10 but with good deeds,(BQ) appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

11 A woman[a] should learn in quietness and full submission.(BR) 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[b] she must be quiet.(BS) 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.(BT) 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.(BU) 15 But women[c] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love(BV) and holiness with propriety.

Qualifications for Overseers and Deacons

Here is a trustworthy saying:(BW) Whoever aspires to be an overseer(BX) desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach,(BY) faithful to his wife,(BZ) temperate,(CA) self-controlled, respectable, hospitable,(CB) able to teach,(CC) not given to drunkenness,(CD) not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome,(CE) not a lover of money.(CF) He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full[d] respect.(CG) (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)(CH) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited(CI) and fall under the same judgment(CJ) as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders,(CK) so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.(CL)

In the same way, deacons[e](CM) are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine,(CN) and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.(CO) 10 They must first be tested;(CP) and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.

11 In the same way, the women[f] are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers(CQ) but temperate(CR) and trustworthy in everything.

12 A deacon must be faithful to his wife(CS) and must manage his children and his household well.(CT) 13 Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.

Reasons for Paul’s Instructions

14 Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, 15 if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church(CU) of the living God,(CV) the pillar and foundation of the truth. 16 Beyond all question, the mystery(CW) from which true godliness(CX) springs is great:

He appeared in the flesh,(CY)
    was vindicated by the Spirit,[g]
was seen by angels,
    was preached among the nations,(CZ)
was believed on in the world,
    was taken up in glory.(DA)
