That You May Know

13 I write (A)these things to you who (B)believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 And this is (C)the confidence that we have toward him, that (D)if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and (E)God[a] will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. (F)There is sin that leads to death; (G)I do not say that one should pray for that. 17 (H)All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.

18 We know that (I)everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but (J)he who was born of God (K)protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.

19 We know that we are from God, and (L)the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

20 And we know that the Son of God has come and (M)has given us understanding, so that we may know (N)him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and (O)eternal life. 21 Little children, (P)keep yourselves from idols.

Greeting

(Q)The elder to the elect lady and her children, (R)whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who (S)know (T)the truth, (U)because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever:

(V)Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father's Son, in truth and love.

Walking in Truth and Love

(W)I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father. And now I ask you, dear lady—(X)not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—(Y)that we love one another. And (Z)this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just (AA)as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it. For (AB)many deceivers (AC)have gone out into the world, (AD)those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. Watch yourselves, (AE)so that you may not lose what we[b] have worked for, but (AF)may win a full reward. Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, (AG)does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching (AH)has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, (AI)do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11 for whoever greets him (AJ)takes part in his wicked works.

Final Greetings

12 (AK)Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink. (AL)Instead I hope to come to you and talk face to face, (AM)so that our joy may be complete.

13 The children of your elect sister greet you.

Concluding Affirmations

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God(A) so that you may know that you have eternal life.(B) 14 This is the confidence(C) we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.(D) 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know(E) that we have what we asked of him.(F)

16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life.(G) I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death.(H) I am not saying that you should pray about that.(I) 17 All wrongdoing is sin,(J) and there is sin that does not lead to death.(K)

18 We know that anyone born of God(L) does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one(M) cannot harm them.(N) 19 We know that we are children of God,(O) and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.(P) 20 We know also that the Son of God has come(Q) and has given us understanding,(R) so that we may know him who is true.(S) And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.(T)

21 Dear children,(U) keep yourselves from idols.(V)

The elder,(W)

To the lady chosen by God(X) and to her children, whom I love in the truth(Y)—and not I only, but also all who know the truth(Z) because of the truth,(AA) which lives in us(AB) and will be with us forever:

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ,(AC) the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love.

It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth,(AD) just as the Father commanded us. And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning.(AE) I ask that we love one another. And this is love:(AF) that we walk in obedience to his commands.(AG) As you have heard from the beginning,(AH) his command is that you walk in love.

I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ(AI) as coming in the flesh,(AJ) have gone out into the world.(AK) Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.(AL) Watch out that you do not lose what we[a] have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.(AM) Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ(AN) does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.(AO) 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them.(AP) 11 Anyone who welcomes them shares(AQ) in their wicked work.

12 I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face,(AR) so that our joy may be complete.(AS)

13 The children of your sister, who is chosen by God,(AT) send their greetings.
