Psalm 66
For the director of music. A song. A psalm.
1 Shout for joy to God, all the earth!(A)
2 Sing the glory of his name;(B)
make his praise glorious.(C)
3 Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!(D)
So great is your power
that your enemies cringe(E) before you.
4 All the earth bows down(F) to you;
they sing praise(G) to you,
they sing the praises of your name.”[a]

2 Chantez la gloire de son nom, Célébrez sa gloire par vos louanges!
3 Dites à Dieu: Que tes oeuvres sont redoutables! A cause de la grandeur de ta force, tes ennemis te flattent.
4 Toute la terre se prosterne devant toi et chante en ton honneur; Elle chante ton nom. -Pause.
5 Venez et contemplez les oeuvres de Dieu! Il est redoutable quand il agit sur les fils de l'homme.
6 Il changea la mer en une terre sèche, On traversa le fleuve à pied: Alors nous nous réjouîmes en lui.

Psalm 78
A maskil[a] of Asaph.
1 My people, hear my teaching;(A)
listen to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth with a parable;(B)
I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
3 things we have heard and known,
things our ancestors have told us.(C)
4 We will not hide them from their descendants;(D)
we will tell the next generation(E)
the praiseworthy deeds(F) of the Lord,
his power, and the wonders(G) he has done.
5 He decreed statutes(H) for Jacob(I)
and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach their children,
6 so the next generation would know them,
even the children yet to be born,(J)
and they in turn would tell their children.
7 Then they would put their trust in God
and would not forget(K) his deeds
but would keep his commands.(L)
8 They would not be like their ancestors(M)—
a stubborn(N) and rebellious(O) generation,
whose hearts were not loyal to God,
whose spirits were not faithful to him.
9 The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows,(P)
turned back on the day of battle;(Q)
10 they did not keep God’s covenant(R)
and refused to live by his law.(S)
11 They forgot what he had done,(T)
the wonders he had shown them.
12 He did miracles(U) in the sight of their ancestors
in the land of Egypt,(V) in the region of Zoan.(W)
13 He divided the sea(X) and led them through;
he made the water stand up like a wall.(Y)
14 He guided them with the cloud by day
and with light from the fire all night.(Z)
15 He split the rocks(AA) in the wilderness
and gave them water as abundant as the seas;
16 he brought streams out of a rocky crag
and made water flow down like rivers.
17 But they continued to sin(AB) against him,
rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.
18 They willfully put God to the test(AC)
by demanding the food they craved.(AD)
19 They spoke against God;(AE)
they said, “Can God really
spread a table in the wilderness?
20 True, he struck the rock,
and water gushed out,(AF)
streams flowed abundantly,
but can he also give us bread?
Can he supply meat(AG) for his people?”
21 When the Lord heard them, he was furious;
his fire broke out(AH) against Jacob,
and his wrath rose against Israel,
22 for they did not believe in God
or trust(AI) in his deliverance.
23 Yet he gave a command to the skies above
and opened the doors of the heavens;(AJ)
24 he rained down manna(AK) for the people to eat,
he gave them the grain of heaven.
25 Human beings ate the bread of angels;
he sent them all the food they could eat.
26 He let loose the east wind(AL) from the heavens
and by his power made the south wind blow.
27 He rained meat down on them like dust,
birds(AM) like sand on the seashore.
28 He made them come down inside their camp,
all around their tents.
29 They ate till they were gorged—(AN)
he had given them what they craved.
30 But before they turned from what they craved,
even while the food was still in their mouths,(AO)
31 God’s anger rose against them;
he put to death the sturdiest(AP) among them,
cutting down the young men of Israel.
32 In spite of all this, they kept on sinning;(AQ)
in spite of his wonders,(AR) they did not believe.(AS)
33 So he ended their days in futility(AT)
and their years in terror.
34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek(AU) him;
they eagerly turned to him again.
