Praise to the Creator and Protector.

33 ^(A)Sing for joy in the Lord, you righteous ones;
Praise is ^(B)becoming to the upright.
²Give thanks to the Lord with the ^(C)lyre;
Sing praises to Him with a ^(D)harp of ten strings.
³Sing to Him a ^(E)new song;
Play skillfully with ^(F)a shout of joy.
⁴For the word of the Lord ^(G)is right,
And all His work is done ^(H)in faithfulness.
⁵He ^(I)loves righteousness and justice;
The ^(J)earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

⁶By the ^(K)word of the Lord the heavens were made,
And ^(L)by the breath of His mouth ^(M)all their ^[a]lights.
⁷He gathers the ^(N)waters of the sea together ^[b]as a heap;
He puts the depths in storehouses.
⁸Let ^(O)all the earth fear the Lord;
Let all the inhabitants of the world ^(P)stand in awe of Him.
⁹For ^(Q)He spoke, and it was done;
He commanded, and it ^[c]stood firm.
¹⁰The Lord ^(R)nullifies the plan of nations;
He frustrates the plans of peoples.
¹¹The ^(S)plan of the Lord stands forever,
The ^(T)plans of His heart from generation to generation.
¹²Blessed is the ^(U)nation whose God is the Lord,
The people He has ^(V)chosen for His own inheritance.

¹³The Lord ^(W)looks from heaven;
He ^(X)sees all the sons of mankind;
¹⁴From ^(Y)His dwelling place He looks out
On all the inhabitants of the earth,
¹⁵He who ^(Z)fashions ^[d]the hearts of them all,
He who ^(AA)understands all their works.
¹⁶^(AB)The king is not saved by a mighty army;
A warrior is not rescued by great strength.
¹⁷A ^(AC)horse is a false hope for victory;
Nor does it rescue anyone by its great strength.

¹⁸Behold, ^(AD)the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
On those who ^(AE)wait for His faithfulness,
¹⁹To ^(AF)rescue their soul from death
And to keep them alive ^(AG)in famine.
²⁰Our soul ^(AH)waits for the Lord;
He is our ^(AI)help and our shield.
²¹For our ^(AJ)heart rejoices in Him,
Because we trust in His holy name.
²²Let Your favor, Lord, be upon us,
Just as we have waited for You.

The Lord, a Provider and the One Who Rescues Me.

A Psalm of David, when he pretended to be insane before ^[e]Abimelech, who drove him away, and he departed.

34 I will ^(AK)bless the Lord at all times;
His ^(AL)praise shall continually be in my mouth.
²My soul will ^(AM)make its boast in the Lord;
The ^(AN)humble will hear it and rejoice.
³^(AO)Exalt the Lord with me,
And let’s ^(AP)exalt His name together.

⁴I ^(AQ)sought the Lord and He answered me,
And ^(AR)rescued me from all my fears.
⁵They ^(AS)looked to Him and were radiant,
And their faces will ^(AT)never be ashamed.
⁶This wretched man cried out, and ^(AU)the Lord heard him,
And saved him out of all his troubles.
⁷The ^(AV)angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him,
And rescues them.

⁸^(AW)Taste and see that the Lord is good;
How ^(AX)blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
⁹Fear the Lord, you ^(AY)His saints;
For to those who fear Him there is ^(AZ)no lack of anything.
¹⁰The young lions do without and suffer hunger;
But they who seek the Lord will ^(BA)not lack any good thing.
¹¹^(BB)Come, you children, listen to me;
^(BC)I will teach you ^(BD)the fear of the Lord.
¹²^(BE)Who is the person who desires life
And loves length of days, that he may ^(BF)see good?
¹³Keep ^(BG)your tongue from evil
And your lips from speaking ^(BH)deceit.
¹⁴^(BI)Turn from evil and do good;
Seek peace and ^(BJ)pursue it.

¹⁵The ^(BK)eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous,
And His ears are toward their cry for help.
¹⁶The ^(BL)face of the Lord is against evildoers,
To ^(BM)eliminate the memory of them from the earth.
¹⁷The righteous ^(BN)cry out, and the Lord hears
And rescues them from all their troubles.
¹⁸The Lord ^(BO)is near to the ^(BP)brokenhearted
And saves those who are ^[f]^(BQ)crushed in spirit.

