⁴ Jonathan spoke^(A) well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king do wrong^(B) to his servant David; he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you greatly.

⁵ He took his life^(A) in his hands when he killed the Philistine. The Lord won a great victory^(B) for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent^(C) man like David by killing him for no reason?”

³² “Why^(A) should he be put to death? What^(B) has he done?” Jonathan asked his father.

¹¹ See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut^(A) off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty^(B) of wrongdoing^(C) or rebellion. I have not wronged^(D) you, but you are hunting^(E) me down to take my life.^(F)
