Wisdom from the Spirit

Yet among (A)the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not (B)a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, (C)who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, (D)which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of (E)the rulers of this age understood this, for (F)if they had, they would not have crucified (G)the Lord of glory. But, as it is written,

(H)“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has (I)prepared (J)for those who love him”—

10 these things (K)God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even (L)the depths of God. 11 For who knows a person's thoughts (M)except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now (N)we have received not (O)the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we impart this (P)in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, (Q)interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.[a]

14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are (R)folly to him, and (S)he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 15 The (T)spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. 16 (U)“For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But (V)we have the mind of Christ.

Divisions in the Church

But I, brothers,[b] could not address you as (W)spiritual people, but as (X)people of the flesh, as (Y)infants in Christ. (Z)I fed you with milk, not solid food, for (AA)you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, for you are still of the flesh. For while there is (AB)jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? For (AC)when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” (AD)are you not being merely human?

What then is Apollos? What is Paul? (AE)Servants through whom you believed, (AF)as the Lord assigned to each. (AG)I planted, (AH)Apollos watered, (AI)but God gave the growth. So (AJ)neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each (AK)will receive his wages according to his labor. For we are (AL)God's fellow workers. You are God's field, (AM)God's building.

10 (AN)According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled[c] master builder I laid a (AO)foundation, and (AP)someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. 11 For no one can lay a (AQ)foundation other (AR)than that which is laid, (AS)which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— 13 (AT)each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed (AU)by fire, and (AV)the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14 If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, (AW)he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, (AX)but only as through fire.

16 (AY)Do you not know that you[d] are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For (AZ)God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.

18 (BA)Let no one deceive himself. (BB)If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For (BC)the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, (BD)“He catches the wise in their craftiness,” 20 and again, (BE)“The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” 21 So (BF)let no one boast in men. For (BG)all things are yours, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, 23 and (BH)you are Christ's, and (BI)Christ is God's.

God’s Wisdom Revealed by the Spirit

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature,(A) but not the wisdom of this age(B) or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.(C) No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery(D) that has been hidden(E) and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age(F) understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.(G) However, as it is written:

“What no eye has seen,
    what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”[a]
the things God has prepared for those who love him—(H)

10 these are the things God has revealed(I) to us by his Spirit.(J)

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts(K) except their own spirit(L) within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit(M) of the world,(N) but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom(O) but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.[b] 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God(P) but considers them foolishness,(Q) and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15 The person with the Spirit(R) makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, 16 for,

“Who has known the mind of the Lord
    so as to instruct him?”[c](S)

But we have the mind of Christ.(T)

The Church and Its Leaders

Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit(U) but as people who are still worldly(V)—mere infants(W) in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food,(X) for you were not yet ready for it.(Y) Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling(Z) among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,”(AA) are you not mere human beings?

What, after all, is Apollos?(AB) And what is Paul? Only servants,(AC) through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed,(AD) Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.(AE) For we are co-workers in God’s service;(AF) you are God’s field,(AG) God’s building.(AH)

10 By the grace God has given me,(AI) I laid a foundation(AJ) as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.(AK) 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is,(AL) because the Day(AM) will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.(AN) 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.(AO) 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.(AP)

16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple(AQ) and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?(AR) 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.

18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise(AS) by the standards of this age,(AT) you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness(AU) in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”[d];(AV) 20 and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”[e](AW) 21 So then, no more boasting about human leaders!(AX) All things are yours,(AY) 22 whether Paul or Apollos(AZ) or Cephas[f](BA) or the world or life or death or the present or the future(BB)—all are yours, 23 and you are of Christ,(BC) and Christ is of God.
