1 Thessalonians 1 - Hebrews 4
New King James Version
Greeting
1 Paul, (A)Silvanus, and Timothy,
To the church of the (B)Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
Grace to you and peace [a]from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Their Good Example
2 (C)We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers, 3 remembering without ceasing (D)your work of faith, (E)labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father, 4 knowing, beloved brethren, (F)your election by God. 5 For (G)our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, (H)and in the Holy Spirit (I)and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.
6 And (J)you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, (K)with joy of the Holy Spirit, 7 so that you became examples to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe. 8 For from you the word of the Lord (L)has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also (M)in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything. 9 For they themselves declare concerning us (N)what manner of entry we had to you, (O)and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and (P)to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us (Q)from the wrath to come.
Paul’s Conduct(R)
2 For you yourselves know, brethren, that our coming to you was not in vain. 2 But [b]even after we had suffered before and were spitefully treated at (S)Philippi, as you know, we were (T)bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God in much conflict. 3 (U)For our exhortation did not come from error or uncleanness, nor was it in deceit.
4 But as (V)we have been approved by God (W)to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, (X)not as pleasing men, but God (Y)who tests our hearts. 5 For (Z)neither at any time did we use flattering words, as you know, nor a [c]cloak for covetousness—(AA)God is witness. 6 (AB)Nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others, when (AC)we might have (AD)made demands (AE)as apostles of Christ. 7 But (AF)we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children. 8 So, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased (AG)to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also (AH)our own lives, because you had become dear to us. 9 For you remember, brethren, our (AI)labor and toil; for laboring night and day, (AJ)that we might not be a burden to any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God.
10 (AK)You are witnesses, and God also, (AL)how devoutly and justly and blamelessly we behaved ourselves among you who believe; 11 as you know how we exhorted, and comforted, and [d]charged every one of you, as a father does his own children, 12 (AM)that you would walk worthy of God (AN)who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.
Their Conversion
13 For this reason we also thank God (AO)without ceasing, because when you (AP)received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it (AQ)not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively (AR)works in you who believe. 14 For you, brethren, became imitators (AS)of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus. For (AT)you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, just as they did from the Judeans, 15 (AU)who killed both the Lord Jesus and (AV)their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they do not please God (AW)and are [e]contrary to all men, 16 (AX)forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved, so as always (AY)to fill up the measure of their sins; (AZ)but wrath has come upon them to the uttermost.
Longing to See Them
17 But we, brethren, having been taken away from you for a short time (BA)in presence, not in heart, endeavored more eagerly to see your face with great desire. 18 Therefore we wanted to come to you—even I, Paul, time and again—but (BB)Satan hindered us. 19 For (BC)what is our hope, or joy, or (BD)crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the (BE)presence of our Lord Jesus Christ (BF)at His coming? 20 For you are our glory and joy.
Concern for Their Faith
3 Therefore, when we could no longer endure it, we thought it good to be left in Athens alone, 2 and sent (BG)Timothy, our brother and minister of God, and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you and encourage you concerning your faith, 3 (BH)that no one should be shaken by these afflictions; for you yourselves know that (BI)we are appointed to this. 4 (BJ)For, in fact, we told you before when we were with you that we would suffer tribulation, just as it happened, and you know. 5 For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, (BK)lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and (BL)our labor might be in vain.
Encouraged by Timothy
6 (BM)But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and brought us good news of your faith and love, and that you always have good remembrance of us, greatly desiring to see us, (BN)as we also to see you— 7 therefore, brethren, in all our affliction and distress (BO)we were comforted concerning you by your faith. 8 For now we live, if you (BP)stand fast in the Lord.
9 For what thanks can we render to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sake before our God, 10 night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face (BQ)and perfect what is lacking in your faith?
Prayer for the Church
11 Now may our God and Father Himself, and our Lord Jesus Christ, (BR)direct our way to you. 12 And may the Lord make you increase and (BS)abound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you, 13 so that He may establish (BT)your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints.
Plea for Purity
4 Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus (BU)that you should abound more and more, (BV)just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God; 2 for you know what commandments we gave you through the Lord Jesus.
3 For this is (BW)the will of God, (BX)your sanctification: (BY)that you should abstain from sexual immorality; 4 (BZ)that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 (CA)not in passion of lust, (CB)like the Gentiles (CC)who do not know God; 6 that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord (CD)is the avenger of all such, as we also forewarned you and testified. 7 For God did not call us to uncleanness, (CE)but in holiness. 8 (CF)Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, (CG)who[f] has also given us His Holy Spirit.
