Psalm 60-74

⁵ Save us and help us with your right hand,^(K)
    that those you love^(L) may be delivered.
⁶ God has spoken from his sanctuary:
    “In triumph I will parcel out Shechem^(M)
    and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth.^(N)
7 Gilead^(O) is mine, and Manasseh is mine;
    Ephraim^(P) is my helmet,
    Judah^(Q) is my scepter.^(R)
8 Moab is my washbasin,
    on Edom I toss my sandal;
    over Philistia I shout in triumph.^(S)”

⁹ Who will bring me to the fortified city?
    Who will lead me to Edom?
¹⁰ Is it not you, God, you who have now rejected us
    and no longer go out with our armies?^(T)
11 Give us aid against the enemy,
    for human help is worthless.^(U)
12 With God we will gain the victory,
    and he will trample down our enemies.^(V)

² From the ends of the earth I call to you,
    I call as my heart grows faint;^(Y)
    lead me to the rock^(Z) that is higher than I.
³ For you have been my refuge,^(AA)
    a strong tower against the foe.^(AB)

⁴ I long to dwell^(AC) in your tent forever
    and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.^[g](AD)
5 For you, God, have heard my vows;^(AE)
    you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.^(AF)

⁶ Increase the days of the king’s life,^(AG)
    his years for many generations.^(AH)
7 May he be enthroned in God’s presence forever;^(AI)
    appoint your love and faithfulness to protect him.^(AJ)

⁸ Then I will ever sing in praise of your name^(AK)
    and fulfill my vows day after day.^(AL)

³ How long will you assault me?
    Would all of you throw me down—
    this leaning wall,^(AS) this tottering fence?
⁴ Surely they intend to topple me
    from my lofty place;
    they take delight in lies.
With their mouths they bless,
    but in their hearts they curse.^[i](AT)

⁵ Yes, my soul, find rest in God;^(AU)
    my hope comes from him.
⁶ Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
    he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
⁷ My salvation and my honor depend on God^[j];
    he is my mighty rock, my refuge.^(AV)
8 Trust in him at all times, you people;^(AW)
    pour out your hearts to him,^(AX)
    for God is our refuge.

⁹ Surely the lowborn^(AY) are but a breath,^(AZ)
    the highborn are but a lie.
If weighed on a balance,^(BA) they are nothing;
    together they are only a breath.
¹⁰ Do not trust in extortion^(BB)
    or put vain hope in stolen goods;^(BC)
though your riches increase,
    do not set your heart on them.^(BD)

¹¹ One thing God has spoken,
    two things I have heard:
“Power belongs to you, God,^(BE)
12     and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”;^(BF)
and, “You reward everyone
    according to what they have done.”^(BG)

² I have seen you in the sanctuary^(BJ)
    and beheld your power and your glory.^(BK)
3 Because your love is better than life,^(BL)
    my lips will glorify you.
⁴ I will praise you as long as I live,^(BM)
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.^(BN)
5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;^(BO)
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

⁶ On my bed I remember you;
    I think of you through the watches of the night.^(BP)
7 Because you are my help,^(BQ)
    I sing in the shadow of your wings.^(BR)
8 I cling to you;^(BS)
    your right hand upholds me.^(BT)

⁹ Those who want to kill me will be destroyed;^(BU)
    they will go down to the depths of the earth.^(BV)
10 They will be given over to the sword^(BW)
    and become food for jackals.^(BX)

¹¹ But the king will rejoice in God;
    all who swear by God will glory in him,^(BY)
    while the mouths of liars will be silenced.^(BZ)

² Hide me from the conspiracy^(CC) of the wicked,^(CD)
    from the plots of evildoers.
³ They sharpen their tongues like swords^(CE)
    and aim cruel words like deadly arrows.^(CF)
4 They shoot from ambush at the innocent;^(CG)
    they shoot suddenly, without fear.^(CH)

⁵ They encourage each other in evil plans,
    they talk about hiding their snares;^(CI)
    they say, “Who will see it^[m]?”^(CJ)
6 They plot injustice and say,
    “We have devised a perfect plan!”
    Surely the human mind and heart are cunning.