¹⁹^(BR)The ^(BS)afflictions of the righteous are many,
But the Lord ^(BT)rescues him from them all.
²⁰He protects all his bones,
^(BU)Not one of them is broken.
²¹^(BV)Evil will bring death to the wicked,
And those who hate the righteous will suffer for their guilt.
²²The Lord ^(BW)redeems the souls of His servants,
And none of those who ^(BX)take refuge in Him will suffer for their guilt.

Prayer for Rescue from Enemies.

35 Contend, Lord, with those who ^(BY)contend with me;
Fight against those who ^(BZ)fight against me.
²Take hold of ^[g]^(CA)buckler and shield
And rise up as ^(CB)my help.
³Draw also the spear and ^[h]the battle-axe to meet those who pursue me;
Say to my soul, “I am ^(CC)your salvation.”
⁴Let those be ^(CD)ashamed and dishonored who seek my ^[i]life;
Let those be ^(CE)turned back and humiliated who devise evil against me.
⁵Let them be ^(CF)like chaff before the wind,
With the angel of the Lord driving them on.
⁶Let their way be dark and ^(CG)slippery,
With the angel of the Lord pursuing them.
⁷For ^(CH)they ^(CI)hid their net for me without cause;
Without cause they dug a pit for my soul.
⁸Let ^(CJ)destruction come upon him when he is unaware,
And ^(CK)let the net which he hid catch him;
Let him fall into that very ^(CL)destruction.

⁹So my soul shall ^(CM)rejoice in the Lord;
It shall ^(CN)rejoice in His salvation.
¹⁰All my ^(CO)bones will say, “Lord, ^(CP)who is like You,
Who rescues the afflicted from one ^(CQ)who is too strong for him,
And ^(CR)the afflicted and the poor from one who robs him?”
¹¹^(CS)Malicious witnesses rise up;
They ask me things that I do not know.
¹²They ^(CT)repay me evil for good,
To the bereavement of my soul.
¹³But as for me, ^(CU)when they were sick, my ^(CV)clothing was sackcloth;
I ^(CW)humbled my soul with fasting,
But my ^(CX)prayer kept returning to ^[j]me.
¹⁴I went about as though it were my friend or brother;
I ^(CY)bowed down ^[k]in mourning, like one who mourns for a mother.
¹⁵But ^(CZ)at my ^[l]stumbling they rejoiced and gathered themselves together;
The ^[m]^(DA)afflicted people whom I did not know gathered together against me,
They ^[n]^(DB)slandered me without ceasing.
¹⁶Like godless jesters at a feast,
They ^(DC)gnashed at me with their teeth.

¹⁷Lord, ^(DD)how long will You look on?
Rescue my soul ^(DE)from their ravages,
My ^(DF)only life from the lions.
¹⁸I will ^(DG)give You thanks in the great congregation;
I will ^(DH)praise You among a mighty people.
¹⁹^(DI)Do not let those who are wrongfully ^(DJ)my enemies rejoice over me;
Nor let those ^(DK)who hate me for no reason ^[o]^(DL)wink maliciously.
²⁰For they do not speak peace,
But they devise ^(DM)deceitful words against those who are quiet in the land.
²¹They ^(DN)opened their mouth wide against me;
They said, “^(DO)Aha, aha! Our eyes have seen it!”

²²^(DP)You have seen it, Lord, ^(DQ)do not keep silent;
Lord, ^(DR)do not be far from me.
²³^(DS)Stir Yourself, and awake to my right
And to my cause, my God and my Lord.
²⁴^(DT)Judge me, Lord my God, according to Your righteousness,
And ^(DU)do not let them rejoice over me.
²⁵Do not let them say in their heart, “^(DV)Aha, our desire!”
Do not let them say, “We have ^(DW)swallowed him up!”
²⁶May ^(DX)those be ashamed and altogether humiliated who rejoice at my distress;
May those who ^(DY)exalt themselves over me be ^(DZ)clothed with shame and dishonor.