A Brotherly and Orderly Life
9 But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you, for (CH)you yourselves are taught by God (CI)to love one another; 10 and indeed you do so toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, (CJ)that you increase more and more; 11 that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, (CK)to mind your own business, and (CL)to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, 12 (CM)that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.
The Comfort of Christ’s Coming
13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen [g]asleep, lest you sorrow (CN)as others (CO)who have no hope. 14 For (CP)if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him (CQ)those who [h]sleep in Jesus.
15 For this we say to you (CR)by the word of the Lord, that (CS)we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are [i]asleep. 16 For (CT)the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with (CU)the trumpet of God. (CV)And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 (CW)Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them (CX)in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus (CY)we shall always be with the Lord. 18 (CZ)Therefore comfort one another with these words.
The Day of the Lord
5 But concerning (DA)the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. 2 For you yourselves know perfectly that (DB)the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. 3 For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then (DC)sudden destruction comes upon them, (DD)as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. 4 (DE)But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all (DF)sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 (DG)Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but (DH)let us watch and be [j]sober. 7 For (DI)those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk (DJ)are drunk at night. 8 But let us who are of the day be sober, (DK)putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For (DL)God did not appoint us to wrath, (DM)but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 (DN)who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.
11 Therefore [k]comfort each other and [l]edify one another, just as you also are doing.
Various Exhortations
12 And we urge you, brethren, (DO)to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and [m]admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. (DP)Be at peace among yourselves.
14 Now we [n]exhort you, brethren, (DQ)warn those who are [o]unruly, (DR)comfort the fainthearted, (DS)uphold the weak, (DT)be patient with all. 15 (DU)See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always (DV)pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.
16 (DW)Rejoice always, 17 (DX)pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
19 (DY)Do not quench the Spirit. 20 (DZ)Do not despise prophecies. 21 (EA)Test all things; (EB)hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.
Blessing and Admonition
23 Now may (EC)the God of peace Himself (ED)sanctify[p] you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body (EE)be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is (EF)faithful, who also will (EG)do it.
25 Brethren, pray for us.
26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.
27 I charge you by the Lord that this [q]epistle be read to all the [r]holy brethren.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
Greeting
1 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy,
To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
2 (EH)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
God’s Final Judgment and Glory
3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other, 4 so that (EI)we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God (EJ)for your patience and faith (EK)in all your persecutions and [s]tribulations that you endure, 5 which is (EL)manifest[t] evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, (EM)for which you also suffer; 6 (EN)since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with [u]tribulation those who trouble you, 7 and to give you who are troubled (EO)rest with us when (EP)the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 (EQ)These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and (ER)from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes, in that Day, (ES)to be (ET)glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who [v]believe, because our testimony among you was believed.
11 Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would (EU)count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and (EV)the work of faith with power, 12 (EW)that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Great Apostasy
2 Now, brethren, (EX)concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (EY)and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, 2 (EZ)not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of [w]Christ had come. 3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come (FA)unless the falling away comes first, and (FB)the man of [x]sin is revealed, (FC)the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and (FD)exalts himself (FE)above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits [y]as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.
5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? 6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. 7 For (FF)the [z]mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only [aa]He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, (FG)whom the Lord will consume (FH)with the breath of His mouth and destroy (FI)with the brightness of His coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one is (FJ)according to the working of Satan, with all power, (FK)signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among (FL)those who perish, because they did not receive (FM)the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And (FN)for this reason God will send them strong delusion, (FO)that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but (FP)had pleasure in unrighteousness.
Stand Fast
13 But we are [ab]bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God (FQ)from the beginning (FR)chose you for salvation (FS)through [ac]sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, 14 to which He called you by our gospel, for (FT)the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 Therefore, brethren, (FU)stand fast and hold (FV)the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our [ad]epistle.
16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, (FW)who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and (FX)good hope by grace, 17 comfort your hearts (FY)and [ae]establish you in every good word and work.
Pray for Us
3 Finally, brethren, (FZ)pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you, 2 and (GA)that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men; (GB)for not all have faith.
3 But (GC)the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and (GD)guard you from the evil one. 4 And (GE)we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, both that you do and will do the things we command you.