⁷ But God will shoot them with his arrows;
    they will suddenly be struck down.
⁸ He will turn their own tongues against them^(CK)
    and bring them to ruin;
    all who see them will shake their heads^(CL) in scorn.^(CM)
9 All people will fear;^(CN)
    they will proclaim the works of God
    and ponder what he has done.^(CO)

¹⁰ The righteous will rejoice in the Lord^(CP)
    and take refuge in him;^(CQ)
    all the upright in heart will glory in him!^(CR)

⁵ You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds,^(DA)
    God our Savior,^(DB)
the hope of all the ends of the earth^(DC)
    and of the farthest seas,^(DD)
6 who formed the mountains^(DE) by your power,
    having armed yourself with strength,^(DF)
7 who stilled the roaring of the seas,^(DG)
    the roaring of their waves,
    and the turmoil of the nations.^(DH)
8 The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders;
    where morning dawns, where evening fades,
    you call forth songs of joy.^(DI)

⁹ You care for the land and water it;^(DJ)
    you enrich it abundantly.^(DK)
The streams of God are filled with water
    to provide the people with grain,^(DL)
    for so you have ordained it.^[q]
10 You drench its furrows and level its ridges;
    you soften it with showers^(DM) and bless its crops.
¹¹ You crown the year with your bounty,^(DN)
    and your carts overflow with abundance.^(DO)
12 The grasslands of the wilderness overflow;^(DP)
    the hills are clothed with gladness.^(DQ)
13 The meadows are covered with flocks^(DR)
    and the valleys are mantled with grain;^(DS)
    they shout for joy and sing.^(DT)

⁵ Come and see what God has done,
    his awesome deeds^(EB) for mankind!
⁶ He turned the sea into dry land,^(EC)
    they passed through^(ED) the waters on foot—
    come, let us rejoice^(EE) in him.
⁷ He rules forever^(EF) by his power,
    his eyes watch^(EG) the nations—
    let not the rebellious^(EH) rise up against him.

⁸ Praise^(EI) our God, all peoples,
    let the sound of his praise be heard;
⁹ he has preserved our lives^(EJ)
    and kept our feet from slipping.^(EK)
10 For you, God, tested^(EL) us;
    you refined us like silver.^(EM)
11 You brought us into prison^(EN)
    and laid burdens^(EO) on our backs.
¹² You let people ride over our heads;^(EP)
    we went through fire and water,
    but you brought us to a place of abundance.^(EQ)

¹³ I will come to your temple with burnt offerings^(ER)
    and fulfill my vows^(ES) to you—
¹⁴ vows my lips promised and my mouth spoke
    when I was in trouble.
¹⁵ I will sacrifice fat animals to you
    and an offering of rams;
    I will offer bulls and goats.^(ET)

¹⁶ Come and hear,^(EU) all you who fear God;
    let me tell^(EV) you what he has done for me.
¹⁷ I cried out to him with my mouth;
    his praise was on my tongue.
¹⁸ If I had cherished sin in my heart,
    the Lord would not have listened;^(EW)
19 but God has surely listened
    and has heard^(EX) my prayer.
²⁰ Praise be to God,
    who has not rejected^(EY) my prayer
    or withheld his love from me!

³ May the peoples praise you, God;
    may all the peoples praise you.^(FC)
4 May the nations be glad and sing for joy,^(FD)
    for you rule the peoples with equity^(FE)
    and guide the nations of the earth.^(FF)
5 May the peoples praise you, God;
    may all the peoples praise you.

