Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; (A)sin is lawlessness. You know that (B)he appeared in order to (C)take away sins, and (D)in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; (E)no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, (F)let no one deceive you. (G)Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. (H)Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was (I)to destroy the works of the devil. (J)No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's[a] seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, (K)nor is the one who (L)does not love his brother.

Love One Another

11 For (M)this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, (N)that we should love one another. 12 We should not be like (O)Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? (P)Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, brothers,[b] (Q)that the world hates you. 14 We know that (R)we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15 (S)Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that (T)no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

16 By this we know love, that (U)he laid down his life for us, and (V)we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But (W)if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet (X)closes his heart against him, (Y)how does God's love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not (Z)love in word or talk but in deed and (AA)in truth.

19 By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; 20 for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. 21 Beloved, (AB)if our heart does not condemn us, (AC)we have confidence before God; 22 and (AD)whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and (AE)do what pleases him.

  2. 1 John 3:13 Or brothers and sisters. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, the plural Greek word adelphoi (translated “brothers”) may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters; also verses 14, 16

Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.(A) But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins.(B) And in him is no sin.(C) No one who lives in him keeps on sinning.(D) No one who continues to sin has either seen him(E) or known him.(F)

Dear children,(G) do not let anyone lead you astray.(H) The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.(I) The one who does what is sinful is of the devil,(J) because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God(K) appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.(L) No one who is born of God(M) will continue to sin,(N) because God’s seed(O) remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God(P) are and who the children of the devil(Q) are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love(R) their brother and sister.(S)

More on Love and Hatred

11 For this is the message you heard(T) from the beginning:(U) We should love one another.(V) 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one(W) and murdered his brother.(X) And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.(Y) 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters,[a] if the world hates you.(Z) 14 We know that we have passed from death to life,(AA) because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.(AB) 15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister(AC) is a murderer,(AD) and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.(AE)

16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.(AF) And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.(AG) 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them,(AH) how can the love of God be in that person?(AI) 18 Dear children,(AJ) let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.(AK)

19 This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends,(AL) if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God(AM) 22 and receive from him anything we ask,(AN) because we keep his commands(AO) and do what pleases him.(AP)