5 Now may (GF)the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ.
Warning Against Idleness
6 But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, (GG)that you withdraw (GH)from every brother who walks (GI)disorderly and not according to the tradition which [af]he received from us. 7 For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly among you; 8 nor did we eat anyone’s bread [ag]free of charge, but worked with (GJ)labor and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, 9 not because we do not have (GK)authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us.
10 For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. 11 For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are (GL)busybodies. 12 Now those who are such we command and [ah]exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ (GM)that they work in quietness and eat their own bread.
13 But as for you, brethren, (GN)do not grow weary in doing good. 14 And if anyone does not obey our word in this [ai]epistle, note that person and (GO)do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. 15 (GP)Yet do not count him as an enemy, (GQ)but [aj]admonish him as a brother.
Benediction
16 Now may (GR)the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with you all.
17 (GS)The salutation of Paul with my own hand, which is a sign in every [ak]epistle; so I write.
18 (GT)The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
Greeting
1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope,
2 To Timothy, a (GU)true son in the faith:
(GV)Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
No Other Doctrine
3 As I urged you (GW)when I went into Macedonia—remain in Ephesus that you may [al]charge some (GX)that they teach no other doctrine, 4 (GY)nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. 5 Now (GZ)the purpose of the commandment is love (HA)from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from [am]sincere faith, 6 from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to (HB)idle talk, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm.
8 But we know that the law is (HC)good if one uses it lawfully, 9 knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is [an]contrary to sound doctrine, 11 according to the glorious gospel of the (HD)blessed God which was (HE)committed to my trust.
Glory to God for His Grace(HF)
12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has (HG)enabled me, (HH)because He counted me faithful, (HI)putting me into the ministry, 13 although (HJ)I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an [ao]insolent man; but I obtained mercy because (HK)I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 14 (HL)And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, (HM)with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 15 (HN)This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that (HO)Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. 16 However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life. 17 Now to (HP)the King eternal, (HQ)immortal, (HR)invisible, to [ap]God (HS)who alone is wise, (HT)be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
Fight the Good Fight
18 This [aq]charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, 20 of whom are (HU)Hymenaeus and (HV)Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to (HW)blaspheme.
Pray for All Men
2 Therefore I [ar]exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 (HX)for kings and (HY)all who are in [as]authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and [at]reverence. 3 For this is (HZ)good and acceptable in the sight (IA)of God our Savior, 4 (IB)who desires all men to be saved (IC)and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 (ID)For there is one God and (IE)one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 6 (IF)who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, 7 (IG)for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle—I am speaking the truth [au]in Christ and not lying—(IH)a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
Men and Women in the Church
8 I desire therefore that the men pray (II)everywhere, (IJ)lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; 9 in like manner also, that the (IK)women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and [av]moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 (IL)but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. 11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. 12 And (IM)I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. 15 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.
Qualifications of Overseers
3 This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a [aw]bishop, he desires a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; 3 not [ax]given to wine, not violent, [ay]not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not [az]covetous; 4 one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence 5 (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); 6 not a [ba]novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the (IN)snare of the devil.
Qualifications of Deacons
8 Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, (IO)not given to much wine, not greedy for money, 9 holding the [bb]mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. 10 But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. 11 Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not [bc]slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For those who have served well as deacons (IP)obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
The Great Mystery
14 These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; 15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and [bd]ground of the truth. 16 And without controversy great is the [be]mystery of godliness:
(IQ)God[bf] was manifested in the flesh,
(IR)Justified in the Spirit,
(IS)Seen by angels,
(IT)Preached among the Gentiles,
(IU)Believed on in the world,
(IV)Received up in glory.
The Great Apostasy
4 Now the Spirit [bg]expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed (IW)to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 (IX)speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience (IY)seared with a hot iron, 3 forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; 5 for it is [bh]sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
A Good Servant of Jesus Christ
6 If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, (IZ)nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed. 7 But (JA)reject profane and old wives’ fables, and (JB)exercise yourself toward godliness. 8 For (JC)bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, (JD)having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance. 10 For to this end [bi]we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, (JE)who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. 11 These things command and teach.
Take Heed to Your Ministry
12 Let no one [bj]despise your youth, but be an (JF)example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, [bk]in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to [bl]doctrine. 14 (JG)Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy (JH)with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. 15 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. 16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
Treatment of Church Members
5 Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity.