⁶ The land yields its harvest;^(FG)
    God, our God, blesses us.^(FH)
7 May God bless us still,
    so that all the ends of the earth^(FI) will fear him.^(FJ)

⁴ Sing to God, sing in praise of his name,^(FR)
    extol him who rides on the clouds^[v](FS);
    rejoice before him—his name is the Lord.^(FT)
5 A father to the fatherless,^(FU) a defender of widows,^(FV)
    is God in his holy dwelling.^(FW)
6 God sets the lonely^(FX) in families,^[w](FY)
    he leads out the prisoners^(FZ) with singing;
    but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.^(GA)

⁷ When you, God, went out^(GB) before your people,
    when you marched through the wilderness,^[x](GC)
8 the earth shook,^(GD) the heavens poured down rain,^(GE)
    before God, the One of Sinai,^(GF)
    before God, the God of Israel.^(GG)
9 You gave abundant showers,^(GH) O God;
    you refreshed your weary inheritance.
¹⁰ Your people settled in it,
    and from your bounty,^(GI) God, you provided^(GJ) for the poor.

¹¹ The Lord announces the word,
    and the women who proclaim it are a mighty throng:^(GK)
12 “Kings and armies flee^(GL) in haste;
    the women at home divide the plunder.^(GM)
13 Even while you sleep among the sheep pens,^[y](GN)
    the wings of my dove are sheathed with silver,
    its feathers with shining gold.”
¹⁴ When the Almighty^[z] scattered^(GO) the kings in the land,
    it was like snow fallen on Mount Zalmon.^(GP)

¹⁵ Mount Bashan,^(GQ) majestic mountain,^(GR)
    Mount Bashan, rugged mountain,
¹⁶ why gaze in envy, you rugged mountain,
    at the mountain where God chooses^(GS) to reign,
    where the Lord himself will dwell forever?^(GT)
17 The chariots^(GU) of God are tens of thousands
    and thousands of thousands;^(GV)
    the Lord has come from Sinai into his sanctuary.^[aa]
18 When you ascended^(GW) on high,^(GX)
    you took many captives;^(GY)
    you received gifts from people,^(GZ)
even from^[ab] the rebellious^(HA)—
    that you,^[ac] Lord God, might dwell there.

¹⁹ Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior,^(HB)
    who daily bears our burdens.^(HC)
20 Our God is a God who saves;^(HD)
    from the Sovereign Lord comes escape from death.^(HE)
21 Surely God will crush the heads^(HF) of his enemies,
    the hairy crowns of those who go on in their sins.
²² The Lord says, “I will bring them from Bashan;
    I will bring them from the depths of the sea,^(HG)
23 that your feet may wade in the blood of your foes,^(HH)
    while the tongues of your dogs^(HI) have their share.”

²⁴ Your procession, God, has come into view,
    the procession of my God and King into the sanctuary.^(HJ)
25 In front are the singers,^(HK) after them the musicians;^(HL)
    with them are the young women playing the timbrels.^(HM)
26 Praise God in the great congregation;^(HN)
    praise the Lord in the assembly of Israel.^(HO)
27 There is the little tribe^(HP) of Benjamin,^(HQ) leading them,
    there the great throng of Judah’s princes,
    and there the princes of Zebulun and of Naphtali.^(HR)

²⁸ Summon your power,^(HS) God^[ad];
    show us your strength,^(HT) our God, as you have done^(HU) before.
²⁹ Because of your temple at Jerusalem
    kings will bring you gifts.^(HV)
30 Rebuke the beast^(HW) among the reeds,^(HX)
    the herd of bulls^(HY) among the calves of the nations.
Humbled, may the beast bring bars of silver.
    Scatter the nations^(HZ) who delight in war.^(IA)
31 Envoys will come from Egypt;^(IB)
    Cush^[ae](IC) will submit herself to God.

³² Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth,^(ID)
    sing praise^(IE) to the Lord,
³³ to him who rides^(IF) across the highest heavens, the ancient heavens,
    who thunders^(IG) with mighty voice.^(IH)
34 Proclaim the power^(II) of God,
    whose majesty^(IJ) is over Israel,
    whose power is in the heavens.
³⁵ You, God, are awesome^(IK) in your sanctuary;^(IL)
    the God of Israel gives power and strength^(IM) to his people.^(IN)

Praise be to God!^(IO)

⁵ You, God, know my folly;^(IY)
    my guilt is not hidden from you.^(IZ)

⁶ Lord, the Lord Almighty,
    may those who hope in you
    not be disgraced because of me;
God of Israel,
    may those who seek you
    not be put to shame because of me.
⁷ For I endure scorn^(JA) for your sake,^(JB)
    and shame covers my face.^(JC)
8 I am a foreigner to my own family,
    a stranger to my own mother’s children;^(JD)
9 for zeal for your house consumes me,^(JE)
    and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.^(JF)
10 When I weep and fast,^(JG)
    I must endure scorn;
¹¹ when I put on sackcloth,^(JH)
    people make sport of me.
¹² Those who sit at the gate^(JI) mock me,
    and I am the song of the drunkards.^(JJ)

¹³ But I pray to you, Lord,
    in the time of your favor;^(JK)
in your great love,^(JL) O God,
    answer me with your sure salvation.
¹⁴ Rescue me from the mire,
    do not let me sink;
deliver me from those who hate me,
    from the deep waters.^(JM)
15 Do not let the floodwaters^(JN) engulf me
    or the depths swallow me up^(JO)
    or the pit close its mouth over me.^(JP)

¹⁶ Answer me, Lord, out of the goodness of your love;^(JQ)
    in your great mercy turn to me.
¹⁷ Do not hide your face^(JR) from your servant;
    answer me quickly,^(JS) for I am in trouble.^(JT)
18 Come near and rescue me;
    deliver^(JU) me because of my foes.

¹⁹ You know how I am scorned,^(JV) disgraced and shamed;
    all my enemies are before you.
²⁰ Scorn has broken my heart
    and has left me helpless;
I looked for sympathy, but there was none,
    for comforters,^(JW) but I found none.^(JX)
21 They put gall in my food
    and gave me vinegar^(JY) for my thirst.^(JZ)

²² May the table set before them become a snare;
    may it become retribution and^[ag] a trap.^(KA)
23 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,
    and their backs be bent forever.^(KB)
24 Pour out your wrath^(KC) on them;
    let your fierce anger overtake them.
²⁵ May their place be deserted;^(KD)
    let there be no one to dwell in their tents.^(KE)
26 For they persecute those you wound
    and talk about the pain of those you hurt.^(KF)
27 Charge them with crime upon crime;^(KG)
    do not let them share in your salvation.^(KH)
28 May they be blotted out of the book of life^(KI)
    and not be listed with the righteous.^(KJ)

²⁹ But as for me, afflicted and in pain—
    may your salvation, God, protect me.^(KK)

³⁰ I will praise God’s name in song^(KL)
    and glorify him^(KM) with thanksgiving.
³¹ This will please the Lord more than an ox,
    more than a bull with its horns and hooves.^(KN)
32 The poor will see and be glad^(KO)—
    you who seek God, may your hearts live!^(KP)
33 The Lord hears the needy^(KQ)
    and does not despise his captive people.

³⁴ Let heaven and earth praise him,
    the seas and all that move in them,^(KR)
35 for God will save Zion^(KS)
    and rebuild the cities of Judah.^(KT)
Then people will settle there and possess it;
³⁶     the children of his servants will inherit it,^(KU)
    and those who love his name will dwell there.^(KV)

² May those who want to take my life^(KY)
    be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
    be turned back in disgrace.^(KZ)
3 May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”^(LA)
    turn back because of their shame.
⁴ But may all who seek you^(LB)
    rejoice and be glad^(LC) in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
    “The Lord is great!”^(LD)

