A psalm of David.

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. ...

  1. Adam and Eve

This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.
  2. Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground,
  3. Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
  4. Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.
  5. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
  6. The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
  7. And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;
  8. The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
  9. Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
  10. So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh.
  11. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
  12. The Fall

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
  13. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
  14. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”
  15. Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
  16. So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.
  17. The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.
  18. And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”
  19. So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
  20. Cain and Abel

Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.”
  21. In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord.
  22. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
  23. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?
  24. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
  25. The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.