Honor True Widows
3 Honor widows who are really widows. 4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and (JI)to repay their parents; for this is [bm]good and acceptable before God. 5 Now she who is really a widow, and left alone, trusts in God and continues in supplications and prayers (JJ)night and day. 6 But she who lives in [bn]pleasure is dead while she lives. 7 And these things command, that they may be blameless. 8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, (JK)and especially for those of his household, (JL)he has denied the faith (JM)and is worse than an unbeliever.
9 Do not let a widow under sixty years old be taken into the number, and not unless she has been the wife of one man, 10 well reported for good works: if she has brought up children, if she has lodged strangers, if she has washed the saints’ feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work.
11 But [bo]refuse the younger widows; for when they have begun to grow wanton against Christ, they desire to marry, 12 having condemnation because they have cast off their first [bp]faith. 13 And besides they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not. 14 Therefore I desire that the younger widows marry, bear children, manage the house, give no opportunity to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 15 For some have already turned aside after Satan. 16 If any believing [bq]man or woman has widows, let them [br]relieve them, and do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows.
Honor the Elders
17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. 18 For the Scripture says, (JN)“You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,” and, (JO)“The laborer is worthy of his wages.” 19 Do not receive an accusation against an elder except (JP)from two or three witnesses. 20 Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear.
21 I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the [bs]elect angels that you observe these things without (JQ)prejudice, doing nothing with partiality. 22 Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor (JR)share in other people’s sins; keep yourself pure.
23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent [bt]infirmities.
24 Some men’s sins are (JS)clearly evident, preceding them to judgment, but those of some men follow later. 25 Likewise, the good works of some are clearly evident, and those that are otherwise cannot be hidden.
Honor Masters
6 Let as many (JT)bondservants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and His doctrine may not be blasphemed. 2 And those who have believing masters, let them not despise them because they are brethren, but rather serve them because those who are benefited are believers and beloved. Teach and exhort these things.
Error and Greed
3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to (JU)wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, (JV)and to the [bu]doctrine which accords with godliness, 4 he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, 5 [bv]useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. [bw]From (JW)such withdraw yourself.
6 Now godliness with (JX)contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, [bx]and it is (JY)certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be (JZ)content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
The Good Confession
11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus (KA)who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14 that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, 15 which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only [by]Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in (KB)unapproachable light, (KC)whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.
Instructions to the Rich
17 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain (KD)riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things (KE)to enjoy. 18 Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, 19 (KF)storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
Guard the Faith
20 O Timothy! (KG)Guard what was committed to your trust, (KH)avoiding the profane and [bz]idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge— 21 by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith.
Grace be with you. Amen.
Greeting
1 Paul, an apostle of [ca]Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the (KI)promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,
2 To Timothy, a (KJ)beloved son:
Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
Timothy’s Faith and Heritage
3 I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my (KK)forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, 4 greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, 5 when I call to remembrance (KL)the [cb]genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and (KM)your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. 6 Therefore I remind you (KN)to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For (KO)God has not given us a spirit of fear, (KP)but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
Not Ashamed of the Gospel
8 (KQ)Therefore do not be ashamed of (KR)the testimony of our Lord, nor of me (KS)His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, 9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, (KT)not according to our works, but (KU)according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus (KV)before time began, 10 but (KW)has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11 (KX)to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher [cc]of the Gentiles. 12 For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, (KY)for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.
Be Loyal to the Faith
13 (KZ)Hold fast (LA)the pattern of (LB)sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 14 That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.
15 This you know, that all those in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. 16 The Lord grant mercy to the (LC)household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; 17 but when he arrived in Rome, he sought me out very zealously and found me. 18 The Lord (LD)grant to him that he may find mercy from the Lord (LE)in that Day—and you know very well how many ways he (LF)ministered [cd]to me at Ephesus.
Be Strong in Grace
2 You therefore, (LG)my son, (LH)be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 3 You therefore must (LI)endure[ce] hardship (LJ)as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4 (LK)No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. 5 And also (LL)if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. 6 The hardworking farmer must be first to partake of the crops. 7 Consider what I say, and [cf]may the Lord (LM)give you understanding in all things.