⁵ But as for me, I am poor and needy;^(LE)
    come quickly to me,^(LF) O God.
You are my help^(LG) and my deliverer;^(LH)
    Lord, do not delay.^(LI)

⁵ For you have been my hope,^(LR) Sovereign Lord,
    my confidence^(LS) since my youth.
⁶ From birth^(LT) I have relied on you;
    you brought me forth from my mother’s womb.^(LU)
    I will ever praise^(LV) you.
⁷ I have become a sign^(LW) to many;
    you are my strong refuge.^(LX)
8 My mouth^(LY) is filled with your praise,
    declaring your splendor^(LZ) all day long.

⁹ Do not cast^(MA) me away when I am old;^(MB)
    do not forsake^(MC) me when my strength is gone.
¹⁰ For my enemies^(MD) speak against me;
    those who wait to kill^(ME) me conspire^(MF) together.
¹¹ They say, “God has forsaken^(MG) him;
    pursue him and seize him,
    for no one will rescue^(MH) him.”
¹² Do not be far^(MI) from me, my God;
    come quickly, God, to help^(MJ) me.
¹³ May my accusers^(MK) perish in shame;^(ML)
    may those who want to harm me
    be covered with scorn and disgrace.^(MM)

¹⁴ As for me, I will always have hope;^(MN)
    I will praise you more and more.

¹⁵ My mouth will tell^(MO) of your righteous deeds,^(MP)
    of your saving acts all day long—
    though I know not how to relate them all.
¹⁶ I will come and proclaim your mighty acts,^(MQ) Sovereign Lord;
    I will proclaim your righteous deeds, yours alone.
¹⁷ Since my youth, God, you have taught^(MR) me,
    and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.^(MS)
18 Even when I am old and gray,^(MT)
    do not forsake me, my God,
till I declare your power^(MU) to the next generation,
    your mighty acts to all who are to come.^(MV)

¹⁹ Your righteousness, God, reaches to the heavens,^(MW)
    you who have done great things.^(MX)
    Who is like you, God?^(MY)
20 Though you have made me see troubles,^(MZ)
    many and bitter,
    you will restore^(NA) my life again;
from the depths of the earth^(NB)
    you will again bring me up.
²¹ You will increase my honor^(NC)
    and comfort^(ND) me once more.

²² I will praise you with the harp^(NE)
    for your faithfulness, my God;
I will sing praise to you with the lyre,^(NF)
    Holy One of Israel.^(NG)
23 My lips will shout for joy^(NH)
    when I sing praise to you—
    I whom you have delivered.^(NI)
24 My tongue will tell of your righteous acts
    all day long,^(NJ)
for those who wanted to harm me^(NK)
    have been put to shame and confusion.^(NL)

³ May the mountains bring prosperity to the people,
    the hills the fruit of righteousness.
⁴ May he defend the afflicted^(NO) among the people
    and save the children of the needy;^(NP)
    may he crush the oppressor.^(NQ)
5 May he endure^[ai](NR) as long as the sun,
    as long as the moon, through all generations.^(NS)
6 May he be like rain^(NT) falling on a mown field,
    like showers watering the earth.
⁷ In his days may the righteous flourish^(NU)
    and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.

⁸ May he rule from sea to sea
    and from the River^[aj](NV) to the ends of the earth.^(NW)
9 May the desert tribes bow before him
    and his enemies lick the dust.
¹⁰ May the kings of Tarshish^(NX) and of distant shores^(NY)
    bring tribute to him.
May the kings of Sheba^(NZ) and Seba
    present him gifts.^(OA)
11 May all kings bow down^(OB) to him
    and all nations serve^(OC) him.

¹² For he will deliver the needy who cry out,
    the afflicted who have no one to help.
¹³ He will take pity^(OD) on the weak and the needy
    and save the needy from death.
¹⁴ He will rescue^(OE) them from oppression and violence,
    for precious^(OF) is their blood in his sight.