35 They remembered that God was their Rock,(AV)
that God Most High was their Redeemer.(AW)
36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths,(AX)
lying to him with their tongues;
37 their hearts were not loyal(AY) to him,
they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he was merciful;(AZ)
he forgave(BA) their iniquities(BB)
and did not destroy them.
Time after time he restrained his anger(BC)
and did not stir up his full wrath.
39 He remembered that they were but flesh,(BD)
a passing breeze(BE) that does not return.
40 How often they rebelled(BF) against him in the wilderness(BG)
and grieved him(BH) in the wasteland!
41 Again and again they put God to the test;(BI)
they vexed the Holy One of Israel.(BJ)
42 They did not remember(BK) his power—
the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,(BL)
43 the day he displayed his signs(BM) in Egypt,
his wonders(BN) in the region of Zoan.
44 He turned their river into blood;(BO)
they could not drink from their streams.
45 He sent swarms of flies(BP) that devoured them,
and frogs(BQ) that devastated them.
46 He gave their crops to the grasshopper,(BR)
their produce to the locust.(BS)
47 He destroyed their vines with hail(BT)
and their sycamore-figs with sleet.
48 He gave over their cattle to the hail,
their livestock(BU) to bolts of lightning.
49 He unleashed against them his hot anger,(BV)
his wrath, indignation and hostility—
a band of destroying angels.(BW)
50 He prepared a path for his anger;
he did not spare them from death
but gave them over to the plague.
51 He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt,(BX)
the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.(BY)
52 But he brought his people out like a flock;(BZ)
he led them like sheep through the wilderness.
53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid;
but the sea engulfed(CA) their enemies.(CB)
54 And so he brought them to the border of his holy land,
to the hill country his right hand(CC) had taken.
55 He drove out nations(CD) before them
and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance;(CE)
he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.

78 Cantique d'Asaph. Mon peuple, écoute mes instructions! Prêtez l'oreille aux paroles de ma bouche!
2 J'ouvre la bouche par des sentences, Je publie la sagesse des temps anciens.
3 Ce que nous avons entendu, ce que nous savons, Ce que nos pères nous ont raconté,
4 Nous ne le cacherons point à leurs enfants; Nous dirons à la génération future les louanges de l'Éternel, Et sa puissance, et les prodiges qu'il a opérés.
5 Il a établi un témoignage en Jacob, Il a mis une loi en Israël, Et il a ordonné à nos pères de l'enseigner à leurs enfants,
6 Pour qu'elle fût connue de la génération future, Des enfants qui naîtraient, Et que, devenus grands, ils en parlassent à leurs enfants,
7 Afin qu'ils missent en Dieu leur confiance, Qu'ils n'oubliassent pas les oeuvres de Dieu, Et qu'ils observassent ses commandements,
8 Afin qu'ils ne fussent pas, comme leurs pères, Une race indocile et rebelle, Une race dont le coeur n'était pas ferme, Et dont l'esprit n'était pas fidèle à Dieu.
9 Les fils d'Éphraïm, armés et tirant de l'arc, Tournèrent le dos le jour du combat.
10 Ils ne gardèrent point l'alliance de Dieu, Et ils refusèrent de marcher selon sa loi.
11 Ils mirent en oubli ses oeuvres, Ses merveilles qu'il leur avait fait voir.
12 Devant leurs pères il avait fait des prodiges, Au pays d'Égypte, dans les campagnes de Tsoan.
13 Il fendit la mer et leur ouvrit un passage, Il fit dresser les eaux comme une muraille.
14 Il les conduisit le jour par la nuée, Et toute la nuit par un feu éclatant.
15 Il fendit des rochers dans le désert, Et il donna à boire comme des flots abondants;
16 Du rocher il fit jaillir des sources, Et couler des eaux comme des fleuves.
17 Mais ils continuèrent à pécher contre lui, A se révolter contre le Très Haut dans le désert.
18 Ils tentèrent Dieu dans leur coeur, En demandant de la nourriture selon leur désir.
19 Ils parlèrent contre Dieu, Ils dirent: Dieu pourrait-il Dresser une table dans le désert?
20 Voici, il a frappé le rocher, et des eaux ont coulé, Et des torrents se sont répandus; Pourra-t-il aussi donner du pain, Ou fournir de la viande à son peuple?