8 Remember that Jesus Christ, (LN)of the seed of David, (LO)was raised from the dead (LP)according to my gospel, 9 (LQ)for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, (LR)even to the point of chains; (LS)but the word of God is not chained. 10 Therefore (LT)I endure all things for the sake of the [cg]elect, (LU)that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
11 This is a faithful saying:
For (LV)if we died with Him,
We shall also live with Him.
12 (LW)If we endure,
We shall also reign with Him.
(LX)If we deny Him,
He also will deny us.
13 If we are faithless,
He remains faithful;
He (LY)cannot deny Himself.
Approved and Disapproved Workers
14 Remind them of these things, (LZ)charging them before the Lord not to [ch]strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers. 15 (MA)Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and [ci]idle babblings, for they will [cj]increase to more ungodliness. 17 And their message will spread like cancer. (MB)Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, 18 who have strayed concerning the truth, (MC)saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. 19 Nevertheless (MD)the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord (ME)knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of [ck]Christ depart from iniquity.”
20 But in a great house there are not only (MF)vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. 21 Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, [cl]sanctified and useful for the Master, (MG)prepared for every good work. 22 (MH)Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23 But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife. 24 And (MI)a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, (MJ)able to teach, (MK)patient, 25 (ML)in humility correcting those who are in opposition, (MM)if God perhaps will grant them repentance, (MN)so that they may know the truth, 26 and that they may come to their senses and (MO)escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
Perilous Times and Perilous Men
3 But know this, that (MP)in the last days [cm]perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, [cn]unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 (MQ)traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 (MR)having a form of godliness but (MS)denying its power. And (MT)from such people turn away! 6 For (MU)of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, 7 always learning and never able (MV)to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 (MW)Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: (MX)men of corrupt minds, (MY)disapproved concerning the faith; 9 but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, (MZ)as theirs also was.
The Man of God and the Word of God
10 (NA)But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, 11 persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me (NB)at Antioch, (NC)at Iconium, (ND)at Lystra—what persecutions I endured. And (NE)out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12 Yes, and (NF)all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 13 (NG)But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you must (NH)continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known (NI)the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 (NJ)All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, (NK)and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for [co]instruction in righteousness, 17 (NL)that the man of God may be complete, (NM)thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Preach the Word
4 I (NN)charge you [cp]therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, (NO)who will judge the living and the dead [cq]at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. (NP)Convince, (NQ)rebuke, (NR)exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 (NS)For the time will come when they will not endure (NT)sound doctrine, (NU)but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and (NV)be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, (NW)endure afflictions, do the work of (NX)an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
Paul’s Valedictory
6 For (NY)I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of (NZ)my departure is at hand. 7 (OA)I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me (OB)the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous (OC)Judge, will give to me (OD)on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.
The Abandoned Apostle
9 Be diligent to come to me quickly; 10 for (OE)Demas has forsaken me, (OF)having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica—Crescens for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Get (OG)Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry. 12 And (OH)Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus. 13 Bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas when you come—and the books, especially the parchments.
14 (OI)Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm. May the Lord repay him according to his works. 15 You also must beware of him, for he has greatly resisted our words.
16 At my first defense no one stood with me, but all forsook me. (OJ)May it not be charged against them.
The Lord Is Faithful
17 (OK)But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, (OL)so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. Also I was delivered (OM)out of the mouth of the lion. 18 (ON)And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. (OO)To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!
Come Before Winter
19 Greet (OP)Prisca and Aquila, and the household of (OQ)Onesiphorus. 20 (OR)Erastus stayed in Corinth, but (OS)Trophimus I have left in Miletus sick.
21 Do your utmost to come before winter.
Eubulus greets you, as well as Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brethren.
Farewell
22 The Lord [cr]Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.
Greeting
1 Paul, a bondservant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect and (OT)the acknowledgment of the truth (OU)which accords with godliness, 2 in hope of eternal life which God, who (OV)cannot lie, promised before time began, 3 but has in due time manifested His word through preaching, which was committed to me according to the commandment of God our Savior;
4 To (OW)Titus, a true son in our common faith:
Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and [cs]the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.
Qualified Elders
5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should (OX)set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you— 6 if a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, (OY)having faithful children not accused of [ct]dissipation or insubordination. 7 For a [cu]bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, (OZ)not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, 8 but hospitable, a lover of what is good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled, 9 holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.