²⁷May those ^(EA)shout for joy and rejoice, who take delight in ^(EB)my vindication;
And ^(EC)may they say continually, “The Lord be exalted,
Who ^(ED)delights in the prosperity of His servant.”
²⁸And ^(EE)my tongue shall proclaim Your righteousness
And Your praise all day long.

Wickedness of Humanity and Goodness of God.

36 ^[p]Wrongdoing speaks to the ungodly within ^[q]his heart;
There is ^(EF)no fear of God before his eyes.
²For it ^(EG)flatters him in his own eyes
Concerning the discovery of his wrongful deed and the hatred of it.
³The ^(EH)words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit;
He has ^(EI)ceased to ^[r]be wise and to do good.
⁴He ^(EJ)plans wickedness on his bed;
He sets himself on a ^(EK)path that is not good;
He ^(EL)does not reject evil.

⁵Your ^(EM)mercy, Lord, ^[s]extends to the heavens,
Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
⁶Your ^(EN)righteousness is like the ^[t]mountains of God;
Your ^(EO)judgments are like the great deep.
Lord, You ^[u]^(EP)protect mankind and animals.
⁷How ^(EQ)precious is Your mercy, God!
And the sons of mankind ^(ER)take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.
⁸They ^(ES)drink their fill of the ^[v]abundance of Your house;
And You allow them to drink from the ^(ET)river of Your delights.
⁹For the ^(EU)fountain of life is with You;
In Your light we see light.

¹⁰Prolong Your mercy to ^(EV)those who know You,
And Your ^(EW)righteousness to the upright of heart.
¹¹May the foot of pride not come upon me,
And may the hand of the wicked not drive me away.
¹²Those who do injustice have fallen there;
They have been thrust down and ^(EX)cannot rise.

Security of Those Who Trust in the Lord, and Insecurity of the Wicked.

A Psalm of David.

37 ^(EY)Do not get upset because of evildoers,
Do not be ^(EZ)envious of wrongdoers.
²For they will ^(FA)wither quickly like the grass,
And ^(FB)decay like the green plants.
³^(FC)Trust in the Lord and do good;
^(FD)Live in the land and ^[w]^(FE)cultivate faithfulness.
⁴^(FF)Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will ^(FG)give you the desires of your heart.
⁵^(FH)Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
⁶He will bring out ^(FI)your righteousness as the light,
And your judgment ^(FJ)as the noonday.

⁷^[x]Rest in the Lord and ^(FK)wait ^[y]patiently for Him;
^(FL)Do not get upset because of one who is ^(FM)successful in his way,
Because of the person who carries out wicked schemes.
⁸Cease from anger and ^(FN)abandon wrath;
Do not get upset; it leads only to evildoing.
⁹For ^(FO)evildoers will be eliminated,
But those who wait for the Lord, they will ^(FP)inherit the land.
¹⁰Yet ^(FQ)a little while and the wicked person will be no more;
And you will look carefully for ^(FR)his place and he will not be there.
¹¹But ^(FS)the humble will inherit the land
And will delight themselves in ^(FT)abundant prosperity.

¹²The wicked ^(FU)plots against the righteous,
And ^(FV)gnashes at him with his teeth.
¹³The Lord ^(FW)laughs at him,
For He sees that ^(FX)his day is coming.
¹⁴The wicked have drawn the sword and ^(FY)bent their bow
To take down the ^(FZ)afflicted and the needy,
To ^(GA)kill off those who are upright in conduct.
¹⁵Their sword will enter their own heart,
And their ^(GB)bows will be broken.

¹⁶^(GC)Better is the little of the righteous
Than the abundance of many wicked.
¹⁷For the ^(GD)arms of the wicked will be broken,
But the Lord ^(GE)sustains the righteous.
¹⁸The Lord ^(GF)knows the days of the ^[z]blameless,
And their ^(GG)inheritance will be forever.
¹⁹They will not be ashamed in the time of evil,
And ^(GH)in the days of famine they will have plenty.
²⁰But the ^(GI)wicked will perish;
And the enemies of the Lord will be like the ^[aa]glory of the pastures,
They vanish—^(GJ)like smoke they vanish away.
²¹The wicked borrows and does not pay back,
But the righteous ^(GK)is gracious and gives.
²²For ^(GL)those blessed by Him will ^(GM)inherit the land,
But those ^(GN)cursed by Him will be eliminated.