21 L'Éternel entendit, et il fut irrité; Un feu s'alluma contre Jacob, Et la colère s'éleva contre Israël,
22 Parce qu'ils ne crurent pas en Dieu, Parce qu'ils n'eurent pas confiance dans son secours.
23 Il commanda aux nuages d'en haut, Et il ouvrit les portes des cieux;
24 Il fit pleuvoir sur eux la manne pour nourriture, Il leur donna le blé du ciel.
25 Ils mangèrent tous le pain des grands, Il leur envoya de la nourriture à satiété.
26 Il fit souffler dans les cieux le vent d'orient, Et il amena par sa puissance le vent du midi;
27 Il fit pleuvoir sur eux la viande comme de la poussière, Et comme le sable des mers les oiseaux ailés;
28 Il les fit tomber au milieu de leur camp, Tout autour de leurs demeures.
29 Ils mangèrent et se rassasièrent abondamment: Dieu leur donna ce qu'ils avaient désiré.
30 Ils n'avaient pas satisfait leur désir, Ils avaient encore leur nourriture dans la bouche,
31 Lorsque la colère de Dieu s'éleva contre eux; Il frappa de mort les plus vigoureux, Il abattit les jeunes hommes d'Israël.
32 Malgré tout cela, ils continuèrent à pécher, Et ne crurent point à ses prodiges.
33 Il consuma leurs jours par la vanité, Et leurs années par une fin soudaine.
34 Quand il les frappait de mort, ils le cherchaient, Ils revenaient et se tournaient vers Dieu;
35 Ils se souvenaient que Dieu était leur rocher, Que le Dieu Très Haut était leur libérateur.
36 Mais ils le trompaient de la bouche, Et ils lui mentaient de la langue;
37 Leur coeur n'était pas ferme envers lui, Et ils n'étaient pas fidèles à son alliance.
38 Toutefois, dans sa miséricorde, il pardonne l'iniquité et ne détruit pas; Il retient souvent sa colère et ne se livre pas à toute sa fureur.
39 Il se souvint qu'ils n'étaient que chair, Un souffle qui s'en va et ne revient pas.
40 Que de fois ils se révoltèrent contre lui dans le désert! Que de fois ils l'irritèrent dans la solitude!
41 Ils ne cessèrent de tenter Dieu, Et de provoquer le Saint d'Israël.
42 Ils ne se souvinrent pas de sa puissance, Du jour où il les délivra de l'ennemi,
43 Des miracles qu'il accomplit en Égypte, Et de ses prodiges dans les campagnes de Tsoan.
44 Il changea leurs fleuves en sang, Et ils ne purent en boire les eaux.
45 Il envoya contre eux des mouches venimeuses qui les dévorèrent, Et des grenouilles qui les détruisirent.
46 Il livra leurs récoltes aux sauterelles, Le produit de leur travail aux sauterelles.
47 Il fit périr leurs vignes par la grêle, Et leurs sycomores par la gelée.
48 Il abandonna leur bétail à la grêle, Et leurs troupeaux au feu du ciel.
49 Il lança contre eux son ardente colère, La fureur, la rage et la détresse, Une troupe de messagers de malheur.
50 Il donna libre cours à sa colère, Il ne sauva pas leur âme de la mort, Il livra leur vie à la mortalité;
51 Il frappa tous les premiers-nés en Égypte, Les prémices de la force sous les tentes de Cham.
52 Il fit partir son peuple comme des brebis, Il les conduisit comme un troupeau dans le désert.
53 Il les dirigea sûrement, pour qu'ils fussent sans crainte, Et la mer couvrit leurs ennemis.
54 Il les amena vers sa frontière sainte, Vers cette montagne que sa droite a acquise.
55 Il chassa devant eux les nations, Leur distribua le pays en héritage, Et fit habiter dans leurs tentes les tribus d'Israël.