The Elders’ Task
10 For there are many insubordinate, both idle (PA)talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, 11 whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, (PB)for the sake of dishonest gain. 12 (PC)One of them, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13 This testimony is true. (PD)Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, 14 not giving heed to Jewish fables and (PE)commandments of men who turn from the truth. 15 (PF)To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled. 16 They profess to (PG)know God, but (PH)in works they deny Him, being [cv]abominable, disobedient, (PI)and disqualified for every good work.
Qualities of a Sound Church
2 But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: 2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; 3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things— 4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, (PJ)homemakers, good, (PK)obedient to their own husbands, (PL)that the word of God may not be blasphemed.
6 Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7 in all things showing yourself to be (PM)a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, (PN)incorruptibility,[cw] 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of [cx]you.
9 Exhort (PO)bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back, 10 not [cy]pilfering, but showing all good [cz]fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.
Trained by Saving Grace
11 For (PP)the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 (PQ)looking for the blessed (PR)hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 (PS)who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed (PT)and purify for Himself (PU)His own special people, zealous for good works.
15 Speak these things, (PV)exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you.
Graces of the Heirs of Grace
3 Remind them (PW)to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, (PX)to be ready for every good work, 2 to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men. 3 For (PY)we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. 4 But when (PZ)the kindness and the love of (QA)God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 (QB)not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through (QC)the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 (QD)whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 that having been justified by His grace (QE)we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
8 (QF)This is a faithful saying, and these things I want you to affirm constantly, that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men.
Avoid Dissension
9 But (QG)avoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and useless. 10 (QH)Reject a divisive man after the first and second [da]admonition, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned.
Final Messages
12 When I send Artemas to you, or (QI)Tychicus, be diligent to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. 13 Send Zenas the lawyer and (QJ)Apollos on their journey with haste, that they may lack nothing. 14 And let our people also learn to maintain good works, to meet urgent needs, that they may not be unfruitful.
Farewell
15 All who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us in the faith.
Grace be with you all. Amen.
Greeting
1 Paul, a (QK)prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother,
To Philemon our beloved friend and fellow laborer, 2 to [db]the beloved Apphia, (QL)Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house:
3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Philemon’s Love and Faith
4 (QM)I thank my God, making mention of you always in my prayers, 5 (QN)hearing of your love and faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints, 6 that the sharing of your faith may become effective (QO)by the acknowledgment of (QP)every good thing which is in [dc]you in Christ Jesus. 7 For we [dd]have great [de]joy and [df]consolation in your love, because the [dg]hearts of the saints have been refreshed by you, brother.
The Plea for Onesimus
8 Therefore, though I might be very bold in Christ to command you what is fitting, 9 yet for love’s sake I rather appeal to you—being such a one as Paul, the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ— 10 I appeal to you for my son (QQ)Onesimus, whom I have begotten while in my chains, 11 who once was unprofitable to you, but now is profitable to you and to me.
12 I am sending him [dh]back. You therefore receive him, that is, my own [di]heart, 13 whom I wished to keep with me, that on your behalf he might minister to me in my chains for the gospel. 14 But without your consent I wanted to do nothing, (QR)that your good deed might not be by compulsion, as it were, but voluntary.
15 For perhaps he departed for a while for this purpose, that you might receive him forever, 16 no longer as a slave but more than a slave—a beloved brother, especially to me but how much more to you, both in the (QS)flesh and in the Lord.
Philemon’s Obedience Encouraged
17 If then you count me as a partner, receive him as you would me. 18 But if he has wronged you or owes anything, put that on my account. 19 I, Paul, am writing with my own (QT)hand. I will repay—not to mention to you that you owe me even your own self besides. 20 Yes, brother, let me have joy from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in the Lord.
21 (QU)Having confidence in your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. 22 But, meanwhile, also prepare a guest room for me, for (QV)I trust that (QW)through your prayers I shall be granted to you.
Farewell
23 (QX)Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you, 24 as do (QY)Mark, (QZ)Aristarchus, (RA)Demas, (RB)Luke, my fellow laborers.
25 (RC)The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
God’s Supreme Revelation(RD)
1 God, who [dj]at various times and (RE)in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the [dk]worlds; 3 (RF)who being the brightness of His glory and the express (RG)image of His person, and (RH)upholding all things by the word of His power, (RI)when He had [dl]by Himself [dm]purged [dn]our sins, (RJ)sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become so much better than the angels, as (RK)He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
The Son Exalted Above Angels
5 For to which of the angels did He ever say:
(RL)“You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You”?