²³^(GO)The steps of a man are established by the Lord,
And He ^(GP)delights in his way.
²⁴When ^(GQ)he falls, he will not be hurled down,
Because ^(GR)the Lord is the One ^[ab]who holds his hand.
²⁵I have been young and now I am old,
Yet ^(GS)I have not seen the righteous forsaken
Or ^(GT)his ^[ac]descendants begging for bread.
²⁶All day long ^(GU)he is gracious and lends,
And ^(GV)his ^[ad]descendants are a blessing.

²⁷^(GW)Turn from evil and do good,
So that you will dwell ^(GX)forever.
²⁸For the Lord ^(GY)loves ^[ae]justice
And ^(GZ)does not abandon His godly ones;
They are ^(HA)protected forever,
But the ^[af]^(HB)descendants of the wicked will be eliminated.
²⁹The righteous will ^(HC)inherit the land
And ^(HD)dwell in it forever.
³⁰The mouth of the righteous ^(HE)utters wisdom,
And his tongue ^(HF)speaks justice.
³¹The ^(HG)Law of his God is in his heart;
His ^(HH)steps do not slip.
³²The ^(HI)wicked spies upon the righteous
And ^(HJ)seeks to kill him.
³³The Lord will ^(HK)not leave him in his hand
Or ^(HL)let him be condemned when he is judged.
³⁴^(HM)Wait for the Lord and keep His way,
And He will exalt you to inherit the land;
When the ^(HN)wicked are eliminated, you will see it.

³⁵I have ^(HO)seen a wicked, violent person
Spreading himself like a ^(HP)luxuriant ^[ag]tree in its native soil.
³⁶Then he passed away, and behold, he ^(HQ)was no more;
I searched for him, but he could not be found.
³⁷Observe the ^[ah]^(HR)blameless person, and look at the ^(HS)upright;
For the person of peace will have ^(HT)a future.
³⁸But wrongdoers will altogether be ^(HU)destroyed;
The future of the wicked will be ^(HV)eliminated.
³⁹But the ^(HW)salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
He is their strength ^(HX)in time of trouble.
⁴⁰^(HY)The Lord helps them and rescues them;
He ^(HZ)rescues them from the wicked and saves them,
Because they ^(IA)take refuge in Him.

Prayer of a Suffering Penitent.

38 Lord, ^(IB)do not rebuke me in Your wrath,
And do not punish me in Your burning anger.
²For Your ^(IC)arrows have sunk deep into me,
And ^(ID)Your hand has pressed down on me.
³There is ^(IE)no healthy part in my flesh ^(IF)because of Your indignation;
There is no health ^(IG)in my bones because of my sin.
⁴For my ^(IH)guilty deeds have gone over my head;
Like a heavy burden they weigh too much for me.
⁵My ^[ai]wounds grow foul and fester
Because of ^(II)my foolishness.
⁶I am bent over and ^(IJ)greatly bowed down;
I ^(IK)go in mourning all day long.
⁷For my ^[aj]sides are filled with ^(IL)burning,
And there is ^(IM)no healthy part in my flesh.
⁸I feel ^(IN)faint and ^[ak]badly crushed;
I ^[al]^(IO)groan because of the ^[am]agitation of my heart.

⁹Lord, all ^(IP)my desire is ^[an]before You;
And my ^(IQ)sighing is not hidden from You.
¹⁰My heart throbs, ^(IR)my strength fails me;
And the ^(IS)light of my eyes, even ^[ao]that ^[ap]has gone from me.
¹¹My ^[aq]^(IT)loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague;
And my kinsmen ^(IU)stand far away.
¹²Those who ^(IV)seek my life ^(IW)lay snares for me;
And those who ^(IX)seek to injure me have ^[ar]threatened destruction,
And they ^(IY)plot deception all day long.