¹⁵ Long may he live!
    May gold from Sheba^(OG) be given him.
May people ever pray for him
    and bless him all day long.^(OH)
16 May grain^(OI) abound throughout the land;
    on the tops of the hills may it sway.
May the crops^(OJ) flourish like Lebanon^(OK)
    and thrive^[ak] like the grass of the field.^(OL)
17 May his name endure forever;^(OM)
    may it continue as long as the sun.^(ON)

Then all nations will be blessed through him,^[al]
    and they will call him blessed.^(OO)

¹⁸ Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel,^(OP)
    who alone does marvelous deeds.^(OQ)
19 Praise be to his glorious name^(OR) forever;
    may the whole earth be filled with his glory.^(OS)

² But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;^(OW)
    I had nearly lost my foothold.^(OX)
3 For I envied^(OY) the arrogant
    when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.^(OZ)

⁴ They have no struggles;
    their bodies are healthy and strong.^[am]
5 They are free^(PA) from common human burdens;
    they are not plagued by human ills.
⁶ Therefore pride^(PB) is their necklace;^(PC)
    they clothe themselves with violence.^(PD)
7 From their callous hearts^(PE) comes iniquity^[an];
    their evil imaginations have no limits.
⁸ They scoff, and speak with malice;^(PF)
    with arrogance^(PG) they threaten oppression.^(PH)
9 Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
    and their tongues take possession of the earth.
¹⁰ Therefore their people turn to them
    and drink up waters in abundance.^[ao]
11 They say, “How would God know?
    Does the Most High know anything?”

¹² This is what the wicked are like—
    always free of care,^(PI) they go on amassing wealth.^(PJ)

¹³ Surely in vain^(PK) I have kept my heart pure
    and have washed my hands in innocence.^(PL)
14 All day long I have been afflicted,^(PM)
    and every morning brings new punishments.

¹⁵ If I had spoken out like that,
    I would have betrayed your children.
¹⁶ When I tried to understand^(PN) all this,
    it troubled me deeply
¹⁷ till I entered the sanctuary^(PO) of God;
    then I understood their final destiny.^(PP)

¹⁸ Surely you place them on slippery ground;^(PQ)
    you cast them down to ruin.^(PR)
19 How suddenly^(PS) are they destroyed,
    completely swept away^(PT) by terrors!
²⁰ They are like a dream^(PU) when one awakes;^(PV)
    when you arise, Lord,
    you will despise them as fantasies.^(PW)

²¹ When my heart was grieved
    and my spirit embittered,
²² I was senseless^(PX) and ignorant;
    I was a brute beast^(PY) before you.

²³ Yet I am always with you;
    you hold me by my right hand.^(PZ)
24 You guide^(QA) me with your counsel,^(QB)
    and afterward you will take me into glory.
²⁵ Whom have I in heaven but you?^(QC)
    And earth has nothing I desire besides you.^(QD)
26 My flesh and my heart^(QE) may fail,^(QF)
    but God is the strength^(QG) of my heart
    and my portion^(QH) forever.

²⁷ Those who are far from you will perish;^(QI)
    you destroy all who are unfaithful^(QJ) to you.
²⁸ But as for me, it is good to be near God.^(QK)
    I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;^(QL)
    I will tell of all your deeds.^(QM)

⁴ Your foes roared^(QX) in the place where you met with us;
    they set up their standards^(QY) as signs.
⁵ They behaved like men wielding axes
    to cut through a thicket of trees.^(QZ)
6 They smashed all the carved^(RA) paneling
    with their axes and hatchets.
⁷ They burned your sanctuary to the ground;
    they defiled^(RB) the dwelling place^(RC) of your Name.^(RD)
8 They said in their hearts, “We will crush^(RE) them completely!”
    They burned^(RF) every place where God was worshiped in the land.

⁹ We are given no signs from God;^(RG)
    no prophets^(RH) are left,
    and none of us knows how long this will be.
