10 And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.” 11 Then the Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel (A)at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. 12 On that day I will fulfill against Eli (B)all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. 13 (C)And I declare to him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, (D)because his sons were blaspheming God,[a] (E)and he did not restrain them. 14 Therefore I swear to the house of Eli (F)that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever.”

15 Samuel lay until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. And Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. 16 But Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” And he said, “Here I am.” 17 And Eli said, “What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. (G)May God do so to you and more also if you hide anything from me of all that he told you.” 18 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, (H)“It is the Lord. Let him do what seems good to him.”

  1. 1 Samuel 3:13 Or blaspheming for themselves

10 The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!(A)

Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

11 And the Lord said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle.(B) 12 At that time I will carry out against Eli everything(C) I spoke against his family—from beginning to end. 13 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God,[a] and he failed to restrain(D) them. 14 Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned(E) for by sacrifice or offering.’”

15 Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, 16 but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.”

Samuel answered, “Here I am.”

17 “What was it he said to you?” Eli asked. “Do not hide(F) it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely,(G) if you hide from me anything he told you.” 18 So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the Lord; let him do what is good in his eyes.”(H)