¹³But I, like a person who is deaf, do not hear;
And I am like a ^(IZ)person who cannot speak, who does not open his mouth.
¹⁴Yes, I am like a person who does not hear,
And in whose mouth are no arguments.
¹⁵For ^(JA)I wait for You, Lord;
You ^(JB)will answer, Lord my God.
¹⁶For I said, “May they not rejoice over me,
Who, when my foot slips, ^(JC)would exalt themselves over me.”
¹⁷For I am ^(JD)ready to fall,
And ^(JE)my ^[as]sorrow is continually before me.
¹⁸For I ^(JF)admit my guilt;
I am full of ^(JG)anxiety because of my sin.
¹⁹But my ^(JH)enemies are vigorous and ^[at]strong,
And those who wrongfully ^(JI)hate me are many.
²⁰And those who ^(JJ)repay evil for good,
They ^(JK)become my enemies, because I follow what is good.
²¹Do not abandon me, Lord;
My God, ^(JL)do not be far from me!
²²^(JM)Hurry to help me,
Lord, ^(JN)my salvation!

The Futility of Life.

39 I said, “I will ^(JO)keep watch over my ways
So that I ^(JP)do not sin with my tongue;
I will keep watch over ^(JQ)my mouth as with a muzzle
While the wicked are in my presence.”
²I was ^(JR)mute ^[av]and silent,
I ^[aw]refused to say even something good,
And my pain was stirred up.
³My ^(JS)heart was hot within me,
While I was musing the fire burned;
Then I spoke with my tongue:
⁴“Lord, let me know ^(JT)my end,
And what is the extent of my days;
Let me know how ^(JU)transient I am.
⁵Behold, You have made ^(JV)my days like ^[ax]hand widths,
And my ^(JW)lifetime as nothing in Your sight;
Certainly all mankind standing is ^[ay]a mere ^(JX)breath. Selah
⁶Certainly every person ^(JY)walks around as ^[az]a fleeting shadow;
They certainly make an ^(JZ)uproar for nothing;
He ^(KA)amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.

⁷“And now, Lord, for what do I wait?
My ^(KB)hope is in You.
⁸^(KC)Save me from all my wrongdoings;
Do not make me an object of ^(KD)reproach for the foolish.
⁹I have become ^(KE)mute, I do not open my mouth,
Because it is ^(KF)You who have done it.
¹⁰^(KG)Remove Your plague from me;
Because of ^(KH)the opposition of Your hand I am ^[ba]perishing.
¹¹With ^(KI)rebukes You punish a person for wrongdoing;
You ^(KJ)consume like a moth what is precious to him;
Certainly ^(KK)all mankind is mere breath! Selah

¹²“^(KL)Hear my prayer, Lord, and listen to my cry for help;
Do not be silent ^(KM)to my tears;
For I am ^(KN)a stranger with You,
^(KO)One who lives abroad, like all my fathers.
¹³^(KP)Turn Your eyes away from me, that I may become cheerful again
Before I depart and am no more.”

God Sustains His Servant.

40 I ^(KQ)waited ^[bb]patiently for the Lord;
And He reached down to me and ^(KR)heard my cry.
²He brought me up out of the ^(KS)pit of ^[bc]destruction, out of the mud;
And ^(KT)He set my feet on a rock, ^(KU)making my footsteps firm.
³He put a ^(KV)new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;
Many will ^(KW)see and fear
And will trust in the Lord.

⁴How ^(KX)blessed is the man who has made the Lord his trust,
And ^(KY)has not turned to the ^[bd]proud, nor to those who ^(KZ)become involved in falsehood.
⁵Many, Lord my God, are ^(LA)the wonders which You have done,
And Your ^(LB)thoughts toward us;
There is no one to compare with You.
If I would declare and speak of them,
They ^(LC)would be too numerous to count.

⁶^(LD)You have not desired ^[be]sacrifice and meal offering;
You have ^[bf]opened my ears;
You have not required burnt offering and sin offering.
⁷Then I said, “Behold, I have come;
It is ^[bg]written of me in the scroll of the book.
⁸^(LE)I delight to do Your will, my God;
^(LF)Your Law is within my ^[bh]heart.”