And again:
(RM)“I will be to Him a Father,
And He shall be to Me a Son”?
6 But when He again brings (RN)the firstborn into the world, He says:
(RO)“Let all the angels of God worship Him.”
7 And of the angels He says:
(RP)“Who makes His angels spirits
And His ministers a flame of fire.”
8 But to the Son He says:
(RQ)“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A [do]scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;
Therefore God, Your God, (RR)has anointed You
With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”
10 And:
(RS)“You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth,
And the heavens are the work of Your hands.
11 (RT)They will perish, but You remain;
And (RU)they will all grow old like a garment;
12 Like a cloak You will fold them up,
And they will be changed.
But You are the (RV)same,
And Your years will not fail.”
13 But to which of the angels has He ever said:
(RW)“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”?
14 (RX)Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will (RY)inherit salvation?
Do Not Neglect Salvation
2 Therefore we must give [dp]the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2 For if the word (RZ)spoken through angels proved steadfast, and (SA)every transgression and disobedience received a just [dq]reward, 3 (SB)how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, (SC)which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was (SD)confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4 (SE)God also bearing witness (SF)both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and (SG)gifts[dr] of the Holy Spirit, (SH)according to His own will?
The Son Made Lower than Angels(SI)
5 For He has not put (SJ)the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels. 6 But one testified in a certain place, saying:
(SK)“What is man that You are mindful of him,
Or the son of man that You take care of him?
7 You have made him [ds]a little lower than the angels;
You have crowned him with glory and honor,
[dt]And set him over the works of Your hands.
8 (SL)You have put all things in subjection under his feet.”
For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now (SM)we do not yet see all things put under him. 9 But we see Jesus, (SN)who was made [du]a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death (SO)crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death (SP)for everyone.
Bringing Many Sons to Glory
10 For it was fitting for Him, (SQ)for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation (SR)perfect through sufferings. 11 For (SS)both He who [dv]sanctifies and those who are being sanctified (ST)are all of one, for which reason (SU)He is not ashamed to call them brethren, 12 saying:
(SV)“I will declare Your name to My brethren;
In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.”
13 And again:
(SW)“I will put My trust in Him.”
And again:
(SX)“Here am I and the children whom God has given Me.”
14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He (SY)Himself likewise shared in the same, (SZ)that through death He might destroy him who had the power of (TA)death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who (TB)through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. 16 For indeed He does not [dw]give aid to angels, but He does [dx]give aid to the seed of Abraham. 17 Therefore, in all things He had (TC)to be made like His brethren, that He might be (TD)a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 (TE)For in that He Himself has suffered, being [dy]tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.
The Son Was Faithful
3 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, 2 who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as (TF)Moses also was faithful in all His house. 3 For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as (TG)He who built the house has more honor than the house. 4 For every house is built by someone, but (TH)He who built all things is God. 5 (TI)And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as (TJ)a servant, (TK)for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, 6 but Christ as (TL)a Son over His own house, (TM)whose house we are (TN)if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope [dz]firm to the end.
Be Faithful(TO)
7 Therefore, as (TP)the Holy Spirit says:
(TQ)“Today, if you will hear His voice,
8 Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
In the day of trial in the wilderness,
9 Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me,
And saw My works forty years.
10 Therefore I was angry with that generation,
And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,
And they have not known My ways.’
11 So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest.’ ”
12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; 13 but [ea]exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, 15 while it is said:
(TR)“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
Failure of the Wilderness Wanderers
16 (TS)For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? 17 Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, (TT)whose corpses fell in the wilderness? 18 And (TU)to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of (TV)unbelief.
The Promise of Rest
4 Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, (TW)let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. 2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, [eb]not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. 3 For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said:
(TX)“So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest,’ ”
although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4 For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: (TY)“And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; 5 and again in this place: (TZ)“They shall not enter My rest.”
6 Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, 7 again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said:
(UA)“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”
8 For if [ec]Joshua had (UB)given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. 9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.
The Word Discovers Our Condition
11 (UC)Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is (UD)living and powerful, and (UE)sharper than any (UF)two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is (UG)a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 (UH)And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are (UI)naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
Our Compassionate High Priest
14 Seeing then that we have a great (UJ)High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, (UK)let us hold fast our confession. 15 For (UL)we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but (UM)was in all points tempted as we are, (UN)yet without sin. 16 (UO)Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