⁹I have ^(LG)proclaimed good news of righteousness in the great congregation;
Behold, I will ^(LH)not restrain my lips,
Lord, ^(LI)You know.
¹⁰I have ^(LJ)not hidden Your righteousness within my heart;
I have ^(LK)spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation;
I have not concealed Your mercy and Your truth from the great congregation.

¹¹You, Lord, will not withhold Your compassion from me;
^[bi]Your ^(LL)mercy and Your truth will continually watch over me.
¹²For evils beyond number have ^(LM)surrounded me;
My ^(LN)guilty deeds have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see;
They are ^(LO)more numerous than the hairs of my head,
And my ^(LP)heart has ^[bj]failed me.

¹³^(LQ)Be pleased, Lord, to rescue me;
^(LR)Hurry, Lord, to help me.
¹⁴May those be ^(LS)ashamed and humiliated together
Who ^(LT)seek my ^[bk]life to destroy it;
May those be turned back and dishonored
Who delight ^[bl]in my hurt.
¹⁵May those ^(LU)be ^[bm]appalled because of their shame
Who ^(LV)say to me, “Aha, aha!”
¹⁶^(LW)May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
May those who love Your salvation continually ^(LX)say,
“The Lord be exalted!”
¹⁷But ^(LY)I am afflicted and needy;
^(LZ)May the Lord be mindful of me.
You are my help and my savior;
Do not delay, my God.

The Psalmist in Sickness Complains of Enemies and False Friends.

41 Blessed is one who ^(MA)considers the ^[bn]helpless;
The Lord will save him ^(MB)on a day of ^[bo]trouble.
²The Lord will ^(MC)protect him and keep him alive,
And he will be called ^[bp]^(MD)blessed upon the earth;
And ^(ME)do not turn him over to the desire of his enemies.
³The Lord will sustain him upon his sickbed;
In his illness, You ^[bq]restore him to health.

⁴As for me, I said, “Lord, be gracious to me;
^(MF)Heal my soul, for ^(MG)I have sinned against You.”
⁵My enemies ^(MH)speak evil against me,
“When will he die, and his name perish?”
⁶And ^[br]when he comes to see me, he ^(MI)speaks ^[bs]empty words;
His heart gathers wickedness to itself;
When he goes outside, he tells it.
⁷All who hate me whisper together against me;
They ^(MJ)plot my harm against me, saying,
⁸“A wicked thing is poured out ^[bt]upon him,
So that when he lies down, he will ^(MK)not get up again.”
⁹Even my ^[bu]^(ML)close friend in whom I trusted,
Who ate my bread,
Has lifted up his heel against me.

¹⁰But You, Lord, be gracious to me and ^(MM)raise me up,
That I may repay them.
¹¹By this I know that ^(MN)You are pleased with me,
Because ^(MO)my enemy does not shout in triumph over me.
¹²As for me, ^(MP)You uphold me in my integrity,
And You place me ^(MQ)in Your presence forever.

¹³^(MR)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
From everlasting to everlasting.

Thirsting for God in Trouble and Exile.

42 As the deer ^[bw]pants for the water brooks,
So my soul ^[bx]^(MS)pants for You, God.
²My soul ^(MT)thirsts for God, for the ^(MU)living God;
When shall I come and ^[by]^(MV)appear before God?
³My ^(MW)tears have been my food day and night,
While they ^(MX)say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
⁴I remember these things and ^(MY)pour out my soul within me.
For I ^(MZ)used to go over with the multitude and walk them to the house of God,
With a voice of ^(NA)joy and thanksgiving, a multitude celebrating a festival.

⁵^(NB)Why are you ^[bz]^(NC)in despair, my soul?
And why are you ^(ND)restless within me?
^(NE)Wait for God, for I will ^[ca]again praise ^[cb]Him
For the ^[cc]^(NF)help of His ^[cd]presence, my God.
⁶My soul is ^[ce]in despair within me;
Therefore I ^(NG)remember You from ^(NH)the land of the Jordan
And the ^[cf]peaks of ^(NI)Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
